The Unanchored City - A Mystery-Solving Communication Quest

Towards a Corpse of Sorts (Part 1)
[X] Follow Fields for now.
-[X] Ask him how well he know's you, do you have an reputation as an investogtor?
I'll follow Fields. And figuring out what my reputation is is a good idea, though I'll try to be a bit subtle about it...
[X] Fish here again. As far as things I want to know - what is a normal day like? Who holds power over this place? What do you value? Okay, now for advice on your current situations:
-[X] I'm pretty sure that we've exhausted this line of conversation. Time to go see the body. Also, don't ask about your reputation. Good grief, GAWR. Don't needlessly draw suspicion. At best we have an ego.
-[X] "I make no promises as to my usefulness in investigating this. It's the first time I've been involved in something of this caliber, to my recollecton. But I shall do as best I can." Steel yourself, John Doe, because this wild ride we're on is just beginning. ...Actually, do you have a gender?
Hello once more, Entity Fish! Alright, uh...

I've got no clue what a normal day in my life would be like? As for others, I would imagine it depends on their profession or allegiance, which can vary wildly from person to person. It's relatively safe, I'd say? Most factions have a very vested interest in keeping the peace.

As for who holds power? Well, every few blocks, there's different factions holding sway. Minor gods, cults, community associations, Republican outposts, Nationalist block-states, Unionist communes...take your pick. Major players, though...the obvious one is Empire. I've got some of their coinage, as you've seen earlier. It's accepted in most places, because they're one of the more stable, and larger polities, and they back their coin with blood, so it's got a nice fixed value. They're basically the remnants of loyalist Empire forces who held onto parts of the city post-Unanchoring, and over the past few centuries, have slowly been trying to re-establish the Empire as best they can. I think they've got some kind of idea in their heads in regards to Re-Anchoring the city, but given how long it's been since the Unanchoring, that's a bit of a lost cause.

Other than that, the Traveller's Association is stable? They run the Docks, though, uh, they're pretty constantly in flux themselves, due to the nature of their membership and leadership. Most of the Travellers don't stick around for long, or if they do, they tend to settle down as just plain residents of the city. We get return Travellers, of course, part of being a port of call open to the Void, but the Traveller's Association is stable by virtue of the generally overwhelming and strange firepower their disparate forces bring to bear when called upon to quell any trouble that springs up.

There are all the Guilds out there, of course, as well. But, for the most part, polities are either too local, too unstable, or I just plain don't have enough memory of them to give any kind of accurate telling. As for what I value...I value staying alive? I don't like that someone got murdered, but, I mean, who would? I'd probably have to experience more to think about my thoughts on them. Unless you want to present some hypotheticals?

You've got a point. Maybe once I figure out more about myself, I'll be able to more surreptitiously ask for some details. As for a gender...Maybe I used to? I can't quite recall, and it doesn't really matter to me anyways.

Back into the world of the material...

"Well, I'm just about ready to see the body, Fallow Fields. I make no promises as to my efficiency, as this is my first case of this caliber, to my recollection. I'll do my best regardless, though."

Fallow Fields nods at that, then turns away from me, to lead me up the stairs. A whisper from the Farmer's mouth flits into my ears. "Do not worry, Investigator. I am quite confident you will do your absolute best. It is a curiosity, really, more than anything else. Windowsill will reform in a few decades or a few centuries. Such things are harder for us mortals." A strange attitude to take towards a murder, regardless of impermanence, but I'm sure there are stranger.

As I ascend the stairs, I'll open the floor to any further questions I can answer in regards to this world, if needed. Or, perhaps, we can strategize for the corpse we are about to see?

Alright, I'll do that. Sounds good.

They come from all over, and they go all over. The Void is kinda...

