The peace in Brockton Bay is a fragile thing. The Protectorate is outnumbered by the gangs, Empire 88 in particular. But the Empire has finally crossed the line. A new hero, Medicus, a tinker specializing in medicine and first aid, is attacked in her home by Hookwolf. She and her father are killed, and Brockton Bay stands on a precipice.
