We Are All Volunteers: A Military-Themed Multi-Fandom Crossover RP

Immediately afterwards, Pvt. Anna Vosyem, the cursed changeling who wished to die as a mortal human, finally got her wish (albeit, it probably wasn't quite as she had in mind). A bullet, like those that've killed countless mortals in the past, blasted her pretty little porcelein skin to pieces, tears her orichalcum wires apart. Pvt. Anna Vosyem has been KIA.

And if Bahzell, Akira and co. were paying close-enough attention, they would realise that there was now a massive web of tripwires, spanning between tree trunks near the ground in front of them.
Tukson was the first to notice the tripwires. "Hey, Akira? I think this is a tra-" The faunus was rudely interrupted by an echoing report of a heavy rifle, and the head of the sixth member of Fireteam Normie's head exploding. "There's a bunch of tripewires up ahead.

"Oh, eat a bag of dicks jungle" Acidbath mumbled as he did his best not to move around to much.

Nudging the mutilated corpses of the unfortunate members, Igor looked at Tukson and took a last drag of the cigarette, throwing the butt to the side.
"Way to state the obvious there, comrade. The way I see it, we can either find a way around it- which is boring, or we can try to set them all up at once with some explosives. Or we could use Mr. Pudding over there "-He said pointing at Acidbath- "to maybe melt the tripwires. It may or may not set them off anyway but at least it would be funny to watch."
He coughed once, finding some snack bar in a pocket and biting into it.

Chloe heard the reports of the rifle shots that killed two of the fireteam's "normal" members, and swung her Widowmaker over. The gunshot sensors in her helmet fed her information, and she panned her TweetyBird to get a better look.

[Two shots fired - Bearing 015 from current facing - 5 degrees depression - Range 700 meters - Caliber unknown, intermediate caliber suspected]

Don't know if this'll be hittin' anythin', but...

Chloe steadied herself, and sent four rounds into the area the gunshots came from, the hypersonic projectiles stitching lines of fire through the foliage and slamming into where she thought the shooter was. Immediately, she relocated, armor shifting to match her background as she bounced fifty meters from where she'd shot from.

Yuri noticed two of the weaklings drop.

Not that suprizing realy.

"Lets get this on schedual shall we?"

Yuri jumps on Starve Venom latching on to it like a surf board or a mount, where the dragon then charges forward towards the gunshots.

Akira felt a cold sweat running down her back as she and the impromptu Fireteam crept quietly through the jungle. Shadows danced at the edges of her vision and every rustle seemed to carry a sense of mounting dread with it. Getting shot at seemed more and more preferable to this jumpy state of affairs: at least the first one meant that she knew where the danger was coming from.

She nearly jumped out of her skin as her headset crackled to life with Waltrud's voice, telling them to pull back and go around instead of through the jungle that they were in. The air cover probably wouldn't have done much but the sentiment was appreciated by the violette. At least their CO was looking out for them.

Tukson was the first to notice the tripwires. "Hey, Akira? I think this is a tra-"

Ice cubes fell down Akira's spine as two of their number suddenly had their faces violently re-arranged before dropping onto the forest floor like marionettes cut from their string. The Magical Girl didn't even spare the now-corpses a glance before hitting the dirt, not daring to peek her head up high in fear of meeting the same fate.

Hazel eyes frantically scoured the treeline in front of them for a muzzle flash, a report, anything to tell her where the bloody Hell the gunshots were coming from as all Hell broke loose.

Soldiers, this is supposed to be a distraction mission, but I was hoping you'd start becoming loud when you got closer to the enemy. And while you're near an easily-defensible area that the enemy cares about keeping intact. Like infrastructure. Right now, you're as good as sitting ducks.

A few seconds of silence.

Alright, here's what you'll do. They likely won't suspect an enemy attack right away. Instead, they'll send units in to check out the disturbance. All of you, get out of the way, quickly. Original plan was to move straight through the jungle, but doing it now will probably get you surrounded. So, new plan. Hug the edges of the jungle as close you can. It'll take longer, but it'll also leave you with less change of being flanked. I've radioed in the trailing units as well, they'll follow your lead.

I've radioed in for backup. They'll send in a flight or two of aircraft to cover the air above you, but they can't guarantee anything more. You all better move like hell. Over.
Iowa relayed the message to Northstar.