The easiest way to explain this is, there's Reality, yeah? And then, outside of reality, like a ball covered in water, there's the Void. We're in the Void, because of the Unanchoring. And it's a lot easier to travel to other places on the ball, which represent all sorts of places and times, through the water, then having to dig through the ball itself, though there are definitely ways to do that. And so, Travellers come from Reality, or, well, various Realities, out into the Void, and orient themselves to shoot back into Reality at the place or time they want to be in. Though, of course, there are Travellers who make their living trading between Void settlements, groups, or between Reality and the Void, rather than just using us as a place to reorient their vehicles. Plus, there's also a bunch of accidental Travellers, who end up breaching into the Void through one way or another, and are stuck here until they figure out a way to breach back to their time and place in Reality, or until they get the fuel or means to do so.

Plus, the water is also home to like, a bunch of fish and water plants, some of which are really valuable, and others of which will eat you, or both! And that's the basic gist of it. Oh, and the Water itself likes to eat people, sometimes? Nobody's ever really figured out if the Void is sapient or not, I think.

As for the corpse, I mostly just have no idea of what to do, so...Kinda hoping you all have a plan before I'm exposed as a fraud. As far as I know, not typically? Like I said, the level of force typically required to take one out usually doesn't leave a body behind. I guess all we can do is hope, and stay calm.

Hello again, Entity Fish! OK, so, more explanations...

Blood is best described as, I guess, psychic energy given physical form? The mortal body, and most immortals, have blood, and it contains and circulates their psychic energy around their body, which is how our minds control our bodies. That's what the Physician's Guild says, anyways, from my...memory-less knowledge of it. So, when blood is removed, it serves as an easy way to transfer psychic power between people, or entities. So, most pacts, or deals with Entities, involve a lot of blood sacrifice or transfusion. Quite a few immortals, and most entities I can think of, tend to need blood in one way or another if they can't gather psychic energy. Mortals and some immortals passively generate psychic power through our blood, so blood is one of the more stable resources in the City, which is why Empire uses it to back their coinage. I'm sure there are some other benefits to having refined psychic power backing your coinage in one way or another, but that's getting into areas of pure speculation for me.

Conceptual Immortals are kinda like the manifestations of ideas or concepts. They gather psychic energy passively from people who believe in them or do what their idea signifies. Empire has some really powerful conceptual entities behind it, including, you know, Empire itself. Even people who aren't part of Empire are at least aware of and partially believe in the concept of an Empire, so it's pretty powerful. As for if they power their concept, not exactly? They can enhance it, and they definitely propagate it (Again, see Empire), but the concept still exists independently. It's more of an aggregation of the psychic power placed into a concept by virtue of belief by mortals. I will say that Windowsill might be a nickname or shortening of a much longer concept. Only really powerful concepts tend to have that sort of 'single name' thing going on, since it can be so broad.

Immortality can definitely be stolen, but probably not from a conceptually-based immortal, without some real fuckery. Immortality can come from all sorts of sources, like pacts, using enough psychic power to give yourself immortality (And I mean a lot of psychic power), or crafting some kind of item that grants you immortality, somehow. Some of those methods can be usurped or stolen, but conceptual immortality, not so much, unless you say, somehow managed to convince all of the people who believed in or practiced a concept to believe in YOU instead, or set yourself up as a 'false Avatar', stealing their belief until you become the conceptual immortal...but that's a very long-term process, and doesn't typically involve gunshots.

The Void, I kinda explained up there? It's just...raw energy, I guess. It's really useful, and a lot of useful and dangerous things live in it, but to us mortals, it's also typically super toxic. The City's protected by virtue of most entities recognizing the benefit of having us here and using some power to keep shielding us, and also the initial Unanchoring involving a lot of temporal power that's served to keep us in kind of a locational stasis. It's not perfect, so some of the toxic stuff seeps in (See that part where I talked about how some of the Void leaked in and that's why we use Masks), but it's not a giant enveloping pressure that would murder us all, so, that's good enough for me.

