Is it clear to us whether it matters when we pull the lever? Socializing with Edgar has demonstrated we can get some amount of boost after doing so, at least.
It has been proven by comparing Aaron and Edgar different levels of power that emotional investment upon pulling the trigger will result in a stronger power, also the ability to spend meta resources on that power to make it stronger.

I believe that Gabbie also stated this to be the case, but I don't have any screenshots of when that happened.

A power will have a higher growth ceiling if the lever is pulled deeper into an emotional connection. Starting at 50 will get you up to 120, but starting at 10 will get you to 35 with the same effort.

Good to know!

With that in mind we may want to move "additional Aaron bonding" up on our list of priorities. Started pretty high on that one, after all.

Crows circled overhead, cowing out in discord as the wind kept them aloft. Dark clouds formed over the horizon, a bad storm brewing in the distance. The only sound louder than the wind was the constant screaming and groaning of the prisoners in the camp.

Lim fell prone, his sledgehammer falling out of his hands and next to him. In the distance, a guard started moving for him.

His body twitched painfully, his stomach rumbling and seizing, almost as if it was attempting to eat itself for sustenance. Every movement caused more pain to appear somewhere on his body; an old wound opening up, a scar itching beyond scratching's comfort, a bruise aching so intensely it caused tears.

So hungry...

He hadn't eaten in days. His last meal was a dead rat that he found next to his cell door, which left him with intense diarrhea and vomiting for two days. The only reason he survived was because one of the guards forcibly administered medicine to get him better - can't have one dying before fulfilling their duty to the state.

Now, Lim was in the midst of a cold field, shackles around his ankles and chains tying them together. The clinking of the other prisoners' chains a steady, rhythmic reminder of his situation. A sledgehammer laid by his side, waiting to be picked up, as he attempted to pick himself up from the ground. There was no energy left in his body, he was just… so hungry.

His eyes wandered the empty fields. Aside from the other prisoners, there was nothing edible. Nothing to eat, nothing to pick him up from the ground.

"You, get up!" a soldier yelled, coming up close with a baton. He struck Lim in the back, a sharp snap hitting him square at the base of the spine, drawing out a coarse yell out of him. "Get up and work!"

Mhmm, that is an option that I also considered I'll admit. When I thought about it more however I realised that Michael is just, very very useless outside of places where Cypher couldn't track us, which I assume to be most first world countries since they've proven to be a much better hacker than us.

We'd also have to convince our cult friends to come with us, Aaron and Edgar would be more easy but everyone else? Not to mention that we would need to rely more on our powers if we were in a place where technology surveillance wasn't the ruling paradigm.

Kynegetis 3.1
The team was gathered around the table, inspecting the yellow folder that had been dropped off at their doorstep mere hours prior. After everyone had been called to the living room, they all sat down and opened it, letting its contents fall onto the table.

Inside were several documents, badges, and other types of fake papers - forensics IDs, private investigator cards, literal fake IDs with believable names, and an older-looking police badge specifically for Aaron. With the documents were several pictures of a crime scene, showing a horrifically burnt corpse with intact clothing, laid on the ground.

After the large amounts of papers and pictures, a small flip-phone slid out of the folder, followed by a small MP3 player with the words 'play me' written on some tape on its back. Michael pressed the play button, and everyone went completely quiet to listen.

"These are fake documents and papers to allow you to work publicly without utilizing your real names," a robotic voice said, similar to Cypher's own voice changer but without the human cadence. "Your faces are scrubbed from all governmental facial recognition databases, so you have freedom to operate, but have care not to use your real names in any scenario where that name would be reported or documented. That is something we can't wipe. When necessary, call the only saved number on the phone, and make your requests. They will be carried out within reason by your attachee."

"We have an attachee?" Edgar asked.

Hilary shushed him harshly, a hand splayed all over Edgar's face. "Shut up!"

"Here is some preliminary information. The killer, who we are dubbing 'Igni' for the time being, has killed around seventeen people over the span of three months, with the last ten being killed within the last month. The last one died five days ago, two days before our meeting, and the crime scene is still being investigated by the relevant authorities, though the investigation is slow on purpose.

