What are rules? Rules are additions to Green's behaviour that keep her on the right path. Players can vote to add or modify rules as necessary.
  1. If the active pokemon has a recovery move, that pokemon will automatically use that move if its HP is 1/4 or lower
    - Unless the enemy pokemon reduced the active pokemon's HP to 1/4 or below in a single attack
  2. The pokemon with the lowest level will always be moved to the front of the party whenever possible, unless specified otherwise.
  3. Always offer a prompt to nickname a newly-acquired pokemon.
  4. Pause if an opponent's revealed attack would KO our Pokemon on the next turn, unless if we're sure we'd go first and KO the opponent first.
  5. Immediately use (the appropriate) medicine to remove status effects (& damage if applicable)
  6. Pause if an opponent changes a battle-relevant stat stage (whether ours or theirs) by more than 2.

Sufficient Velocity Plays

Generation 1

Hello there! Welcome to Sufficient Velocity Plays Pokemon! My name is Oak. People call me the pokemon professor. This world is inhabited far and wide by creatures called pokemon. For some people, pokemon are pets. Others use them for fights. Myself? I study pokemon as a profession. But first, why don't you tell me a little about yourself?
Are you a boy?

Or are you a girl?

At any rate, I'm sure you're familiar with my grandson. He's been your rival since you were a baby.

Your very own pokemon legend is about to unfold! A world of dreams and adventures awaits! But before we get started, I have just one last question to ask you.
What sort of adventure do you hope to discover?

[ ] Vintage. This is the exact same game you played 20 years ago. Enemy team comps, levels, and movesets are the same, but all the flaws of the original are present as well.
[ ] Classic. The basic game remains the same, but enemy team comps, levels, and movesets will be adjusted accordingly to provide for a more challenging experience.
[ ] Modern. Everything you thought you knew about Kanto is wrong. There's new pokemon to discover, and enemies old and new now have radically altered team comps.

Hello and welcome one and all to Sufficient Velocity Plays Pokemon! In this quest, you the players will assume the role of either Red or Leaf and guide them through the Kanto region, catching pokemon, battling gym leaders to obtain badges, stopping the nefarious schemes of the evil Team Rocket, and ultimately becoming the league champion, just as you yourself might have done for the first time 20 years ago.

Other characters
Pallet Town's resident pokemon expert, Professor Oak is a kindly gentleman that Green has known her entire life. If she's ever in a pinch, she knows she can call Professor Oak for help.
Blue is our rival, but deep down he's also our friend... Probably. He's antagonistic towards us, but that's only because he wants to push us to be our best, right?
Party pokemon:
Tauros - Level 65
Pidgeot - Level ???
Rhydon - Level 62
Magneton - Level 60
Gyarados - Level 64
Charizard - Level 66
Considered by many to be the best trainer in the Kanto region, Giovanni is something of a celebrity, especially in his hometown of Viridian City, where he's managed the gym for many years.
Party pokemon:
Golem - Level 70
Sandslash - Level 72
Dugtrio - Level 71
Nidoqueen - Level 75
Nidoking - Level ???
Rhydon - Level ???
Giovanni has many, many pokemon gathered from a long life of training and battling, but his most famous are unarguably the team he uses for challengers at the Viridian Gym. Sometimes he likes to shake things up and keep challengers on their toes, but these six are the usual suspects.
There are eight gym leaders to defeat in Kanto, spread out over the many major cities in the region. They are masters of their craft, skilled in the art of training and battling with their preferred pokemon type.
Brock
Brock is the rock-solid leader of Pewter City's gym. An avid fan of the sciences as well as a master of rock-type pokemon, Brock can often be found at Pewter City's science museum giving lectures on a variety of subjects -all of them relating to rocks in some fashion - such as fossils, minerals, mining, and geology.
Party pokemon:
Geodude - Level 22
Onix - Level 25
Misty
At only seventeen years old, Misty is the youngest gym leader in the Kanto region. Proficient with water-type pokemon and very enthusiastic about her job, Misty takes on all newcomers with drive and determination. When not accepting challengers, the gym at Cerulean doubles as an indoor swimming pool, where Misty is a member and lifeguard.
Party pokemon:
Staryu - Level 28
Seaking - Level 31 (Not seen)
Starmie - Level 33
Lt. Surge
Stationed in the region after his service in the Gulf War, Surge, the "Lightning American", is the only one of Kanto's eight gym leaders to hail from another country. He's a loyal man; having done his duty for his country, he now does his duty for the country of origin to both his wife and his daughter, and Surge approaches being a gym leader with the same drive and passion that marked his Army days.
Party pokemon:
Raichu - Level 51
Electrode - Level 51
Electrode - Level 51
Magneton - Level 54
Electabuzz - Level 58
Erika
Erika is the mild-mannered leader of the Celadon City Gym. A florist by trade, she operates her gym outside of a sprawling greenhouse in southwest Celadon, where the sun hits the city just right. She's very content to let the world go as it will, and prefers the simple things in life. She's a close friend of Saffron's gym leader Sabrina, and the two often meet for tea on Sundays.
Party pokemon:
Jumpluff - Level 41 (Not seen)
Tangela - Level 43
Victreebel - Level 47
Bellossom - Level 47
Sabrina
Sabrina is... Different. While other children were busy playing outdoors, Sabrina stayed inside, learning how to finely control the psychic powers that she shares with her pokemon. When she's not accepting challenges at her gym or practicing with her psychic powers, Sabrina enjoys yoga and sharing Sunday tea with her close friend, Celadon's gym leader Erika.
Party pokemon:
Kadabra - Level 50 (Not seen)
Espeon - Level 53
Mr. Mime - Level 53
Alakazam - Level 55
Koga
Master Koga has spent his life training in the ways of the ninja. Unfortunately, he expresses his life's work in the form of cliches from last decade's bad action movies, and as a result comes off as stereotypical and outdated by most, leading to the decline of his gym as an institution of teaching the ninja way.
Party pokemon:
Weezing - Level 45
Muk - Level 44
Crobat - Level 45
Venomoth - Level 47

