The War for Eden The War for Eden [A Reds! ISOT map game]

Oops I gave Zanzibar to Madagascar the first time but forgot when I did the redo! Maybe not actually, it looks like you can't get Zanzibar without the associated mainland province in the map thing.

Year 2: Red Tide Rising

The United Republics frenetically prepared for war with the CSA. New fortifications popped up overnight like mushrooms in the inter-American border and new divisions are raised from the reserves, with Proletarian Guards at the ready in the event of a CSA invasion. But the UASR are not simply waiting for the Confederates to come at them. The Main Reconnaissance Directorate infiltrated the border states of the CSA, and armed the Black population against the genocide. The CS Navy is also no match for the WFRN, not having a single carrier at their disposal and only relying on their submarine arm. The main concern is that without a major threat against the Fascists in Europe besides the Union of Britain, the Kriegsmarine and Regia Marina would be free to sail to the Atlantic, though the WFRN would have the home turf advantage.

It was fortunate then, that most of the other countries that are transported to this new Eden are aligned to socialism in some ways. Colombia under the red banner is a welcome asset as they helped defend Nicaragua and Panama AURs, the existence of a revolutionary Britain is welcomed despite their trade union consciousness and the distaste remaining bourgeois Labour politicians for American Maximists. Communications from Madagascar are rather spotty, though a decent idea of their government has formed by the middle of the year, transportation remains difficult. The enigmatic Caribbean Futurists are rather… odd for the men of the Reed Government to deal with, but there are understanding that they would be a co-belligerent against the CSA. The Vladivostok Compact is refounded with Colombia as a member, and Britain and Madagascar as observers. The industrial might of the United Republics will remain, as ever as the Arsenal of Socialism, with Colombia and Madagascar, and to some extent the Caribbean Futuriste receiving aid.

On a lighter note, various Ice Age megafauna are now declared protected by the Reed Government, with People's Secretary for Agriculture Henry Wallace posing with a mammoth becoming a popular photograph. Most of them are in national parks and zoos, with the People's Secretariat of Agriculture beginning research into farming for Ice Age megafaunas.

Operation Boa
Operation Boa

The death of a high profile Freedom Party member in Confederate Cuba sparks a series of violent crackdowns. Despite the best efforts of the state it becomes an open secret that he perished from a drug overdose. Heroin use has become rampant among the party Stalwarts, especially those stationed at the various prison camps. Featherston has personally taken an interest in the efforts to 'clean house' as well as tracking down the source of the narcotics.

What soon follows is the very public arrest of several Carribean Futuriste citizens working with local resistance groups to import copious amounts of narcotics to Cuba. An outraged Jake Featherston reveals this to the public in speech. He announces that the Confederate Navy will be deployed to contain the 'drugs and degenerates'. In cooperation with the once defunct French consulate, the Confederate States issues an ultimatum to the Futurists demanding capitulation to the Pact of Steel and the installment of a 'proper government'.

The world watches with baited breathe for what comes next while scientists and amateur radio enthusiasts alike note a spike in strange signals and garbled transmissions...

AN: Will Featherston's War on Drugs turn into a world war? Also will new contenders be brought to the New Eden?

I mean, I was thinking of yoinking something over in japan myself...will that conflict with you Eco?

The Boa Reaction

The UoB navy would move to interdict the Confederacie's navy, and publically denounce it's "Imperialistic aggression" against the Carribean nation. Some marine units would even be offered to act as a garrison, and to help train up some units for what the planners are thinking is going to be a full on war.

Profiteering

All eyes were on the Carribbean, on what seemed like the inevitable conflict between the Confederacy and the Vladivostok compact. All eyes but the Greeks'. Instead they were looking towards the market. Whilst Germany and Italy both had unwavering faith in their far-flung ally, they still expected to lose access to a number of luxury crops for a year or two whilst the mobilised armies of the South were fighting rather than working. Consequently the prices of those goods shot up, and Greece was uniquely situated to take advantage.

A new wave of migrants looking to get rich quick came to settle the Anatolian frontier, and with the increased price of tobacco Greece was able to make a lot of progress towards paying off its debts to Germany.

