...there seems to be an assumption that not inserting yourself between a doomed person and their doom is something that makes you a scumbag.
I would point out that we have already left people to die as we dodged their grasping arms while they were pleading for help from inside their cars.
Spreading yourself too thin by trying to help everyone risks pointless death and abandoning those that you reasonably could have helped.
Not saying that this is the case here, since there is an argument to be made about strength in numbers (though numbers alone are only good for presenting juicier targets), but it's something that is useful to keep in mind going forward.
Edit: if the mechanics remain the way they are, then avoiding rolls by making human sacrifices compromises would be generally pointless, as there would always be a next roll eventually, and there is only so much you can compromise on. Still, if our character were to die, I'd like the cause to be a better one than "an idealism incompatible with living".
