SV's Pick of the Month User Submissions Thread

It was basically sort of a happy accident!

We knew we kinda wanted to do If I Can Reach Any Star, then @Athene's Enterprise review thread started, and it seemed like a fun idea to have two contrasting critical takes on the series. Then, as we were looking for a quest, it occurred that @DragonCobolt still had a Voyager quest running, and the opportunity to have a theme felt too good to pass up on. If there had been a Star Trek GSRP, it could have been completely themed, but alas! But Gundam Frankenreich is far too great to miss out on anyway, so it all worked out for the best I think.

I would love to claim the kind of Machiavellian forethought to have planned this, but the reality is that every month is a bit of a surprise because threads go on hiatus, new ones start, etc..
I haven't read Frankenreich but the blurb lead me to assume it had been inspired by Star Trek as one of it's "many sources" of sci-fi inspiration.

You know, sure, why not? See, it was all part of the plan!😅

By the way, whilst you're here, feel free to propose any quest, fic, or other thread you've been particularly enjoying as a submission for User Pick of the Month. This thread never gets as many submissions as I would like (whilst it has been better recently), so you'd be helping us out, and giving a shout-out to one of your favourite things on SV at the same time.

I'd just like to mention that the Pick of the Month entry for @Omicron does not properly address him as "famous and beloved SV content creator and influencer Omicron." I'm sure this is a simple omission and will be corrected.

I think this is the right bloody thread.

Anyway, first December suggestion (since I didn't know it existed until after Winterfest nominations closed)

NO TRUCE WITH THE ANGELS by @TheOneMoiderah
What happens when you cross Evangelion with Disco Elysium? Some bullshit. That's what. After dying and coming back to life just as the first angel lands on Earth, Gendo Ikari (god help us) kinda-sorta has to save the world while not being as much of a colossal twat and terrible father as he was the first time around. While the quest has only just started, No Truce With The Angels has a banger vibe three updates in and one of the best lines in an introduction post I've ever seen.

Also, have I mentioned the vibe? Because the vibes are real good.

- [] BODY - Your physical Instrument. Your half light. Your ability to make the world move to the whims of your body, but also your body's urges and libido.
- [] LOGIC - Your encyclopedic knowledge, your ability to compute, your creativity and understanding of the world and the rules that govern it. But it lacks understanding of others.
- [] EMPATHY - Your ability to understand and connect with other people, but also your ability to be hurt by those same people.
- [] VICE - Your willingness to betray others, enforce your own goals and move forward with your own plans. Vice is your willpower.
- [] SHIVERS - The creeping down your spine, the feeling of someone watching you, of something going wrong in another part of the world. Perhaps it's just a gut feeling. Maybe it's more.
- [] PARENTHOOD - THIS STAT IS ALWAYS ZERO.

The first arc of this story just got concluded, so I figured that it would be a good timing to recommend this whimsical story.

The Wizard of Elsewhere By @HattedOne

The wizard Barnibus finds himself like a fish out of water when his foolishness lands himself wet and cold in a land far from his library. Obviously not ready for any kind of adventure Barnibus is forced to use whimsical magic and foolhardiness to save his hide, and maybe he can save some others too?

The Wizard of Elsewhere

Wizards are a finicky bunch who prefer shuffling about their Libraries, pouring through ancient tomes, or discussing at length the existential complexities of the number thirteen to… just about anything else. Wizards haven't ventured on quests in centuries and there haven't really been any...

Can people link their own writing here? I'm working on what I feel is the best longform piece I've ever worked on, but due to its dark subject matter it's gotten almost no attention.

[Fallout] American Intoxicants by @RiverDelta

Jackie Stanton is a monster, and everyone around her knows it. She's going to get her just desserts, and by God, it'll be great when she does, but the question is who she's going to hurt before that day comes. It's a story about family, toxic relationships, what makes someone into a bad person, and what happens when someone who wants redemption has done far too evil deeds to ever be eligible for it. The main character is technically an Enclave officer (if you count a bunch of slaving jerks in Ontario who the rest of the Enclave despise as "proper" Enclave), but the real heart of the story is everyone who has to deal with her.