Full Combat Readiness

In conjunction with the Republican Navy vessels in Mexico, the WFRN Atlantic Fleet made a demonstration of threatening to blockade Southern ports to intimidate the CS Navy. Forces defending the Panama and Nicaragua canals are also at the ready.

Behold, A Pale Horse: Boris Savinkov's Russian State

The third year brought yet another new country to the formerly unspoiled Eden; the Russian State, born from the humiliation of defeat in the First Weltkrieg. With the National People's Republican Party under Boris Savinkov ruling Russia unopposed since the death of SR leader Viktor Chernov, Savinkov has used the chaos from the transplantation into the new world to solidify his rule from his remaining political opponents and nationalizing German businesses that remained in Russia.

Electronic signals has confirmed that Germany and Italy exists, however the contact between Germany and Russia would yield nothing positive. Both are fascist and national populist dictatorships yes, but Hitler's racial rhetoric for Lebensraum and Savinkov's desire to avenge the Russians' loss to the Teutons would never reconcile, even as transmissions confirmed that a Red America lies beyond the Atlantic. Russia thus raced to colonize what was Ukraine and Belarus, before the Germans can lay their grubby paws on it. Millions of unemployed men are mobilized in crash-industrialization programs and the colonization of virgin lands, so that the Russian state would be ready for the clash between the two titans of Europe. The only semi-positive relations the Russians have are with Greece, as despite the monarchism both are wary of the Germans and Italians, and the Greeks are thankful for a traditional Orthodox protector.

Caribbean Futuriste Responds to Boa: Oops

It goes without saying that Légitime Défense were surprised at the results of their war plan. The issue, they surmised, was that it worked too well too quickly: heroin was fundamentally a drug for the people that wanted to escape their life and misery, so they had assumed that heroin would flood the lower ranks of the garrisons whilst leaving the upper ranks oblivious until it was too late to properly uproot. They hadn't expected high ranking party members to start dropping dead of overdoses. The centre were genuinely confused: what kind of a government were these Confederates running? Why would high ranking party members, surely living in the lap of luxury, want to escape the world they were in? Was there maybe some action they were taking that only the soothing song of the opium poppy could help them forget?

It goes without saying that they couldn't agree to Featherstone's ultimatum. Even if they wanted to, it would just have had the ruling centrists unseated by a government who'd say no. On their left wing, the Surrealist/Escadron factions disdained the Confederacy as a barbaric example of an old world that needed to be destroyed and would rather die than surrender their freedoms. On their right wing, the militarised futurists were eager for a war. They had expanded rapidly with the alliance with Colombia and aid from the UASR, ballooning with the Caribbean's military, and they looked at the CSA as weak target. Featherstone, they argued, had bitten off more than he could chew. The CSA were surrounded by enemies, 2 of whom had mobilised for war before their arrival into this new world, lacked the industrial or military capacities of their northern neighbour, and the sheer speed at which heroin had spread demonstrated that they didn't even have their domestic front anywhere near in order to successfully run a war. Meanwhile, their only allies were an ocean away and neither of them were particularly potent as naval powers.

As such, if the militarised futurists had their way they'd have been sending their own ultimatum to the CSA, but for better or for worse the centrists were still nominally calling the shots. Their initial response was: delay, delay, delay; whilst eagerly accepting assistance from the Union of Britain and welcoming the presence of their marines, confirming with the UASR and Colombia that they'd be co-belligerents against the CSA if it came to it, and bringing in conscription and a propaganda campaign to prepare the population for total war against Featherstone empire. They knew that Featherstone wouldn't accept their delays for long, but they hoped to call in help from their allies and move to a war footing in the time they could get.

La Reorganización

The Revolution continues in Colombia! With the most immediate matters sorted the country votes to officially rename itself to the Union of Bolivaran Socialist Republics. This leads to many private jokes about the UBSR being the "Plan B" to the UASR and the unofficial names of "Gran Colombia" or just "Colombia". The country adopts a federal model based on the UASR with six "Integral Republics": Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. Furthermore four ASSRs, Amazonia, Guainia, Vaupes, and Vichada, are created for the purpose of diplomacy and negotiation with the indigenous people living in the country's interior. Most of these Republics existed solely on paper for now but their early foundation meant that there would not need to be any major re-organisations in the future.

