Tomb Raider

So apparently it wasn't bad... but it wasn't good either:

Seems like the first half captured the Tomb Raider reboot game perfectly but it kind of fell apart in the second half due to a typical, boring plot.

I watched some of MovieBob's review. To paraphrase what I remember, he said it was a good feature length live action Tomb Raider game trailer :p Or, it's the Kickstarter campaign video for the sequel.
Since I'm not really that into action for action's sake or 'hero gets beat up a lot but keeps going because Reasons' I think I won't bother going to this one.

As video game movies go, it was actually pretty good. It didn't blow me away like a typical Marvel movie does. But it was still an enjoyable way to kill 2 hours. It definitely felt like the reboot games, if abbreviated. 10-12 hour campaign compared to a 2 hour movie, you're going to lose some things.

I really liked Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.

Overall, good, though not great.

Saw this earlier today. Overall a pretty good movie. Alicia Vikander is perfect in the role, but the rest of the cast is clearly just there for the paycheck. It's pretty bog standard as action movies go, but it is a fun sort of bog standard. Given the clear set up for sequels I hope to see more Tomb Raider like stuff in the next one, maybe even having Sam show up at some point.

Its currently holding at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, which nevertheless makes it the best-rated videogame adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes by a margin of 14 points. Its 4th on Metacritic behind Mortal Kombat, Prince of Persia, and one of the Resident Evil movies, and only slightly ahead of the previous Tomb Raider movie. I've heard it been described as "a movie that happened" by reviewers and essentially the most generic action movie to generically generic.

But hey we're closing in! Some day there might actually be a videogame adaptation to get rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The fact that most of the Resident Evil movies aren't in the high 80s on RT can only be due to a massive conspiracy.

I still say that Prince of Persia was good. It was a dumb silly action movie but it showed an understanding of the source material as well as a good sense for how to distill it into a movie.

So we've had some gaming inspired films.

Ready Player One has explicit game themes.
As did Wreck it Ralph.
Jumanji the 2017 is as well, and the original one has board game inspirations.

Edge of Tomorrow. I've seen some compare to respawns.

I found the hits Lara Croft takes interesting in this film. That's different then many action heroes, then extent of damage she takes. It did make me a little uncomfortable at times but the differing framing I found interesting.

It is faithful to the 2013 Tomb Raider game. That had some very disturbing scenes of Lara taking hits, as well as some death and torture scenes that were very brutal.
They toned it down a lot in the sequel game.
Cutscene videos of the 2013 game on youtube lead to death scene compilations, some in other languages with tags like リョナ and ソフトリョナ and エログロ which google translate says is soft ryona and ero guro. Not helpful since they aren't really English words and instead phonetic transliterations, but searching those words reveal more, which is apparently some sort of BDSM sadism type fetishism except cranked up even more?
It seems a little unsettling for me, even if its just to a fictional character, but I suppose in most cases is maybe harmless enough and not a sign of bad influence.

I liked the film overall, but had some issues.
I disliked how Lara lost some agency near the middle and end imo.
During these sections she's less of a main character and more of a viewpoint character. Sure she is still on screen, and has a lot of screentime. But often times just acts as a camera person, where things happen around her, but her just observing. Or sometimes just things happening to her. I expected something like an action or survival film like The Revenant or Die Hard. Things happen to her and she gets through rough spots, but she powers on despite this a little more.

Saw this film with my sister Friday.

It wasn't the worst movie we'd been to, but it's not exactly going in my top 10 either. It seems like they tried to mash together the plots of the 2013 game and its sequel. The resulting mix is just. . . okay at best.
