I can totally imagine Karogen being really into bonsai. In his later years he'd probably have had, like, a small potted travelling garden on a little stand, that he could take with him on campaigns.

Well, that's simply too straightforward. Bluff professes to being part of some accepted order, doesn't he? Not the Vicars, but a part of the old Patriarchate.

As far as Vashti knows, the Red Penitents are a "heretical order", but they were also a part of the Old Patriarchate's governing structure. So clearly something doesn't jive here.

A couple of possibilities: they turned to heresy after everything collapsed, they turned to/got outed for heresy and this was a contributing factor to the Patriarchate's implosion, or they were branded as heretics due to politics or rebellion.

Whatever it is, it would seem to be tied to whatever caused this whole mess in the first place.
