The Legend of Ganondorf: Breath of the Desert's Chosen (LoZ AU)

The ability to speak, obviously. Everyone knows no Links can talk. Except for that one, but we don't talk about that one.

To be clear, Ganondorf asking if there's another way in is asking if they can also use that way, right? Or is it just checking in that she does, indeed, have another way in (and maybe setting up a meeting in the near future)?

Right now, I don't think it'd too useful to use that other way in. We're here on official business, after all. Could be useful for the future, but not enough that it'll sway me.

[X] "Farewell, then. When we meet again."

On a different note, I'm wondering who the friend Linkle is talking about is. My first thought was that she was not, in fact, directly lying, but was somehow talking about Fi, but I don't think that's the case. Saria, maybe, given that they seem to be based on OoT Link to some extent.
Ganondorf is indeed contemplating the just in case of having to invade the castle one day.

[x] "Come. I would think my word has enough sway for this."
[X] "Farewell, then. When we meet again."

We've gained pretty valuable intel so far. Nobody is curious about how deep the split actually is?

[X] "… Alas… you know another way in?"

Having a route to sneak in may prove helpful later. I'm also interested in getting a better bead on what this little gremlin's deal is.

[X] "Farewell, then. When we meet again."
[X] "… Alas… you know another way in?"

We're Gerudo, and we'd be showing up with a known, unwanted, element. That's to be stopped at the gates. We'd be blowing any credit we have left to get Linkle in on our word. But Linkle will still be present, and that's really all that matters. And since there's no write in, we can't even offer Linkle a disguise to help slip past the gate with us. Not, that I'd expect we kept extra wear for occasions.

[X] "Farewell, then. When we meet again."

I'd like to ask about the other way in, but we definitely have to separate here.

Huh. Interesting.

Linkle doesn't need to sleep, and never grows tired - can always keep going.

Linkle eats, after a fashion, but people never actually see her eat - as though, more than doing it when they aren't looking, they can't look where she eats. As though she does it in an instant.

Linkle can only speak in short, clipped quieries and responses. Rudimentary things that barely give hints of the "shape" of her. This is, of course, because she barely knows Hylian, but it is also because...

...well. Sleeps only if she wants to, eats on the pause screen, can only speak in dialogue trees. Cuts through armies like they were, ah... you get what I'm saying, right?

She's a video game protagonist, is what I'm driving at.

[X] "… Alas… you know another way in?"
-[X] "Farewell, then. When we meet again."

Ask about the other way, but we don't need to use it right now.

Slow as I may be. I live.

Round 1 - Hyrule Castle
The transformation into the form of the lizards lasted a bit over twenty-four hours. Twenty-four hours of misery, in which Riju's mind refused to obey its natural course. The memories of the time were alien, and she direly wished to forget them, along with the now emptied contents of her stomach in the river where the fish could chum on it.

At least she could take comfort in that Uraba had not fared better.

"If that is how the lizards live, then I don't understand how they were once our equals." She finally commented, chest heaving as she drew deep breaths. The sun had begun to make its way to the peek of the sky. The light had filled the valleys and canyons that separated the desert from the lands of the Zora. "How do they think?"

"It's not for us to know." Riju surmised. "We must seem equally alien." After all, while they had been in the shape of the lizards, they had still understood the plan. Perhaps interpreted it differently, but the plan had been first and foremost in Riju's mind. "It seems the village has been discovered."

"Funeral pyres?"

"Aye." In the distance, Riju could see the small columns of smoke that bespoke the pyres favoured by Hylians. "I thought they'd bury them."

"If its a scouting party, they won't take the time." Uraba explained. "Too many barbarian incursions. The Hylians have turned from the rites of the dead." Her distaste was evident on her voice. Her opinion on the wrongness of such was clear. "We must move. We cannot be found here."

"And we won't." Riju nodded, glancing at the dirty lizard blade that she'd dropped nary seven paces away. She wished her at the time lizard brain had thought to leave the blade behind, but instead she had brought it with her. "There's no helping it. We need Goro."

"You intend for him to transform the blade?"

"In its current shape, its spirit is evidence. I dare not leave it to rust." Riju retorted. "It shall have to accompany us. Where are the travel packs? Surely we can conceal it?"

"… Aye. Give me some time. We shall hide it within the walking staff." Uraba nodded, reaching for her knife. "I will whittle it now."