"All of the victims share roughly the same character identikit: people between fourteen and thirty-two years old, people who have dealt with some type of difficult circumstance like addiction, economic troubles, social isolation, medical issues, a recently deceased loved one, and other similar situations. On top of that, all of these people were involved in at least one incident in the three weeks before their murder.

"The most recent victim's name is Jessica Clavi. College girl, music major, wealthy family. Her best friend committed suicide three years ago, leading to a deep depression and several suicide attempts that resulted in a heavily medicated stay in Kaloss Psychiatric Hospital. During her stay in KPH, several incidents culminated in the injury of several patients as well as her, followed by her release on the 21st of August.

"Three weeks later, on the 13th of September, Jessica Clavi was found dead in her own home. Modus operandi is identical to the other sixteen victims, the victim is completely burnt aside from their clothes, but none of the surroundings show signs of combustion. I'll leave any further investigation to you and your team. Destroy this recording with your power.

"Cypher, signing off."

Michael leaned back in his seat as the MP3 player in his hands came undone by the power of his ultradimensional vegetable slicer, considering the information that had just been presented to him.

The victims were joined by recent traumatic experiences or somewhat major incidents that apparently went unreported. That fit the posthuman 'triggering criteria,' as far as Michael knew. Pair that with the fact that they'd been neck-deep in a conspiracy which quite explicitly hunted down superpowered individuals to capture or kill them, and the Doylist answer was clear: Igni was targeting alleged posthumans to get them off the board.

But what was the Watsonian reason? Either it matched the conspiracy's own motive, or Igni was being manipulated in turn by the shadow organization to go after specific targets. Either one of those two options, or the third, way more unreasonable and improbable option - Igni was a brainwashed supersoldier that the government had given powers to after experimenting on the captured posthumans to find out how to give powers at will.

Michael breathed out. Instead of drawing conclusions immediately, he opened his eyes and looked at his friends around him. "What do you think?"

"I'm thinking that this is terrifying," Hilary said, a little green around the gills. "I'm honestly not sure how you guys can take this so calmly…"

Edgar looked at Hilary for a few seconds. "Me and Mike killed two guys in self defense, Aaron was in 'Nam, Nila lived on the street and saw these things happen. We're used to it."

Michael winced, remembering the feeling of his power going through that man's neck.

"Right." Hilary leaned back in her seat, hands in the pockets of her hoodie. "I hope we never outright fight this guy."

"Unfortunately, we'll most likely end up having to," Nila reasoned, turning her attention towards Hilary. "Even if we gathered immense amounts of evidence, Cypher already said that law enforcement isn't doing anything as is; we'll have to make it a public scandal that outs posthumans on a large scale or, very simply put, kill the guy. Any other option isn't worth it for a variety of reasons."

"Nila is unfortunately right," Michael muttered lamely, steepling his hands on the table. "The idea of killing someone doesn't thrill me, but it's a serial killer who is most likely using superpowers to carry out his designs. That can't be allowed to go on."

"Right, we're going to be vigilantes," Hilary declared, her tone a mix of defeat and exasperation. "I can't believe this."

"Superheroes, Hilary," Edgar corrected with a smile, extending a comforting shoulder pat. "And we can choose not to kill the guy if we find out he's being coerced or something like that."

Aaron harrumphed. Everyone turned towards him with questioning glances.

"I have a limited understanding of superpowers, but I do not believe you need to thoroughly burn every part of someone's body to kill them," Aaron commented, voice tinged by skepticism.

"We can't make that assumption. The burn might as well be post-mortem to throw off possible investigation," Michael countered, folding his arms.

"That would get coercion or manipulation out of the question almost entirely," Nila added, looking between Michael and Aaron. "Igni wouldn't care to cover his tracks if he knew his actions were being, uh, sponsored. The contractors would have to extend some semblance of protection to this guy, even if he was being coerced."

