Chapter 3
As the tent's flap closes behind the small group that just entered, the first one I see is the
tall redhead at the front, who I recognize from my Saratoga memories as none other than Arizona herself. Behind her are a couple girls I barely recognize as an Atlanta and Brooklyn class.
However, my attention is immediately drawn to the one making up the rear of the group, whose gaze stops on me like mine on her. I wouldn't need my Sara memories to recognize the face similar to my own staring back at me. By the way she's standing there frozen while the others have already moved from the entrance, I can tell she recognizes me as well. After all, before me is my own big sister,
Lexington.
Who knew she would be right there? She looks like her Warship Girls portrayal, too. "Hello," I shyly wave at the group. "How are you, big sis?" However, my eyes convey that of worry, of how Lex would react to me being like, well, all pale and glowy and jellyfishy.
The whole group pauses as they notice Lexington staring at me, who's standing there, speechless. Then I hear a soft whisper. "Sara?", and before I know it, the aircraft carrier
flies at me in a tackle-hug, tears in her eyes. Much to the confusion of everyone else besides the destroyers, who sport a pouting, kinda jealous expression instead.
Lex nearly bowls me over, but she feels so nice and warm as in return, I tightly wrap my arms around her, smiling. My Sara memories are very much real, very much genuine and sincere, and… it's so good to see her again, after so long. Part of me thought she was gone forever, to the hereafter. A few tears could be seen from my eye. "It's me, Sis. You're here…"
I can tell she's crying softly as she holds on to me for dear life. "I thought you'd never come, or even worse that I'd have to fight you later. What happened?" At this, everyone else suddenly looks more interested, likely having guessed or learned my identity by now.
It's shivering to recall it once more. "When I woke up, I was in a deep, dark abyss," I narrate. "There was a voice, offering me to join her. She spoke of shared pain, of shared betrayals. She is the Bikini Atoll Princess, but she was once known as New York… I said no to her. She didn't take it well." My body shudders at the lengths the Princess took to try and get me.
Lexington only hugs me tighter. "There, there, she can't get to you now. Everything will be alright." Gently, she kneels down with me. Offering a shoulder if I need one.
Meanwhile, I notice that Arizona seems to be slightly angered. "New York? She's The Bikini Atoll Princess? Don't you worry Sara, We'll make sure she gets what she deserves for that. And for anyone else she might have done too in the past." The DDs both jump up with excitement, probably already planning to go out right now. If not for the two light cruisers already corralling them.
"Thank you…" I softly reply, still holding onto my sister for comfort as I find myself sniffling a bit. "Please, release her from her pain…"
"Don't worry Sara, we'll make sure she can rest peacefully. Along with everyone else." Lexington whispers to me softly. Meanwhile everyone else quietly shuffles out of the tent to wait.
A short while later, I see a dark-haired man enter the tent. Dressed in an olive camouflage Navy uniform, I identify him as Commander McRaven, partly from his name patch, and partly from what I recognize is a silver oak leaf, a commander's rank insignia.
Stepping forward, he nods politely to Lexington, who hugs me one last time before letting go and stepping back. The commander holds out his hand before introducing himself. "Good morning, Miss Saratoga, My name is Commander Davis McRaven. I'm in charge of the American Shipgirls based out of the Western Pacific. As you can probably tell, I've already been briefed on your situation." He pauses to glance at your more Abyssal features. "But rest assured that to me and anyone below me, there won't be any issues. If so, I want you to come to me. But for now, If you have any questions that need answered, I have a few minutes before we must continue."
I take a moment to compose myself before I take the offered hand in a handshake, nodding. Nice to hear that he's reasonable, which is reassuring. "May I know the situation here so far, sir?" I ask, though it's understandable if parts of it are classified.
"Of course. Simply put, our mission is the capture of the Abyssal Transports for intelligence on how their supply system works." He turns slightly to glance at the DDs, who shrink slightly at his gaze. "But I was informed you were already aware of that. But the full story goes like this, ever since the beginning of the war, we've known very little about how Abyssals operate. Only recently have we really had any idea as to what they were." He looks pointedly at me. "But from a military standpoint, this only serves to hurt us. Too many mistakes made based on guesses proven wrong, resulting in far too many lives lost."
