I'm hoping he actually knows his way around a boat and can teach us.
In a zombie apocalypse having a boat as your home base is one of the better options in my opinion.
Of course if we don't get a boat it would be a huge waste of time and could result in something happening to our family before we get there.

A boat would be an order of magnitude faster than travelling on foot.

So even if we don't find one, the lost time is negligible.

It is absolutely worth it to try to find one for a while.

On top on that it would be so much safer to travel at sea than on land.

I think the boat is for river sailing, which is both harder and slower than sea travel, especiall since you don't go in a direct fashion, but following the natural paths. Though it is faster than travelling on foot, surely.
