Urgh. You didn't really want to talk to Ben, especially not now, but...
You sent him a quick reply back, then glanced out your window. Outside, cars rolled by on the street, and there was the distant noise of the highway carrying over the city. That'd probably be the time to hit the bots, while they were being moved and security was minimized. Hell, there might not even be a driver.
---
You met Ben at his locker. He was a well-built young man, brown hair and a strong jaw. You used to have a lot of complicated resentment and jealousy towards him, not just for dating the girl you'd been crushing on since day one of high school, but because he embodied this easy masculinity that you couldn't fake, back when that was a thing you were trying to do. But for some reason, in this interaction, he felt so very small, and you felt so very big.
You reflected on that a moment. Part of it was stance, yes, he was almost cringing, clearly uncomfortable, perhaps even a little intimidated. You were frustrated that you were here talking to him instead of with your girlfriend. You wondered how much of it was also the knowledge that, despite your respective builds, you were far stronger than him. And considering the summer May was supposed to have had, from what Felica said... that difference may well be meaningful.
"
Don't fight your girlfriend's ex. For one thing, it's a stupid masculine impulse you should be over. For another, she's not going to appreciate it." Athena whispered in your ear.
You weren't going to
fight your girlfriend's ex. For one thing, it wouldn't be a fight, but... also that other stuff. You weren't going to let your ego get in the way that much.
You also realized, as you got closer, that you were actually taller than him. An inch taller, at least. You'd always imagined he'd have to be taller than you. You'd never gotten close enough to see it wasn't the case.
"What do you want, Reilly?" you asked, a bit short.
"I... I just wanted to know how May was doing." he said, hands in his pockets, wincing with each word. "I... feel real shit and I just..."
The
fuck? Hell no, you weren't going to be some kind of channel for Ben to wiggle back into May's life.
"Cool. Bye." you said, turning on your heel. You felt his hand on your shoulder and it took
considerable willpower not to turn around swinging. "Don't touch me."
"I-, come on, please, I just wanna know if she's okay." he said, still touching you. Very slowly, very restrained, you grabbed his wrist with your good hand and pulled it away, holding tight. The look of
terror in his eyes as he realized how easily you were overpowering him was delightful.
"What did you do to her, Reilly?" you asked.
"I didn't do anything, I just want... come on, man!" he protested.
"Don't call me that. What did you do." you repeated. You were ready for the absolute worst answer.
"
Let go of him, Liv."
You released his arm and he pressed himself against his locker, looking haunted. A few people were glancing your way, and they stopped the moment you looked at them.
"Nothing, we had a stupid... I was an idiot. I was a huge idiot." he muttered. "I made a mistake."
"
... okay I'm not liking any of these words but please don't kill him." Athena said.
"Elaborate."
"I don't know! I seriously actually don't! Everything was nice and good and then she just flipped out, said I didn't love her, said I
betrayed her... I don't know what the hell. I thought she like, hit her head or something. I just want to make sure she's okay. That she hasn't done it to you, too." he explained, babbling out the words in the rapid-fire flood. "I just... be careful. You've been thought a lot, I don't want you getting hurt."
Whoa what.
"... Okay. Thanks Ben." you said numbly.