Hm...I mean, they're Empire? It's hard to explain. They're backed, mostly, by the conceptual immortal who represents Empire, which is a pretty big deal. They're militaristic, expansionist, and like to talk a lot about 'Reanchoring' the city. They're not huge fans of competing political ideologies, but they're pretty reasonable as long as you aren't actively promoting dissent. You may need to get a little more specific for me, here.

Anyways, I have some questions to ask back in the material realm...

I'm heading up the staircase to the Second Floor with Fallow Fields, so, now's the perfect time to ask. "So, Fallow Fields, did you know Windowsill?"

The Farmer answers, softly whispering to me. "Windowsill was a foppish sort...so I, as the designated no-nonsense personnel, took charge of the majority of his care. I can't help but feel just a tad bit responsible, for what happened..."

"Speaking of which, what did happen? In the sense of, why was Windowsill in the Hospital? Did he have someone who put him in here, any enemies?"

The Scarecrow replies, their lower voice resonating throughout the stairwell. "Windowsill was in long-term care, here...his state wasn't quite good. His concept has been slowly weakening for decades, now... there are not many people daydreaming and gazing out their windows longingly in these times, you know. He's been on a downward decline ever since the Unanchoring, but it only recently got as bad as to require the sort of long-term care only a Hospital or the Cult of Blood could provide. He wound up here, and, well, I believe you know the rest. As for any enemies...he supported Empire. I believe he thought that, if the City was Reanchored, it would allow him to regain power and life. It'd certainly allow for more whimsical pursuits, which tended towards his tastes." There's a mild undercurrent of displeasure with that. It seems the Orderly being isn't quite a fan of whimsy.

With that question, we arrive on the Second Floor. On one side, we have a few very firmly closed and sealed doors, labeled with "Operating Room - Authorized Personnel Only - No Entry to Unaccompanied Patients", "Ritual Room - Practitioners and Sacrifices Only", "Morgue". The Morgue has a paper on it, which reads "DO NOT ENTER WITHOUT DR. LARK - RISK OF DEATH/REANIMATION/KIDNAPPING/DEVOURING."

On the other side, there's a single door, half-open, which, presumably, leads to Windowsill's room. I've got a minute or so before we reach there, in case anyone has some last-minute questions, suggestions, or preparations.

[X] I have some more questions Fields.
-[X] What can an "weak" immortal like Windowsill do to support the empire.
-[X] do you know any faction/indervidual who would whant to keep the city in the current state or have it being taken over compelty by the Void.
--[X] If my fellow enties don't suggest any additional questions then it's about time to enter the crime scene.

---[X] John - do you mind if I call you John, if you don't have any other name that seems to be yours? Calling people whose names are unknown John or Jane Doe is pretty traditional in this profession as I understand it, though I think perhaps a different last name would be apropos for you in particular - John, be careful. Fallow Fields is presenting himself as a useful aide...but it could be a cover for his own indiscretions, if he pulled off whatever the fuck this is. Which we still don't know. Ugh, I'm not even an investigator, I just read too many detective books...
-[X] World questions:
--[X] Why does Fallow Fields have two...entities on its mask? Two masks? How on - oh, right, you're not on anything resembling the Earth I know - but still, how the heck does that work?
---[X] You can think of us as some people that are stuck on a different ball far distant from any you could know, if that helps.

Alright. Thanks for the questions! Yeah, more context is always better, though I'll have to rephrase it a bit to avoid drawing suspicion.

Alright, Fish. Good policy to not give out your name, though. Names hold quite a bit of usefulness, after all, for good or for ill.

Alright, I'll ask. I've got no clue what sort of authority I have, but I'll see what I can bluff my way into.

As for name? I've got no clue what my name is, or what to even call myself other than 'me'. Jack isn't my name, true or false, but I mean, who else are you gonna be talking to? Feel free to use any kind of name you want. I'll keep what you say about Fallow Fields in mind.

