Updated UI for Quests and User Fiction thread lists

Initial release New
An update for the customized quests/story thread lists has been deployed.

A reminder, after creating a story/quest you can set the icon used in the thread list and for embedding by external parties.
Apologies the icon upload code being used doesn't work when creating the thread :(

This has a laundry list of small and large changes, focused on improving QoL and reducing unexpected behavior
  • The thread creation date is shown on mobiles, and the page counts are not. This can be easily changed, but there isn't terribly much room to play with to show all of it.
  • Word count is now moved into the stats block and should be a much easier clickable target
  • The stats block is now made more prominent, and with that a return of the last reply information
  • The ignore button has been moved to the front, and the icon set to:
  • The "last post" button has been removed as it is redundant
  • The full description can now be viewed by clicking More instead of a hard truncated version
  • All reactions can be viewed instead of just the top 3 by clicking More
  • Latest threadmarks collapsing behavior has been overhauled and the New tag is added to indicate if any new threadmarks exist
  • Under preferences a new per-user option has been added:
    • Story/quest threads link to threadmarks page

Additionally "Stories" and "Quests" have been added to user profiles, which list all stories and "quests" the user has written.

Shout out to @Neablis's excellent Warhammer 40K quest:

Mature - Vox Vitae: Warhammer AI quest

An AI from the Dark Age of Technology reawakens and finds themself faced with a situation beyond their worst possible assumptions. That's you. Surprise! A lot happened while you were asleep. Cadia has fallen, and the Great Rift has divided the Galaxy in two. Humanity is lost and leaderless...

I like this a lot.

With this change, will the "My Original Quests" tab be going away? I'm not sure how much value there is in having separate major UI elements for "every quest" and "quests tagged only as Original" (though I am biased here since I have thus far not written a single fandom property thing on this site).

Yes, I've just trimmed the list of tabs and shortened the various names. It is now just "Quests", "Stories" and "Essays", which should be shorter UI wise.

Previously, it required a prefix so we used the "original" prefix but since that restriction was removed it doesn't make sense to specialise it like that.

The 'You are already watching this thread'-icon looks a bit awkward on mobile. At first glance it looks like it's just floating around unanchored. Making the icon big enough to fill its row or vertically centered might solve that.

Though I could kinda also see an argument for just removing that information from this view.

We finally have something we can link to as an author page? You mean I can finally shrink my signature down? This is great, thanks!

I've updated the URL so it includes the tab name in the url instead of just the ID, which will make bookmarking or linking to it a little nicer.

Yes it is a bit awkward, but there are a bunch of icons which can appear there.

While most only show for staff, it isn't just the 'watched thread' icon.

This looks good. I just would like to know how it looks on mobile with too many tags for one screen. Is it going to show me an expansion button for the rest of the tags or something else?

The thread list (mobile or desktop) will only show upto 6 tags, and how it picks which takes to show is based on category and if it is a synonym for another tag and a few other criteria. Adding a 'more' button could be done, but it hasn't been something I've thought about

Is there a way to set "latest threadmarks" to he automatically revealed?
+1, but I'm gonna spend some additional text explaining why.

It looks like the definition of "New" that triggers the tag on the threadmark expandable is literally "are there any threadmarks you haven't read yet", no matter how old those threadmarks are. This is useful for keeping up on stories you enjoy, but sort of overlaps with setting a Watch on threadmarks (the method I use for this purpose, FWIW).

In contrast, what I found useful about the visible "three most recent" threadmarks of the expanded list was being able to see the timestamps on those threadmarks, because it informed me at a glance whether a story I haven't read yet is actively updating. For that use case – unless there's another method to tell at-a-glance how recent the last few updates have been – having them expanded by default is a lot more useful than having to expand them one-by-one.

From the sounds of it, it would be an improvement if we stuck the newest threadmark date-time stamp in the "latest threadmarks" bar, something like this:

(This is a very quick html edit, it isn't remotely implemented)

It is the latest 3 threadmarks of any type which get put into "latest threadmarks" and if any of them is new; then the new tag is added to the collapsible bar

  • Fix some possible inefficient database usage when viewing the thread list with some complex filters
  • For collapsed "latest threadmarks" bar, display the newest threadmark date next to the 'new' symbol
    • Note; staff threadmarks do not count for "new" threadmarks
  • Remove the 80% font-size on stats headers to improve readability for a ~0.5 pixel total height change increase

Wait. Is this your stealth stories I am reading right now thread @Xon? On top of it being another updates thread I mean.

2025-04-18 - Update New
  • Enable collapsible sticky thread widget everywhere, not just user fiction/quests
  • Thread creator username and thread creation date now have the same font size as the thread statistics
  • The "Latest Threadmarks" bar
    • Gradient/Color has been adjusted to stand out less
    • Always shows the latest threadmark date even if no there are no new threadmarks
    • No longer hides the latest threadmark metadata when the latest threadmarks are shown

Additionally "Stories" and "Quests" have been added to user profiles, which list all stories and "quests" the user has written.

Nice update!

I checked my profile the other day and it only showed my ongoing quests. Is there also a way to get it to show completed quests?

Quests from the quests archive forum are now included.

The quests archive forum really isn't supposed to be for closed threads but a legacy forum that hasn't been gotten rid of as we didn't have the ability to mark story/quest as "complete".

I have the same complaint here that I do on SpaceBattles, whoever designed this feature gave no consideration to mobile users as this feature is incredibly mobile unfriendly.