Aaron chuckled, leaning backwards and looking off into blank space, as if reminiscing. "As much as that would make logical sense, it's not true. Black ops units' express purpose is carrying out operations unofficially, so in the case of capture, the government can dump all responsibility on the operatives as independent parties. They did it all the time in Vietnam for all sorts of reasons."

"Right," Nila replied, sighing. "Sorry about that random bout of naivete."

"So we're back to square one in figuring out an approach to this?" Edgar voiced the thoughts of everyone.

"Yeah, but there's other things to think about before actually going out and, well, doing it." Michael waited a few seconds before speaking again, to see if anyone else had anything to bring up. When nobody did, he spoke, "Well, Edgar said we're going to be superheroes."

"Yes, so?" Edgar asked, raising a curious eyebrow.

Michael looked down at the table, fidgeting with the edge of his sleeve.

"Don't we need costumes?" he said, quietly and hesitantly.

As if a dam had broken, everyone at the table - Aaron included - burst out laughing. Michael felt the humiliation slowly rise, instantly regretting ever bringing it up, but he perked up when he heard Nila start speaking.

"As funny as the delivery of that line was, I think he raises a fair point," Nila defended, still working out the last dredges of giggliness out of her system. "Costume means armor, tools to go with it to use in combat, face concealment… It's not a stupid thing to bring up."

She's either a fellow nerd or she likes likes me.

The pull of temptation almost made Michael look into Nila's cloud, but he stopped himself when he heard Aaron stand up.

"Very well. We have limited time before Igni strikes again, therefore, we need to divide our labor. What's there to be done?" Aaron said, looking at the assembled team before him.

"Investigating the crime scene itself is time sensitive, forensics will want to clean that place up fast if they haven't already," Michael said with a hand on his chin. "Though I suspect that with the glacial investigative pace, most of it will have been left intact."

"Talking with people who knew the most recent victim, as well as the last few victims for good measure," Nila added. "Visiting KPH is a must, we should talk to the doctors and the other patients to see what actually happened there. Getting them to speak will be hard, though."

"I could see if my dad knows anything about this?" Hilary proposed, her head tilted to the left. "He's still a pretty influential figure in the city, I'm sure he can pull strings for us."

"Risky," Aaron said, but then he nodded. "But it's a good idea. Every resource should be used. Is that all?"

"The super-cool and fantastic and kick-ass awesome superhero giga-hyper-ultra-costumes," Edgar said in a forcefully-deepened voice.

Everyone burst out laughing, except Michael.

"Okay, fuck off. All of you."

Welcome back to your regularly scheduled Wanderlust programming after a short break! You've accepted Cypher's job and now you have several things to do to catch the mysterious Igni, a fire-using serial killer who has been targeting alleged posthumans. You have several things to do, and a limited time to do them before Igni strikes again and another person dies to his fiery touch. Cypher has given you immunity from facial recognition and other forms of active digital surveillance, but he can't do anything if you accidentally slip up and your real name is inputted into the system - it would raise too many flags.

With that said, you have several options and a limited number of people: how will you use this turn? You have 25.9 Charges!

You have 3 actions per turn; tactics, strategy and certain combos will allow you to either null or discount the price of certain actions. Putting more people on the same action will yield better results.

The color of the vote option signals the amount of risk that Aaron predicts, assuming Michael is the one to do every single action. Vote by plan, and specify who does what!