As for your questions: Fallow Fields seems to just have it. Could be representative of anything, from crossroads, to change, to more simple things. They're the Farmer and the Scarecrow, two oft-associated concepts (not entities I know of, though I wouldn't doubt they've got something representing their concepts out there). The Farmer typically represents health, fertility, stability, and of course, prosperity. The Scarecrow on the other hand (or head, heh) represents more often than not, defense, fear, danger, and privacy. So, theoretically, it could be a message telling people to respect their privacy, while also serving as a prayer for health and prosperity? There are a million different potential meanings, especially when you mix in their whole Order thing, so it's just random speculation.

If you meant that in the more 'how does it work' rather than 'what does it mean', they just had the mask made or made the mask that way themselves, and properly prepared it. Their two-voice thing is probably some kind of power, blessing, or pact, but we've all seen them doing things far more impressive than just speaking with two different voices out of different sides of their face.

I guess that does help? There's a lot of metaphorical balls out there, and the city is a tiny marble mixed in with them. But I get the concept. You folks are in a Reality.

With that settled, back to the material realm...

I pause, tapping my foot briefly to get Fallow Fields's attention. They turn around, effortlessly swinging around with barely a flourish, not an iota of wasted motion. "Yes, Investigator?"

"Before we enter, just a few more questions, if you'll excuse them..."

The Scarecrow rumbles. "You are graciously excused, Investigator. Feel free to ask any questions you require."

"So, first off, can I know Windowsill's full name? It'll help me narrow down some things."

The Scarecrow, again. "Of course...Windowsill's full name is Perched on a Windowsill, Dreaming of Better Days."

"So, ah, what could someone who needed such care as him offer to Empire? I can't imagine he was that useful to them."

The Farmer cuts in, melodically rambling on. "Oh, Investigator, you must have misunderstood me! He was not that kind of supporter, but he rather delightfully droned on and on to anyone who would listen, and quite a few who wouldn't, about the virtues of Empire, and how when the City was Reanchored under their benevolent rule, life would be so much better. I wasn't opposed to it myself, foppish as he was, but some of our more...volatile patients took quite the disliking to it. Radical Nonsense in particular was not a fan, and I recall Lady Painting having a shouting match with him one time he refused to leave their room. Mister Flowers was a lot quieter about their opinions, but I got the impression they weren't the biggest fan of it, either. Doctor Lark tolerated it, of course, he never wants to pass up the chance for an immortal to examine, and one long-term was worth the cost in annoying conversations and flared emotions. Though, well...I suppose we all know how that turned out."

"Does the Empire have any enemies represented here we should be aware of? Or in the general vicinity. And did Windowsill have any enemies or threats known to him?

The Scarecrow's voice, more thoughtful, now. "Well, there's a few Unionist, Nationalist, and Republicans groups around of course, but the blockade should have prevented any of their sort from getting in, except as patients. However...with that in mind, Radical Nonsense, a particularly fervent Unionist, was granted time to stay here, following some roughhousing engaged in with some Empire folk. I'd look to him in that regard, they and Windowsill, as I mentioned, really got into it verbally quite often. Other then that, I can't think of anything particularly egregious..."

"Now, I'll need to interview various members of the staff and patients-"

The Farmer interrupts me, giggling. "Of course, Investigator, of course! We are at your disposal."

My questions satisfied, for now...I step into the room.

The first thing that hits me is the smell, or rather, the lack of it. I imagine a room with a corpse in it to smell of blood, or rot, but the room smells...flowery, at most. Unoffensive, mild, it is not the sort of thing one expects from a room that has had a murder performed within it.

I glance around the room, taking it in. It's clearly set up for a long-term stay, yet is devoid of most personal effects, appearing almost as more of a vacant apartment than a hospital room, though the medical equipment placed around does spoil that a bit. In one corner of the room, there is a bed, made neatly. A sink in another corner, a bathroom off to the side, and, clearly the centerpiece of the room, a giant stained-glass window, with a large sill, easily enough for someone to sit on and gaze out into the streets below or the Void above. Sadly, this work of art has been shattered outwards, the tableau of Emperor Callum benevolently looking down upon the Empire, rendered in painstaking detail, disrupted with two holes through what appears to be Emperor Callum's chest.

