The Great Age of Piracy

IC Thread
(Always Accepting New Members)
Twenty years ago, Gol D. Roger, the infamous Pirate King, was captured and executed by the marines! With his last breath, he told the world of his treasure, One Piece, located at the end of the Grand Line! These words sparked the beginning of a revolution, the beginning of the Great Age of Piracy!

Our story begins at a place known only as "Grand Rock," a massive, artificial island located at the very beginning of the Grand Line. Constructed by the World Government to control the flow of Pirates into the Grand Line, Grand Rock is a testament to the power of the Marines...and also to the will of the Pirates who survive it.

You are a Pirate, or Marine, who has made their way through one of the Four Blues to Grand Rock. Your quest is up to you, but know this - it is a dangerous, treacherous world beyond this point, unlike anything you've ever seen before. To achieve your dreams, you must first prove yourself on the Grand Line!
Setup

This RP takes place in a One Piece AU where none of the canon characters, save Roger, exist. The Yonko, the Shichibukai, and the Admirals are all created and controlled by me, but if you want to work one into your character's backstory, ask me about it and we'll work something out.

There's no dice or stat system - everything is done freeform, but I reserve the right to veto any abilities that are overpowered or go against the "spirit" of the One Piece universe. If you're wondering whether something is acceptable, just ask. Chances are it'll be fine.

Every week or so I'll update a bounty board which tracks your characters' achievements and notoriety. Bounty is based off of participation and civility rather than in-character feats, so keep that in mind. Marines will receive medals instead of bounties - every three medals is a promotion. (This only applies to commissioned officers. NCOs receive an automatic promotion for every medal until they reach Ensign).

The rules are simple - follow the general rules of the site, and be polite and respectful to other players and to me. My decisions are final, but feel free to try and change my mind. And most importantly, have fun!

For character creation, your powers will be limited at the beginning. Remember, you are only at the beginning of the Grand Line. Some abilities are explicitly banned for now, but will open up as you progress.
Banned Abilities
Rokushiki
Haki
Logia Devil Fruits
Awakened Devil Fruits
Mythical Zoans
Ancient Zoans

Name: Feel free to include a nickname, or I can assign you one.

Faction: Marines or Pirates. If you're a Marine, include your rank here. (Starting Rank is capped at Lieutenant. Here is the wiki links to the Rank system.)

Age:

Appearance:
Descriptions or pictures accepted.

Personality: Feel free to be as in-depth as you want, but I need at least a few character traits. Bullet points are fine, D&D alignments are also useful.

History: Five sentences, minimum. The more you include, the easier it will be for me to create fun and exciting arcs for your character/crew.

Crew: Try to form crews before we begin and edit this information in later.

Boat: The name and description of your boat. Be reasonable, no massive galleys (yet).

Devil Fruit: See above for what Devil Fruits are banned. If you want to reserve a currently banned Devil Fruit, mention it to me.

Fighting Style: Include whatever weapons your character might use. Remember to be reasonable, nobody is good at everything.

*no Logia fruits*

:(

But I just wanted to be Mr. Evil Mcevilston, who's Ash-Ash Devil Fruit makes him super-weak to low temperatures...

Ah well, Backup Plan 1: Be The Jojo Vampire is now a thing.

For the weapon thing, would that still apply to someone that takes the Buki Buki no mi? since weapons would kinda be their thing? Or would learning and advancing in their weapons be how they invent new techniques?

*cracks knuckles* It's time.

Current idea is an old fisherman who recently got a Devil Fruit and wants to be a simple pirate who robs people without a lot of killing, anyone willing to work with them in their crew?

I'm mostly leaving Devil Fruit advancement up to the players - I trust you guys not to go overboard.

For the Buki Buki no mi specifically, I'd say that its user would be proficient with all the weapons they can "summon" but would be outmatched by a specialist with that weapon. So they'd be a good swordsman, but not as good as Zoro, a good marksman, but not as good as Ussop - it's the variety that makes them strong.

I'm Interested, current thoughts for a devil fruit would be Glass Glass fruit, which would be either a non intangible logia (original idea) or one of the pseudo logia paramecias and therefor might not be viable.

We actually do see an example of a "tangible logia" with Aokiji's Ice Ice Fruit - rather than avoiding the attack completely, Aokiji would be shattered and then reform. I imagine a Glass logia would work the same way. If that's the route you want to go, you can reserve it now and pick it up when the RP reaches an appropriate level.

