You know, the best part of that is that it was Batman in disguise who was actually the one who said that.

Implying he also thought the Big Rock was pretty effective.

Alright so first question I need to ask

@Fabricati , what even IS a Beast. Torioi seems to know something about them, since she treats the existence of them as normal, but you've never really explained what they are, or at least what Mei knows about them.
Bluntly, Mei is assuming that whatever attacked Ichigo was some kind of wild animal, because it didn't look like a human could leave what looked like claw marks. I've been capitalizing it because it's been in the context of the Vow. It's the Beast, the one we're looking for, not a beast.

3rdCorinthian speculates about the wider political situation
Right okay then. Thanks for clearing that up. I think my confusion came from the fac that you've nigh religiously used the word beat inreference to it, so I couldn't tell if it was an animal or something more

So then, time to refresh what we know about the Beast.
-- fire? Chemical burns? Accident?
-- Rending cuts, parallel, about 2-4 cm apart, precision, but not as precision as a knife
-- if it was a beast, where were the bites?
-- bruises

With all this in mind, I'm going to plump for a Nekomata.

Our 'beast' is using claws (parallel implies the cuts are performed at the same time, 2-4 cm separation is enough for a claw-shaped hand's fingers, and it's not precise enough for it to be a weapon), doesn't like to use bites, and can utilise fire. Nekomata immediately comes to mind due to having a human like form (And as such being limited in biting) and being associated with the ability to utilise Supernatural fire.

Also, going to bring this up:
So this, too, was part of the Kaneko matriarch's plan? Or something that would jeopardize it?

But why would a Beast jeopardize Kaneko's plan?
I'm going to guess that there's 2 factions at play right now. The Kaneko's and their supporters, and those who don't want them to get our inheritance. This doesn't mean that they're on our side, just that they're against the Kaneko's.

We know the Matriarch was tempting some seriously heavy shit when she made her play at getting our Inheritance. Remember, even if the Kaneko matriarch thinks herself abovve such things, this act is meant to mean that there are consequences. The Consequences therefore might be that they're going to target Ichi with the intent to kill, especially if the Kaneko's are after our inheritance via marriage to them.

In which case, that would explain why they commanded us to protect him. Ichi has a target on his back and If it really is about the Inheritance, those individuals doing so might not be allowed to kill us, making us a better meatshield since they can't fight back as hard.

...Side note, but I'm wondering whether or not the other tragic destiny is that we've already lost some of our inheritance. I remember the scene where the Matriarch tried to make us claim it right there and then, and Mei reached out, so that might have affected whatever we were meant to get. I dunno, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a tragic destiny on the level of her current one that doesn't involve her inheritance somehow.

Confused, you looked back to Kazue, hesitated, then looked back at Iwai. The shame finally caught up, and you sat up ramrod straight. "Wait. What… What part of me wants my best friend to have been a girl?"

Iwai sighed the sigh of someone who knew when pain was going to come. "Torioi… I'm sure you'll figure it out. Sooner rather than later."
Oh. She hasn't realized yet. Oh.

"The Understacks reflect your state of mind, which includes your desires. Usually, mind you, they're not so blatant about it, especially not so close to the surface," Iwai continued. "But I suppose you truly are your parents' child."
"This isn't enough? Especially coming with me, you're going to bend the Understacks around you. It's in your nature.
… That's right. That's right, that's something important about the nature of the Understacks, something you forgot sometime between then and now. How well-hidden the Hearts of the Sites are, to anyone but you.
You have learned a piece of your destiny: "Potent Inheritance" (Heroic). Your parents were apparently very powerful in certain magics… and you have, for better or worse, carried on their talent.]
This is a collection of things that made me go "hmmm!". So here we go: hmmm! Our parents, our bloodline, seems to have some connection to and power over Sites. Maybe that's how we managed to just wander into the Understacks.

And then Kazue spoke up. "We'll be OK. Hey, grandma, we're going deeper into the stacks, right?"
Also hmmm! Iwai is Ichigo's grandmother? She seems to be setting herself against Ichigo's parents here, so it appears the family is not united on whatever they're doing to us.

Right okay then. Thanks for clearing that up. I think my confusion came from the fac that you've nigh religiously used the word beat inreference to it, so I couldn't tell if it was an animal or something more
I also appreciate the clarification. I couldn't tell if a Beast was just something you sometimes had to fight on Delves to reach your goal or if it was something more.

[BONUS] +1 to any roll, used as the winning readers like, for the identity of our Beast or Beasts, and why. The correct answer, and the best wrong answer, will both get this bonus.
Hmmm, best wrong answer you say?
-- fire? Chemical burns? Accident?
-- Rending cuts, parallel, about 2-4 cm apart, precision, but not as precision as a knife
-- if it was a beast, where were the bites?
-- bruises
Ichigo has gotten into some very heavy kink (flames, edgeplay with a claw instead of a knife, flogging) and is embarrassed to tell us about it. We should remind him that safewords exist for a reason!

[X] [APPROACH] You've got a knife, don't you?
[X] [FORM] You've got a knife, don't you!? Carve its lies out!