Speaking of which, the Corpse of Windowsill has fallen backward from the windowsill, those two same holes mirrored in his own chest. The entity seems almost strangely preserved, the bird mask on his face undisturbed despite his fall, his suit lacking any sort of blood seeping from the wounds in his chest. I cannot see his face, but it is a strange sort of peace that seems to envelop Windowsill's Corpse.

That peace is, of course, disturbed by the presence of two other people in the room standing over the body, both of whom glance over at the sight of me and Fallow Fields entering the room. Fallow Fields speaks first. One of them is a man in doctor's attire, his head aflame and smoking, a mask of fire and embers. The other is one I have seen before, Mister Flowers, his wolf mask still firmly secured, holding his chalkboard and chalk in hand easily, despite his rubbery attire.

"Doctor Lark, Nurse Flowers, I have retrieved the Investigator, as per your request."

The Doctor nods, and turns to me. "Well, Investigator...the scene is yours, for now. We will remain to answer any questions you may have. When you're done with the body, please inform us. It needs to be moved to the Morgue as fast as possible."

Well, here we go. What should I look at? What should I look for? What questions should I ask?

[X] [Connection...]

[X] ask the doctor and nurse on where they are and what are they doing at the time of the murder in order to establish an alibi.
-[X] Take a glance at the crime scene to see if there any signs of a struggle and forced entry (Broken door hinges/lock, items thrown on the floor, dents in the wall, ect)
--[X] Take a closer look at the body of the victum, paying close attention on the bullet wounds.
---[X] Ask the doctor for gloves and surgical tools then try to get out the bullet out of the wound.

[X] Fish here, again. I'm probably going to ramble on for far too long here, but it's probably worth doing...
-[X] Huh. I guess that answers "who put the connection in": I'm getting pretty sure Lark did. I don't trust the man further than I could throw him, though, because...why on earth would he do this? How would he even know how? I may have misaimed suspicions but I'm not ruling him out as a potential perpetrator of this or even worse things.

-[X] Here goes speculation:
--[X] Interesting that whoever it was shot through the painting. If they knew what it was, it could have been an ideological statement. If they didn't, why did they needlessly complicate their line of fire? Unless they shot from inside the hospital...Or they needed to shoot through the picture for ritual purposes. Or shooting through the picture was an incidental byproduct of ritual purposes for assassinating the concept in the height of its power anyway. You've got some really conceptual stuff going on, and I can't rule it out from this end.
--[X] I don't actually think it's Radical Nonsense - there would have been more shouting. But seriously, I don't think Radical Nonsense would ever have been given the means or opportunity, even if there is a plausible motive.
---[X] Incidentally, a digression on Means, Motive, and Opportunity, the trifecta of crime. Means: The ability to accomplish the task. Motive: A reason to do something in the face of significant societal counterpressure. And Opportunity: The chance to actually have done it.
--[X] If Dr. Lark really wanted a research subject, though...

-[X] Questions for the doctors: (Note: Normally I'd be saying "write this stuff down" but you don't have a pad of paper or anything like that and you do have us, if you trust us, I suppose - and something about how this works means we can look back. Probably a good idea to prompt us if you're relying on us for remembering things, though. ...Not sure I would trust entities in your brain in your place but then you're in a pretty damn weird place so I can't fault you for it.)
--[X] First off, pull one of them aside, and then the other. Don't give them any more chances to coordinate stories. I think you should lead with Nurse Flowers, and then Dr. Lark. Fallow Fields should mind the corpse while we wait.
--[X] The usual "do you know anyone who would want to hurt Windowsill" - the things we had you ask of Fallow Fields, as regards the case.
--[X] (Sidenote: We should probably ask Fallow Fields at least the immediate five following questions too.)
--[X] Where were you when the attack happened?
--[X] Is there anyone who can corroborate where you were at the time?
--[X] Is this normally where you are at that point in the day? (If not, why were you there?)
--[X] How long have you known Windowsill?
--[X] How did you meet?
--[X] For Flowers specifically:
---[X] You informed me that you were going to check on an unruly patient after my awakening. Which patient was that?

