Chapter 68
Chapter 68

The mist traveled down the hallway until coming to a dead end. Slowly, it coalesced and reformed back into Kruze as yet another teleportation circle appeared under him. A flash of light later, he reappeared in an empty room. A familiar room. He headed towards the study door, intending to leave the manor and make his grand entrance. As he opened the door, he was suddenly punched in the face. Surprised, the force of the punch threw him back and sent him crashing to the floor.

"I had a feeling that you were coming back here, of all places," stated Aruran as he stepped through the doorway.

"And a hello to you, brother," growled the vampire, his voice full of venom, the last word being spat out very reluctantly.

"Hmm? You still acknowledge me as your brother?" the old nobleman stated as he adjusted his attire, "I would have thought you would have cut me off already."

"You should have finished us off when you had the chance, Amos," retorted Kruze angrily as he reached inside his coat, "You know very well that our very nature cannot be changed."

"I would beg to differ," Aruran rebutted as he took out his pipe and lit it, "There are ways. One just has to be diligent. Time is something we have in abundance, after all."

"Why waste time on such frivolities when I can push for making our vampiric life much more favorable for us?" he boasted as he wrapped his crystal focus around his wrist.

"It seems we have to agree to disagree," the former replied as he got ready to fight.

"A pity. I had hoped that you would have come to your senses. Now I see it wasn't the case," stated the latter as magical energies sparked between his fingertips.

"Quite," Aruran agreed right before he dashed forward with a punch readied.

Before the punch landed, a spectral shield interposed itself between its summoner and the attacker. The fight was on.

"Back from whence you came!" chanted Lamy as she tried to cast a spell on Reyo but he flicked a pebble at her. It found its way to her throat. It barely left a mark but she stumbled on the last few words and the spell fizzled out to nothing.

"You think you can fight me!?" he gloated as his astral self grabbed an arrow that was hurtling towards him and threw it aside, "Fools!"

He sped towards them an aura flaring up around him. He sent his astral self forward, its claws swinging wide and scratching Aloe and Nene. Then, he leaped back, tossing a knife at the bard as she tried to sing with her lute, the sharp end leaving a cut on her finger as she tried to strum.

"Yo, not fair," shouted Polka as she chased after him.

She tried pummeling him but her astral self got in the way and blocked most of her attacks. She smirked as he flinched when she was able to land a blow on the spirit in the stomach.

"You dare!" he roared as he followed after her staggering form, dodging an incoming throwing knife.

The spirit was able to slice a gash in her arm in spite of her tipsy sway. However, that left him open as a spirit sword suddenly materialized and slashed his back. Forewarned, the half-elf leaned back as a ray of frost flew past him. He then gasped as arrows slammed into his chest. Ripping them out with a roar, he then grabbed the fennec girl and before their horrified eyes, buried his newly-formed fangs into her throat.

"Polka!" screamed the bard before misty stepping into range, "Let go of her!"

He grunted through his teeth as her rapier was stabbed into his side, but he kept drinking. When he relinquished his hold from her, she limply crumpled to the floor, two puncture wounds on her neck with two tracks of blood trailing out.

"Get away from her!" shouted Aloe as she suddenly flew up and tried to dive-bomb him.

"You're next!" he declared as his astral self grabbed her by the throat as she came near, plucking her out of the air like it was nothing.

"No!" shouted Nene as he fed on the succubus while Lamy hurried forward and dragged Polka away.

As he fed, he was forced down by his spirit, nearly avoiding more arrows. Taking his fangs out of the fiend's arm, his spirit then threw her into the ore bard, who caught her neatly. He then turned his gaze to the one shooting the arrows.

"I grow tired of your wooden toothpicks," he growled as he dashed towards her.

Taken aback, she could barely fight back as Reyo grabbed her and bit down on her neck, taking a long drought.

Then, he pushed her away. Blood Memoriam socked her in the stomach and then punched her in the face, sending her crashing into the wall behind her.

"You… are nothing but the cheat we met during the tournament," mocked Nene after giving some healing relief to the monk.

He roared when that vicious mocking interrupted his beatdown of the archer, "Then, I think I shall move on to you."

"Wait! Polka!" shouted their cleric as the fennec monk launched herself angrily at the pseudo-vampire

"What a hot-headed fool," he stated simply as his astral self backhanded her aside and knocked her out.

The half-snow elf then gasped when she found him standing in front of her. He had dashed under Aloe's flying knife as he blitzed toward her. She immediately swung her mace, landing a solid hit on his arm. Her eyes widened when the spirit punched away her spirit sword.