Blaine
Distinguished scientist, fire-type master, and consummate joker, Blaine is what most people would consider to be an "oddball" of a character, but don't be fooled! While Blaine looks like he's gotten soft in his old age, his lighthearted exteriour hides a burning passion and a never-ending drive to improve himself.
Party pokemon:
Ninetales - Level 65
Magcargo - Level 66
Magmar - Level 67
Rapidash - Level 68
Arcanine - Level 73
The Elite Four are the strongest trainers in the Kanto region - though many would argue that Giovanni is still stronger - and their power and prestige are of size to match their accomplishments. However, there is no glory to be had defeating an easy challenge, so the Elite Four will only accept challenges from those who have earned at least eight badges
A villainous gang of thugs concerned only with money, power, and status, Team Rocket has been responsible for many heinous crimes in the years since their formation. They have a multitude of resources and members at their disposal, so no matter how many times the authorities try to crack down on them they always manage to come back. Approach at your own risk.

Grunts
In the hierarchy of Team Rocket, Grunts are the lowest of the low. Stuck with the most menial jobs and often employing the weakest pokemon, the strength of the individual Grunt is nothing to write home about. Unfortunately, the individual Grunt is never alone; where there's one there's bound to be many more.
Party pokemon: Common pokemon employed by Rocket Grunts are the Zubat, Koffing, Rattata, Ekans, and Grimer lines, though occasionally a Grunt can be found with something a little more more out of the ordinary.
Executives
If Grunts are the lowest of the low, then the Executives are the top dogs. Only the strongest, most experienced, and most fearsome members of Team Rocket can rise through the ranks to reach the pinnacle and become one of the few that call the shots in the organization.
Party pokemon: You would expect the Executives to merely use much stronger versions of the pokemon used by the average Grunts, right? Not always. An Executive's team of pokemon is as varied and fearsome as their master, and presuming you know what you're up against is always a losing proposition.
Boss
Based on his unique and strikingly-distinct uniform, it's a smart guess to say that this man is the leader of Team Rocket. Little is known about him; name, age, place of birth, etc. But whoever he is, he comes across as a vicious and ruthless master to his criminal enterprise, and to everyone else who happens to cross his path.
Party pokemon:
Tentacruel - Level 51
Gengar - Level 52
Houndoom Level 55
Weezing - Level 54
Crobat - Level 53

Ooh, looks neat!

