In The Beginning...

There are certain words which come to mind when one thinks of a cult leader. Charismatic. Intelligent. Manipulative. Dangerous. Murderous. Megalomaniac. Controlling.

After a moment of serious thought, words associated with the outcomes spring to mind. Spiritual growth. Brainwash. Happiness. Despair. Community. Exploitation. Power. Hope.

For most people, this is as deeply as they are willing to think about those who stand at the helm of cults. For some they are a positive influence, a facet of the communities they touch. For others, they are nothing but scammers using people's willingness to believe in order to line their own pockets. For most, it is something to be ignored, an insignificant part of their day until something entertaining happens.

For you, a nebulous concept of being which the word you represents, deeper thought is required. You are a Spark of the Divine, a form of energy which propagates through faith. Such was the range held by the concept of faith, you could have found fertile souls in both the dutiful priest or the most ardent atheist. However, there was a desire guiding you to a different soul. You sought a soul which was like a fertile field, ready to spread the energy which was you far and wide.

You found one such soul. The soul was one of a cult leader, though if it was already one or would become one due to your meddling did not matter. Your energy would touch many souls through this one, making it perfectly suited as your vessel.

In the form of energy, you could only perceive the soul of your chosen vessel. However, as you entered the vessel, you became aware of the world which would be your home.

[] The Serene Seven, seven corporations who have taken control of the entirety of Earth's economy, have ushered in a wave of hyperconsumerism. The concept of voting only applies to the 5% of the population which hold Shares in the Serene Seven, and the world now only exists to generate money for the corporations. But the people need more than vapid materialism or empty placating phrases like "Vote with your wallet." They need Faith.
[] The world of Saoirse is an old world. From the ancient, rotting land of Huis, where ancient kings of bone and ash still remember the birth of civilization, to Sodha, the young land of inventors and madmen, there are many marvels. What it lacks, however, are Gods. For one hundred and tens years, the destruction of the Gods have prevented all attempts to raise new ones. Now, on the eve of the 111th year, the time is ripe to climb the Cursus Imperium and become the God of Saoirse
[] The fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of a highly interconnected world has led many people to despair. You, someone who has a small spark of true power, shall lead them out of despair, out of hopelessness, and into the future. You shall give them hope.

With awareness of your surroundings comes the awareness of your vessel. You began to take root in the vessel, feeling the neurons coursing with memories. You placed yourselves within the countless pulses of your vessel's mind, tasting the memories within. Each memory was a new sensation, a new flavor, a new experience. Compared to your vessel's memories, you had experienced nothing. Wonderful.

[] Your vessel became a cult leader not because they had a vision or a faith which would exceed all others. No, your vessel formed a cult for a pure desire for profit, out of a bet with another cult leader. The surprise they felt as their cult's beliefs became true was wonderful.
[] Your vessel had been in a deep, pervasive coma before you arrived, and your joining with them had awakened them. The trauma of their awakening, however, gave them insight into the world and the dark places between. Now, they preach a dogma against that dark, to prepare for the worst.
[] You had joined your vessel before their birth, your energy molding your developing vessel. You had improved them, focusing their future development at the cost of other matters. Unfortunately, to do so you needed to steal the energy of another Spark you passed, creating a dark reflection of your vessel.
[] Your vessel truly believes in their people, and believes it is time to lead them to the next stage of their evolution. You will allow your vessel to achieve their goal. However, are their people really ready for such power?

With knowledge of your vessel, you slowly began diffusing throughout their body. You learned of limbs, of breath, of a beating heart and hot blood. You were discovering new sensations, though the consciousness which you had for time unknowable was beginning to slip away. By joining with your vessel, you were ending. Your newfound sensations, the essence of emotions, would all drift away into nothingness. You were not fearful, but content. This was how it should be.

There was little metaphorical time left to enjoy your awareness, but you were determined to provide your vessel a means with which to access your energy. Without such a means, the energy would rupture your vessel in a great explosion. You did not want your energy to be wasted in such a way.

[] You gathered around your vessel's heart, molding it into a generator for Divine Power. Gold circuitry spread through their body, forming points around the joints where the Divine Power could shine through. While it pales in comparison to the Spark of the Divine, unable to fill a vessel without fleeing, it will never be stolen from your vessel. Perhaps your vessel's Inner Light could become far stronger than your Spark of the Divine, in time.
[] You focused your attention on the hands of your vessel's hands, forming gold spots over the palm and black spots over the knuckles. These would serve as conductors for your vessel's divine power, forming pathways to imbue objects with their power. The cost for the ability to endlessly store their power, however, is the inability to use it without imbuing. No doubt your vessel would work around the limitations of their Divine Generator.
[] You stayed in the mind, weaving yourself in the grey matter of your vessel. The only mark which was visible to the world would be a single gold mark, a circle on their forehead, above and between the eyes. In time, they would harness their Mind's Eye to conduct great rituals far stronger than their eventual Chosen. Until then, they would need to prepare, for their power would not help them without preparing.
[] As you settled within your vessel, you tasted the world about it. The world was dangerous, and a strange new emotion dawned upon you: fear. Seeking a way to defend your vessel, you formed two gold rings on their palms. From the Inner Fold, your vessel would be able to conjure weapons and objects from concepts, though they would not survive long away from contact with your vessel. You had no doubts your vessel would find a creative solution.

