What are you watching? Anime Edition

As someone who never watched the original Ranma 1/2, and only read the manga for the first time in the last few years, I can say that even without the nostalgia boost the update is pretty darn good.

Sengoku Youko continues to be the most criminally underwatched thing currently going, I think. It's even animated by White Fox, so the production value is certainly there. Bah.

Anyway, I'm also really surprised I haven't seen more about Dan da Dan around these parts. It's pretty much usurped Re;Zero's number 1 spot in the weekly episode discussions on the anime subreddit. For those not in the know, it's a high school shonen battle show about a boy who doesn't believe in ghosts, and a girl who doesn't believe in aliens, who each run in to the other thing on a dare and they end up battling ghost curses and alien abductions together.

Except psych it's also a romcom with some of the best chemistry between the leads this side of Spice & Wolf. It is both things.

Episode 5 went up this week, and the degree to which the trendy female lead's classmates are absolutely sold on her going after the male lead nerd boy that she is currently in denial about is a great bit, and super endearing. I'm anime-only, and this is not even the half of it so far, and word on the street is it gets crazier from here.
Dandadan freakin' rocks. I'm watching the anime and reading the manga alongside it so I can binge it when the anime finishes.

I'm also watching 12 other shows coming out this season. There's like 4 magical girl ones and I also really like Natsume's Book of Friends and How I Attended an All-Guys Mixer.

Only saw the first two episodes of Dan da Dan for the moment, but the chemistry between the two leads is amazing: the stories first baits us into thinking that it's the usual cool girl & nerd boy dynamic, then it turns out that both are absolute gremlins when it comes to their fixation (ghosts and aliens respectively) and both have their moments where they get one over the other. (instead of the usual of having the boy be a complete doormat)

Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi or eng. The Elusive Samurai.

This is a fun show. I am only 3 episodes in so please don't tell me if the quality drops after that.

One thing I absolutely did not expect is for Elusive Samurai to turn into Mount and Blade lite. I liked it a lot! 7/10.

It's been a while, but I'm still on hiatus on my anime list. Trying to finish up most on my school work and getting outside again.

It's also on the basis on that I really don't have time to watch anything anymore, at least in the sense of being comfortable enough to watch anything.

The only show that catched my eye, so far, is tomb raider, and that is because some people bitched about it on Twitter, because laura croft is muscular.

Yeah, we've had a successful of what I call 'Anime I can show to people who don't watch anime' - Frieren, Apothecary, Delicious, and now Dan Da Dan. Pretty successful few seasons in that regard.

Nah I disagree with Dan Da Dan being for folks who don't watch anime it's a the first episode, if you ain't used to some tropes

Eh, the tropes are there, but they're definitely overshadowed by the weirdness and character chemistry. It's no FOR them, but I'd put it on the list of 'accessible'.

Dandadan looked cute when I saw the trailer, then I looked it up, and I see it is romantic. Yeah, I have seen plenty of those already, so I am not watching anymore, lol.

I saw some clips too, and one involved with the main girl almost getting raped, because that is perfectly fine to make, right? Sigh*

In Dan Dan Dan's defense, the first episode is the weakest and I won't lie I was turned off by it too.

But then I went to go on to read the manga and it has skyrocketed to favorite manga category. I would legitimately put DDD on the same level as Berserk, Vinland, Jojo, and Dungeon Meshi. It can give Jojo a run for its money on how absurd it gets.

The romance is legitimately strong. Momo and Okarun have more chemistry than 'official' married couple Loid and Yor. It is 100% kino.

Castle in the Sky! A Seattle theater is doing a Studio Ghibli and I popped in to see one of my favorite movies. Very impressive on the big screen, though I would have preferred not to be right underneath a speaker that needed to carry sound to the entire room. I continue to like the dub for most of Miyazaki's movies and the music and visuals are, of course, world class.

The amount of horniness in Dan Da Dan (even after episode 1) is something that makes it not something you can blindly recommend to anyone.

It kinda helps that the aliens 1 - Are treating this like a vivisection, which it is*, the crotch mounted tech aside, and 2 - They get their shit pushed in within 30 seconds of the attempted vivisection when they accidentally awaken Momo's psychic powers.

Long sniff*

Ooh wee, that is one nasty bullshit justfication. /s

But to be more serious, they could have done that scene in a better way, because they knew they can, but they choose not to, so......

The scene was around aliens abducting the female lead because they need ladies to reproduce. Sure, a bit ick, but it isn't exactly uncommon with Roswell-style aliens to dive into sexual stuff - anal probing is a common joke around Area 51 aliens, right?

The scene of potential SA actually does tie into the plot since spoilers for episode 3-4: Turbo Granny travels through Momo's phone to try and save her because she's got a history of helping girls that suffer similar fates. That's like her thing, aside from being an asshole 90% of the time.

Either way, it's a fantastic show and you absolutely cannot predict what'll happen next.

Yeah, but like....I don't watch shit like that to know about that to begin with.
