Voidborn: A Pokémon\MGLN adventure

"Edward, your turn!" You say, planning on using counter.

"Now! Aura Sphere!" Parti's command all but demands that you change your plan.

"Edward, protect!" A wall of glass blocks the energy ball from hitting Edward, and he's too far for you to tell him another attack before Lucario tries it again. "Edward get closer!"

"Lucario, when he gets close use Meteor Mash." Lucario takes the chance to dash forward and attack with another overhead attack.

"Now, Edward, counter attack him!" Your command isn't surprise to Parti, and she takes it in stride.

"Lucario, it won't work if you knock him out in one blow! Hit him hard!" The attack connects, Edward stumbles, but lashes out with a Headbutt to Lucario's chest. You can't really describe how the Lucario folds in on itself as it flies backwards. When it hits the ground, it lands in a sickening tumble.

"Ah, he'll be fine." Parti says, glancing over at the Lucario. "Probably." Edward seems to be super close to unconsciousness himself. Maybe you should get him to retreat. "Time for my last Pokémon, go Mawile!" Parti's last pokémon was that Mawile that ruined those flowers. It's definitely limiting itself to level 27.

We can't switch out Edward without putting our next pokemon at a disadvantage so we might as well repeat the last plan. Fighting moves should be neutral against a Steel/Fairy type.

Edited for not being able to use Protect.

You don't have Protect. It's a once per combat thing, not per turn.

Ouch, that was a crit attack for sure. She also doesn't seem to worry more about her pokes.
Also, just to be sure: Once the other trainer switches pokes due having their current one defeated, can we switch ourselves as well without receiving a free attack? So far that seems to be the case, if only in official battles, but now I wasn't sure.

Nope, you cannot switch without giving them a turn. Counter cannot actually crit, the reason why you did so much damage was because you countered for almost all of Edward's health. He literally has 1 health left.

"Alright, now then, Play Rough!" Parti's command allows you just enough time to yell out to Edward.

"Edward, dodge and counter!" Edward attempts to sidestep the attack, but the Mawile was ready for that. it simply suplexes your poor dragon into the ground. You quickly return Edward with some light praise. This is her last Pokémon, you're in the final stretch!

I have to keep looking up the type interactions, especially for Fairy.

I think that Allison is our best bet here. Apparently, Fairy isn't very effective against Fire for some reason, and Fire is supereffective against Steel. It looks like most of Mawile's attacks are Physical so Light Screen is probably not all that useful.

That went fast. Perhaps we could make plans including multiple rounds and/or strategies, so that updates aren't that short? It's up to the QM though. Perhaps they won't be so dry to write this way.

[X][Battle plans] Plan Allison

Being limited to only 4 Moves makes spam viable, for good and bad.

Yeah, the three round structure is to prevent one turns from happening like this too often. It still happens, because sometimes the Pokémon faints first turn.

You release Allison, she gives a bow and a twirl of Raising Heart. "Marie, let's show her our strength together!" She speaks directly into your mind.

"Mawile use Thunder Fang!" Parti's shout doesn't faze you. You know Allison's faster.

"Allison, Mystical Fire." You say, with a smile. (Very Easy, d100=13, Critical Success) She bows, slightly to acknowledge your command. As she straightens, she raises her arm and staff into the air. A great firey tornado rises into the sky, encircling and burning the Mawile. Parti stares at the fire created by your Pokémon. You however, have a different thing on your mind. "Allison, you're showing off again." She tries to put on the image of childlike innocence she had practiced in her Braixen form, but quickly realizes you're not gonna fall for it.

Parti seems to straighten out after Allison starts to pout. Her attention is back on you, and she speaks,"That, was a BIG fire. Just, phwoooosh!" She throws her arms up as she voices the onomatopoeia. "Great fight, although you should really be up against your fifth gym with a team that strong. Here's your badge, I'mma just watch the recording of that pillar of flame a few times." Parti throws you the gym badge, and turns around a dumb smile on her face. You can vaguely see a shape leaning up against a street lamp behind her.

"Ah my sister, the person who loves to be beaten, if only to see the other side's show of force. Maybe you should get your Mawile before you wander off?" Mortimer asks, she steps out of the her-shaped shadow under the street lamp. Ghost types are weird sometimes, your friend Mandy has pulled that same trick off a couple of times. Did you remember to call her after the Ghost-type gym? You remember mentioning that you'll call her if something involving ghost-types happens. That would count, right? Eh, you'll call all of your friends later.

"Congratulations on beating the Shunner Sisters, from here your gym challenge is only on the up. Go the full distance and beat the elite four for us, okay? With the showing you gave, we expect nothing less!" Mortimer calls out, waving you off. The Shunner Sisters quickly run inside, you must have missed something while you were thinking.

The world really conspiring against me. First time I try to write it, nah dentist appointment you forgot about, have aches all day to prevent you from thinking the way you want. Day after, party I forgot I promised to go to. Day after that, Persona 4 Golden came out.

At least I've got the update out now.

Save me from Persona please.

Huh, I forgot about Marie's friends. And Parti does not match my image of a judge after her reaction to Mystical Fire.

I figure that we exploer the town one more time before leaving. I THINK we spent time with all of our pokemon companions recently so let's spend the day with our human companions.

You should try to use telepathic commands to not telegraph your intention to the rival.

Day after that, Persona 4 Golden came out.

Meh, SMT mainline games are better IMO. Shouldn't you by now have played this already through emulation or whatever anyway?

I forgot about Marie's friends

They exist off-screen, but are barely mentioned ingame.

Should, but it really doesn't matter. Anyone in a position to take advantage of it probably won't.

I generally don't like emulators. I also don't have a PS that isn't the first one.

The End
Alright, so for those of you who haven't figured out by the nearly 2 months of silence, I've completely lost inspiration for this quest.
The first month was me trying to push on in spite of that, the second was spent figuring out how to break the news.

SO! I have a large number of problems with this quest, and I feel like you all have a significantly less large set of problems. Seeing as how I'm trying to get better, tell me your problems! I'll go first with my 3 biggest problems.

1. The Homebrew system

This was stupid. Between overpowering crits (did the math, they weren't actually rarer. Can we all have a collective facepalm at this?), and a social-fu system that doesn't naturally work in the world as given, this was a LARGE mess of things. Gah, for the next couple of quests I run, they'll either be lacking maths and mechanics in their entirety, or wholesale stealing a tabletop RPG system.

2. The PACING

This is entirely my fault, giving the players the keys to the kingdom, and not really knowing where I was going with the plot. Yeah, turns out the seat of my pants aren't the best source of flight. I'll plan out my next few quests HEAVILY in advance.

3. The Pokemon

I didn't really know how I was treating them, it was a mess until I knuckled down and treated them as if they were actually characters. (Really wish I had been able to give them more quirks through time spent, but I wasted most of that) From now on, the only people not getting Character sheets, are the one scene wonders.

Please, dig into the mess of my quest, I want to be able to salvage as much knowledge as I can from this.

Sorry to hear that. I have to agree that it felt like you didn't really have a plan, especially in the beginning. Marie's friends got a lot of attention at the start of the quest and then rarely, possibly never, showed up again. Even towards the end, I was wondering how many Jewel Seeds were left and what would happen after they were all found. I wish I could give more detailed feedback, but I can't really think of anything more specific.
