Who knows how the minds of politicians work?No I got what you ment just fine. My point being what would compel the anti aid faction to agree with annexing Japan?
That said, the two proposals aren't mutually exclusive with the proper mental gymnastics. "Japan doesn't deserve that much help because they aren't Americans. But, if they do become Americans, then they *will* deserve that kind of help!"
Then, there's the guys who don't think things through, or don't consider that approving annexation would also entitle Japan to disaster aid. "They want to be Americans? Yeah! Let's do it! I mean, who wouldn't want to be American?"
Then you got the Warhawks. Some of them might oppose giving aid to Japan on the grounds that resources given to Japan are resources that can't be given to American GIs, but would support annexing Japan on the grounds that it gives America a staging ground in the far east, as well as a legitimate excuse to build up military forces to pressure the Soviets.
And of course, you can't discount the guy who flips from anti-aid to pro-annexation simply because a specific politician they don't like was pro-aid but anti-annexation. Spite is a surprisingly powerful motivator.
But, like I said, who knows how the minds of politicians work? They're like labyrinths in there.