The commander brings out a map of the island, with markers for the Abyssal Base nearby. "One such area is how their supply system works. Initially, we thought they didn't need any. But then, we learned the true purpose behind this Abyssal class." He shows me a picture of an Abyssal transport. "Many have been curious about obtaining one Intact so we can learn just how the Abyssals function. So that's why we find ourselves here today."
"Unfortunately, I don't have intel on Abyssal ops, since I got out asap," I reply, for I don't know if they operate as regular navies do, or if they have new tricks. "How would the transports be captured?" My thought is to take out the base and escorts, then disable their engines and board them, but the commander could have something better in mind.
"The plan is to have the Fletcher sneak up in the night, loaded with fairy marines. The rest of the fleet will stand guard in case they manage to get an SOS signal out. At the moment, there is a small Abyssal patrol fleet nearby. While that's less than ideal our window is short." The commander pauses for a second. "However if you would like to help, your assistance would be great, it's possible not all members of the Abyss are aware of your 'defection' for lack of better words. You could waltz right up and they may not open fire. But I'll leave where you'd be most willing to help up to you."
At this Lexington looks eagerly in my direction. I can tell she seems interested in fighting alongside me again. Same with me, actually. It'd be like old times.
The plan sounds good to me. "On the other hand, there's a chance the Princess sent out a capture or kill order on me," I remark, "I'd like to help with my aircraft, but they're not rated for night ops."
"The thing about that is, the Abyss may be the dominant military force on Earth right now, but they really aren't that united. While the Princesses don't outright go to war with each other, they certainly aren't cooperative. This Abyssal force is from another Princess in the area, so news might not have spread."
"Noted, sir," I reply. A moment's thought brings me an idea to exploit their disunity. "If they don't know yet, could we use a ruse where I pretend to have captured the Fletcher?"
The commander thinks for a second before responding. "While I'm hesitant to send them in like that, I'll leave it ultimately up to you and them. Just make sure you keep them safe." The Commander gives me a hard look, and I see in his eyes how much he seems to care about them.
"I will, sir. Thank you," I nod, grateful for his trust, and determined to do right by it.
"Good then, if you have any other questions?" the Commander asks.
"Not really, sir," I answer.
"Alright then, I have things to do so I'll have to leave. But if you need anything don't be afraid to find me and ask." The Commander then leaves the tent. But as he does I see Lexington walk up and speak to me.
"We still have a few hours before we begin the operation, so if you'd like we could spend some time together. It'd be just like old times!" She says excitedly, as Arizona grins at us from the side with the Fletcher sisters.
"Sure thing." One could see the smile on my face. "What would you like to do?"
Lexington grins back at me as she responds. "Well, I recently just got into these things called video games. And this Island still has an internet connection. So I thought we could play some!"
"Yay!" is my response. I definitely like that. "What video games do you have?"
As it turns out, she has several games, their consoles included, that count among my favorites, Gran Turismo Sport and Ace Combat 7 among them. Even Neptunia, too. It feels like home, but this time being able to play with newfound friends and family, and it brings a comforting warmth to my coolness. I don't think I'd get to do this if I joined the Princess that time.
Lex also has the console version of World of Warships, with so many ships already unlocked, including premium ones. There's something amusing about ship spirits playing games about their hull selves, myself included. It's fun forming the Warships version of a platoon and trying our best in the matches, win or lose. No high-tier ships for me though, since I lack experience and skill for that level of play. Instead, we go for mid-tier ones at most. I did play carriers for the majority of the time, though. Can't help it, for I'm a carrier person by nature, even before becoming Sara.
So for the next few hours Lexington and I remain engrossed in our games, occasionally joined by one of the other ship girls or base personnel. Gradually, I start to notice everyone grow more relaxed around me, as I enjoy the peaceful moment between my sister and I.