-[X] The Corpse:
--[X] DON'T DISTURB THE CORPSE UNLESS WE'VE STOPPED COMING UP WITH NON-DISTURB-THE-CORPSE-ING IDEAS. ...seriously, people, preserve evidence.
---[X] We will want to have an autopsy done, eventually.
--[X] First off, did the bullets go through the corpse? Where did they go? Is the window open? If not, which way did the glass fall?
--[X] ...I'm probably being overly suspicious, but do get gloves before handling anything. It might have been poison.
--[X]

[X] Check in the sink and bathroom, over and under the bed, for anything suspicious or out of place.
--[X] Check outside the window too to see if you can line up where the shooter was when they took the shot and just what's exactly outside, and see what Windowsill has on his possession. And check his mask to see if theres anything noteworthy/suspicious there.
---[X] Check the window closer as well, where anatomically did the holes penetrate the pictured dude, is it in the same spots as Windowsill? And check the room's dimension's, ya can never look to thoroughly.
----[X] Ask how long ago this happened if it hasn't been asked yet.
-----[X] Ask them all where and what Windowsill was doing last they remembered him before being shot.
——[X] Ask what's with the war with the physicians guild outside and ask if the unruly patient on the third flower flowers went to check on is nonsense or the painted lady.
-------[X] Ask about the gunshot's you heard in the hospital and where they came from

Great, alright, those are some great suggestions. I will say, I already have some gloves on. I mentioned I was wearing workman's attire, right? Is this a cultural difference thing? Other than that, here are some answers I can give you right now.

There appear to be no broken door hinges, dents, or locks that I can see, from when I came through the door. The window appears to still be firmly intact, despite the two holes through it. However, I will say, in regards to the wound, considering how the bullets went through the window that was, presumably, behind the victim, they aren't stuck inside of him. But I will inspect the wounds themselves.

--[X]

-[X] The Corpse:
--[X] DON'T DISTURB THE CORPSE UNLESS WE'VE STOPPED COMING UP WITH NON-DISTURB-THE-CORPSE-ING IDEAS. ...seriously, people, preserve evidence.
---[X] We will want to have an autopsy done, eventually.
--[X] First off, did the bullets go through the corpse? Where did they go? Is the window open? If not, which way did the glass fall?
--[X] ...I'm probably being overly suspicious, but do get gloves before handling anything. It might have been poison.

OK, Fish, let's start with your speculation: Lark, as a Doctor here, very well could've done the operation and/or ritual to implant the connection into my head. As for the how and why? I have no idea, I am neither a ritual conductor nor any kind of Physician. I can ask, if you'd like?

I can understand Means, Motive, and Opportunity. I will caution you against judging someone based either on their name or on what others say about them. Many dwellers choose their names to purposefully confuse or obfuscate their true natures, though some are more blatantly obvious or truthful. I'll keep what you say in mind, though.

As for the questions, can and will do.

To answer some of them immediately: The bullets seem to have gone through the corpse, out the window. There's no way I can see to retrieve them, if they're even still there. There's no shattered glass on the inside of the building that I can see, and no way for the window itself to be opened. I've got gloves on, as I said above.

Alright, I'll do that first. Though, I will say, since you can apparently look back through our already existing conversations, you should be able to recall that we heard the shots ring out. Time is a bit of a...touchy subject around here, and hard to judge.

As for the window, it appears as if the two holes in Windowsill's chest are mirrored in the stained glass. It's not an exact one to one, I believe, due to height differences, but it's in the same general area. Two shots in the chest. Seems to indicate Windowsill was standing on the windowsill, and then fell backwards, would be my guess, due to the state of the body. As for the room's dimensions, it appears to have three, though that is the norm for the City in general.