It made Riju feel a little better, even if the situation was her fault to begin with.

"Farewell, then, Linkle. When we meet again."

"Meet soon."

"I would think so." Our parting was amicable, the forest girl and I. I wasn't sure if Linkle entirely understood what a grudge was, for she did not seem too bothered to part with us. It would likely be very soon indeed, after all, for I did not believe for a moment she would not end up inside Hyrule Castle Town. She just did not intend to do so legally.

Still, whatever did she do to get thrown out? In her words, it was just a cuccoo, and I could not think of a single thing involving a cuccoo that would garner such a reaction. Were the Hylians truly so callous, or-

"Highness." Urbosa's words returned me to reality. "Should we keep an-"

"Nay. She will show up soon enough. We need not pay her mind for the moment." My voice was stern, just in case my sisters got some ideas of acting alone. "Besides, we should not allow curiosity override common sense. Come." I started to walk forward. With purpose, dignity, as much poise as I could manage. In some ways, the marge to the lowered drawbridge of Castle Town was almost as bad as the day of my coronation.

The Castle Town, known abroad as Castle Hylia, was a grand structure, a fortress of stone hewn from the mountains surrounding the Temple of Hylia from ancient times. Some called it the home of the Temple of Light, others called it the castle that sheltered the Temple of Time. I knew it by neither of these. My first recollection of learning of the Hyrule Castle Town came from Kotake's mouth. The bastion of Nayru, of those of wisdom and magic.

My sisters fell into step behind me. The soldiers standing guard at the bridge were slow to act, lethargic. This place was relatively safe and they could afford sloth in that safety. By the time they had paid enough attention to realise that we were not a mere caravan of merchants, we were nary ten paces away.

"Halt! I said halt!" The guards were garbed in chain mail, plates of steel covering their breasts and extremities. I could see the crest of Hyrule, that sort of bird emblazoned inside a circle and the three golden triangles beneath, on their breastplates and their shield. Spear points were aimed at us, yet I feared them not. "What business have you!? These times are trying a-"

"Point your steel elsewhere, boy, before I cut it from your fingers!" Urbosa's voice twisted into a snarl immediately. I resisted the urge to sigh. The guards had raised arms to cover for their sloth, and my sisters took it as provocation.

Alas, a diplomatic incident was not at the top of my things to do today. I could hear the murmurs, the whispers of steel as my sisters went for their blades. My hand clapped down on Urbosa's blade before it left its home.

"Please. Gentleman. Sisters. This is a misunderstanding." My voice was like velvet. Smooth. Almost corrupt, I noted in my head. "Guardsman, we are the envoys of the desert. We offer condolences in these trying times to her highness." I waved a hand calculatingly. There was no doubt that the guards had been derelict in their duty, yet if there were words to the effect of no visitors, well…

That would be problematic.

"Envoys? There are no envoys from the sand devils." Another Hylian spat at my words. Urbosa's eyes narrowed. Mine did not. One who had lost friends or family to us, no doubt. It was easy to forget that we were not friends, given the forest girl from yesterday. Yet if I lost my cool, well…

This entreaty would be for nothing.

"Caldwen, that's enough." Another Hylian. Caldwen's hands gripped his spear tighter. "Your name, envoy."

"Ganondorf VII. I assure you, I will be on the list."

A piece of me wished to cackle with delight at the look on the guards faces as they realised who their spears were pointed at. It did not take long for them to realise that I was, in fact, the boogeyman that they had been raised on. I do wonder what the Hylians said of my lineage these days?

There was a lot of swallowing and uncertainty. I was almost sure Caldwen would stab with his spear. It would be ineffective, given the excess shaking of his hands, but he may yet do it.

"What do we do?" The hushed whisper from the guards perked my ears. Indeed, I was correct, it would seem. There was a no visitors rule in place right now.

"Do you want to be the one to turn him away?"

"But-"

"There's nothing for it. Send for Impa." I presumed that one was the captain, a silver medallion hanging from his neck. He glanced at me, and seemed to understand that I had heard him. "Apologies, my lord. Her highness gave clear instructions during the mourning. I do not have the authority for this."

"Yet the gate is down."

"The Emerald Knights are due home today, with all respect. They are late by two hours."

Emerald Knights. I would have to ask Linkle of them. I had suspicions as to where they were. I motioned my sisters back a few paces. To keep the peace, if nothing else. Urbosa's eyes remained narrow, yet it was one of the younger warriors, Niva, who spoke first.