"Lamy!" roared the lion girl as she got up and continued shooting though she looked like she was in great pain.

"Valiant effort, young lady," he stated with a sneering look as his spirit then caught Botan's arrows and broke them. He then swung his leg and kicked her in the stomach. As she bent over gasping for breath, he taunted, "Can't breathe!?"

As he continued to laugh at her, he pushed her head up roughly and punched her several times in the chest. While her armor protected her from the brunt of it, she could still feel the surprising force behind the blows.

"Leave her alone!" shouted Nene as she tried to help, but the astral spirit intercepted her, parrying her rapier away and clawing at her as she tried protecting herself.

He just scoffed at her, leaving his astral spirit to cover his back while he grabbed the half-snow elf by the throat. She flailed her mace around at him but to no avail. Daggers and arrows were batted away as he sank his fangs into her neck and drank deeply.

"Most satisfactory," he stated as he stopped drinking. He then kicked her in the gut and in the head.

"Lamy!" shouted the lore bard as she finally ducked past the spirit and attempted to stab him directly.

"Useless," he told her as he moved much faster than she could and landed a punch in her gut.

Then, he flinched when a dagger finally struck him, cutting his left cheek. He turned his angry gaze at the succubus, who got ready to throw another. He moved, Blood Memoriam catching and destroying any arrows shot at him, and stopped in front of the fiend. She tried hitting him but he grabbed her by the throat and roughly tossed her in the air, punching her in the stomach as she fell down. He then introduced her head to his knee and as she reeled back in pain, he plunged his hand through her chest.

"ALOE!" screamed Nene and Botan as the succubus fell over backward, her body slowly flaking away in embers smelling of sulfur and brimstone.

"Sorry, I can't stay any longer. Thank you for having me," they heard in their heads.

"No… Aloe..." the lore bard muttered as she sank to her knees in shock, with a sense of despair hanging over her head.

Reyo chuckled and said, "Did you honestly think you could win? I am Reyo Credo and I shall rule this world! Nobody can stop me!"

An audible crack reached their ears. They turned to the door on the right wall. There seemed to be a dark aura running along the border between the door and the doorway. Without as much of a warning, the stone slab suddenly came off and flew straight at the half-elf.

"Blood Memoriam!"

The spirit moved in front of him and rapidly shredded the slab. However, all the dust and flying debris hid the attacker well and a second later, he flew out of the cloud with a bruise on his face. As the cloud settled, a familiar dog girl with her familiar spirit was revealed.

"You!" he shouted angrily.

"Miss Ina'nis told me you're a naughty boy," she said cheekily and confidently, "Time to teach you a lesson and take your fingers."

"Priestess Ina'nis?" muttered Nene in surprise.

"Well, what can I say?" asked the mysterious girl rhetorically, "I brought the cavalry."

Reyo then started laughing and said, "Fortune smiles on me! I have a chance for revenge! How can I not take it!?" He then charged straight at her while shouting, "Feast on her, Blood Memoriam!"

"Press the attack, Hound Dog!"

"So, have you given it any more thought?" asked the priestess.

"This is not the time for this!" the lore bard cried hysterically.

"Shikakakakakakakakaka-"

"Horaoraoraoraoraoraora-"

"Your succubus friend is still alive," Ina'nis stated, making her eyes go wide, "If you want, I can help you find her again… if you could join us."

"Erm," she hummed anxiously while looking around.

Botan had dragged herself over to Lamy and was pouring a healing potion down the cleric's throat. Reyo was busy fighting with Korone, their spirits matching each other blow for blow. Oga and his friends were still fighting the undead two rooms away. Nobody else can help her make this decision.

"Well?"

"I will say… "

Blades clashed and ground against each other, giving off minute sparks. Oga roared and continued wailing on his opponent, who matched him blow for blow. Off to the side, his companions were busy tangling with what remained of the vampire spawns. The ghasts were pretty much destroyed entirely.

"You think they're alright?" asked Shien as he stabbed a spawn a few times in the chest before stabbing upward through its lower jaw.

"They'll be fine," replied Yogiri as she leaned back against him, narrowly avoiding another spawn's claws, "I think they've seen just as much action as we have."

"Hope so," he muttered as the one he was attacking was suddenly gored from the side by the unicorn that was helping them.