Nah, pretty sure that was meant to be Kazue being irreverent. Like calling someone gramps.

Anyway, I've been rereading - Remember when Ichigo said he felt like he was being watched during the tryouts for Judo Club?

Her parents spelled her name "Eight, gods" "Dance, cherry blossom"

She spells her name "Night-god" "Demon, center"

because of course she does.
Knew I saw a God and Demon thing in there somewhere! Good to know my horrifically less than bare basics knowledge of japanese from watching too much anime bullshit is paying off.

That being said that response also makes me feel like the Judo club is probably a red herring. Which is good because I like Mao and Hanabi

Either promises to be entertaining!

Looks like we're going HARD to start with, and the form of our trump card is likely set.

@The3rdCorinthian, @Nerdorama, you both have a +1 you can apply to any upcoming roll in the thread.

Update likely Tuesday, if not sooner.

1.6-- Extreme Calligraphy
You didn't even wait for the others before rushing in, knife in hand.

[The knife is a deadly weapon; you deal two harm with it. Strike on HARD 2+2+1 vs 7,5 weak hit. Do damage, lose initiative]

It was a good strike. You remember that much.

PROGRESS [⁑][][][][][][][][][]

But perhaps you were a little quick off the draw. The mass quickly absorbed the wound, eating it. It was little worse than when it started, blackened and undefined as ever.

Tendrils tipped with sharp points-- they flashed like pencils in the light!-- jabbed towards you, and like a fool, you dove forward. You hurt it once, surely you could again--

[Clash on HARD 6+2+1 vs 7,4 STRONG HIT, +1 harm, regain init]

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][X][][][][][][][]

One tendril sputtered and burned. Iwai was alongside you and she nodded behind her, where three other tendrils lay burning and hissing.

Were this something normal, surely it would have been dead by now. This… This definitely wasn't working. Since it still seemed focused on you, you led its focus away from the others and let them focus on it while you tried to think. Your brain was a buzzing haze of adrenaline and barely-contained frustration.

On the other side you caught glimpses of Kazue trying to dig through it with her bare hands. That's more than you were expecting from her-- but you thought you had a better idea.

You book it to the edge of the clearing, and the blob gives chase.

[Secure an Advantage 4+1+1 vs 8, 4 weak hit]

You're not faster enough to really get yourself going. Again you regret that you've been focusing more on power than absolute agility. Still, it got you on the team, so you suppose you can't complain.

The stack trembles for a moment, but holds. Unlike the blob, however, you have no such momentary goals. Kazue is right there with you, and together, the two of you put the shoulders on to the stacks. Sure, Iwai would probably kill you in a minute, but at least you'd live a minute longer.

[Strike, 1+2+1 vs 6, 10 MISS. Pay the Price. Kazue suffers 1 Harm! You suffer 4 Harm!]

Only for it all to fall apart miserably, as the memory blob squelches through the bookshelf and gets you and Kazue both. Gods, it burns.
[Endure Harm 1+2 vs 6, 6 MISS. -1 momentum.]

It burns a lot.

You've got to get out of here. You've got to--

[Face Danger, 4+2 vs 6, 3 STRONG HIT. +1 Momentum, regain initiative]

The stack starts to tip over on top of you and Kazue, and without thinking you slam your hands back on to the shelf. You wince as the burns on your arms and shoulders--

Arms and shoulders.

Wait a minute.

The stack teetered over on top of the blob. By this point you were well aware that wouldn't actually damage it, but if it slowed it down enough--

"Those weren't chemical burns," You spat, once you were free. "Ichigo's injuries had no discoloration like this. This was not how it happened!"

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][⁑][][][][][][][]

For a moment, the blob seems to retch and shift underneath the bookcase and eventually slithers out.

Fangs reached out to catch you, but Iwai seized the opportunity to distract it. "Whatever spell you're casting, keep going."

"And fangs? A long snout? No. You didn't land any bites at all. Your face… It wasn't like this at all, was it?"

Kazue looked at you, eyes full of fear. What was she afraid of? You didn't know, and at this point you couldn't afford to wait and listen to it.

And yet, the fangs on its face fell to the floor and burned with cuprous flame.

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][⁑][x][][][][][][]

More tendrils snake out, but you have already tired of its lies.

[Strike 4+2+1+1 vs 6, 8 strong hit]

Your knife flashes along with Iwai's, and the tendrils suddenly cauterize, the knife hot and steaming in your hand. "You were rending, not stabbing. In fact--"

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][][][][][]

"You weren't this big at all, were you!?" You attempted to drive the knife home, even though your hands feel like they're on fire--

[Strike on HARD 3+2+1 vs 5, 10 weak hit]

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][][][][]

The knife-- the holy, blessed knife, sheathed by ash and bathed in alcohol-- is snatched from your hands, still burning, still bright, but sucked deep into its body and irretrievable.

You refuse to let this deter you, but luckily, you don't have to. A blinding light fills the air, even as you shut your eyes tight and try to retrieve it anyway--

[Face Danger 2+3 vs 6, 1 weak hit. You take 1 Harm!]