As part of its expansion plans the country passed a ban on unplanned border settlements. "Frontierism" was declared a wasteful and unproductive endeavour compared to planned city expansions. In accordance with this, shipyards were established at Maracaibo, Caracas, and a naval base was built at the site of Willemstad, renamed Curaҫao Naval Base. It was not expected that these shipyards would be able to produce new ships, but instead be used for repairs, salvage, and scrapping to save resources wherever possible. Further expansions to re-activate Chilean mines were planned, but industrial investment from the UoB or UASR would be required as Colombia did not have the capacity to build the equipment itself in a reasonable timeframe.

Meanwhile, even with the re-forging of VOSCOM with the UASR, the VOSCOM delegation transported with Colombia decides to retain its current structure due to a shared language and now-integrated command structure. To clear up confusion, the Colombian VOSCOM delegation renames itself as the Andean Red Army, after the Andean Pact organised to contain Brazil in the old world. Meanwhile the Colombian Navy and Airforce choose to retain their previous names due to a much smaller foreign presence within them (and their much smaller size). The crew of Fields of Athenry are allowed to go home to the UASR but Colombia purchases the ship itself as it had captured the popular imagination after its exploratory voyage across the new world.

The final, and often-overlooked piece of legislation passed was the innocennt sounding "Industrial Salvage Act". With this the UBSR gave itself a legal right to take and retain industrial equipment of any kind captured from "an enemy". This act neither defined what "equipment" nor "an enemy" might be but passed with little opposition.

Operation Alligator

After hearing Featherstone's speech, the Presidium of the Union of Bolivaran Socialist Republics released the following message in Spanish, English, French, and Cree:
Harken! The Union of Bolivarian Socialist Republics (UBSR) hereby refutes the demands of the illegitimate occupation forces in the southern UASR. The Caribbean government is under the aegis of the Vladivostok Compact and has no need to submit to any demands made. Additionally, the UBSR demands the illegitimate forces surrender immediately and submit themselves to trial for their flagrant crimes against humanity, namely the barbaric act of slavery.

To the workers of the Confederacy, rise up! You have nothing to lose but your chains and a world to win! The whole Americas are armed and will fight with you to win your freedom from slavery, from racism, from landlords, from capitalism. There is no fortress that the Bolsheviks cannot storm!

As these announcements were made an attack plan was drawn up. Audacious almost to the point of insanity, 100,000 troops would be launched from UoB Mexico to invade all along the southern coastline of Cuba. From there the forces would converge on Havana. With Cuba seized, Colombia would launch an assault towards New Orleans where they would "grip and hold" the mouth of the Mississippi river whilst the UASR pushed down from the north, cutting the country in two. Additional diversionary attacks would be launched at Florida and Baja California as necessary to keep Confederate forces spread out and unable to focus on any one front. This plan was codenamed Alligator, and Colombia held it ready for tensions to kick off.

The only problem was that the UBSR had neither the naval capacity or even the bullets to pull off this plan alone, and would require significant naval and logistical support from the other members of VOSCOM to pull it off.

The Miracle on the Volga (Greece)

"Thank god, someone we don't owe money to!" - Anonymous member of the Greek Parliament

Apprehension was in the air when a mysterious electrical signal was detected from the direction of Crimea. Expecting the Soviet Union, a nervous envoy was sent to make contact. However, what they found was a different beast entirely. The Russian State was an anti-German but most definitely modern, industrialised, and right-wing state. Even better, it was willing to form ties with Greece.

When he heard the news, Regent Kondylis travelled to Moscow personally to meet the new arrivals. Unfortunately this led to an awkward moment when the Russians delegation almost didn't believe his identity. As it turned out, the Russians were from a different timeline entirely where the Central Powers had won WW1. The strange British Communists were also apparently from this timeline. And in that timeline Kondylis was dead.

Once the misconception was cleared up however negotiations went swimmingly, with Greece selling tobacco and other heat-sensitive crops to Russia in exchange for machinery and technical expertise. Unofficially Greece also offered a back door into the Axis economy for the Russians to procure anything they needed.