Oga let off another roar, this time of triumph. The mazoku finally got the upper hand and had broken through the armor with a mighty attack. The chest piece had a large rent in it and blood flowed from it. The vampire Micheal roared in reply, somehow still able to move. He simply ripped the chest piece off with a single pull and tossed it aside. Then, his body gained a blood-red aura, wisps of it licking off like it was on fire.

"Oh? You can make use of your anger? Ha, this will be a battle of the ages," said the mazoku eagerly as he slowly gained the same type of aura.

Their next clash actually shook the foundation of the pillars around them.

Nene blinked. She was no longer in the ruined crypt. Instead, she was in the middle of the ocean. Again. She had a feeling that this was a running theme with the priestess' cult. Or at least, with this… being... she was following.

"What do we do now?" she asked.

"I will call him," the mysterious priestess stated as she spun to face her in fright, "But while I'm doing so, please close your eyes. I doubt you will be able to stare at him for long."

Taking her advice to heart, the bard closed her eyes. Soon after, she heard that strange language again. It felt like otherworldly, slimy things were sliding inside her head and down her neck when the mysterious words reached her ears. However, it didn't take long before a loud, rumbling voice replied to her. The slimy feeling intensified.

"So, you are the one she is interested in," the voice suddenly addressed her.

"Er, hello? Nice to meet you?" she replied hesitantly.

"Greetings, Nene Momosuzu," it said, "Do you acquiesce to coming into the fold?"

"Eh?"

"Do you agree to becoming one with knowledge?" it asked again.

"I..." she started before pausing to contemplate everything. If she joins, she could find Aloe again. Talk to her again. Maybe… she can go adventuring together with them again. But should she? Will this one provide help with their current problem? She wasn't so sure… but after being dragged here after saying 'yes', she probably had no other choice but to throw caution to the wind.

She looked to where the voice was coming from and without opening her eyes, she said resolutely, "Yes."

A pause.

"Very well. It is time to open your mind and help you to see."

She shuddered as she felt that slimy feeling slowly encompass her entire body. This was followed by a slight buzzing in her left ear and then a tingling sensation in her right ear and along her spine. Then, she felt herself rising into the air as if being lifted up by some unknown force.

"Oop, not the time to fly away now," she heard Ina'nis say.

Opening an eyelid a fraction, she saw that she wasn't in the middle of the ocean anymore. Instead, she was in a forest clearing while a large purple tentacle was coiled around her waist. Her hand was tugged on and she found the priestess looking at the back of her left hand. The symbol she saw at the prison ruins on Gekko was inked on it.

"Humu, humu, looks good," the priestess declared to the bard as she looked at her, "No need to worry though, as it won't be visible to prying eyes in the real world."

"What about the fight?" Nene asked in a hushed tone.

"No problem," she stated as she let go of the hand, "Time is frozen while we talked to 'him'. When we return, time marches on as usual. Anyway, you have a little task to do when we get back."

"What task?" she asked, anxiousness blooming in her heart as the tentacle lowered her down.

"Nothing difficult. Just make sure Reyo is defeated," she stated before adopting a thinking pose, "Hmm, am I forgetting something." Then, as if a lightbulb lit up, she exclaimed, "Oh, yeah." She then poked Nene's forehead with her finger.

For a moment, she looked at the mysterious priestess in puzzlement. What was that supposed to do? Was she-

The lore bard then screamed as information started getting forcefully stuffed into her head.

The vampire was breathing heavily as was his opponent. The fight she gave was impressive for a normal human, but he was confident he could overcome this little roadblock. After several clashes with her weapon, he thought he got a good grasp of her abilities. As tough as she was, there was no possible way she could match a vampire.

Fortune was not with him when she made her next move. As she swung her mace, he raised his longsword to block it. Much to his surprise, his blade was met by her shield and slammed onto his armor. Instead of scraping against it as he expected, the head of the mace grew blindingly bright for a moment before practically breaking through his chest piece and slamming into his chest. An unbelievable surge of pain wracked his body as he screamed.

"A holy warrior! Damn you!" he yelled as he staggered back.

"That is not the only thing in store for you, poor damned soul," she stated.

"Just what..." he started before trailing off when he realized what she meant.

He gasped and gagged when arrows rained down on him. Most of the arrows bounced off his intact armor on his arms, but many were able to go through the rent in his chest piece. Several pierced his heart.

"No... impossi-"

Noel watched as he crumbled to dust. Hearing footsteps behind her, she didn't turn around, instead choosing to look around and confirm the condition of her knights. She was proud of them, for they had taken out the rest of the undead with very little trouble.

"Are you alright, salen aestar?"

