Youko II
Keep talking with Youko.
- Clarify that you aren't local, you found this world through the Gate, and found similarities to your own, which you're investigating.

You watch Youko work on calming herself down for a moment before taking out your notebook and writing down some notes and impressions, both from Youko and from the shrine. She looks a bit calmer by the time you finish, so you put the notebook away and look at her. "I should clarify something, I think. I'm not from this Japan. I'm from another world entirely, and this world's similarities to my own led me to do some exploration." Youko frowns at you, and waves for Hana to come closer; the girl scoots across the bed and snuggles against her grandmother.

"Similarities? Like what?" You grin and shrug.

"Oh, things like language, locations, names – things like that. But there are differences, and youkai are the biggest one. In my world, around … I think it was Meiji Eighteen, when Gensokyo was separated from the rest of the world. Youkai could not thrive, could not survive in a world that did not believe in them, and so we locked ourselves away in a sealed world. Which led to my investigating your family, because the … 'entrance,' I suppose, to Gensokyo, was at the Hakurei Shrine, and the priests there kept the Barrier stable and ensured that the humans and youkai had – well, not peace, exactly, but a stable life. And so I investigated the Hakurei Shrine of this world, and then tried to find other places where a Gensokyo could be or tengu might be lairing, but …." You trail off, then shrug. "So, Youko, I am curious about something: have you seen any youkai here tonight, apart from myself? Or in the past couple days, really?" After all, the youkai of this world might more resemble the gods of Falmart than youkai as you know them: beings of spirit, without a body. She watches you for several long seconds, her hand stroking Hana's hair, then slowly looks around the room, staring at the walls and corners and floor and ceiling, before finally settling on a spot an arm's length from your head.

"... I cannot see any other youkai right now. I have not seen any youkai for almost a week, now." She's talking almost more to herself than to you, and you nod, wondering if she's actually telling the truth; you can't sense anything, but that's hardly a guarantee of things. Her eyes snap back to focusing on you. "So you left your world and came to ours to explore?" Your grin returns and you shake your head.

"Oh, no; your world is … not exactly incidental, but it's not the primary target of my investigation. Have you heard about the, mm, incident occurring to the east?" You gesture vaguely toward the Gate and Youko snorts.

"I heard something about those stupid 'cosplayers' rioting, and then it became serious enough that the staff ran away after telling any patients who wanted to leave that they could call their families and have them pick them up." Hana's head jerks up and she smiles widely.

"Grandmother! You could come back to the shrine! Father knows youkai are real now, so …." She trails off, withering under her grandmother's gaze, and you clear your throat to return her attention to you.

"Your other grandchildren could use training, and perhaps you can test Hana to see if she has an ability I couldn't test for. But, in any case, that 'riot' was actually an army invading Japan from another world. I was investigating that world for its suitability for youkai to live in." Youko's features darken as you tell her about Falmart.

"And of course the youkai aren't going to help Japan this time, either," she spits viciously. Curious. Is that the event she was referring to? There was a war, you remember, but you'll have to see if you can find any other information about what happened. Maybe Patchouli will know something …. Still, you sigh and shake your head, leaning back against the wall, and study your wings.

"I don't think Japan needs the help. I doubt there were more than a hundred thousand invaders to begin with, and their flying reptiles are outmatched by the flying machines I've seen. Edo Castle is under siege, but even if Japan didn't have a thousand years of technological advantages I wouldn't consider it likely for it to fall before a proper military response can occur. Men in metal armor with swords and bows just don't fare well against firearms." Youko still doesn't look happy about your refusal to help, but the sheer hostility is gone. She starts to respond, then chokes it down after a few seconds and shakes her head. Before she can work up the nerve to try again, though, you hear a sound approach the building and walk over to the window. One of those small flying machines, although this one isn't as sleek as the weapon-bearing ones, and of course doesn't seem to have any weapons. It seems to circle the building, stopping in front. Youko chuckles, and after a moment of you frowning at her she bursts into real laughter, at least until Hana shakes her shoulder worriedly. She shakes her head and pats her granddaughter reassuringly before looking at you.

"Tengu – Aya. Did you do something improper while you were here?" You cock your head, but Hana nods excitedly.

"Yeah! Some of the doors were locked, so she opened them!" Youko's mirth fades, leaving her with a conflicted look on her face as she apparently realizes that you didn't open them with a key. "Um, Grandmother? Is something wrong?" You take a peek down the hallway, but no one has arrived yet, if they even know what floor to find you on; really, if you thought there would be police coming here you would have taken a bit more care – how did they know to come, anyway? Do the patients here have phones they can use, or is there some kind of automatic signal sent out?

