Turn 9:
Morgan Blackhand watched you from across the rooftop, his gaze unreadable beneath the dim red glow of Night City's skyline. He had the presence of a man who had seen too much, killed too many, and still walked the earth with purpose. The way he stood, arms crossed, weight perfectly balanced, made it clear—he wasn't here to waste time.
You exhaled, leaning back against the AC unit, the metal cool against your spine. "So," you said, voice steady despite the adrenaline still buzzing in your veins, "are you gonna take me to Militech?" You shot him a look, half challenge, half resignation. "Make me work for them?"
Blackhand didn't answer right away. He just sighed, straightening up, the weight of a decision pressing into his shoulders. Then, finally, he shook his head.
"No."
That single word didn't bring relief. If anything, it unsettled you even more. Because it meant he had something else in mind—something unpredictable, something you weren't prepared for.
You narrowed your eyes. "Then what do you want?"
Blackhand studied you for a moment before finally speaking. "So… you're the one who built all those weapons that saved your friends. And the armor that let you walk into the belly of the beast—Arasaka itself—without thinking about the consequences."
You gave a small shrug. "I was more dragged into it."
Blackhand smirked, just a flicker of amusement before his expression hardened again. "Doesn't change the facts." He took a step closer, his voice dropping into something firm and final. "I need a weapon."
That caught your attention. "What kind?"
"If your craftsmanship is as good as they say, I want something that can handle my kind of work."
You nodded, already running through blueprints in your head. "Alright. Details?"
"Combat rifle. Chambered in either .30-06 or 7.62 NATO. Self-cleaning, fully customizable."
You exhaled, already doing the mental math on materials, weight, recoil control. "Fire rate?"
"Single-shot, three-round burst, and full auto," he answered without hesitation.
"Scope, sights?"
"Total modification capability."
"Stock material? Wood, polymer? You want to base it on an existing frame—Armalite platform, AK—"
"Completely custom," he interrupted. "Something new. Something no one's seen before." His eyes locked onto yours. "Can you do it?"
You grinned, the challenge setting a fire in your blood. "Hell yeah. But it's gonna take me some time."
Blackhand's expression didn't shift. "Then I suggest you work fast."
He turned, looking out over the city, the neon lights reflecting in his cybernetic hand. "Because sooner or later, someone's gonna come knocking for you. And when they do, you're gonna want to be holding something very fucking special."
----------------------------
Your mother stood in the lobby, her presence like a storm cloud darkening the sterile corporate lighting. You remained seated, casually sprawled across the worn leather couch, watching her with a bemused smirk. She stood stiff and poised, a perfect Arasaka executive, yet beneath her cold exterior, you could see the cracks.
She wasted no time. "You stole the building?"
You leaned back, stretching your arms over the backrest. "No," you said smoothly. "That was Arasaka's own stupidity, trying to throw tenants out. Night City stole the building, and even the great Arasaka Corporation can't bury something that blatantly illegal—not here, not in this city."
Her lips thinned. "You are coming back to Japan."
You chuckled, shaking your head. "No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are." Her voice was sharp, commanding. "I am still your mother, and you are still a minor."
"Perhaps," you admitted, "but I seem to recall a certain contract I signed with Father… a very interesting thing. Let's pull it up, shall we?"
You grabbed the remote and flicked it toward the television. The screen blinked to life, displaying a scrolling contract, moving down like the opening crawl of an old Star Wars film. Line after line passed until it stopped on one particular clause, highlighted in stark white text.
Emancipated from parental authority.
You turned to look at her, relishing the way her face twisted from calculated control to seething rage.
"Father emancipated me," you said, voice laced with mock politeness. "In addition to a very generous set of perks that will activate once I turn eighteen."
"You little bastard—" she hissed, but then she reached into her coat, pulling out a sleek, matte-black remote. The moment her thumb pressed down, her expression flickered with certainty.
And then nothing happened.
You grinned, tilting your head. "Ah… that was supposed to be the doll chip you had installed in my head, wasn't it? The one I removed when Father told me about it?" You clucked your tongue. "The one that would make me the perfect little obedient son? Smiling, nodding, following you back into slavery?"
Her hand trembled slightly, her composure cracking as she stared at the useless remote.
You rose to your feet, slow and deliberate, drawing your pistol with a practiced ease. The click of the safety going off filled the silence between you.
"You never had control over me," you said, voice low, cold. "You left me. You left me alone for so long, I don't even consider you anything more than a genetic donor."
Her nostrils flared. "I did what was best for—"
"Who in their right fucking mind," you interrupted, stepping closer, "sends their own child halfway across the world, alone, to live in an apartment in a crime-ridden, corpo-run, festering shithole with a stranger that was told to kill you if you didn't obey them!?"
She didn't answer.
You exhaled, shaking your head. "But you know what?" you said, tilting your gun slightly, tapping the barrel against your temple like you were considering something. "I should thank you. Because out here, I learned who I really am. I learned what the world actually is. And I learned what I want to be."
You smiled—a slow, dangerous thing.
"So now, you're going to turn around and walk out of my building before I exercise my legal right to blow your fucking brains out."
For a moment, she said nothing, her chest rising and falling with shallow, controlled breaths. And then, unable to contain it, she let out a sound—a furious, guttural noise that wasn't quite a scream but carried the weight of complete and utter defeat.
"This is not over—"
"Yes, it is," you cut her off, voice devoid of warmth. "If you ever truly loved me, you'd accept what's happened. And if you're smart, you'll pray that as I grow older, I find it in myself to forgive you, rather than hold a grudge that will end with you dying."
Her glare burned into you for one long, lingering moment before she turned sharply on her heel and stalked toward the exit.
And just like that, she was gone.