"I feel pity for him, salen Flare," she stated as she turned to face her lover, "A poor soul turned to evil with very little chance of redemption."

The dark-skinned half-elf stepped up to her and pulled her close, forehead to forehead, as she said, "Such is the life of a warrior such as you. Be strong."

"As long as you are here, I am," the knight replied lovingly before stepping away to address her knights, "Knights of Fort Valia! Form up! We ride to aid the city!"

"Yes, Captain!"

The vampire gritted her teeth as she did her best to avoid the damnable zombie. How dare they interrupt her fun time! And she was so loud too! She wouldn't be surprised that her shrieking could bring the dead back to life.

"Here I come!"

"And all that incessant rambling!" she bemoaned internally as she avoided yet another swipe of her sword, "Doesn't she ever cease!?"

Suddenly, she crashed into something solid. Groping in front of her, she was taken aback by the invisible wall. Glaring at the necromancer, she growled angrily as she figured out quickly what had just happened. Turning around at the sound of scraping metal, she was horrified to find the deranged, smiling zombie dragging the sword on the ground as she stepped closer to her.

"Locked in here with me~~~~"

Her confidence hit rock bottom.

Oga hissed, both in annoyance and in pain. He didn't expect that Micheal von Christner would become ridiculously strong in his rage. His arms burned and ached as he weathered the thunderous blows with his own blade. So far, it was like a contest of strength that was slowly getting way out of hand.

"RAAH!"

He crashed into one of the supporting pillars but was thankfully still standing. Gritting his teeth, he pushed himself off. However, that left him open. He looked up and his eyes widened a little as he watched the vampire leap up towards him with his curved greatsword raised high. Yet, at the zenith of his leap, he was knocked to the ground by a charging unicorn.

"Ha! Nice one!" he cheered on as he steadied himself on his shaky feet. Then, he felt a hand go under his armpit and help steady him. Glancing to his side, he noted a familiar mop of black and white hair.

"You alright?" asked Shien with concern as the vampire got to his feet after crashing to the floor.

"Heh, never felt better," the mazoku replied with a grin.

"Well, we already mopped up the extras," the jackal-folk informed him as flying daggers courtesy of Yogiri flew at Micheal. One missed but one was buried to its hilt in the vampire's chest.

"Heh, we better finish this one up then," said the former as the vampire pulled out the dagger and tossed it aside. With a sudden burst of speed, he rushed down the rogue and swung but she disappeared with a burst of sound that crashed against him.

"Have you finished yapping? We need to settle him already!" she yelled at them as she reappeared by their side.

"No problem!" he shouted back as he got up. He then felt something getting slipped into his free hand. Looking down, he saw that it was a carved wooden dagger. He raised his brow.

"Can't go killing vampires without a stake, right?" snarked his friend beside him.

"Heh, got that right," he muttered with a grin as he tucked it into his belt.

With a roar, in again, intercepting the vampire's blade as it tried to dig into the unicorn's flank.

"Oi, I'm not done yet!" he shouted as he continued swinging his weapon again like his life depended on it.

Metal crashed against metal and the fight resumed.

"SHIKAKA!"

"HORAYO!"

Both spectral fists collided, the force generated pushing both spirits and their owners back.

Reyo scoffed, looking on angrily, "You still wish to fight back? How brave you are."

"Hmph! You took part in all this, of course I'm going to fight," Korone retorted, "I'm bringing you in, dead or alive."

He scoffed again and replied, "Fool! I will not be imprisoned by the likes of you! You will die before I ever stoop so low as to be defeated by you!"

Before he could advance, a voice shouted, "Cheater!"

He scowled when he noticed the blond girl on her feet, brandishing her rapier and surprisingly, a dagger.

"Oh? And what can you do, other than insult me?" he asked dismissively.

"You talk about feasting? It's cooking time!" she shouted as she pointed her dagger at him.

Much to his shock, an orange beam streaked out from the dagger point straight at him. He stared, outwardly unflinching, as Blood Memoriam deflected the beam of crackling energy upwards. However, it was disturbing as she had never displayed that spell before. Just what had happened to her to suddenly develop powers similar to his. As powerful as he was, six opponents were a bit too much. Granted, he could easily take out a few of the weaker ones, the dog girl would always get in his way. And he had no idea who was the second extra. Damn it all. He would have to escape and perhaps fight on more even terms.

"Damn it all," he repeated out loud as he looked past the bounty hunter with narrowed eyes, "If it weren't for you, I would have finished them off. No matter... I shall retreat for now and destroy you another day!"

