Not gonna lie: the main reason I put "Love and Cats" first place is because I can't get enough of soldiers bitching about their life. It always manages to make me laugh.

First of all, I do not have a horse in this race. Since the time I saw this contest in a banner, until the point at which the entries were due, I lost my job, had my car break down, and my little brother died. So I didn't feel up to writing an entry.
I have read the entries, and then reread them, and while I didn't have much to say in the form of a review, I will point out some honorable mentions in my vote. These are ones that I felt were pretty decent stories, just not in my top 5.

(Would have been my pick for number 8. Initially I had dismissed the story for having a summary format that mirrored another fiction, but I later realized that for the required word length, it was neccessary to summarize the past events.)

Record of inherited memory had fun world building
The ups and downs of a villainess almost made it, if the story had started with the genre shift it would have been amazing but as is it was too much of an overview that focused on the fact that the main character was evil for what having her fiancée break up with her and not bankrupting herself for improvements that will be stolen which had already happened once.
All the stars in the sky was boring because all they needed was a list of idea's not a person so a library would work for that.
Falling Far (From the tree is fine, but this is a little extreme) was great right up until she perma killed herself to become a ship
After which I ran out of steam. I couldn't read anymore, if I had to vote it would be

it felt like the story was just beginning, and therefore had the most potential. Even if it was looking like way more civ building then I enjoyed. If I ever get back to read the rest I might change my vote though.
When the branch burned she went back to being the tree; each time she broke she came back as something smaller and more broken until she burned. The tree was her main body and the branch was a part of it. When she let herself get turned into wood for a ship it meant that when that ship dies the tree will be a stump, by the time she returns the stump will be dead because their isn't any way to gain energy. She isn't dead just yet but she gave up her only respawn mechanic in the hopes that a slave girl would be left on the ship rather then sold.