[x] Boy
[x] Modern

I'm fine with either main character. I'm mostly interested to see some new world-building and challenges. ^_^

(Err...are we literally going to be using game mechanics and encounters and maps for this? Or is this mostly narrative-focused? Pacing-wise, I'm just having flashbacks to old pokemon quests that reach 50 updates without getting past the second gym. :p)

I'd like to include a decent mix of both narrative storytelling and stat-and-dice based combat. As for how many updates it'll take us before we beat Misty, I can't really say right now. We could get lucky with minimal encounters, avoid as many trainers as possible, and maybe make it there in under 50; or we could get completely trash luck and hit every wild encounter and trainer battle on the way.

Ah, ok. Guess I'll see how it goes as the quest progresses. :)

Introducing Green
[X] Girl
[X] Modern
Wins by a single vote. Let's do this!

Your name is Fuguri, though as far back as you can remember, everyone has always called you "Green". You're 13 years old, you live in Pallet Town with your mother, and today is the day you've been waiting for for months. Today's the day you finally start your pokemon journey.

Last night it seemed that you were so excited you couldn't possibly fall asleep, but sleep eventually took you late in the night, and now you've awoken to find that you're running late. Hurriedly, you throw on your clothes, grab that Potion that's been sitting in your desk drawer for god-knows-how-long, and barely have time to kiss your mother goodbye as you race out the door.

Pallet Town is a humble little place, a recent residential development attached to the neighboring Viridian City. Not too many people live here yet, but mom is confident that in a few years Pallet Town will be as big as any other city in Kanto. But right now, none of that matters to you. Right now, all that matters is that you're finally able to get your very first pokemon. Wasting no time, you run down the street to Professor Oak's laboratory. The old doc is usually busy working on something, whether he's out in the field gathering data, or working in the back of his lab on some secret project that you're never allowed to see because "Darnit Green, don't touch anything! That's sensitive material I'm working with!"

But today he won't be busy, because today's the day he promised to give you your very own pokemon!

You burst through the front doors, hoping that he hasn't given up waiting for you. He hasn't, but it looks like you aren't the only one he's decided to give a pokemon to today. Standing beside the old doc is his grandson, Blue. You swear there was once a time when the two of you used to get along, but try as you might you just can't seem to remember when that was. Who cares; he's probably got cooties anyway.

"What took ya so long, huh Green?" he asks, gazing at you with a sneer. You grit your teeth and say nothing; you're getting your first pokemon today, that's worth anything Blue could say to you. "Gramps was just about ta start without ya, weren't ya gramps?"

Professor Oak just rolls his eyes, motioning that you join him and Blue at the table by the far wall. "Well, I was getting a little worried that you wouldn't show, but you're here now, so everything's all right."

Three pokeballs sit on the table, and you've every mind to assume that your prize waits for you inside. "You know when I was your age, I was an avid collector of pokemon. I traveled all over the world, collecting, studying, and breeding pokemon in my attempts to better understand them. Ahh, but I'm just an old man now, and these three are all that's left of my youthful collecting. But you probably didn't come here to listen to an old man ramble on; go on, pick one."

You aren't sure which one you should pick. Any one of them would make an excellent first pokemon, and you're sure that each one is just as eager to meet you as you are to meet them.
However, after much deliberation the choice becomes clear, and you claim your long-awaited prize. And when Professor Oak smiles at you and says "That one's really energetic!" you know you made the right choice.

Not to be outdone, Blue declares "In that case, I'll choose this one!" as he grabs at his own choice. The third sits on the table, abandoned; you hope that it too manages to one day find a home.

Oak produces two identical items from the pocket of his lab coat, handing one each to you and Blue. "This is the Pokedex! It's a device I created to help with my research, but I'll wager that the two of you will find them to be just as useful on your own adventures." You gaze at Oak, then at the cherry-red device in your hands... You don't know what to say.

"Ah... Th-thank you professor," you finally manage to stammer out. "I'll do my best; I promise!"

"I'm sure you will. Go on then, run along, and have fun on your journey."

You turn on your heel, prepared to race out the door just as fast as you had come in, but Blue stops you. "Hey, not so fast there, Green. We're both pokemon trainers now, so why don't we have ourselves a little battle? You know, a warmup. What do ya say?"

Blue said it best himself; you're both pokemon trainers now. You know what that means. You know you can't refuse his challenge. You have no choice but to battle.

Who's your starter pokemon?
