The SV Mafia Megathread

Intro, Past Games, Upcoming Games
Welcome, one and all, to SV's very own Mafia Megathread. This thread will primarily be used for organizing Mafia games and formalizing a game request system, but of course I can't stop people from using it how they like if they're talking about Mafia. Now, you may be wondering: What do I mean, Mafia? Is SV run by some criminal organization of greasy Australians? The answer is yes, but that mafia and this Mafia aren't quite the same.

What is Mafia?
Mafia is a party game devised by Dmitry Davidoff in 1986. In its most basic, original form, Mafia pits two groups of people against each other: The "Town", and the "Mafia". The Town are the uninformed majority; they do not know who anyone is but themselves. The Mafia are the informed minority; the Mafia know who the other members of the Mafia are, and, by elimination, who the Town is. Each group has it's own goal that it must reach to win the game. The Town must eliminate all the Mafia to make themselves safe, and the Mafia must become a majority of the playerbase. So, how do they do this?

Mafia is divided into two phases, a Day Phase and a Night phase. During the Day phase, every player gets to vote for someone who they think is the Mafia. At the end of the day phase, the person with the most votes is 'lynched', their role revealed, and the game switches to the Night phase. During the Night phase, the Mafia can target a single player and kill them. Once the next Day phase starts, their role is revealed, and so the game continues on until someone wins. The town is not forced to simply vote randomly, however; Mafia is a game of discussion and debate, and every day should be filled with arguments flying about as to who is the Mafia in the town's midst. The Town must deduce, and the Mafia must deceive, for either to achieve victory.

So end the rules for basic Mafia. In practice, though, games of Mafia (especially those held online) have a variety of gimmicks: third parties, people with Night powers on each side, modifications of the base rules to establish a certain theme. As such, the description above is only generally applicable, and may be modified at the GM's discretion. A good GM will tell you if there are any drastic changes to the base rules, though additions and modifications may remain hidden.
How do I play?
Mafia is a relatively simple game to play in the mechanical sense: during the Day Phase, one indicates who they want to vote for, usually using the phrase "Lynch Example Player", or something similar. During the Night phase, those who have Night actions send the GM a Private Message indicating who their target is or how they will otherwise use their ability. Day Phases tend to last longer than Night Phases, on the whole - this is to give people more time to talk. Though up to GM discretion, they usually tend to be three days or more. Night phases, on the other hand, rarely last more than 48 hours, and sometimes end early when all actions are received. A word of warning to prospective GM's, though - do not be overeager in ending a Night phase when you've received all actions. Mistakes happen, and mistakes during the Night phase are often more troublesome than during the Day.

Usually, lynches are decided by one of two methods: Plurality and Majority. A plurality lynch kills the person who has the most votes at the end of the day - even if someone has only a single vote, if no one else does, that person is lynched. Majority kills only if a majority of the players have voted for that person. Majority lynch games often have a mechanic known as a "Hammer", where the day instantly ends the moment someone receives the Majority vote. This serves to speed up the game, but can make people feel like they've been cut off from discussion.

The following are some general rules used in previous online Mafia games here on SV. Keep in mind that they may be changed between games, and that you should always make sure to read the GM's version of the rules.
  • All Roles will be randomly assigned to players, to prevent favoritism.
  • The game is separated into Day and Night phases. Day phases end after 72 hours, Night phases end after 48 hours or when all Night actions are received. Extensions may be granted upon player request.
  • Always post at least once per Day phase. This is to keep the game from falling silent.
  • Do not write illegible, hidden, or coded messages. The GM must be able to, theoretically, understand what you are saying.
  • Players must stop posting within the game thread after they die. Dead players cannot discuss the game with living players.
  • Do not discuss the game with other players outside of the game thread unless explicitly allowed by your role.
  • Do not edit your posts within the game thread. This is to prevent you and others from lying about the contents of an edited post.
  • Do not directly quote your role.
  • When voting for another player, make certain that your vote stands out from the rest of your post. This is often done by making the text larger and/or colored differently.
  • Always be trying to win. Don't give up. In general, don't act against the spirit of the game.

I still don't really get it.

That's perfectly fine! Mafia is a lot to take in all at once, but there's plenty of online resources out there. Plenty of other online communities have their own Mafia threads, and the MafiaScum Wiki is also extremely useful to new and old players. Additionally, reading through previous games can help you understand how they work to a larger extent than simply reading the rules online. And remember, it's okay to make mistakes if you're new! The only way to learn is to play, and even I broke the rules twice in my first game.

Upcoming Games

To claim a game slot, simply post that you wish to run a game and tag me to be added to the list. For the sake of game health, it is usually considered best to only run one game at a time, unless the players in each game are different. This keeps people from having their attentions split between games, and in general is less stressful for those involved.

To those interested in running a game, keep QuickTopic in mind! It allows for players in groups to communicate with one another, and can be publicized once the game is over.

So follows the current upcoming games:

Mafia XVI: @Logos
Mafia XVII: @AlphaDelta

Mafia XVIII: @TPK

Well, I know I made mistakes myself. At any rate, one rule I added for my game and probably will keep is some sort of participation rule.

For a lynch to pass during the day, at least 50% of the players must be voting.
I understand the issue is debatable and some just want to stay in the background but in return, it get participation and someone is not lynched just because 2-3 bothered to vote in a larger group, which kinda suck.

Incidentally, I'll point out for any newcomer starting to read this thread that common courtesy would ask to not discuss an ongoing mafia game here.

Please count me in. I didn't know SV had forum mafia! I'm a huge fan and have played dozens of games, I'd love to join the next game that's played.

I tried going for 3rd's Mafia...but it crashed and burned, digging a huge trench in the ground before take off that I've never gotten a chance to play one..
Sign me up!
(Only one game though. Yeah.)

Funnily, I have two different ones that I'm planning. One was a bit more complex, and I can alter it to fit this forum over the other that I was planning to run it on, assuming I can find my notes/don't have to make new ones. The second is a back to basics thing, one this forum might need to get their arguing up to snuff.

I'd be willing to put it to a vote.

I'd also suggest that GMs, when they create their games, list the minimum and maximum players in here.

There seems to be quite the tendency for a full hidden role list, looking at the games!

Plus, then I can't claim roles which don't exist in order to incite confusion and mayhem and that would just be terrible.

I think I could certainly host/DM a game, though I seriously doubt it'd be as themed or exciting as any of those game linked up above.

Well, I did play some games and hosted a game before, so.

My main contribution to Mafia was the Time Manipulator, which was a delayed Rolestopper.

Either's fine with me. New may be harder, but I'm certainly up for it.

(Also, I've noticed I've played in all five games. Don't know if anyone else's done that. )

To be fair I have also been thinking about a few maf games but i have no time! School is kicking my ass.

But otherwise, one possible game is Magical Girl Raising Project themed and the other is a really fucked up family reunion. I was not joking about Obaa-chan with a shotgun. Though it'll probably not have Japanese weeaboo terms :p

I thought about it before, but the idea of family members lynching one another is a tad too horrible for me in context to consider running.