He then made a run for the door that his master went through. Lucky for him, his spirit deflected another potshot at him.

"Enough! I won't be stopped!" he roared as he grabbed the heavy cover of his master's coffin and tossed it straight at her friends.

He made a dash for the exit; an explosion and a shower of debris followed in his wake as he got out of the room. He then went through the door to his right and found himself in a room with several coffins. He took another right and peeked inside. He growled when he noticed that the undead and the spawn in the room were huddling against the walls of the room.

"Fools!" he shouted as he burst in, "You cower in your corners while intruders stomp around your master's abode. Hopeless! Redeem yourselves and kill the intruders in your master's place of rest! NOW!"

This shook the spawn out of their turning and they quickly brought the rest of the undead out of it too. Satisfied, he left the room to continue making his escape. Heading down the tunnel to his right, the tunnel led to a dead end with a glowing magic circle. With a smile, he stepped into it and disappeared in a flash of light.

Nene wanted to move but couldn't. There was no way she could reach her recovering friends. And what could she do when she did? How could she-

"This cannot pass."

The priestess' words seemed to echo in her brain as four purple tentacles sprouted out of her back. Aiming them at the rapidly moving cover, crackling energies poured onto their tips as four eldritch beams slammed into the coffin cover, breaking it apart and sending it all over the place. The bard continued to gape as the eldritch priestess looked at the fleeing faux vampire and tried capturing him.

"Tch, such a slippery eel," Nene heard her mutter as the summoned tentacle failed to grasp a hold of his ankle.

The bard then took a fearful step back as Ina'nis turned to face her.

"No need to be afraid, my dear Nene," she stated with an otherworldly smile, which suddenly became pencil-thin and devoid of emotion. She then turned to the main entrance of the room and muttered, "How annoying. He is becoming quite a pain."

The lore bard then became aware of the familiar, slimy, sensation at the back of her mind. And then, as the occupants of the previous room burst in, a rumbling voice weighed down on her and spoke in her mind, "See how the world bends to my avatar's will..."

Tentacles burst forth from the darkest corners of the room as the eldritch priestess gestured and chanted in an unknown tongue. Every enemy was bound and held in place, every limb tied down, not one able to move freely.

"No mortal eyes can see them, for they cannot comprehend. But those that have made a pact with me... all shall be laid bare should they will it..."

The tentacles on her back then aimed at the undead, the tips slowly gathering energy. With another word, the four eldritch beams shot forward, piercing through multiple bodies like a hot knife through butter.

"These, you will learn in due time. You only need to preserve the pact."

With the enemies defeated, Ina'nis turned around to address her, "Now that is taken care of, I- why are you crying, Nene?"

She blinked in surprise. She then felt something trailing down her cheek. Reaching up to touch it, she brought her fingers to her eyes. Blood. The stress on her mind reached a peak, pushed to the brink. Her vision swam and she felt as if she was flying as darkness consumed her sight.

Polka quickly ran forward to catch Nene's falling body before she could hit the ground. She and Botan looked over her worriedly while Lamy marched up to Ina'nis and growled, "What. Did. You. Do."

"Ah, no worries. She just saw too much for her mind to bear," stated the priestess with a smile, "All she needs is a little rest."

"Huh, so, is my help still needed?" asked Korone as she suddenly peered over the cleric's shoulder, surprising her.

"For now, it is. Later, I might be hiring you for your services," was the reply.

"Okay!"

"Is this connected to Reyo?" asked Lamy with a frown, still looking unconvinced, "You will be sending Miss Korone after him, I presume."

"Perhaps," she stated as she calmly walked past them, "Come, let us be rid of this coffin. Does anyone have a fire source?"

The rich lining of the coffin made suitable tinder, especially after getting ripped to ribbons by the lion girl. As she lit the spark to set it alight, the eldritch priestess simply smiled at the job well done.

"What now?" asked Polka once the fire was roaring.

"Well, what else do you see here?" Ina'nis asked rhetorically, motioning to the other two coffins, "We continue burning."

The greatswords grinded against each other amidst the growls and grunts from both combatants. With a roar, Oga overpowered and pushed Micheal off and tried to follow up. Unfortunately, he got a kick to the stomach that halted his advance. Two more furious swings sent his opponent back on the defensive. With a loud yell, he tried taking back his advantage and charging back in. Mirroring his yell, the vampire swung his own sword downwards, but it wasn't aimed at the mazoku.