Wits: ▰▰▰▰▱
Social: ▰▰▰▱▱
Knowledge: ▰▰▰▰▰ (!!!)
Guts: ▰▰▰▱▱

Skills (very broad summing up, tell me if more are to be added):
  • Computer engineering
  • Software engineering
  • Hacking
  • Internet security
  • Analytical thinking
  • Mathematics
  • Beginner martial arts
Special Trait: Learning Blitz - Learning anything will take half as much time, and his learning cap is increased by half. Retrieving academic information is trivial, be it in a library or online, and as a result, information-gathering, in general, is easier.
  • Abraham Blau: Friendly acquaintance. He likes you, even though he thinks you're a little bit weird. You met him because he knocked on the apartment door as a part of his introductory rounds to the neighbors. You didn't even know you had neighbors.
  • Aaron Ringstein: There's no one else in this world who loves you more than your father. There's no mountain he'd leave unmoved for you. The trust he feels for you is beyond words; your relationship is so strong that your power struggles to process it in full.
  • Miriam Ringstein: Your mom. The sweetest lady in the world and 95% of that sweetness is aimed at you. She'll always listen to your troubles and be there to give you a hug, or cook your favorite dish. Even if she sometimes comes out with sentences that would make a dried prune cringe its last drops of water.
  • Edgar: He likes you and appreciates you deeply. Your friendship is a deep and strong one, despite not having known each other for very long. There's an unspoken bond of mutual protectiveness between you two.
  • Kali: Thinks you and your friend Edgar look interesting.
  • Alex: She likes you and would like to know you more.
  • Hilary: You and Edgar helped her when she felt like she was dying. Going through this traumatic experience together has made her feel closer to you.
  • Nila: She feels deeply appreciative and thankful for what you're doing for her. She appreciates your paranoid, survival-oriented mindset and would've even accepted and even agreed with you had you chosen to leave her on the street. Despite recent developments, you have refused to look.
  • Cypher: He's violently indifferent but positively inclined, both because of your circumstances and because you passed his test. He'd feel bad if something happened to you and your team, but if you actually died tomorrow, he wouldn't think about it twice.
  • Socially Useful Cloud: The host gains the ability to visualize his own relationships with other people as 'colorful clouds' around their heads which only he can see. Different colors mean different things, and the host gains instinctive and innate understanding of what they mean.
  • Power Investiture: The host gains the ability to impart non-hosts with a parahuman ability tailored to that non-host (among other minor boons), based primarily on the nature and strength of the relationship between the host and the target.
  • Power Generation: The host gains the ability to impart himself with parahuman abilities based primarily on the nature and strength of the relationship between himself and other hosts, and the other host's own power. Generated powers can have weird interactions with powers imparted via the host's other ability.
    • Severing: The host gains the ability to create 'cuts' into anything he touches - the size of the cut is dependent on how much skin contact there is between the hand and the object. It appears to not be able to cut into flesh.
    • Strike Enhancer (Edgar): The host gains the ability to store, amplify and redirect potential energy around them in a radius of two feet, starting from their skin. This potential energy can be used to increase physical parameters, and accumulates very slowly over time into permanent parameter increases.
  • Advisor (Aaron Ringstein): The host gains a strong inner sense that allows him to distinguish which things, places, and people would be good or bad for someone. This effect is stronger for detecting negative things than positive ones, stronger still when someone he cares for is involved. On top of that, the host gains the ability to inspire/convince people (and things, based on experimentation) of virtually anything, as long as it is within the realm of possibility, up to virtually no hard limit. Inspire someone to lift weights, and their muscles will physically perform better, subtly changing physically to do so. Talk to a criminal about how his way of life isn't right, and he will change his mind. These effects will generally last a varying amount of time, which the host will be innately aware of when performing the action.

[] Date with Nila (2 Actions)
[] Talk to the Victims' Friends & Family

I'll be dead in the dirt before I pass up a good Social option, we must endeavor not to be a dead beat!

In the mean time, we can almost certainly get away with asking about the victim for now, and the crime scene cam probably wait until we have our
Super-cool Fantastic Kick-ass Awesome Superhero Giga-Hyper-Ultra-Costumes.

[X] Plan: Actually, lets be quick about this.
-[X] Investigate the Crime Scene
-[X] Talk to the Victims' Friends & Family
-[X] Super-cool Fantastic Kick-ass Awesome Superhero Giga-Hyper-Ultra-Costumes

Clock is ticking on the investigation and we should finally get the costume action off the table.