Akira quietly wondered why people started flocking to her all of a sudden. Maybe it was the violet hair? Such a color would stand out among the brown and green of the jungle, after all.

The Magical Girl would've protested Bahzell leaving the lad off with her but the Hradani's sudden departure brooked little argument. So it was with a sigh that she turned towards Igor and Steven, all the while trying not to think about what would happen if the worst happened and one of them got shot; Steven especially.

She really, really didn't want to bear the weight of someone dying on her watch.

"Right, same thing as I told Tukson and Acid here: keep your heads on a swivel and let us know if you see something suspicious. And you, Steven, right? You stay in the back and watch our rear especially. Don't want anyone untoward sneaking up on us. We all clear?" The violette says, looking at her now five-man Fireteam.

"Got it," Steven replied evenly with a nod, keeping his head on a swivel as he brought up the rear of the fireteam.

Pvt. Nathan Drake, the (former) Indiana Jones-wannabe, who was following behind Bahzell and Akira's group, got a faceful of large-calibur lead. His head disappeared in a splash of gore, and his body fell forwards. Pvt. Nathan Drake has been KIA.

Steven cried out in shock, his eyes widening in horror as he watched two of their squadmates drop dead where they stood, one of them with his entire head now gone.

He quickly threw himself to the ground and scrambled up next to his remaining squad mates. Fearing that the same thing could happen to any of them at any moment, Steven quickly projected a glowing pink bubble shield out to encompass everyone within three meters of himself, stretching sections of the bubble to cover anyone outside that radius. He desperately hoped that the enemy didn't have any weapons that could break his barrier.

"Akira, what do we do?? Do we try to clear the mines, or go around??" Steven asked frantically, too focused on protecting everyone to clearly think of a strategy right now.

Poking his finger at the barrier, Igor thought for a moment. It looked quite solid, and since the kid enveloped everyone it must've been at least bulletproof.

Yuri looked around and saw the others not moving in the same direction.

He reasoned that it would be a waste to have a kill with no proof behind it.

So he proceeded to move towards the other.

@Inter-VersaLoli

Chara felt the Mzma before they saw them: first, an uneasy feeling in their stomach, one that they first dismissed as excitement. But soon enough it grew into a buzzing that enveloped their entire body, like a thousand icy-cold insects crawling beneath their skin.

Chara snapped their fingers: the spark of flame that followed was subdued, snuffed out in rapid order.

It didn't take a genius to figure what he Mzma were doing.

The ghost bit their lip in frustration. The cowards were denying them the satisfaction of seeing the light go out in their eyes as they killed them.

Releasing their held-up breath, the ghost glared towards the firing line.

They would all die.

Any consideration for sublety or restraint for their allies gone, Chara considered the arsenal available to them. Hand to hand was obviously out of question, unless they could draw them into the jungle.

Which wasn't a bad plan, but it required a stray Mzma and a whole lot of knives, and while the latter was in no short supply they did not have the time to find the first.

Ninety-nine percent of their ranged arsenal was made ineffective by the null field. However...

They had an idea.

Ghosting back into the jungle, Chara located a moderately sized boulder, perhaps twice again their own height in diameter. In an instant it's gravity was tilted ninety degrees, rolling along the thick undergrowth slowly at first, but picking up speed.

By the time it emerged from the jungle's edge and hit the wall of tripwires it was barreling onwards like a freight train, it's path aimed through the group of soldiers and into the side of the jeep.

The Violette tried to tune everyone out so that she could think. They couldn't advance, for that would mean they would run afoul of the tripwires and any snipers, nor could they stay put for that would risk being picked off one by one.

That left retreating, but even then they could get shot the moment they left Steven's barrier. If they just had some kind of cover...

"What the big Lady said: we're retreating!" Akira finally answered the four as she stood up, waving for the others to peel back towards the Treeline before doing so herself once the rest had gone first.

"Thanks!" She hollers at Northstar as she departs with a sinking feeling. Their very first engagement and already two people died: it was a bad omen.