Blackbeard, The Boa Constricts, & Backroom Dealings
Operation Blackbeard

The tense but quiet chill of an autumn night would be pierced the sounds of air sirens as the Confederate Air Force launches a series bombing runs on Debs-DeLeon, Metropolis, and parts of the mid-west. These strikes would be followed up a full mechanized thrust into the heartland of the UASR. For Jake Featherston, finding himself increasingly encircled by 'reds and degenerates' as he saw it this was the only way forward. Roll the dice and secure the CSA's status as the dominant hegemon of the continent or face destruction at the hands of his enemies. Only afterwards does Public Safety receive warning of the impending attack. It would seem that some agents of the otherworld's United States are attempting to establish contact with the UASR out of a sense patriotism.

The Boa Constricts

Simultaneously with the launching of Operation Blackbeard the Confederate Navy and Air Force likewise attempt to launch attacks on the Carribean Futurists and the UoB's Mexican outpost. Luckily resistance groups in Cuba are able to transmit a warning of the attack allowing defenses to be scrambled to brunt the damage.

Backroom Dealings

Italy, through Greece, sends an envoy to Savinkov's government with the following offer:

  1. Membership in the Pact of Steel and joining the war on 'Godless Bolshevism' in exchange for opening of trade relations.
  2. Support for the invasion of the Alaskan SR in order to open a second front with the UASR.
  3. The promise to help smooth over any potential disputes between Russia and Germany regarding Eastern Europe
  4. Ground and naval support for an eventual invasion of Britain.

The Alligator Strikes From Below

Colombia scrambles its navy and air force to contest the Southern Carribbean. The first stage of Operation Alligator, the invasion of Cuba, should begin as soon as practical. Crowds gather, fly flags, and sing songs as the ships leave port. It isn't against the enemy they expected, but the final conflict against reaction in the Americas is finally here!

Perfidious Hellas

Prime Minister Tsaldaris as the highest member of the pro-Italy faction is chosen as the best representative of Italy's message to Russia. Whilst he conveys the terms of the message honestly and faithfully, he phrases the offer as a demand rather than a request, as a subtle and deniable sabotage. If the Russians accept, that will bolster his personal prestige, if they refuse Greece gets to continue exploiting its position as a middleman.

(Rollin a die...9 on a ten sided die...preparations for the Union woulda been only days off)

Preparations for the war were only days from being fully completed when the CSA attacked, leading to an almost immediate sorting of the Union navy and airforce, though only when the Confederate planes were already in the air. With the marine and army divisions seconded for the invasions and raids only just being loaded onto transports, those would still be a few days off, but with the carrier dedicated to the Caribbean, and the massive amount of Union heavy vessels in the area, they would focus on hunting down and destroying as much Confederate tonnage as they could. As news of the war breaking out reaches the home isles, the home fleet is placed on high alert for german and italian intervention.

Outbreak of War, Caribbean Futuriste

It's finally happened. The warning from the Cuban resistance groups came just in time for the government to scramble a reaction together. The Militarised Futurists in the military, recognising that a proper naval fleet would take too long to build and would of limited use in the Caribbean with land so close by, had primarily used the military aid from the UASR to improve their air force (with a little more going towards small cargo submarines to aid with their war plan) but if the full brunt of the CSA's air force and navy were brought down upon it everyone knew it wouldn't be enough, and with the CSA distracted it was touch and go at best.

Calculating that Featherstone's decision to attack in every direction at once would be his undoing, the Caribbean military went with a defensive strategy: turning their islands into fortresses with the intent to make any Confederate invaders bleed for inch they take whilst the Caribbean air force tried to conserve it's manpower in between intercepting Confederate bombers and ambushing poorly defended Confederate ships. Given the weakness displayed by the CSA acting like a cornered, wounded animal with minimal provocation, the Militarised Futurists came to the conclusion that war plan Q3-Deux Nuds (or 'the heroin plan' as it was informally known) was in fact a glorious success: ordering the expansion of heroin production and planning on using their cargo submarines to keep smuggling in weapons and heroin to the Cuban resistance groups.