A veritable shock ran up his arms as the large, curved sword collided with his and forced it down. His eyes widened as his blade crashed against the ground as he continued moving forward. He grit his teeth when he noticed it curving ever so slightly as a minute crack developed a third away from the tip.

"Damn it!" he roared as he brought his sword around for another swing.

Unfortunately for him, the vampire seemed to be targeting his sword more than himself, hacking at the cracked part of his blade. He became even more enraged when the part shattered and broke off after a few clashes. Micheal then took a few steps back and prepared to swing, the blade of his sword glowing red. The same stance he took before the mazoku was sent crashing into the pillar.

"Gah, this is going to hurt," he thought to himself as a plan formed behind his knitted brow. With another yell, he charged in as fast as he could.

The enemy's blade moved, slicing through the air as he moved in with his own blade raised. He could feel the curved blade biting into his side, cutting through skin and muscle but just that.

"OGA!"

The rage dulled the pain and moved him forward; his blade found its mark and was buried into the vampire's shoulder as he felt the guard of the vampire's blade pushing against his skin. He noted carefully how his opponent freed one hand and reared it back to punch. He tilted his head to the side to try and avoid it while making a similar motion, except to grab instead of a strike. His head crashed into the vampire's helmet, leaving a visible dent in it. As Micheal flinched, the mazoku kept a firm grip as he let go of his sword and pulled the wooden dagger from his belt. With one swift motion, he stabbed his opponent straight in the heart.

"Yeah!/ Alright!"

The vampire froze. He then gazed down at his chest. At the same time, Oga vomited blood as he fell over backward, crashing to the ground. The former then wheezed out and fell to his knee.

Pulling out the wooden carving, the von Christner stated, "Well, it seems you are the victor."

"Heh, thanks to my friends," Oga coughed out as he grinned at the vampire, "Good fight."

"Indeed… I am, at least, glad to have fought honorably one last time," the former stated before collapsing forward. Dust spread out as the horned helmet bounced once and landed at his feet.

Oga coughed again as he continued to bleed out before feeling a soothing sensation. Surprised, he felt his side and found his wound closed. He also heard hooves.

"I suggest a week's rest to recover from this ordeal," stated the unicorn as it approached him with its horn a-glow. As the light dimmed, signaling the end of the healing, it continued, "I suppose I should check on the one that summoned me before I leave."

"Yosh, that was a good fight," said Shien as he and Yogiri approached as the mazoku gingerly got to his feet.

"Ah, it sure was," he replied with a grin as the unicorn teleported up a floor with a flash of dim light.

"Hey, guys! You won?"

Their heads looking up spotted a familiar fennec fox girl looking at them from the balcony.

"Yo! You settled your fight too?" called out Oga as he waved.

"Yeah… not without trouble."

"When have we adventurers settled anything without trouble?" he quipped.

"Eh heh, yeah..." she muttered sheepishly. She then turned around and said loudly, "Ah, hold on! I'll get her."

Shrugging, he turned to his friends and said with a toothy smile, "I think we're done here. Let's check up on them and then head back. I'm sure Lord Aruran and the others got through some interesting fights of their own."

"Heh, I bet none of them fought with a unicorn by their side," replied Yogiri, "Well, unless you count Civia."

Sharing chuckles between them, they headed up the stairs to the upper level.

Destroyed
Destroyed

The hollow boom seemed to be coming from a few rows away, but coming nearer. Fubuki's ears pricked up upon hearing it and she stopped in her tracks, Izuru and Rikka stopping with her.

"Something is coming," she warned them, prompting everyone to get ready for a fight.

A wall nearby suddenly burst open, sending debris and dust flying. After waiting for a few seconds for the dust to settle, they saw Lord Aruran on bended knee as if he landed there, a single groove in the road leading up to him. His clothes were in a mess but his hair was only slightly out of place.

"Why won't you stay down, Amos?" asked a voice from within the house as a soot-covered nobleman stepped out. His fine clothes were torn here and there and his hair messed and tousled.

"Hmph, I have to defend the city after all. There is no way I will stand down from this," declared the lord as he got up, standing tall with pride, "And I think you can stop calling me Amos. I am Lord Aruran Daiso. This is my city and you are not welcome."

"Fool! I will not be denied my victory!" the former roared as he pointed his finger at the lord, a pinprick of fire materializing.

"The fires of Tamamo beg to differ," stated the fox maiden as she gestured a sphere in front of her and then gestured to the vampire.