… Well, you're still not as foolish as Hatate! Honestly, that girl, going out in public the way she did. Youko's long silence worries Hana, and she looks back and forth between you and her grandmother. You'll be fine, of course, but should you do something about Youko and Hana? It would be a bit of a shame if something happened to them, especially Youko, because if youkai do end up moving to Falmart, she may well be able to serve as an intermediary if the Gate stays open. "E-Excuse me." Your head whips around as the voice calls out through the hall and room … from the ceiling? "This is the police. Would the criminal please come down to the main desk and give themselves up quietly?" You blink, then your wings puff in indignation as Youko cackles. The nerve! Calling you a criminal! Hana still looks a bit worried, especially now that the police have actually asked you to give yourself up. The nerve!

What do you do?

[ ] Take Hana and Youko back to the Hakurei Shrine.

- [ ] Then go bar-crawling.

[ ] Other?

Is Youko seriously salty abouy Youkai not fighting Imperial Japans war for them? Because wow, that's messed up on so many levels.

But, if she can teach her grandkids, then it's very much worth investing in their development. Anything that gets people to believe in Youkai can only make this place more hospitable, on both sides of the Gate. That's when the fun will really start.

[X] Take Hana and Youko back to the Hakurei Shrine.
- [X] Then go bar-crawling.

Lets stir the pot some more. It's one thing for a bird person to show off on the internet, it's quite another to be in the path of their pub-crawl. Again, let's start ramping up that belief. People already are thinking magic and fantasy are real, now let's get them thinking that it's not just something that only exists in some other dimension, that their homegrown fantasies are just as real. Maybe they never noticed, maybe the fresh spark of magic allowed them to return, whatever floats their boat. In fact, as many theories as they can come up with. The more ideas, the more they talk about it, the more belief there is.

On the one hand, yes it is; on the other, she was ~8-10-ish or so when the war ended, so it's more hate and pain from the bombs and a few years of near-starvation because of the messed-up supply situation. (Like, I've never seen Grave of the Fireflies and don't really want to.) Like many people, she doesn't really care that much about people outside her personal sphere, so she doesn't really care about whether or not youkai helped with the war effort outside Japan (except a bit of bitterness for not protecting her family members who were fighting); what she hates is that she could see youkai who didn't help and didn't care that 'their people' were occupied and starving.

Like, she's still a very conservative individual and she doesn't actually believe that Japan did anything wrong; she's upset that gods and youkai didn't soften the effects of defeat.

Seems from the narration the local Youkai were also dying from lack of belief, interacting more and more tenously until they couldn't even touch stuff anymore, just appear to spiritually sensitive people as a figment.

Finding Hatate
Have the police escort Hana and Youko back to Hakurei Shrine, then go deal with Hatate.

You scowl at the ceiling for a moment, then turn back to Youko. "Can you walk, or do you need assistance?"

"Peh! I'm old, not incapable," she grouches as she swings her legs off the bed and carefully starts to stand. Hana hops off and scurries next to her grandmother to help get her feet in the fuzzy slippers next to the bed. "I hope you are not planning on counting us as part of your criminal behavior!" You turn up the brightness on your smile.

"Actually, I was going to have the police take you back to the shrine," you say, and Youko stiffens, glaring at you. "The children need a teacher, and if other youkai do want to visit this world for a taste of a familiar culture, it would be better for a talented priestess to actually be at a shrine instead of sinking into her pity in a hospital." Hana, frightened again by the tension between you and her grandmother, stays hunched over for a moment before Youko looks away and carefully reaches down to touch her shoulder.

"There, there, Hana, it is alright. And … if Aoi can sense things as well, I should be there to help her. Your brother – well, if he has changed his mind, I will teach him, but I suspect he will continue to reject his calling." Hana stands up and gives Youko a hug, and you lead the way to the stairs.

"Um, Miss Aya? Can we take the elevator?" You look back as Hana points at a solid door across from the staircase. Oh, right, if Youko is having trouble walking, then an easier method of travel might be better.

"Do you know what an elevator is, Aya?" Your answering smile is in no way malicious.

"It's a device for transporting cargo vertically, as I understand it. But Hana has a point, since the next best way to get you downstairs would be for me to carry you." You withdraw your wings, just to stave off any more objections, and smile at Youko's grimace. Hana decides to ignore the exchange and presses a button next to the elevator. You look down the hall, wondering if the other patients are staying here of their own will, or if their families wouldn't – or couldn't – take them in. How many people are even in this building, anyway? The door to the elevator opens, and the three of you step in. Hana presses another button to take you down, and when the doors open you see a uniformed young man waiting by the stairs. He smiles as you start to walk out.

"Ah, thank you! It is a shame that you damaged public property during a crisis like this, but I am gla~...." His jaw hangs open mid-word as you flourish your wings, and he stumbles back against the steps when you wink at him, eyes wide. You turn toward the entrance, and another officer walks forward cautiously, sidearm held in trembling hands. His eyes widen when he sees you and he freezes.