The centrists however, had spotted a different opportunity. From their Vladivostok allies, they had learned of the appearance of a Reactionary Russia that had interestingly not joined with the fascists. Given that Caribbean Futuriste was less wedded to socialism than the communists and syndicalists (and with Caribbean Futuriste eager to prove their worth), the centrists suggested that diplomats from Caribbean Futuriste (sent to Russia via Alaska and the Pacific) could act as a go-between to allow a line of communication between the Russians and communists.

Outbreak of War, Republic of Madagascar

Madagascar, meanwhile, was in a curious position. It was an observer in the Vladivostok Compact rather than a full member; and in spite of best efforts communication efforts with the main hubs of socialism in the Atlantic were still spotty. As a result, they had a calm before the storm with war not yet breaking out and the pact of steel distracted by events in the Caribbean. When news came about the outbreak of war, Madagascar didn't officially declare war but did whatever it could to ramp up support for the resistance groups in Italy's horn of Africa, extensively drilling it's military in the hopes of rapidly knocking the Italians out of the horn of Africa once the resistance groups were ready to emerge.

Hold the Fort

While the Revolutionary Military Council did not expect the war to come so soon, believing Featherston was bluffing, the divisions and militia by the border with the CSA fought hard against the Confederate thrust. The WFRN Atlantic Fleet was then ordered to launch a full blockade of Confederate ports and MRD operatives raised hell on the Southern countryside. With this being a war of annihilation, the full might of American industry was unleashed. Generals such as (Reds) Patton, Eisenhower, Haywood and Tukhachevsky (stranded in the UASR) would quickly plan a counteroffensive to knock the CS Army out which they believe is overextending themselves, in coordination with Colombian Operation Alligator.

The Devil You Don't Know

Savinkov mulls the Italian request. While it is good that trade can be openly done with the Pact of Steel countries which are more advanced than Russia, the demands seem to send Russian manpower for no good cause since the Russian navy couldn't stand a chance against the Americans or British. And there is no guarantee that Germany would walk back on its word once Russia is weakened by the war. The Russian counteroffer is thus to cede RK Ostland to Russia and turn G.G. Polen into a joint protectorate of Germany and Russia.

The Pact-VOSCOM War
The Pact-VOSCOM War

With the outbreak of war between it's American ally and the hated Socialist powers both Germany and Italy knew the time to act had come. If the Confederacy fell there would be no counter-balance to the UASR and it's allies across the Atlantic. So the two nations joined the war deploying their naval assets to harass shipping and military vessels. The Luftwaffe was ordered to begin bombing the Union of Britain while a land invasion of the settlements in northern France carried out.

In Italian East Africa, already encountering dificulties due to distance from the metropole, resistance groups begin to feel emboldened by news of the war. Another complication would arise regarding Italy's efforts at backdoor diplomacy. Germany found any territorial consession to Russia unacceptable, not mention many still held onto dreams of Lebensbraum in the east. It was, very privately, acknowledged that trade at least would be beneficial with the outbreak of hostilities to west.

Germany and Italy formally reject the territorial demads from Savinkov but do reiterate their openess to formal trade. In paticular is interest allowing some manufacturing to be relocated to Russia and thus out of range of VOSCOM bombers. Back across the Atlantic the CSA finds it's offensive being brunted by the UASR, leading some to fear that the goal of reaching the Great Lakes before winter won't be achieved. In the face of this and black unrest Featherston orders an accelleration of population reductions. The morality and potential longterm labor problems of this course of action are lost on him and his syncophants.

As the first snows begin to fall in the northern hemisphere it becomes clear this will be a red winter...

Siege of Little Paris
Siege of "Little Paris"

November 17th, 1 AE, Union colonial town "Little Paris"
Eastern curtain wall, gun bunker 7

The cacophony of battle filled his ears, to the point where he couldn't even hear the ringing. Furiously shoving a new shell into the gun breach and turning to grab a new one in his wrapped hands, sweat flowing off him much like the rest of the gun crew. The gun was firing as fast as they could work it, to the point where the fan set in the roof was struggling to extract the fumes that entered the room when the fired shells were extracted. Going so fast that his hands, wrapped in what used to be his shirt, were stinging and starting to burn from the heat coming off the breach. The gunner and another loader heaved against the cranks to either side of the gun, manually turning and adjusting it, a hit to the outside having shaken loose the electric traverse leaving the manual traverse system as the only one to adjust the gun.