You are little more than a tiny wisp now, a single flicker of Spark left outside your vessel. The changes you made are almost complete, and you regret not being able to see what your vessel with do with your power. You are a Spark of the Divine, however, and your purpose has never been to see the great works you caused. You only need to cause them in the first place.

The last flicker of you enters your vessel, and you cease to be, consumed by the consciousness within your vessel.

You are [] Write-In Cult Leader Name.

Welcome to The New Faith: A Cult Leader Quest. In this, you play the leader of a small cult attempting to grow for a variety of reasons, but the key reason is because your cult's faith is based on your own Divine Power. There is much to do, much to plan for, as well as many lessons to give to your cult. I will explain the system I'm using for this quest, the Flip system, later. For now, expand your cult, look towards the future, and enjoy your life as a Cult Leader.

Oh, and despite everything, I wrote this before I found Aspirant, the other cult quest which is currently active. Absolutely nothing has been taken from that quest, and I wish nwish425 the best.

Basic thought is that a world run by greedy megacorporations provides an understandable 'villain' for a movement to form against and perhaps even a goal outside of merely 'make a popular religion'.

@Raiu Could you possibly explain the divine heart generator and Mind's Eye one because I'm on the fence with either. I want to vote for Mind's Eye but it's too ambiguous

@Raiu so plan or regular voting?
More cults are always good! Perhaps a cult crossover one day, when both get big enough?

Kinda like the idea of lifting the people out of their conditions, perhaps turn the fortunes of Russia so it goes down a better path than how stuff went down OTL. Then, to even greater prospects!

Hmmm, divine heart generator... Well, this gives me an excuse to explain three of the four.

Inner Light is pretty much a generic style, though it does have the ability (for 10-1000 DP) to instantly Invest in Followers in a very overt, very flashy way. You pretty much become a Holy Light Bulb (of Antioch). Anyway, instead of doing any particular thing well (as the others represent), Inner Light lets you spread the power around. It's a little expensive, but Inner Light can snowball once you have a goodly amount of Divine Power. (This option needs playtesting.) It also has the ability to Burn (yes, Burn, as in remove completely) the Cult Leader's DP in order to (what's the word?) Enlighten a Follower, basically turning them into another Cult Leader. The Enlightened gets 1/10th of the DP burnt, but they can improve themselves like the Cult Leader. (PLAYTESTING NEEDED.)

The Divine Generator loses the ability to spend Divine Power which has not been placed in anything (which takes a turn to do), but you'll be able to hand it off to your (ok, I need a word for this) Leaders for use in their tests. Normally, the Cult Leader would need to be a part of a test in order to spend DP on it, but by Imbuing them into objects, your Leaders can use them. (For flavor, I'd ask for some idea as to what is being Imbued into.) (This option needs playtesting.) Oh, and your Imbued Divine Power does not get removed after it is used, so you can quickly snowball. This is important since your normal DP is functionally useless to you. Fun fact, you can Imbue DP into people. Imbued people can't handle it like Invested people, so they eventually explode. Violently. (PLAYTESTING NEEDED)

Mind's Eye, meanwhile, is built completely around Rituals. In Rituals, you spend DP in order to get a variety of effects (Generic: double the resources gained for a test this turn, create Special Followers, remove obstacles to your cult, turn an entire village/small town of people into Followers, etc), and the Mind's Eye let's you count the DP you spent as double what it actually was, or attempt Ascended Rituals which are like normal Rituals but much more effective. (This option needs playtesting).

I enjoy planned voting for these kinds of votes, which makes my job quite a bit easier.

On the note of the crossover... EH? I haven't done anything like that beyond references (if you want to see that, feel free to take a look at my previous Quests), and if I do something like that, then there'd be a big talk in order to figure out how that works.

File that into a blue sky folder, and we'll get to that if we get to it.

I was thinking crossovers like maybe a glimpse of the other timeline in a vision from a character or an omake, something small. The time periods might not match up, but the existence of otherworldly, dimension-crossing entities can allow for the knowledge of those other dimensions!

Thanks for the info Qm I'll stick with the Divine Generator since its basically the all around option while Mind's Eye is cool it's too specialized into rituals for my liking and the whole enlightening a follower thing is good for getting a co-cult leader witch sounds like a good thing all around

Wow, didn't realize how many times I said Earth in one sentence. This has been fixed, but don't worry, it won't affect your votes.

Nine votes in so far, and we have an interesting mix of ideas. Our current front runner is a friar (gotta beat those Corpo tax collectors with a stick), while our runner up is a Russian mystic. Ho boy, I can't wait to see what else you guys come up with.

Vote will stay up for another hour, in case there is a sudden flood of votes which moves us away from Plan "Get outta my church!"

Of all the things I expected to see at the start of this, a character based off of the friar in Disney's Robin Hood was not what I expected. Admittedly, it's a little more family friendly than Man in Tights, so there's that.
