I think I was finally beginning to get the hang of making pancakes.
Sort of…
I still couldn't get them to actually be round for the life of me, but at least I could flip them over reasonably well without them falling off of the griddle anymore.
Usually scrambled eggs and bacon that was frequently a little too crispy was my typical outcome when it was my turn to make breakfast, but you can only have bacon and eggs so often before you want to have something else for breakfast for a change.
On the table, among a bottle of syrup, a couple of different kinds of jelly, and some hot sauce that I had found in the market yesterday, there were three plates on the table, each with their own type of pancake on it. The shortest stack were the light and fluffy (if somewhat oddly shaped) successes. The biggest stack consisted of the slightly burnt or unevenly cooked ones that we'd still eat. And the other one…
Surge picked up what could only be called a pancake if you were very lenient with the definition and tapped it against the table.
"Why are you saving these?"
"Posterity?"
"I'm gonna toss 'em."
"They might be edible!"
"Rally, we're not that desperate! Let me throw out the ones that got this bad!"
"But I like burnt stuff!"
"You like slightly burnt stuff! These aren't slightly burnt - they're charcoal! I'm throwing them out!"
"At least let me break them up and maybe make fertilizer for the planter!"
Surge looked at me suspiciously.
"As in, you're not going to try to eat these the moment my back is turned?"
"Um…"
There was a blur and a flash of electricity, and suddenly Surge was standing next to the waste bin dumping my plate of failures into it.
I slumped my shoulders in defeat. "Fiiiiine. I'm not going to try to eat those now. Happy?"
"Very. I don't care if we can metabolize whatever 'cause of our nanites, Rally. We eat real food when we can, okay?"
"Just go wake Kit up. Once we're done with breakfast, we're heading down to the others' apartment to watch some videos."
"Whisper's stuff or actual movies?"
"Hopefully the former. I'd rather know more about Mimic and whatever he did to Whisper's former team sooner rather than later. Find out how dangerous he is. Start coming up with ideas of how to deal with him just in case. That sort of thing."
"I gotcha. I'll be back in a moment…" Surge said as she headed down the short hall to knock on Kit's door.
I turned to slide the last pancake onto one of the remaining plates on the table, then turned to make sure that all the burners were off on the stove.
"AND DON'T FISH THOSE THINGS OUT OF THE TRASH!"
"I WASN'T GOING TO!"
O o O o O
Lanolin wasn't too surprised that the other half of her team barely made it into their second day of downtime before they turned up at her door wanting to watch Whisper's video. Surge had already clearly expressed her disinterest in downtime, even if she needed some, and Lanolin had already noted Rally's protective streak and the way she had hyper-focused on Whisper when Mimic's betrayal of her previous team had been mentioned.
So, she had taken advantage of her respite from any team drama yesterday to try to get as much research as possible done on Mimic and his activities from the Restoration's records.
"Alright, we've got Whisper's mask hooked up to my television, but before we watch anything I managed to have some files dug up on Mimic from during the war," Lanolin explained, projecting a small floating display above her Miles Electric Mini. "Director Jewel has managed to get a lot of the mess Amy Rose left for her organized, but she still has a ways to go and apparently the records archive was even more disorganized while Knuckles had been in charge…"
Lanolin paused and faced her team resolutely.
"Which I believe is one of the reasons Mimic's crimes had been able to go undetected for so long. Six teams… Six teams, totaling twenty-one members of the Resistance either confirmed dead or missing and presumed dead. Tracing back from near the beginning of the war until the disappearance of the Diamond Cutters."
Lanolin sighed as Whisper seemed to withdraw into herself.
"There was no way anyone on the Diamond Cutters would have been able to find out about what had happened with the previous five teams he had belonged to, Whisper. The Diamond Cutters picked him up in Riverside, and his most recent previous team went missing near Bogmoor. The two towns had no secure way to share records at the time, so they didn't."
"But I was the one who introduced him to the team…" Whisper said, looking downwards, her fists clenched in her lap. "I should have suspected something when I saw the badnik with the candybar change into a refugee, but it was just so cool… I took him straight to the others and we basically recruited him on the spot."
"Like any of the rest of us wouldn't have done the same in your shoes, with just the information you had at the time," Rally pointed out.
Surge started to raise her hand in protest, then dropped it. "Yeah, that's fair. We wouldn't've seen the mindfucker's logs about Mimic back then 'cause he wouldn't've made them yet."
Tangle wrapped an arm around the wolf and gave her a hug. "There, you see? Nobody else blames you, Whisper! So stop blaming yourself!"
"It's not that easy…"
"Of course it isn't," Rally opined. "They were your friends, and you thought Mimic was your friend as well."
"The point is," Lanolin interjected, "you've got us now. Tangle, Surge, Rally, Kit, and me? We're your friends now, and we've all got your back! We'll get through this!"
"Damn straight!" Surge proclaimed with a thumbs up as the rest of the group nodded and made other affirmative noises. "Now let's watch those logs so the rest of us can get a feel for what kind of asshole we're up against!"
O o O o O
Watching the logs was obviously rough on Whisper, and she was basically in a cuddle-pile with her little wisp partners and Tangle during all of it and a bit after.
Tangle had also been visibly disturbed, but it was obvious that she had seen it before and was mostly focused on comforting Whisper as best she could.
Lanolin looked downright ill, and was definitely cringing and flinching at parts, but was otherwise forcing herself to watch it all as her own wisp partner peeked out from under her hair near her neck.
Kit was as uncomfortable as he ever was when watching logs when any of us got injured or killed, but Surge was watching intently, visibly angry but otherwise not particularly disturbed.
For my part, I was watching the group as much as I was watching the video. Total party wipe scenarios were nothing new to Surge, Kit, and me, and were certainly to be avoided whenever possible. However, I had long since inured myself to watching our own training logs, so other than a bit of anger that this had happened to one of our own, I was able to remain mostly detached so I could study what was going on.
I did notice something though…
"I didn't know wisps could speak?"
"Oh yeah!" Tangle piped up, happy for the distraction. "They have their own language and everything, and can understand ours! They just can't form a lot of the sounds we use in our language though, so Smithy had a translator function built into their masks!"
"Did... did the guy actually stay to say oneliners like some movie villain?" Surge complained.
"Yes, he did." Whisper said, she sounded angry.
"Can I kill him?" Kit asked. "I can make sure his death doesn't get connected to any of us."
"As much as I want to say yes, we really should try to take him in alive if we can," I said, shaking my head. "If he escapes after we capture him however..." I noticed my field of vision acquiring scanlines and tactical data display readouts, and blinked until all that went away and my vision returned to normal.
"Not gonna protest that," Whisper said. "As much as I want him dead, if we're able to capture him then that is what we should do."
"He's a shapeshifter with a high friendly fire bodycount, and has already escaped prison once," Surge protested. "Better to kill him just in case."
"Uh.... like Rally said, we should try to arrest him?" Tangle countered hesitantly, a bit put off by how vicious some of us were willing to be.
Everyone then looked at Lanolin.
"While I admit that Mimic probably deserves to get killed, we really should try to capture him if that's an option," Lanolin stated. "That doesn't mean that we should endanger ourselves or each other to do so, however. If he has to be taken down in order to prevent him from hurting someone, do so, but if he surrenders, we have to accept it and bring him in."
"Let's not be dumb about that either, Lan," I said. "If he surrenders and then tries to attack any of us, we take him out hard."
There was some general debate over that last bit, but in the end even Tangle agreed that if it came to Mimic or one of us… or even some random civilian…
Mimic would lose every time.