[X] Plan: We've got this
-[X] Date with Nila (2 Actions)
--[X] Geek out over codenames that you'd spring to your hapless housemates
--[X] (trigger second subvoting for name picks)
--[X] Pull Lever with Nila's permission afterwards
--[X] (also trigger power subvote along with Names, and to determine Charge expenditure)
-[X] Talk to the Victims' Friends & Family

Rationale dating Nila is that we'd be able to equip Michael with a shard power before a major fight afterwards. I think checking in her family could be sufficient to pick up Jessica's plot leads. Michael might also stumble upon the Achilles connection. With an emotional sense/manip power in play Michael would immediately become a much more efficient investigator.

I'll remove out Talk to the Victims' Friends & Family if it's deemed too many actions.

[X] Plan: Actually, lets be quick about this.

I would rather not do a red action that also has nothing to do with the current murder plot. Go on a date after we've done what we need to do for cypher.

the Doylist answer was clear: Igni was targeting alleged posthumans to get them off the board.

But what was the Watsonian reason?
Interesting, I've never seen the use of Doylist/Watsonian without there being some narrative layer involved.

[ ] Date with Nila (2 Actions)
Wait, Date with Nila is the most dangerous option? Intriguing.

You have 3 actions per turn; tactics, strategy and certain combos will allow you to either null or discount the price of certain actions. Putting more people on the same action will yield better results.
So regardless of who we send on actions we can do at most 3 things (unless we get a bonus effect as noted). It sounds like the "price" being referred to is action economy price, so if we want to make good on that type of effect how would we go about it? I'd assume we propose a plan that has more than 3 actions, attempt to justify it, and seek QM approval. Does that sound right, or does the system work a different way?

On a purely pragmatic level, going on the date improves chances for a social power. Investigations given are all social encounters, with some research maybe. That we'd have a degree of success on depending on capabilities and rolls. With a new layer we'd be picking up better leads. Yes we can rely on the teammates, but they might not be at the right time and has success checks of their own as well.

If my suspicion is right and the killer is another Trump, having an extra social layer to Michael could be invaluable in the encounter.

We could keep cooking the powers, it just takes a stray ingredient to come up and makes the dish not available. Lets not burn it. Also, narratively lets Michael unwind before committing to the chase.

If we're going with lets be quick about this.. I propose we at least map out tactics on how to approach the family. I'll do it the next time I get free.

[X] Plan: Power Investigation
-[X] Talk to the Victims' Friends & Family
--[X] Posing as investigators send Aaron and Nila to talk to Jessica's family.
--[X] Aaron in conjunction with Nila helps center them when difficult questions gets brought up.
--[X] How was Jessica the last time they saw her? Where did she used to frequent before her murder?
--[X] Convince them to go through her things to find clues about who could have targeted her.
--[X] Michael will try to take a copy of Jessica's electronics.
-[X] Investigate the Crime Scene
--[X] Michael tries to get his hands on forensic reports. Abandons attempt if Aaron deems it risky.
--[X] Nila and Aaron tries to talk to people who might have noticed something that time. Find the people who discovered Jessica.
--[X] Edgar and Hillary checks the crime scene discreetly, for evidence of power use and get the real picture behind what happened.
-[X] Super-cool Fantastic Kick-ass Awesome Superhero Giga-Hyper-Ultra-Costumes
--[X] Nila and Michael brainstorm names and themes (open subvote to decide on team name and cape names)
--[X] Practical gear, that focuses on identity obfuscation and does not obstruct mobility.
--[X] Disguised as normal clothing that wouldn't draw attention. Easy to put on and take off.
--[X] Add something that would be useful for each member's powers.
---[X] Electronic Voice projection for Aaron, something with potential energy stored for Michael, etc
--[X] Don't spend too much to blow budget or raise flags. Check with Aaron as usual.

Word of Gabbie is that both Edgar and Nila are able to make the crime scene investigation safer, stacking with both. With that in mind I think sending Nila that way makes sense. Aaron's power should hopefully be enough to handle the social investigation.

It's good that you gave Hillary the lighthearted gig. Maybe encourage her to come up with her own name and outfit, to get more into the spirit of things?
