The world, so recently delivered from the madness and mass death of the Second World War, has been plunged into a global conflict between two great superpowers, who head each in their own manner an armed camp of allied nations and puppet states. In Washington D.C. they speak of the Free World standing against the threat of communism and dictatorship. In Moscow the bywords of Andrei Zhdanov hold fast, that the world is divided between the imperialistic forces of the United States and the democratic states led by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
This conflict is defined by the new nuclear age, inaugurated by the American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the final days of the War in the Pacific. At the same moment as the bombs were dropping on Japan, the Soviet Far Eastern Army was driving across Northern China and smashing the Japanese Kwantung Army to pieces. The war between the superpowers had the potential now of widespread and total calamity, the destruction of all life on Earth. Thus was established a period of shadow war, already termed the Cold War in the West.
In the new age of superpower rivalry the greatest tools in the hands of the Kremlin and the White House are not their armies, but spies, economic influence, and proxy wars. The Soviet atomic tests in the Kazakh SSR had given birth to a twilight struggle, a war of influence and mystery. For should that fail and the war go hot: Götterdämmerung, the Twilight of the Gods.
In Twilight Struggle you will take command of the government of a nation. You will have a great deal of authority in the culture and developments of your state, but ultimately the principles of historical plausibility and the rule of the GM will preside.