Just as the transmission from Barkhorn cut out, Bahzell froze. Tripwires. It seemed the Mzma hadn't been as complacent as he might have liked. Kneeling down to carefully examine the tripwire, he noticed an awful lot of them, directly ahead. Satisfied that there were none to the right, he began moving right, just as two shots thundered from the jungle ahead, instantly killing two that he hadn't yet gotten to know. Bahzell's hand flew to one of the grenades on his harness, but before he could even think about throwing the grenade at the offending parties, Chloe's gun thundered four times behind him. Moments later, Northstar dropped down between the squad and the gunmen, and Bahzell began moving to the right, seeking out further traps, the muzzle of the M2 sweeping back and forth as he scanned the jungle for any of the many signs many, many years of training with war maids had taught him.

It wouldn't do to get ambushed by a second group of enemies simply because they'd all focused on the first group. Not at all.

Igor looked around at his withdrawing squadmates and quickly ran towards the fallen. He quickly patted them over, taking any spare magazines they had, and a single grenade one of them had in a pocket. All of that took him less than half a minute, and in that time he was already running to the relative safety of the big ass robot.

Boom headshot Double Kill
Ralph ducks into the undergrowth to one side.

That he couldn't feel glass meant one of several things, none of them good. The thickness of the jungle made snipers unlikely. The use of high-index plastics for everything was, as far as he knew, impractical at best. And if the Mzma could somehow block the Wyrd, that would...

The corners of Ralph's mouth quirk up in a predatory grin. Stealing power and turning it against the original holders was part of the way his Court did things, was it not?

"What the big Lady said: we're retreating!" Akira finally answered the four as she stood up, waving for the others to peel back towards the Treeline before doing so herself once the rest had gone first.

Steven did his best to make sure the others were still covered by his barrier as he began retreating with the rest of the fireteam. He couldn't help but spare a glance at their fallen squadmates...and instantly wished he hadn't, a pang of horrified nausea running through him. For now, he tried his best to focus on the mission, and on keeping the rest of his team alive.

Synn watched the trainwreck in progress as Yuri proceeded to summon two insanely obvious Summons for who knows what reason. Seriously, she scratched the back of her head in embarassment, pondering if the name of the planet on which they happen to have a mission on might be 'Crazyland'. Or maybe Iowa happened to be carrying an active Orb of Confusion, which also affected Yuri?

Regardless, she looked to the two and then decided that since things were to be this way...

She caught up and decided that since Yuri and Iowa were intent on being noticeable, she'd stand where they aren't. Watching Rachel go up the trees, she decided that this would be a nice idea. Thanks to her powerful legs, it was easy to bring her frame up a tree up the hill and then take position. Apparently, she was used to jumping with precision as she moved forward, catching up with the KND operative and the ghost. As she finished catching up, she smiled at the two.

"Do you mind if I tag along?" Then, she decided to go with her idea on the whole thing. She kept her voice relatively quiet ; no need to be loud if she's sufficiently nearby. "I say we adjust mission parameters. Yuri and Iowa can be distractions, which means they can go ahead and get themselves killed all by themselves. We follow from a safe distance toward the objective. Either their bluster is justified and they'll act as distractions even better than the higher-ups had hoped or Nature will take its course and their actions will make their respective species' gene pools a safer place."

She wondered... would they appreciate her coming? Or would she get in the way? If she got in the way, she can easily slow down and hang near the other members of the group instead.

362 gave some thought to that.

On one hand, she's a cat.

On the other, she's a six-foot-tall-pink cat.

On the third, mutant hand spouting from the chest, I wanna see how she does things.

The Operative, her face obscured by camouflage-pattered makeup and her eyes covered up by the night-vision goggles, gave Synn a nod.

"Sure thing, sir," she told her, and took a second to think about how wierd it was for her to be saying that to an adult and mean it. Maybe it was because Synn was a big kitty who purred if you scratched her between the ears and not a human adult.

Chara directed Synn a heavy-lidded look.

"How brutal of you."

The ghost turned back towards the jungle, watching their friend move ahead.

"However. Should you wish to implement such a plan. I feel obligated to suggest. That you take it up with Bahzell."

They inclined their head towards the beach, where the Hradani's bulky form was directing the Legion towards the treeline.

"Given that we are not in position to affect such a change in tactics."

Chara began drifting in the same general direction as Rachel, passing through the canopy like it was made of air, without disturbing so much as a single leaf.