If you'd rather go paramecia, a quick skim of the wiki shows two different types of "pseudo-logias." The first allows the user to generate their element but not transform their body into it (think Mr. 3's Wax Wax Fruit), while the second allows the user to do the opposite, transforming their body into a tangible element but not creating it outside their body (Jozu's unnamed diamond fruit). Either of these would be acceptable to start with.

There's actually
a Mirror Mirror Fruit — Mira Mira no Mi — similar to Mr. 3, it's making and controlling mirrors
Might be damn close to what you'd be looking for, @erlking

Posting my idea for a Fruit just to make sure it's okay:
A Paramecia, this fruit makes it so that any physical blows against the eater will be absorbed and sent out the soles of his feet, protecting them from things like punches, blades, and gunshots. Technically, they can't be cut by blades or have their bones broken by blunt force, but any amount of trauma that overwhelms them, which at this point would be a hit from a cannonball or more, will overload them and paralyze them for at least a few minutes. While the fruit protects them from normal hits, things like fire or poison can kill them just as easily as anyone else, and against someone physically stronger than them they could just be man handled and then tied up with rope.

Hmm...

Well, my first idea is a trick-shooting gunslinger who carries a few kinds of special bullets. Could be a pirate captain or just a regular pirate, I'm not too fussy.

As a general thing, being safe from all of those things doesn't really make sense — stabs / blades at least shouldn't be able to be shot out of your feet. With DFs usually the forces make sense and/or line up, and stomping is blunt force. Otherwise I don't really see a problem...? My opinion of course, but still...

...considering nobody in canon lives except for Gold Roger, I'm of the opinion that people really shouldn't have to make up powers and just have standard ones if you're going to start with one. Obviously @Gally knows what ones are off-limits because he's using them (which should probably be kept to PMs I suppose) but *shrug*

It's not so much that stabs are being sent out his feet as the force behind the swing is. So say someone swings a sword at him, the amount of momentum behind it goes out his feet. Obviously since there's a lot less momentum behind a cutting weapon than one for smashing it wouldn't do as much as if he were hit by a hammer.

I like the idea but I think negating all physical force is a little overpowered for where the characters are now. If you reduce it to only blunt attacks, you can power it up to cutting attacks later.

I encourage people to make up their own Devil Fruits, since canon only scratches the surface of what is possible. For NPCs I have some ideas about fruits I'll want to use, but I'm letting players get first dibs and building my plans around them.

@Gally : So, if you can't guess, I'm currently thinking of making a non-Devil-Fruit-using character, instead focusing on raw martial prowess (TRAINING MAKES YOU STRONG!). I'm leaning weapon-user, not unlike Zoro, but not just copying him, either. I'm still torn on the exact style, though, so I'm open to suggestions, as well as input on things like "should I make up special moves yet or not".

So what exactly is an 'awakened' devil fruit anyway?

(and would we potentially get the chance to do it)

That's awesome! Devil Fruits are great but I think one of the best parts of One Piece is how it allows "normal" people to succeed. If you want some IC inspiration I have a few ideas for Admiral/Yonko/Shichibukai without Devil Fruits, so just ask.

Pretty much any fighting style will work, so I don't want to limit your options. It's really just something you'd enjoy writing, so have fun with it.

As for special moves, the characters are at the point where they should have a decent repertoire, but I'm not requiring you to come up with all your abilities now. Half the fun of One Piece is seeing the characters whip out new abilities mid-battle.

We don't know a lot about awakened Devil Fruits, but it's basically an "evolution" of the fruit which expands their powers. Doflamingo's fruit was awakened, and it allowed him to turn the environment around him into strings, iirc.

Basically it's a big power up that won't come into play until the New World. But once your characters are at that level and we know more about them, then yes, I'd be open to it.

Closest anyone can guess is that your power being awakened has a different meaning depending on the type of Devil Fruit

We know that Awakened Zoans include the Five Jailers of Impel Down who are incredibly tough and get up from injuries incredibly quickly, while Awakened Paramecia like Doflamingo can turn their physical environment into their element as if a pseudo-Logia (Luffy's in theory would make the rest of the environment as rubber as he is, for an alternate example)

No one knows 'bout Logia, but it's a good thing we aren't getting that to start :V

Oh man, I love One Piece, but I have like, no ideas right now. Expect something sometime tomorrow, I suppose, but for right now I'm just expressing interest.