The overhead light flickers as from atop the fortress wall circling the colonial town, a double barreled turret, using 8 inch naval guns meant for a cruiser, sends a pair of HE shells at a collection of german infantry trying to approach through the minefield. The survivors being gunned down as they lifted themselves dazed from the gun, the numerous machine guns of the wall and the rifles poking through firing slots, from trained riflemen, hunters using their hunting rifles, to volunteers from the populace using what rifles they could get their hands on.

An alert from one such firing slot heads down, to the base of the curtain wall to a man behind a pintle mount. Glaring through the thin slit at a small group of german pioneers with demolition charges, the unknown union soldier depresses two buttons, causing a rushing roar of flames to shoot out and cover the pioneers. A boon from the oil flowing in from the mexican colony, there was dozens of flamethrower mounts along each side of the curtain wall, keeping any pioneers away from the base.

From the river comes more shellfire, from a light cruiser. Having escorted a trio of cargo vessels up the river, which were even now being offloaded by dock crews, walking wounded, and civilian volunteers. Boxes of shells and rounds were offloaded and sent towards the fighting positions, ever hungry for more ammo. With its charges safe in the river port, the cruiser would sail slowly up and down the river, propelling rounds from its main guns, secondaries, even its AA guns firing upon the attackers. Even spare crew, with nothing else to do, grabbing the rifles from the ships armoury and taking shots at the enemy from the deck of the ship.

High above, the air war raged. Though outnumbered by Axis craft, the Union's fighter arm fought like a cornered dog. Flying in from southern england, air bases along the coast, and even from the sole Union carrier in the channel, they would fight and fight hard.

And within the untamed woods, roads barely razed through them, small groups of hunters and commandos ambushed convoys and camps, hitting and fading to drain the enemy more and more. And where they found a larger concentration of enemies, the Union's few tanks would come roaring out from their hiding places, slamming into tired, exhausted german troops.

Little Paris, right where its namesake was in the old world, was under siege. But it was not falling so easily. Neither was any of the other finished town fortresses. The union was on the defensive, and its leaders knew it could not go man to man with the Axis powers…but it would make them bleed, and make them expend as much material and manpower as it could.

Look West

With the declaration of war between the Pact and the west, Greece had to choose its position. Once again the fault line in the monarchist party was strained, with Prime Minister Tsaldaris wanting to join and support Italy in its war effort on principle. He believed that joining the war effort would help deepen ties with the larger country and lead to more support for his preferred candidate of Victor Emmanuel. Consequently, Regent Kondylis took the position that there was no need to go to war. Greece's small navy was in no position to contest Britain or America. Furthermore if the army was away in France then that would leave the country undefended against Italian invasion.

After a fierce debate in parliament the Prime Minister eventually got his way, as his militarist rhetoric was far more convincing to compared to the Regent's pacifism. Greece declared war on the Caribbean Futuriste and submitted a request to be considered an official member of the Pact of Steel. This was largely a formality however, as nobody had any real expectation that Greece would be a major part of the war effort. Instead, the 2000 Greek troops donated to the war effort would largely be used for garrisoning captured territory, with a handful of attaches being sent to support Italian officers in the field and learn how modern war was fought.

Spartan Rangers

With the Prime Minister's victory in parliament, Regent Kondylis became concerned about the loyalty of the army. Many of the fifth monarchists who had propelled him to power were officers, and his campaigning against the war had cooled their support for him. Now that war had been declared he would pivot to more hawkish positions, but he would also seek to expand his support base elsewhere.

As the Greek state had been relatively light-handed with the Anatolian frontier so far, paramilitary patrols had sprung up. These patrols were little better than bandits, grouping together to scrap over the best land and resources. They also tended to push the most "undesirable" settlers further and further east as the bow of the wave of colonialism. Kondylis and his supporters went to these groups as a recruiting ground for the strongest and meanest for the basis of a new prestigious paramilitary. Brokering not a peace, but a "rules of war" for the gangs, he inducted the most promising candidates into his new "Spartan Rangers". These rangers would receive special forces training and high-quality equipment to keep the other gangs in line and would swear an oath of loyalty to the regent himself.