"Unless. It is your desire to use the entire rest of the Legion as bait."

The ghost paused mid-air for an instant, casting a glance back at Synn before continuing further inland.

"Who are currently expecting us to scout for them. In which case I repeat. How brutal of you."

"To be fair," 362 noted, "Yuri's a loud, obnoxious bag of hot wind and garbage gas who can summon creepy huge monsters, and Iowa's a huge showoff who thinks with her guns that's also supposed to be able to take a hit. If anyone can actually stand a chance of surviving being The Distraction, it's those two."

They continued their quick, stealthy advance through the canopy. 362 was sure to drop a few things along the path that the Legion was sure to take. Traps were only fun when you were the one who put them there.

THE CANOPY

JUNGLE CANOPY

As the PCs on the branches scouted further and further ahead, he would go over the web of tripwires in which Bahzell, Akira and co. were currently pre-occupied with.

Going further, he found in a rare clearing, passing over a river that passed through the centre of the reserve.

Beyond even this, after a few more hectares, Chara would come across a wall of thin, nearly invisible tripwires, stretching from the ground, all the way to the canopy.

And beyond even that, there was a row of enemy troops, staying just out of the jungle, and pointing their guns towards it. There was also a jeep with a mounted machine gun on top, just behind them.

There was something very, very wrong about how 362 moved.

Every movement she made seemed to be designed to be as economical, quiet and efficient as possible. There was a purposefulness; a certain smooth, mechanical quality to her movements that would've seemed out of place on most adults. When she was out of combat, one could almost fool themselves into thinking that, with a change of clothes and scenery, she could be normal.

Not so much now. As she sneaked through enemy territory, armed to the teath and wreathed in camouflage and darkness, there was none of the subtle anxiety and tension that she'd had in the base. She looked almost relaxed. Like she belonged here.

When she saw Chara tense as the ghost felt something, the Operative tensed as well, like a coiled spring or viper, slowing down her movements and creeping towards the parts of the canopy that gave her the most cover. She looked at where the ghost kid was looking through the scope of her rifle, and that's how she found the enemy.

She made a few hand signals towards Synn and Chara, and busied herself examining the soldiers, counting guns and bodies.

Enemy spotted. Scouting. Remain alert.

She was so "in the zone" that she didn't bother to think that Chara or Synn would be familiar with KND hand signals.

To the radio's Bahzell and 362, she delivered a similar message.
-<We have friendlies down. The big guns are on Station and survivors are pulling back as ordered. Where are you?>-

The Operative whispered into the mic of the headset built into her helmet.

"This is 362, we have eyes on hostiles. Unknown if they are bait. Scanning for silenced weapons."

Which was when Chara decided to play bowling with the enemy and a large bowler. Which, not-coinicidentally, was the same time that 362 realized that she might not have been clear as to what she'd told them to do... and that Synn was actually the one in charge.

Whoops.

... Well, at least that didn't give our positon away... I hope.

"... Well, Chara's rolled a boulder over them so I guess we'll find out if they're the bait or not."

Synn would reveal that she was definitely used to this kind of maneuvering as she followed 362 and Chara. Despite her large size and curves, her true strength was not in brute strength but in agility ; her spine was far more flexible than a human's and her impressive leg strength allowed her to propel herself from sturdy branch to sturdy branch with ease. And she was not stopped by a lack of sturdy branches either, her long prehensible tail wrapping around one of them as she seemingly missed the jump... only to effectively catch to the branch with her tail, spin briefly, and then propel ahead, the maneuver preventing the branch from breaking under her weight.

As she landed nearby enough for 362 and Chara to know where she was but not close enough that any enemies would notice them next to one another, Synn observed the way ahead. She did not flinch as Chara launched that boulder though she did hear the radio call unlike the underage agent.

Thankfully, while at the base, 362 had shown some of her hand signals so she understood what she meant... and most importantly, it allowed her to communicate back. Namely, she signaled for her to pay attention and then pointed to her radio.

Right after that, she clenched her fists, preparing in case they need to either go back or to continue on...

362 signed back.

Acknowledged. 2 friendlies down.

If the Operative was surpised or moved by the deaths, she didn't show.

Destroy, distract, or designate targets?
