What can I do with magnetars?

After watching the What.If video on "What if a Magnetar appeared in our solar system", I've become very interested in writing a story focused on a scientist studying them. But I also want to put a fictional spin on it. I want to have a variation on a magnetar that is slightly different than what we know about them now.

1.) What could this "new slight variation on Magnetars" thing be called?


2.) What applications can be done with magnetars for an advanced society?
