[X] Go to Alnus without Giselle.
"So we're leaving in the morning, right? Will we be able to say goodbye to Mora?" You take a bite from a pear and shrug.
"We'll have to turn in our badges, but if you know where she is and we can get there, I don't mind. Giselle did say it might rain, but that won't be a problem for you, right?" She gives you a look, then whispers something to the crows, and after a moment they all bound forward, hopping onto your shoulders, arms, and head. You just reach for another fruit, something like a peach only not so sweet, and begin tearing chunks off to feed to your new admirers. You give Hatate a sly grin, and she jerkily looks away, twintails flying. You bite off a piece of your pear, and a crow takes it from you, then hops across the table and presses it into Hatate's mouth. She takes it reflexively, and strokes the bird's head, and though you're not looking at her, you see her freeze, pear piece still held in her teeth, when she sees you. Then you look at her innocently, she turns red and frantically swallows the piece whole, and almost chokes on it.
She is so adorable.

You step out of the main temple, still under the porch to keep from getting unnecessarily wet in the light rain. Young Mora is still asleep – rather, is
finally asleep – and Hatate is busy offering well-wishes for her sake. Given her age, it's probable that Hardy had
some reason for elevating her to her rank, so she should come out fairly well. A few minutes later, Hatate steps out, looking less stressed than she did when you left, and when she nods, you step out into the rain and fly up. She follows, and you're shortly on your way toward Alnus.
Rondel sits waiting for you, and you briefly reconsider – but if the Gate is open, then it's better to see what's happening there instead of possibly being dragged into yet another incident. Even a simple raid has the possibility of growing into something else if something happens, after all.
The sun has unambiguously risen over Alnus by the time you arrive, which gives you a great look at the encampment the Empire has set up around the hill. It dwarfs the Human Village, yet is curiously empty; a few minutes of observation – and picture-taking, of course – leads you to believe that there can't be much more than twenty thousand humans in the camp, yet it appears set up for more than six times that number. Either you're very early, or the Gate is indeed open. And there are no wyvern-riders flying around to provide security, so ….
"Aya." Hatate gestures toward a knot of figures walking toward a large tent near the middle of the camp. Rather than the normal Imperial armor, most of them are wearing equipment that reminds you more of the Rose Order of knights. Unfortunately, it being broad daylight means you can't get close to the tent to listen in … but you don't really
need that. You and Hatate fly toward their presumed destination, remaining high overhead, and you carefully lower a wind tunnel to draw their voices to your ears.
"... and the army has even sent back a handful of slaves! So we know there are humans on the other side, and that you've been successful! So why do you continue to rob us of glory and honor?" You share a look with Hatate as the speaker is supported by the angry grumbling of other men.
"It is true that the Army has been successful, and that the land on the other side of the Gate is very wealthy." You recognize the voice as that of the old man who had been with Piña at the temple. Godasen? "And there have not been many casualties; for the most part, the army has not been so much as slowed down by the enemy. The exception is an old fortress that many of the people fled to, which has many magical defenses – clouds of choking smoke and invisible blasts that pierce through several men at once. We are keeping them contained, but if I may beg your indulgence for just a little longer until my subordinates can return and give me their understanding of the magical principles at work and how best to counter them, I would feel better about letting the lords of the Empire risk themselves without need. Of course, you may claim shares of the physical wealth that is brought back by the Army." There are no grumbles this time, only silence, and you wonder how many of the group are watching their spokesman eagerly. You look down at the Gate, only lightly guarded.
"... Very well, Senator. We will give you your chance to gain understanding of the other side. But you cannot keep us chained forever!"
"So the Gate is open," Hatate says as the group withdraws.
"Yes, and it seems there are humans on the other side, too. Maybe we'll get lucky and this is a two-for-one." Not likely, of course, but possible. You put away your notebook.
"Er, we're going somewhere?" You smile back at your worried companion.
"Through the Gate. I don't think they can stop us, so we'll just zoom down and through the Gate before they can react, and see for ourselves what it's like." Hatate chews on her lip for a moment, then puts her own notebook away and prepares to follow you. You fly over so you're closer to the Gate itself, then dive like a stooping hawk. A shallower dive would let you go straighter toward the Gate, but would also give the humans more than a couple seconds to even realize something was happening. You snap into horizontal flight and shoot past guards who haven't even begun reacting to your presence, through the Gate – and snap up so your sudden halt doesn't make Hatate crash into you. And then you keep flying up, up, above the tall buildings of steel and glass, so you aren't bothered by the pesky soldiers of the Empire as you take in the vast city that you've found yourself in. And the all too familiar symbols on the many signs you see.
"Aya! Aya this is -!" You nod, but unlike Hatate, you aren't excited. The last time you saw the Outside World, it looked nothing like this. But it
felt much the same, that same lack of fear and belief that led to the creation of the Hakurei Barrier and the withdrawal of youkai into Gensokyo. "We have to help them!"
That snaps you out of your concerned study.
"... Help them? What are you talking about?" Hatate nods eagerly and sweeps her arm around, gesturing at the city.
"The people of Japan! This is the Outside World, right? So now that there's something to show them that things like youkai really
do exist, then we can come out from Gensokyo because people will believe in us again!" Her eyes sparkle, and you wonder what images are running through her head.
"Or this could be the Bureau's Earth, or the one that Illyasviel came from. Or another one entirely." She pouts, but she doesn't back down. "More importantly, they don't
need our help to drive back the Empire. Even if their weapons haven't advanced since the creation of the Barrier, they don't need a Divine Wind to save them." No, rather than help this Earth – if that's where you really are – what you should be concerned with is whether or not to destroy the Gate and save the world on the other side
for youkai ….
What do you do?
[ ] It's too dangerous. Head back to the other side of the Gate and destroy it.
[ ] You'll humor Hatate. You can't create a proper Kamikaze by yourself, but you can still throw tornadoes around.
[ ] … What are you doing? You're a reporter! If this
is Japan, then there must be a Hakurei Shrine. See if Gensokyo exists.