I would really appreciate y'all giving this a look, I think it's some of my best work and I know many people will find it deeply fascinating and interesting.

[Fallout] American Intoxicants, or an Irredeemable Transbian's Search for Redemption Mature

This is the story of a monster from the Enclave, what made her who she is, the harm she did to so many, and her impossible quest to be good. Don't worry, Jackie will get what she deserves. The question is who she'll hurt and how they'll deal with it before it all comes crashing down. Please see...

Hey, the link to The Wizard of Elsewhere got borked on the notification.

Adventurer In Need (FFXIV) by @Erien

A Final Fantasy 14 quest where the player character is NOT the Warrior Of Light - This was a quest where the plot direction was in the air before the players voted on what are character was. The voters settled on Lucian a male Viera gunner who was taken to be an auxiliary troop from a young age and that was some decades ago. The wayward Viera finds himself in Limsa Lominsa looking to start a new life, but a decade of forced service with the Garlean's leaves scars.

This isn't a quest that starts with an epic plot, voters initially decided to try give the guy a quiet retirement fishing actually, it's a quest about the life and times of an adventurer. Slice of life... but well life in Eorzea is rarely boring (Limsa even less so).

Minerva Golding and the Wand of Silver (Harry Potter Deconstruction) by @DragonCobolt, with research by @open_sketch

A deconstruction of the Harry Potter series, Minerva Golding and the Wand of Silver is a story about a young Jewish woman living in London during the interwar period who learns that she's actually a wizard. Meticulously researched and well-written, it touches on a bunch of topics including: antisemitism, fascism, homophobia, magical slavery, racism, and whatever the hell is going on with how wizards in the Potter-verse look down on and use non-magical people.

It seems great minds think alike! 😄

This was our Pick of the Month in User Fiction for April.

...Speaking of which, I should update that thread.

I've read and followed it, but I don't see how it's a deconstruction? It just seems like a total AU that rebuilds a different setting.

Can I submit Good Drones Obey (@RiverDelta), a story about communism, kink, civil war, and what pain remains in a world that's only getting better?

Good Drones Obey: Communism and Kink in Post-Revolutionary America Mature - Timeline - Future

A near-future communist revolution timeline about broken people, esoteric kinks, internet culture, revolutionary utopias, and feeling pain in a world where things are finally getting better.

You just have!

And as it's only several hours since May's Picks went live, I snuck you in for this month rather than having to wait until June.

Neon Lights and Magical Girls -- by @dmclain2

A magical girl story where the focus is on the eldritch entity that grants our magical girl her powers. [Reflection of the Infinite Gyre] is First-Born of the Fair Folk, an old and decayed being from a long-forgotten universe, called forth by a modern-day girl in a new age she doesn't understand.

It's currently only two updates in, but the writing is highly evocative and imaginative, especially in how it portrays Gyre's alien, but understandable, view of the world.

Neon Lights and Magical Girls Original - Modern

Gyre, or rather [Sphere of the Infinite Gyre] is among the eldest of her kind. Born amidst the crackling of campfires and the reverential silence of listeners as shamans sought to craft meaning from the mystery of the world. For Ages beyond counting she wandered free, collecting within her...

For June..another quest by @Erien, his quests are really solid and he's actually finished several...which in my experience is rare thing.

The quest in question is Fate/Clusterfuck, which is, naturally, a Fate Stay Night quest. But well things have gone...differently. Ok Sure Shirou saving Medea has been done... but we have dream visits with Circe, and Mordred being summoned, Taiga has a servant... and well that's not even half of it I think. Despite the grail rapidly turning into a ...well clusterfuck it doesn't come off as anything like a Crackfic. The *situation* might be rather hectic and frenetic but the characters act in character rather then any sort of flanderization or meme modes. You have the frantic fights, the competing agendas, characterization you'd all expect from a good story set in the mess that is a grail war but it doesn't get bogged down and it well.. it just feels fun I guess?

Oh and it has Tiger Dojos for bad ends!

Fate/Clusterfuck (Fate/Stay Night) Mature - Fantasy - Modern

The tale of a grail war gone mad. As a young boy finds a dying witch in a park, many destinies are altered. And in distant England, a shadow stirs.