This wasn't to be their only task however. As part of their training, squads of Rangers would be sent out into the wilderness of Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania to explore and map the unclaimed territories. They were given minimal rations and tools to accomplish this, with the idea that the wildlife would weed out the weak and unworthy. These maps could then be sold on to the Italians and Germans, suitably doctored so as to hinder any attempts to invade Greece this way.

The New Industrial Strategy

Upon learning of the Pact offer to the Russians, Greece put in its own bid for industrial relocation. This was a rare opportunity which both factions were fully in agreement of. In the Eastern Mediterranean Greece was well outside the reach of Allied bombers, and it was in a good position to ship weapons to both Germany and Italy. Futhermore the steady flow of immigrants and refugees from Germany, Italy, and Russia provided a manpower surplus that could be used to re-open the chromium mines in Basra and Izmit. This metal was vital for producing the armour for heavy ships capable of transatlantic warfare. On top of that, Greek manufacturing would mean that Albanian and Greek iron and coal could be processed far more locally, saving costs compared to shipping the raw ore to Italy.

Of course this offer was not made without Greek self-interest in mind. The Prime Minister wanted to make Greece "The Workshop of the Mediterranean" to increase national prestige. Meanwhile the Regent calculated that if Greece held Italian weapons manufacturing hostage they could perhaps be deterred from invasion, at least for a few more years.

New Arrival in The Middle East

The Socialist Commonwealth of Palestine led by Albert Einstein arrived on this new world on the 7th of October, 1 AE. The Palestinians panicked at first with the disappearance of neighbouring nations, this sense of panic would be replaced with relieve as they receive radio waves from other nations, only for the radio waves to cause concern as they find out about the existence of Hitler's Germany, Tsaldaris' Greece and Mussolini's Italy. The military was put on high alert in case of their new neighbours in the Mediterranean getting any funny ideas.

Even though relations with VOSKOM are established there is still a sense of fear and uneasiness. Palestine is alone and surrounded by reactionary powers in the Mediterranean with the nearest fellow Socialist state being Madagascar. Only time will tell the fate of Palestine.

Salvation in the holy land

On the 7th October Markos Vafiadis' radio picked up a new station. Unbelievably, there was someone speaking Yiddish! News quickly filtered out amongst the left-wing exiles in the Mediterranean and they started migrating eastward. Still travelling in small groups, they paddled under darkness until they reached Cyprus.

It was there for the first time that the full cohort assembled, with only a few exemptions of people left behind to keep watch for Italian or Greek movements. They came together to plan, and by majority consensus decided to send an emissary to Palestine. Their offer was as follows.

  • They would settle Cyprus and declare it Palestinian territory
  • In exchange Palestine would recognise them as legitimate Greek and Italian governments in exile and provide arms and supplies to eventually retake their homelands.

A Deal With The Exiles

Palestine would agree to this offer on the condition that they won't assist in clashes with Italian and Greek forces unless they directly threaten Palestinian territory to which the exiles reluctantly accepted. Some criticized this move on the basis that they aren't doing all they can to assist the liberation of Italy and Greece from reaction but others would defend this on the basis that Palestine is isolated from their fellow socialist states.

Regardless, settlements and military outposts are set up on Cyprus with the military outposts acting as the first line of defense in case of Italian and/or Greek naval and air attacks. The infrastructure on Cyprus is quite underdeveloped at the moment with the very little roads there are being dirt and gravel roads as well as settlements having little access to electricity. But there are plans to construct more infrastructure on the island thanks to the existence of valuable minerals such as copper and gold.

As for weapons and supplies, Palestine is supplying the exiles with the supplies they received from Spartacist Germany back in their old world. Hoping to sow some confusion between the Steel Pact members as whatever captured German equipment the exiles have resemble that of Spartacist Germany's and also because it would be absolutely hilarious to cause internal divisions between Steel Pact members regardless of how insignificant and short lived it would be.
