Long, long ago, before time had meaning, the world was grey, shrouded in fog. There was nothing at all but rocks, Archtrees, and motionless Dragons. There was no light, no darkness, no change at all. Simply「That which is」forever and for all time.

But one day, the first day, there was a change. Light and Dark, Life and Death, in a word: Disparity. Things were not always the same. Things could change. From the First Flame, roaring to life in this first changing moment, all things we have experienced flow. And from the new darkness came people. Four of the greatest found the Souls of Lords within the Flame.

Gwyn, lord of Sunlight, the Witch of Izilith, Nito, First of the Dead, and the Furitive Pygmy... All four of them gained something impossible to measure, and with it, they challenged the dragons. Gwyn's mighty bolts peeled apart their stone scales, the Witch of Izilith burned all to ash, and Nito unleashed a miasma of death and decay, weathering them to ash.

The first war was not a simple one, however, even with these new powers. The dragons were the last shred of resistance to disparity. Even as they finally moved, they, at their core, were unchanging. Each dragon had an incredible resistance to a change as permanent as death, requiring a significant part of a Lord's effort. And their numbers... Suffice to say the war went on for a long time.

So long, in fact, that the Lords found themselves no longer alone at the end of it, Gwyn least of all. An entire army of elite knights learned from him, throwing lighting in imitation of his own greater bolts. A son was born, inheriting lightning just as powerful as his own. Four knights distinguished themselves above all others, earning fragments of Gwyn's own soul.

The others had not so many champions, but still grew in number. The Witch of Izilith had seven daughters, sorcerers of the Flame capable of burning entire landscapes down when working together. The Furitive Pygmy may not have had the strength of the other Lords, but his descendants became more numerous than the rest of the soldiers combined. And every man and woman that died rose once again to join Nito.

With the betrayal of Seath the Scaleless, the fate of the dragons was sealed. Some lived on for quite a while, but their time was over.

And now, centuries in the future, it seems the time of the Lords is fading as well. The Fire fades, and all the efforts of the Lords seem unable to stop it. Their land is but a legend, their fight spoken of as a story. And even the kingdoms of man are falling now...

For some reason, Nito does not administer the deaths of many. Instead, when they die, they are branded with a mark, the Darksign. They come back to life, as if nothing happened at all, only... Their Humanity, that which makes them human, drains away with every death. When it's gone, they are as well, but their bodies, mindless Hollows, keep raising.

These Hollows, with all their former lives' skill at arms, attack everyone they see until they're put down, killing more and turning more to Hollows. Truly, if this was all they were, they would be a grave threat, but unfortunately, it isn't. No, the most dire fact about them was that they didn't stop rising from their deaths. This unstoppable tide has destroyed kingdoms, which frantically searched for a solution.

Which leads to this place. An asylum, filled with Undead, to become Hollows. Even if they can't be killed, here, they're no one's problem. There is no escape from this place, none a mindless Hollow can find.

And so you sit, in a cell, to wait for the end of days. Or perhaps not? One day, an unchanging cell gets a new addition: A key, falling from the bars covering part of the roof. A glance shows a knight, dressed in armor more decorated than the rank-and-file of most. Still, whoever they are, they've handed you your chance at escape. Now, the only question:

Who are you?

Name:
[] What, you expect me to give you an option that isn't a Write-in?

Equipment:
[] Another write-in. Go wild. So long as you're not too ridiculous, I'm fine with accepting things other than the standard classes. Remember that this includes armor, weapon, items, rings, etc. If you don't list a weapon, I'm going to leave you with your bare hands.inb4 Legend

Ability focus:
[] Strong
[] Dextrous
[] Damage dealing
[] Sniping
[] Tanking
[] Dodging
[] Sorceries
[] Miracles
[] Pyromancy
[] Spells in general
[] Write-in. We're not gonna be exact levels unless you want to be. If you want this quest to use exact levels, tell me. Otherwise, just generally what you're good at, how you fight, etc.

History:
[] Knight
[] Traveller
[] Dragon School Sorcerer
[] Footsoldier
[] Cleric (What religion?)
[] Write-in. Go wild. Heck, try to convince me to let you be a canon character if you want. Try to be a little more detailed than these, though.

Alright. As the only half-applicable vote, please look at the edits to the History and Equipment write-in options if you don't want to be punching people instead of stabbing.

Also, I'm gonna need a sensible reason why Ornstein ended up in a cell of the Undead Asylum instead of dead. Feel free to twist canon a bit, but it has to be sensible.