"What!?" yelled Kruze when the spell fizzled out at his fingertips. Looking around and finally noticing them, he glared at the fox girl and shouted, "Insolence!"

"Izuru. Rikka. Back up," she stated calmly as she gestured a mystical sign. As her helpers nodded and backed off a few feet, she chanted and ordered, "Trick or treat, Superstition! Make clones!"

An exact replica of herself appeared next to her, already gesturing and chanting softly. Several seconds later, three more mirror images appeared around them. Around the same time, he leaped straight at her.

"You lost focus."

Aruran suddenly appeared in front of him and kicked him in the stomach. Kruze crashed to the ground while he landed on his feet. Glancing behind him, he stated, "Best be on your way. This fight is not yours to finish."

"It's fine, sir. I think we'll stick around," said Rikka.

"Yeah. We can pull you out if things get too much," added Izuru.

"I will burn you to ash!" shouted the angry vampire as several balls of fire appeared over his head.

The two bards glanced at each other and nodded. They then strummed a note and sang the note. Higher and higher the volume went until it became unbearable for him and he clasped his ears in irritation, causing the spell to dissipate into nothing. Then, the fox girl clones then swarmed around him and trying to hit him with their maces.

"Enough!" yelled Kruze as threw his arms out, unleashing a burst of electricity around him, destroying the clones. However, that left him open as a blast of light blew up in his face.

"ARGH!"

Aruran didn't waste this opportunity. He dashed in and landed a powerful punch, the power behind it sending the vampire flying into a light post. As he bounced off, the noble kicked him up into the air and punched upward. An audible crack rang out as the vampire bent into an odd angle.

"...Damn you... and damn your followers," wheezed out Kruze as he tried to crawl away.

"I presume they destroyed your coffin," stated the nosferatu as he stepped after him, only pausing to take a sending stone from his breast pocket.

"I shall have my revenge, Amos, I swear," declared the von Christner when he caught up and grabbed him by the neck. His hands started glowing and the vampire seemed to freeze in place.

"You will do nothing of the sort," he added when a tree burst out of the ground behind him, startling the others. Archdruid Kshryr phased and stepped out of it, the tree then going back into the ground.

"I rather not petition her to do that again, Aruran," he told the noble rather annoyedly. Glancing at the frozen captive, he continued, "Him?"

"Yes," he confirmed, "If you would please."

The archdruid raised his hand, a mote of light engulfing it fully. Placing it on the head, he then said, "With the power of the sun, may you be laid to rest."

A blinding ray of light issued forth and disintegrated Kruze von Christner instantly, leaving behind only dust.

Aruran nodded and said solemnly, "A dark plot halted./ Hope rises upon yonder breaks./ A new day is born."

"Er... but it's still too early for the sun," commented Rikka hesitantly.

"Oh, be quiet."

Chapter 70
Epilogue

A few weeks had gone by. Lord Aruran had his hands full explaining what was happening that night, but came out of it with more renown than ever before. And by extension, the adventurers guild. The week after the vampire incursion, the guild house was flooded with buckets and bouquets of flowers, symbols of thanks from the people that lived in the city. Yes, the numbers dwindled over the weeks, but members were very amused at Miyabi's expense when he spent most of his time trying to find space to put everything. Eventually, most of it was sent and distributed among those that responded to the noble's call for aid, much to their amusement.

But that was their issue. The members went through their own things. Every member was given the next few weeks off, including Nene and her friends. Polka decided to try and learn fire-eating.

"Blergh! This tastes bad!" exclaimed the fennec fox girl while making a face after tasting a bit of fire-water straight from the bottle, "How could you stand this?"

Camryn laughed as he took the bottle out of her hand, "That's not for drinking. It's too concentrated for that. I soak my performance torches in them so that I can light them easily. It burns up really fast so once I put out the torches in my mouth, I don't taste it."

"So, can you teach me?" she asked eagerly.

"Sure, sure," he replied with a smile, "Just be sure not to them. You'll get poisoned by it, for one. And I rather not have to wash them."

"No problem!"

"Alright," he stated as he lit one of the torches with a flame he produced from his fingers, "Now, the thing about eating fire is..."

Lamy took time to write a few letters to home with details about her adventures so far. She also took time to get to know the other notable people that helped them out that night.

The half-snow elf slowly picked up the cup of tea and enjoyed the heat as the hot vapors wafted around her face. Taking a careful sip, she found the drink of unique taste and said, "Thank you for the tea. It is delicious."