"Hello! It's a wonderful evening, don't you think? These nice ladies are priestesses at the Hakurei Shrine. Take them to their home." You gesture to the door as Youko and Hana shuffle to your side. You clear your throat and the young man awkwardly holsters his weapon before hurrying over to Youko's side.

"Ah, M-Miss Priestess, p-please allow me to assist you!" You walk ahead to the flying machine, its thin wings motionless for the moment. The pilots stare at you as you walk up to the door.

"Good evening! You are going to take the people who come out to the Hakurei Shrine." The one closer to you just keeps staring, but the one on the right nods and takes the large pads off his head.

"Of course, Miss Tengu. May I get permission from my superior?" You make a show of thinking it over, then nod.

"Of course you may tell your superior that you will be making a detour, I understand." You continue smiling as the pilot nods jerkily before replacing his headgear. You're distracted from his half of the conversation – most of which appears to be spent informing his superior that he's receiving instructions from a tengu – by the arrival of the priestesses and Hana's delighted squealing. Perhaps she's taken a liking to flight.

"Are you coming with us, Aya?" You shake your head at Youko's question, and Hana pouts.

"I need to go talk with Hatate, actually. I don't suppose you know where my companion is, Officer?" The second officer, clearly awed by your presence, nods and politely informs you that she's currently in the Koenji shopping district in Suginami, which Hana helpfully tells you is north of here. You thank them, then turn to the pilots, who bow and apologize for the wait. You give them a polite bow in response, then float into the air above them and start heading for Hatate. You find what is certainly a shopping district fairly easily, and as you land on one of the signs you notice people noticing you. It's a bit higher profile than you'd prefer for an investigation … but then, Hatate really doesn't seem to get some things, and if she's actually willingly going into groups of people, then it's definitely a step up from not wanting to go anywhere near a moderately large concentration of humans. You close your eyes and draw the wind toward you, quickly but gently, and listen. So many useless subjects – people on dates, people talking about the invasion, people complaining about prices or certain things not being here – but there are threads you want. People talking about the tengu, people questioning whether or not she's a 'cosplayer,' people talking about where she is. You step forward and drop to the ground floor, slowing for the last meter so you don't cause too much fuss, and walk calmly through the crowd of people; some of them are in shock, others still recovering from what they thought was a suicide, and others still seem excited to see you. You're not sure if you like the looks you're getting, though; hardly anyone seems to fear you, which really was the default response when a tengu showed up. Sure, in Gensokyo you're just 'that reporter,' but the few times you've been to the Village without disguising yourself, people were properly deferential. Here, you're just a novelty – something to spark up the conversation, or to tell their friends and family when they get home.

You walk through the market, past stores with questionable tastes in clothing, stores that have cutesy youkai-like toys, stores that sell music, until you reach the end of the market. Here are stores that sell used goods, or claim to sell antiques, and the crowd opens up to let you pass to your destination. Hatate is at the counter with a somewhat nervous proprietor, studying a mask. You look at the walls, and the masks hanging on them: some are new, and have faces you don't recognize, but others are older, and others are new but sport older styles. "A-Ah, good evening, Miss Tengu! Please, make yourself welcome!" You smile at the proprietor, and smile even more widely at Hatate as she turns to face you.

"Aya! Um, I was just looking around, and – they have amazing cameras, Aya! Here, let me show you!" She darts around you to her bag and sets it on another counter. You glance at the mask Hatate was looking at – almost certainly a later copy of an earlier mask – and turn, getting a glimpse of her spoils. Two unfamiliar devices with sticks and buttons, two books, a flute, that looks like candy, and then she shows you a camera like Aoi's, one side all flat screen. "See, you work it like this!" She presses a button on the side, and the screen lights up. "You can store lots of things on it, even stuff that's not pictures!" She smiles giddily and you hold out your hand. She hands it over happily and hovers by your shoulder. Now, somehow Aoi had a video of Hatate, so …. You tap at several icons before finding one that leads you to a 'search.' And then, with Hatate watching, you search for tengu. And, how surprising, there are several lines mentioning a tengu shopping in Tokyo. "Um … oops?" You tap one of the video lines, and … oh. It's not a recording. "Am … Aya, am I in trouble?" You hand the camera back to your embarrassed colleague and sigh to yourself. You do not want a headache.

What do you do?

[ ] Better make sure people don't get the wrong idea about youkai. Take Hatate to Edo Castle and blow away the intruders.

[ ] No more headaches. Mission accomplished enough, back to the mansion.

Again, given cats and bags we should probably prevent the whole 'wrong idea' thing.

Honestly, at this point I'd kind of imagine the Youkai/Tengu probably have more interest in the alt!Japan than Falmart.
