The Lie-Eating Dragon and the Red Spider's Web (LiEat Quest)

Made it to Laurel Town!
Oh, you've got one!

"Caitlin!" You shout out with gusto! It's a great name, for sure, Theo ought to be happy with it!

...You wait for him to nod.

...

He sighs.

"...Then, we'll go with Calvin," he says, rubbing his temple. "Call me Cal."

"What's wrong with what I picked?!"

"Do I look like a Caitlin to you?"

"You could!"

Aaah! You cry in defiance as he grinds a knuckle into your head - so mean!

"That's enough out of you. Remember, I'm Cal. You're my sister. And why are we here?" He asks, squinting carefully at you.

"Umm...you got a sweet scoop about this town, so we're investigating a rumor about-"

He flicks you! Aaaahhhh!

"That's why Theo is here. Cal and his sister are traveling peddlers staying in town for a few days to peddle and make connections."

You just hmph, holding the spot that's now been flicked twice. He could've just told you that...

"Got it?"

"...Yeah..." You say with a little huff. Theo...um, Cal, looks out the window, so you cross your arms and sit around. Next time...next time you can dodge the flick! Or maybe, surprise him and puff a little fire...

. . .

You're not paying attention when the train stops - Cal has to shake you to get your attention. He picks up his huge backpack, and makes you pick up another slightly-smaller-but-still-huge backpack, full of random stuff he says you needed for coming here. Cal takes your hand and pulls you along so you can finally get off the train...

Together, you step off the train and onto the mostly empty train platform at the edge of Laurel town!

Cal was right, it seems a lot like Indigo town. It's a pretty 'out of the way' place, and it's pretty, um...rural! Yeah. There's no sidewalk or roads like in some other towns you go to, just big dirt paths. And there's a lot of grass and trees and stuff too! Even around most of the buildings they have trees next to them, and...

Woah?! There's a huge tree house! How did you not see that already? When you turned to look farther into town, you noticed a huuuuge tree, so big that it's clear to see even from so far away! It's so tall and fat, it looks like it has a whole bunch of treehouse-looking-stuff built up around the whole thing!

"Whaaa?! Theo, look! What's with the giant tree?!"

You turn to look at him...and see his hand readied in a flicking posture right in front of your face.

Woosh! You duck straight down right before it hits you, so he only flicks your bow!

"What was that for!" you cry, still crouching down and holding your hands over your head.

"Did you already forget my name?"

"...Oh. Well, it would've been easier if you went with the one I picked!"

He groans and grabs your hand, pulling you back up and facing out toward where the giant tree is.

"Just don't forget again." He squints at you mean-ily, then looks out and up at the big tree. "Apparently it's the oldest tree on the planet. There's no records of it ever not being here. And the most common theory is it was made so big with magic."

"Magic? So a dragon made it?" you wonder, curious.

"Probably. Anyway, let's head over there. It's where we'll be staying."

"Oh, 'kay," you mumble, following as he pulls your hand and starts walking. "...Wait, huh?"

. . .

"Woaaaahhhh..." you look up at the gigantic tree. Cal lead you through the town, to the center, where the huge tree is. There's some stairs going up around the trunk, the lead up to a little tree house looking thing higher up...and then from that treehouse you see more stairs that go up, with a bunch of different paths spiraling around the tree to different little treehouses...it looks so cool! You've never seen anything like it! Oh...and by the stairs, there's a little sign on the ground that says 'This way to Inndrasil'...what's an inndrasil?

"Come on," Cal tugs on your hand and keeps moving, heading toward the entrance.

"Are we really staying in this big tree?" you ask excitedly as you hurry behind him.

He grunts a 'yeah' kind of grunt, "The inn is built into the tree."

"So cool!!"

You follow Cal up the stairs, circling up and around to the first little room...which, like he said, looks like the lobby for an inn! But, everything's wood, and it's not very decorated. Straight ahead when you go in is a counter with one person sitting there.

"Ah, welcome to Inndrasil!" The boy turns and notices you and Cal, and greets you with a pretty smile. You aren't so great at guessing people-age, but he's probably...sixteen? "...I know, the name is corny. Er, will you be staying here tonight?"

Cal pulls down his scarf and walks up to the counter with a bright smile, still pulling you along.

"Yes, that's right. My sister and I are travelers, and we were hoping to stay in this town for a few days."

"Ohh, I see," the guy says, sliding the thick book on the counter in front of him, "Travelers, huh? What brings you to Laurel?"

"We're peddlers of a sort. We travel to all kinds of places, big cities and little towns, buying and selling wares; that sort of thing."

"I see, I see! Going all over like that, you must get to see a lot of interesting stuff, huh?"

"Yeah!" You pipe up, "We get to go all kinds of cool places, meet all kinds of nice people, and eat a bunch of candy!"

"Aha, is that so?" the smiling guy leans over the counter a little to look at you. "Heh, you seem a lot like my little sister. What's your name? I'm Gareth."

"I'm Efi!" you answer his introduction with your own.

"And I'm Calvin, but please, call me Cal," Cal jumps in with his introduction too, still all smiles.

"Alright then, Cal, Efi," he nods happily at you both, "It's nice to meet you - we don't see folks like you here, often."

"I would think you see lots of travel through here with an attraction like this," Cal answers coolly, looking around at the treehousey surroundings.

"Mm...well, sure, but not usually anything like traveling salesmen," Gareth shrugs, "Anyways, how many days will you be staying?"

. . .

You go with Cal up around some walkways on the outside of the tree, to get to your room. You were kinda worried the beds and stuff would just be wood, but it the rooms look pretty normal, you guess. Except for the room itself being made of wood, it's just a regular hotel room with a bunch of furniture and a couple of beds.

Beds! You set your stuff down, flop into the closer bed and bounce a couple times. Hmmm...they seem comfy enough.

"Don't get your clothes all wrinkled up, brat. They weren't cheap." Cal mutters as he walks in and sets his own stuff down, then inspects the room.

"Fiiiine," you get off the bed and look around. As normal as the room is, it's also pretty boring...you hope you don't get stuck in here...

========
You sigh a bit to try and expel a bit of stress, but it doesn't accomplish much.

Now, you've secured a room for the next few days. Now you can focus on investigating that rumor.

You got a hot tip from a familiar informant while you were staying in the next town over - you don't hear from them often, but what you get from them tends to be very recent. It might even be too recent and specific to be called a 'rumor', honestly...

Still, a rumor that a traveling miracle doctor is currently staying in Laurel town, huh... You only had a few anecdotes to go off; stories about serious illnesses being fully cured, injuries vanishing...completely insubstantial stuff, but that informant is one of your rare reliable ones. Besides, you're no fool. It may be a story that sounds unbelievable on its own, but you know a pattern when you see one. If there is some kind of miracle healer, it's likely a dragon...just a matter of confirming if there's a 'miracle healer' at all.

So, first thing. You ought to wander around and ask questions. While you're out, you might as well sell this whole 'peddler' persona...this surplus of crap you're hauling around might as well earn you some money.

The only thing, as always, is what to do with the runt...

[] The runt can stay here.

[] The runt can come with you.

As is standard procedure, you will in fact be the runt.

[X] The runt can stay here.

Inndrasil? Clever name.

They aren't the only ones INN the joke however!

Look like a tie, folks
I'm getting on a plane tomorrow and may be occupied for a while after that, but I'm gonna mention this now so that whenever I next get time to slam out an update, I'm actually able to :V

I would much rather have the tie broken, that's why I mention ties instead of picking at random and writing
:V