Your hand burned, then felt like it was sinking into quickly solidifying flesh. You had to pull the blade forth, hard, cold and suddenly painful.

[Endure Harm 6+2 BURN 10 vs 7, 10 Strong Hit. Body 0, cannot shake it off. Momentum resets to 2. Momentum +1.]

But it was yours. Its attention was now fully on you. If it weren't for Kazue giving it a shoulder charge to knock it off balance, you probably would have been consumed by it. "Dammit, Torioi, run!"

"Absolutely not!" you shouted. You took another step forward, and drove the knife home, again, in what would be its center of mass. "You are not formless! All your rends were left on Ichigo's upper body! You're either bipedal, or used to using your forepaws! You're not a formless beast!"

The blob screams--

[CORRECT: NEKOMATA]

[TURN THE TIDE. Once per combat, you may summon up your courage for a last-ditch effort. If you do, seize the initiative from your opponent, take +1 on your next move, and gain +1 momentum on a hit. If you fail, take a dire outcome.]
[STRIKE: 4+2+1 vs 6, 2 STRONG HIT]

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][X][][]

"I will find the Beast stalking the University."
Difficulty: Formidable
TRACK [⁑] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
MENACE . . . . . . . . . .

"You are a nekomata!"

The blackness around the form and flesh shattered, falling in dozens of ruined pages. What remained after the swirl of wind and paper was something with a remarkable resemblance to a human woman, albeit… A bit fuzzier, and with six-- No, you decided not to look.

The cuprous flames of the blackened memories turn suddenly blue white and swirl in fox-fire around her. Her eyes are a felid green, with the vertical slit one might expect, and the telltale twin tails bristle behind her. Her ears are similarly feline, but sit where a human's ears would. Was she concealing that somehow?

She suddenly spared you a shocked glance. "Damn it, you shouldn't be here--" But now, her attention was all on Kazue.

She charged, and Kazue responded in kind, tossing her with a casual ease. While she twisted and landed on her feet, it's clear The Nekomata is not a member of the Judo Club-- There's no way she would be that easy to throw, even given how terrifying you two are. "Do it now!"

PROGRESS [⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑][⁑] [] []

[END THE FIGHT vs. 8 progress: 2, 1 STRONG HIT]

You nodded, and for some reason, the flow seemed… Perfect.

Natural.

Like you were doing exactly what you were supposed to be doing when you tossed the knife aside, pulled your fist back,

And delivered a ground-shattering blow to the back of the nekomata's neck, sending a column of light straight upwards, like you'd called down the lightning.

Gods.

Your hands were shaking. They-- they were bleeding, where you'd gripped the blade of the knife to try and get it out. Your breathing was heavy.

Unlike with Yagami-senpai… This was not a fun time. Maybe you were just too tired to feel anything at that moment. Maybe the adrenaline came down too fast. But all you felt was a little sick.

"Wh… What the hell was that?" Kazue said.

-- Kazue! You scrambled to your feet, or tried to, stumbling, reaching to look at the damage, which was--

Almost entirely superficial, to her jacket, and a scratch or two. "A-are you all right?" You asked, teeth buzzing, already trying to think of how to fix this, how to make it so that word wouldn't get back to Ichigo's parents.

"Enough. You're in no condition to worry about someone else, Torioi," Iwai said, having collected both knife and ashen scabbard. "... have to purify it again…"

[You are at Body 0. While in this state, Enduring Harm will reduce your Momentum, and you may be seriously injured or maimed.]

And that's when the previously ignored nekomata dissolved, and an answering light shot into you.

For a moment, everything went black with the pain.

[You take one Harm. you lose one Momentum.]

[Endure Harm 5+2 vs 1, 8. Weak hit. You press on…]

[You have uncovered an aspect of your Destiny: Shattered Spirit. Emanations of your power lie in Sites across the city. These Emanations will attempt to break you and take control of you, and are always an Extreme danger to you. Do not expect all of them to face you in stand-up combat like this, but know they are always hostile and do not have your best interests at heart. You mark XP.]

[If at any time you overcome this Aspect, you immediately qualify for the "Revenant" asset, even if you have not Faced Death.]

Your head slowly swam back to the surface, to find Kazue had caught you.

Kazue ran a hand through the top of your hair as she spoke. You felt your breathing calm, just a little. "I'm OK. But we need to get you out of here. Iwai, what's the fastest way to the surface?"

VOTE:

What is the fastest way back to the surface?
[] [ESCAPE] Just book it, kid!
[] [ESCAPE] We'll have to retrace our steps, back the way we came.

Pick your Poison: How does Mei deal with her injuries?
[] [WOUNDS] It might run dear on supplies, but we can probably afford to spend a little to make sure we're healthy.
[] [WOUNDS] It might be worth another trip to the clinic, but the doctor might start asking questions. Questions we can't afford to answer.

We're like super good with the stacks, right? Let's see if we can make that work for us.

And I like the idea of getting more of the people we know in on our bullshit.