"Thank you, Lamy," replied a smiling Fubuki as she pushed a plate of treats nearer to her, "Please, have some more."

"Ah, if I must. Thank you for having me today," she replied as she picked up a tart to nibble on.

Botan took Rushia up on her offer and decided to learn how to weave necromantic energy in her arrows.

"This has a wrongness to it," the lion girl said with a frown as she watched the sickly green energy swirl around the arrowhead.

"Obviously," snarked the necromancer as she looked over her work, "Necromancy isn't meant for sunshine and rainbows. It is meant to weaken and debilitate. To speak with the dead and gain insight from the knowledge of those long past. And maybe animate some bones and rotting flesh."

"You seem very calm about that last part," replied Botan as she wrinkled her nose at the thought of undead running around, under supervision or not.

"Keep in mind I am not a stranger to such things," the pink-and-black-clothed necromancer said simply, "And, I did make sure to ask permission before I raised them."

"Hmm?"

"Anyway, let's see how well this holds… Shoot the target."

Meanwhile, Nene worked with Towa and Priestess Ina'nis to find Aloe. This produced interesting results.

"Why did you bring me here, Towa?" asked the lore bard in puzzlement as she stood in front of a single modest-looking house that was facing the richer side of the city right across the main road.

"You'll see," the half-devil replied mysteriously as she knocked on the door.

It opened a crack, a strange yellow eye peeking out before it was opened. "Hurry up, come in before anyone notices," a hushed voice requested.

As the both of them hurried inside, Nene was quite surprised to find a zombie in a maid outfit holding the door open. The red-headed zombie quickly closed the door and then ushered them to a sizable dining room. There, seated at the table, was Rushia. In front of her was a crystal ball.

"Thank you, Ollie," said the necromancer teacher as she stood up.

"My pleasure, my lady," replied the zombie maid as she took the chair away.

Turning to them, she asked, "Towa, did you bring it? And what is it that I should be looking for?"

Clearing her throat haughtily, the warlock stated, "Yes, I did. You would be looking for its sister stone that I gave to the succubus."

The lore bard's attention zeroed on her. "You found Aloe!?" she asked eagerly as she turned to grab her shoulders.

"Let. Go."

As she did so, the half-devil harrumphed and continued, "Yes. I have thanks to Miss Ina'nis' information." Taking something out of her pocket, she added, "Here. Hold this."

It was a black, smooth obsidian stone with red lava-colored streaks going all over it like lightning. It felt cool to touch and smelt like brimstone. In the background, she could hear Rushia chanting something.

"This is a specially crafted sending stone," she explained as the bard stared at the stone, "Your friend has the other one. With it, you can communicate with her. Twenty-five words each use of it. I will have you know that while the stones are specifically tuned to each other, you won't be able to use them for long periods. After an hour of use, you will have to leave it alone for a week before it restores the connection. So, take care not to take too much time for this."

"...Thank you," Nene replied in awe as she continued to stare at the stone.

"I see her," announced Rushia, "Is she supposed to be in her room?"

"Yes, I told her to stay in today," informed the warlock. Turning back to the bard, she said, "Go. See for yourself."

Slowly, she walked over to the necromancer, who gestured to the crystal ball. Taking a look, she gave a soft gasp. On its clear surface, was Aloe. She was seated in front of a dresser in a room of sorts. It looked like a simple room, maybe a little small, and it reminded her of the dorm room she had in the guild house. She was wearing her normal clothes and additionally, her shorter horn seemed to be a little longer and almost the same length as the other.

Grasping the sending stone nervously, she asked mentally, "Hello? Aloe?"

A few seconds went by before the succubus in the ball gasped and almost dropped the stone. Another few seconds went by before she heard a reply.

"Nene? Is that you?"

Small rivulets formed at the edge of her eyes as she gasped with relief.

"Aloe! Oh, my gods! Are you alright?"

"Of course, I'm fine! I can't die there! I'm way too great for that… Did we win?"

She laughed as she replied.

"Yes. Yes, we did."

"Heh, nice… alright, so… what else happened? Tell me everything."

While all this was happening, Ina'nis had been observing everything else quietly. She knew, after some words with the Ancient One, things were not resolved in their entirety. While the vampires were destroyed and their coffins burned to ash, their followers still remained. Reyo, primarily. Out of all of them, he presented the most trouble and no doubt, he will lead the rabble in the absence of the von Christners. Still, there was still time. Korone will be sent to hunt him down and failing that, get as much information about him and whoever he has around him. Things will be resolved soon enough.
