That's not a hundred votes. I'll extend the same offer this time, though.
Kali Belladonna has betrayed you. That is the only explanation for her current behavior. There's certain no other reason, especially not that you forgot that, as a politician, Kali is perfectly capable of sitting next to a blood enemy without so much as a twitch. She smiles warmly. "Charmed."
Jacques Schnee takes her proffered hand and shakes it with only the slightest hesitation, but to the eyes of everyone present in the headmasters' box that tell was as clear as the day. His jovial greeting in response rings hollow. Headmasters of Huntsman academies are experts at picking up when people mask their emotions. It's a necessary skill, one required to ensure that you're not turning loose any graduates who have unproductive instabilities. Some such as miss Adel's drive for perfection and control, are key motivators to continually improve, but some need to be identified and ironed out, such as Blake Belladonna's tendency to flee rather than fight.
So it is that mister Schnee's attempt to mask his discomfort falls completely flat, but you're forced to ignore it because the slight is towards Kali. Presumably she ignores it because she doesn't want to make the man in charge of the world's near-monopoly on Dust distribution upset.
You miss the good old days, where a minor insult, at minimum, resulted in a spontaneous fight, damage to the venue, and oaths to take vengeance for their family's dishonor ...Or are you thinking of the trashy online novel that kept you up until two in the morning, last night? Sometimes it's hard to remember.
"It is gratifying to know that Blake is partnered with such a capable Huntress." Kali Belladonna says, smiling. "You must tell me about her training."
When Jacques starts prattling on about which private tutor instructed which subject during which time-frame you get bored and stop listening in. It's a few minutes early, but no one ever complains about their blood sports starting ahead of schedule, so you move to the microphone and address the masses. "The second round of the Vytal Festival tournament begins in two minutes, and I shall now draw the names of the participating team from the bowl of wisdom. Let the nature of this choice remind you that for Huntsman and Huntresses, so often there is no choice of what to do, only the choice of how to do it. This is the culmination of your training. It is the time to show that the power of humanity is never lost, only transferred to those younger. Look up, young Huntsmen, and see those whose efforts allow you to reach your current heights."
Conveniently, your box is the highest in the stadium. Eat your heart out on that implication, Salem.
The crowd eats it up, cheering and screaming as your double-sided words flatter them, but you notice down below that you selected duelists do not share their excitement. Mercury Black scoffs, and whispers something to his teammate, who nods while responding to miss Rose. James' Maiden seems too immersed in your words to properly respond.
"Team ME and team PC, proceed to the stadium."
You don't know much about miss Polendina's partner. She's one of Jimmy's picture-perfect soldiers, but you don't see anything on her that could be construed as a weapon other than the metal bracelet worn on her left arm. Perhaps it transforms into a wire whip? It's not large enough to hold a gun, in any case, so that's major style points missing. Her outfit is nice enough, though the blue poodle skirt's elegance clashes with her partner's workshop chic.
The randomized terrain of the arena sets itself to half tundra and half scrubland. Port and Oobleck explain how the two pieces of terrain could influence the match to come over the speaker. It's all extremely basic, but they know their audience. They're talking to the non-Huntsmen watching.
Leo shoves a box wrapped in brown paper under his seat as he scampers into the box. "Apologies for being um, late. Something came up." He says while settling into his seat.
"You're just in time." James says with a rare smile. "You didn't miss anything important."
Down on the field, the Atlesian team stands in the frozen tundra and Cinder Fall's plants on the baked earth of the scrubland.
Your old friend leans forward in his seat as the match begins, and Penny draws collapsible blades concealed within her clothing, floating them in a loose ring before her with her aerokinesis. Ciel steps behind her as Mercury and Emerald dash forward. You recall that both of them are close-range fighters, but the Maiden doesn't fling her blades forward. Instead they start to rotate. Inside their radius green light crackles, condenses, and finally bursts into roiling light as she channels raw elemental power.
"I instructed miss Polendina to put on a bit of a show." James says with a chuckle, and the orb shatters into curling arcs of energy. They carve through the ground and rake across the tundra, turning the battlefield from a flat plain into a demented spiderweb in the brief moment before she hiccups, and the magic fails.
"Her mastery of it could use some work." You comment as dryly as you can manage, but inside that facade you feel the hot glow of triumph. Forget Jacques -nothing could dampen this victory! All of Remnant just saw a Maiden's power, and yet...
Penny bends over, clutching her stomach, and her face slowly takes on color as green as her magic when her hiccups don't stop. Her blades falter mid-air, twitching as the sudden fit of hiccups increases in severity. Ciel gingerly puts her hand on Penny's back.
Of their opponents, Emerald lays on her side with her aura almost in the red, but Mercury pops up like an entirely unwelcome jack in the box, and resumes his headlong rush toward the convulsing Maiden.
Ciel Soleil steps between he and her teammate, and with a flick of the wrist her silver bracelet unravels into a long whip, the tip of which sparks with electricity. A quick and brutal fight follows, during which Mercury continually attempts to close the range and miss Soleil keeps him at bay with quick strikes, but all the while Penny's troubles continue, and beside you James grows more grim.
"A feedback loop?" He mutters, confused and concerned.
You watch as your triumphant victory takes on a bitter aftertaste. The cameras catch Penny's face, eyes wide and confused as she plasters her hands over her mouth in an effort to control her convulsions. It would be funny if she weren't so obviously distressed. At last her hiccups stop, just for a brief second. Her partner is distracted by the sudden change and her whip goes askance, letting Mercury slip inside and kick her out of the ring, but in that brief window of opportunity Penny sweeps out with her power and uses her swords to throw both Emerald and Mercury out of bounds after her.
The match ends with the result you wanted, and James hurries off to see to his Maiden, but it's a hollow victory at best. You need your Maiden to have a good match.
"I'll... be right back. I think I'm going to go check on my students." Leo says, and the perpetually nervous man leaves in a hurry.
Maybe you should leave too, while the arena gets checked out? Your students could use a pep talk to motivate them to do their best. You could try to work your way into Penny's favor, as well. Maybe you could find a quiet corner and call Raven on your scroll, to try and get her on reserve in case your newer Maiden fails to impress. Or... you could see what's in that box Leo brought. It's a mystery right now, and you've always been a sucker for mystery boxes.