Now, back in the Material Realm...

"Alright, gentlefolk. I'll be pulling you outside, one by one, to quickly interview you. Nurse Flowers, you'll be first." He nods, silently, and quietly steps out into the hallway. "Fallow Fields, please watch over the body. It must not be disturbed." Doctor Lark seems mildly displeased by this, but I step outside, putting it out of mind soon enough. Mister Flowers is waiting for me out there, still as a statue, not having made a sound this entire time, despite his rubber clothes and mask. He marks something down on the chalkboard. At least that makes a sound, as before, compared to his unnatural silence and stillness. His writing reads "QUESTIONS?"

"I'll do my best to make this quick. " "GOOD"

"Are you aware of anyone who would want to hurt Windowsill?" "NO"

"Where were you when the attack happened?" "WITH LARK"

"What were you doing?" "TALKING TO PATIENT"

"Is this what you typically do at that time?" A shrug.

"Do you know where Windowsill was at the time?" "IN ROOM?"

"How well did you know Windowsill?" This question just gets another shrug.

"How did you meet?" "PATIENT"

"Has he been in long-term care for long?" "NOT LONG, NONE HERE LONG" The longest response yet. Progress?

"Why is the Physician's Guild blockading the Hospital?" This one gets him to pause, and then he scribbles out an even longer answer. "WE ARE UNLICENSED - SQUATTERS? OFF-BOOKS - MUCH BETTER THEN THEY ENDORSE - THEY CAUGHT UP - TRYING TO FLUSH US OUT"

Well, that certainly explains a lot. I'm going to pause the questioning here, and return to the connection...

Do we have any more questions for Mister Flowers, in light of this new information? Or can we call in Mister (Not actually a licensed Doctor or Physician, I should think) Lark?

[X] [The Connection thrums.]

[X] Fish here.
-[X] Honestly, this is pretty good, solid information. Easily checked.
-[X] Followup: Which patient were you talking to?
-[X] I think we can call in Lark, whatever his title may be.
-[X] Note: Don't mention any of the information you got from Flowers, to Lark, until you're done interrogating him at least.

-[X] Question for you: Why isn't time, and why was it around Fallow Fields? My apologies for prying, but we don't have any of your learned social context.

The Interrogations Begin (Part 2)
Huh, first time writing one of these for this. I'm sorry this one's taken a bit longer than the others. Life's been hitting me hard lately, mostly through college work. I'll do my best to be more consistent in the future! Thanks for your continued readership/participation.

Great. I'm glad you've all got a handle on this.

To answer your question, we must go back to the founding of the Old Empire, with Empress Irithyll. Originally a general of the nascent Empire, which saw itself as more of a mercantile association of various Republican city-states with a collective army to suppress various entities, Unionist or Nationalist uprisings, or foreign entities seeking to seize power. Irithyll, long-rumored to have been dabbling with pacts and entities, proved all of these rumors true by marching a legion of pactmakers, thralls, and avatars, alongside various entities, to the capital (now the City we reside in), and seizing power from the Governor. Now, this was a risky manuever, so Irithyll pulled out a very, very large gun on this matter. Nobody knows how she managed it, but she managed one of the few known Pacts with a Raw entity, Time itself.

Some context for that: Raw entities are, essentially, conceptual or immortal entities that have managed to amass so much power that they, we believe, outgrow most of our ability to perceive them or for them to perceive us. Good examples of this would be Hunger, Time, and some theorize that potentially even Void itself is just a Raw entity. Now, Raw entities certainly can have their power used, but it's less a 'sharing' or a 'pact' as much as it is an undiluted flood of raw power (hence the name). This typically either burns out people, turning them into Thralls, or, if they can control it and are lucky, Avatars.

Now, with Irithyll's pact formed, her armies could travel weeks or months worth of distance in a day, the time of day was always whatever was most favorable for her, and it's rumored that whenever she died of unnatural causes, time merely reset itself to avoid it. There are a few cults around the city built around people who were trapped in time loops by her. She bore a child of an unknown father, and her pact was passed down through the bloodline.