"They dare raise a blade against you, highness?"

"They speak without respect." That I was called a mere lord had not gone unnoticed by another of the warrior women. "They speak as high blood, but-"

"They have their traditions." I cut them off. This was not the place to deal with the Hylians lack of etiquette, whether or not it was warranted. "The Hylians claim from Death Mountain to Dragon's Copse. From their perspective, that is all I amount to." They were wrong, of course. My blood was no less noble or pure then that of the Hylian Kings, usurpers one and all in the days of the Wind Demon, but that was neither here nor there. All I needed for the moment was that my entourage did not skewer the Hylians for their impudence on the spot.

"The voe are insufferable." Urbosa muttered. "And a Shiekah. The indignity." Her voice remained low as she caught sight of another, a woman wrapped in pale purples and navies. Her garb was loose, reminding me almost of an acrobat or…

"Impa, I trust." I recognised the sharp, angular features. The woman, pale skinned and red eyes, was indeed one of the last inheritors of the blood of the Shiekah, the secret order and peoples of lore and death that inhabited the Kakariko region before Hyrule was founded. They were the hands of the King, or in this case, I suppose, Queen.

"Indeed. You are Ganondorf." A single glance at her confirmed my suspicions. I could smell the stink of death on her, and no doubt she smelled that of demons on me. We confirmed who the other was by merely being in each others presence. Her face twisted, not in disdain or disgust, but something else. "You are brave to show your face here, barbarian king."

"Barbarian king?" I raised an eyebrow. "My lady, if you intend to accuse me of wickedness and sorcery and deviousness besides, by all means. My line has done more then enough of all. However, I must ask you at least accuse me of something I have done."

"And you claim ignorance of the barbarians and your bokoblins raiding our countryside?"

"Alas, I can claim no responsibility. The bokoblin have not been our allies since before my birth. I assure you, if our entreaty goes well, then they will no longer be your issue."

"And if it does not?"

"They will still not be your issue, but for very different reasons." The sinister smile that crossed my lips made my point clear. "Still, my condolences for your troubles with the pig men. I will ensure they are removed from your borders." The edge to my voice hopefully made the deal for me. Let us in so that I can negotiate. We can help each other.

Impa just stared for a long moment.

"Captain, add them to the log."

"Yes, Impa."

"Follow me, Ganondorf. Try not to make a scene." How we could avoid such a thing, I wasn't sure, however Impa did not take long to turn and start walking. "Your kind is not welcome here, to be clear."

"And yours is?" Niva's voice cut out. I almost sighed. Almost. I'm proud that I caught myself. Even if I wanted to throttle Niva on the spot.

"The Shiekah are prized friends of the royal family." Impa answered. "You are correct, though. I am no more welcome then you overall." The answer was surprisingly blunt. Exceptionally so, even, as we walked the roads. The castle town had shockingly few within it. Yet I was sure it teemed with life, as if-

"It is a day of mourning." I muttered. "Everyone is inside."

"Yes." Respect for a fallen monarch. I could understand it to a degree. "Her Highness renews the wards and vows within the Temple. You will have to wait for her in the courtyard."

Wait? Well, that was something, at least…

[ ] Demand to see Zelda immediately. Such matters should not be made to wait.
[ ] Inquire as to the state of Hyrule.
[ ] Watch the streets. Linkle must be nearby.
[ ] Ask as to the recent tournament. Surely you could work out why Linkle had been thrown out.
[ ] Confer with the sisters and wait. There was no need to get too chummy with Impa.

[X] Watch the streets. Linkle must be nearby.

All the other options have the potential to increase suspicion towards us (I feel like many will view us talking amongst ourselves as plotting, and Impa will probably view every inquiry we make of her as a way to tease information for future raids or a full blown invasion), even in failure, and this way we can either get someone to vouch for us talk to us in a friendly manner, or we can get a look at how Hylian society is functioning directly. After all, observation is another method of gathering information.

[X] Inquire as to the state of Hyrule.

Has the risk of seeming to be getting information on their weaknesses (And to be fair, it partially would be), but it seems the most positive interaction we can have. I'd be more worried about asking about the tournament, considering how would we know about that.

[X] Inquire as to the state of Hyrule.

What Impa decides to say and what she decides not to say will be illuminating.