Following her rule as Empress, things progressed as they typically do with Empires, until we get to the Last Emperor (may he rot beyond eternity), who decided to use the power her pact had granted her bloodline, which, naturally, had weakened over time, to try and renew his own powers. By trapping Time. And as many other entities as he could catch. While also engaging in multiple wars of expansion.

Within a year or two, the Empire was disintegrating, Nationalist, Unionist, Irithyllian, and Republican insurgencies bleeding it dry, alongside the various foreign armies and surviving entities that wanted pieces of said crumbling Empire. But this time had granted the Last Emperor enough time to enslave and shackle dozens, hundreds, potentially even thousands of entities to himself, his own body held up only by the benefits his enslavement of Time had granted him. His mind was already gone, though, and so, a mad god was nearly born in the City. Any force that attempted to take the City without incredibly overwhelming force would've been decimated by his powers, and no entity wanted to risk enslavement at his hands, to be drained or used as a conductor for his power.

So, in the end, it was mortals who took the fight to him. Their names are not known, their faces never recorded, their knowledge and power never passed down. But what is known is that, at some point, a group of mortals entered The Last Emperor's Palace, and broke the chains that had bound Time to his will, by extension, freeing all other entities attached to him through Time. And then, Time took its mighty vengeance upon the Last Emperor, with no regard for collateral damage, which turned out to be about ten miles in every direction, though most of the sea drifted off into the Void a while ago. Curse after curse was laid upon him (and by extension, the surrounding area), as it was yanked out of material space by sheer virtue of the depth of Time's fury. Ever since then, Time's been in kind of...a stasis in the city? It's hard to describe.

Things happen, "time" passes, but for the most part, Time can get...frustratingly relative, especially with the lack of a sun. People are born, people age (that's more of a 'Fertility/Life' and 'Hunger' interaction), but every clock is stopped, there are entire districts located in either the past or the future of the City which theoretically go on forever, and at the Docks, people claim to arrive from all sorts of different times. The working theory is that Time just refuses to exist in the city any more then it has to. Now, there's a few easy loopholes around this, which is why most of us aren't frozen in time. Namely, as long as you aren't the Last Emperor, the effects are greatly weakened. Everything besides him was just collateral damage, and Time doesn't exactly care about it, though it's not going to undo it. Secondly, it technically doesn't count if you bring Reality to yourself, making a sort of breach, which isn't that hard if you've got the power. That'd be my guess for the trick Fallow Fields pulled. They somehow bring Reality to themselves, anchoring themselves briefly to put people off-guard. Objective time passing is a very rare sensation in the City, so it'll throw most people off.

Now, back to the material realm...

"Which patient were you talking to?" "RADICAL NONSENSE".

"Thank you, that'll be all." He nods, and we both head back into the room.

Fallow Fields seems to be casually chatting with Do-Mister Lark...their coat is gone. In it's place, they are flipping a shimmering coin which exudes the same presence, rolling it along their knuckles, and doing other assorted tricks.

Anything I should do in the room before calling Mister Lark out? Any suggestions or insights? General questions?

[X] [The Connection Returns.]

[X] Fish here again.
-[X] Questions for Dr. Lark:
--[X] The same round of questions, mostly.

Question for the QM: Is Fallow Fields the one with the coin? I think that's how it goes.

Question for the QM: Is Fallow Fields the one with the coin? I think that's how it goes.
Speaking as the QM here: Yes, that is intended to convey that Fallow Fields no longer has their shimmering coat, and instead has a shimmering coin that has a similar presence to the coat.

To give y'all a quick update, I've set myself a deadline of pushing the next update tomorrow and attempting to keep to a once every day or two update schedule in addition to that, to keep things moving.

And then SV exploded. And got flooded.

So uh, when do you think that update will be?
