I think I was finally beginning to get the hang of making pancakes.

Sort of…

I still couldn't get them to actually be round for the life of me, but at least I could flip them over reasonably well without them falling off of the griddle anymore.

Usually scrambled eggs and bacon that was frequently a little too crispy was my typical outcome when it was my turn to make breakfast, but you can only have bacon and eggs so often before you want to have something else for breakfast for a change.

On the table, among a bottle of syrup, a couple of different kinds of jelly, and some hot sauce that I had found in the market yesterday, there were three plates on the table, each with their own type of pancake on it. The shortest stack were the light and fluffy (if somewhat oddly shaped) successes. The biggest stack consisted of the slightly burnt or unevenly cooked ones that we'd still eat. And the other one…

Surge picked up what could only be called a pancake if you were very lenient with the definition and tapped it against the table.

"Why are you saving these?"

"Posterity?"

"I'm gonna toss 'em."

"They might be edible!"

"Rally, we're not that desperate! Let me throw out the ones that got this bad!"

"But I like burnt stuff!"

"You like slightly burnt stuff! These aren't slightly burnt - they're charcoal! I'm throwing them out!"

"At least let me break them up and maybe make fertilizer for the planter!"

Surge looked at me suspiciously.

"As in, you're not going to try to eat these the moment my back is turned?"

"Um…"

There was a blur and a flash of electricity, and suddenly Surge was standing next to the waste bin dumping my plate of failures into it.

I slumped my shoulders in defeat. "Fiiiiine. I'm not going to try to eat those now. Happy?"

"Very. I don't care if we can metabolize whatever 'cause of our nanites, Rally. We eat real food when we can, okay?"

"Just go wake Kit up. Once we're done with breakfast, we're heading down to the others' apartment to watch some videos."

"Whisper's stuff or actual movies?"

"Hopefully the former. I'd rather know more about Mimic and whatever he did to Whisper's former team sooner rather than later. Find out how dangerous he is. Start coming up with ideas of how to deal with him just in case. That sort of thing."

"I gotcha. I'll be back in a moment…" Surge said as she headed down the short hall to knock on Kit's door.

I turned to slide the last pancake onto one of the remaining plates on the table, then turned to make sure that all the burners were off on the stove.

"AND DON'T FISH THOSE THINGS OUT OF THE TRASH!"

"I WASN'T GOING TO!"

O o O o O

Lanolin wasn't too surprised that the other half of her team barely made it into their second day of downtime before they turned up at her door wanting to watch Whisper's video. Surge had already clearly expressed her disinterest in downtime, even if she needed some, and Lanolin had already noted Rally's protective streak and the way she had hyper-focused on Whisper when Mimic's betrayal of her previous team had been mentioned.

So, she had taken advantage of her respite from any team drama yesterday to try to get as much research as possible done on Mimic and his activities from the Restoration's records.

"Alright, we've got Whisper's mask hooked up to my television, but before we watch anything I managed to have some files dug up on Mimic from during the war," Lanolin explained, projecting a small floating display above her Miles Electric Mini. "Director Jewel has managed to get a lot of the mess Amy Rose left for her organized, but she still has a ways to go and apparently the records archive was even more disorganized while Knuckles had been in charge…"

Lanolin paused and faced her team resolutely.

"Which I believe is one of the reasons Mimic's crimes had been able to go undetected for so long. Six teams… Six teams, totaling twenty-one members of the Resistance either confirmed dead or missing and presumed dead. Tracing back from near the beginning of the war until the disappearance of the Diamond Cutters."

Lanolin sighed as Whisper seemed to withdraw into herself.

"There was no way anyone on the Diamond Cutters would have been able to find out about what had happened with the previous five teams he had belonged to, Whisper. The Diamond Cutters picked him up in Riverside, and his most recent previous team went missing near Bogmoor. The two towns had no secure way to share records at the time, so they didn't."

"But I was the one who introduced him to the team…" Whisper said, looking downwards, her fists clenched in her lap. "I should have suspected something when I saw the badnik with the candybar change into a refugee, but it was just so cool… I took him straight to the others and we basically recruited him on the spot."

"Like any of the rest of us wouldn't have done the same in your shoes, with just the information you had at the time," Rally pointed out.

Surge started to raise her hand in protest, then dropped it. "Yeah, that's fair. We wouldn't've seen the mindfucker's logs about Mimic back then 'cause he wouldn't've made them yet."

Tangle wrapped an arm around the wolf and gave her a hug. "There, you see? Nobody else blames you, Whisper! So stop blaming yourself!"

"It's not that easy…"

"Of course it isn't," Rally opined. "They were your friends, and you thought Mimic was your friend as well."

"The point is," Lanolin interjected, "you've got us now. Tangle, Surge, Rally, Kit, and me? We're your friends now, and we've all got your back! We'll get through this!"

"Damn straight!" Surge proclaimed with a thumbs up as the rest of the group nodded and made other affirmative noises. "Now let's watch those logs so the rest of us can get a feel for what kind of asshole we're up against!"

O o O o O

Watching the logs was obviously rough on Whisper, and she was basically in a cuddle-pile with her little wisp partners and Tangle during all of it and a bit after.

Tangle had also been visibly disturbed, but it was obvious that she had seen it before and was mostly focused on comforting Whisper as best she could.

Lanolin looked downright ill, and was definitely cringing and flinching at parts, but was otherwise forcing herself to watch it all as her own wisp partner peeked out from under her hair near her neck.

Kit was as uncomfortable as he ever was when watching logs when any of us got injured or killed, but Surge was watching intently, visibly angry but otherwise not particularly disturbed.

For my part, I was watching the group as much as I was watching the video. Total party wipe scenarios were nothing new to Surge, Kit, and me, and were certainly to be avoided whenever possible. However, I had long since inured myself to watching our own training logs, so other than a bit of anger that this had happened to one of our own, I was able to remain mostly detached so I could study what was going on.

I did notice something though…

"I didn't know wisps could speak?"

"Oh yeah!" Tangle piped up, happy for the distraction. "They have their own language and everything, and can understand ours! They just can't form a lot of the sounds we use in our language though, so Smithy had a translator function built into their masks!"

"Did... did the guy actually stay to say oneliners like some movie villain?" Surge complained.

"Yes, he did." Whisper said, she sounded angry.

"Can I kill him?" Kit asked. "I can make sure his death doesn't get connected to any of us."

"As much as I want to say yes, we really should try to take him in alive if we can," I said, shaking my head. "If he escapes after we capture him however..." I noticed my field of vision acquiring scanlines and tactical data display readouts, and blinked until all that went away and my vision returned to normal.

"Not gonna protest that," Whisper said. "As much as I want him dead, if we're able to capture him then that is what we should do."

"He's a shapeshifter with a high friendly fire bodycount, and has already escaped prison once," Surge protested. "Better to kill him just in case."

"Uh.... like Rally said, we should try to arrest him?" Tangle countered hesitantly, a bit put off by how vicious some of us were willing to be.

Everyone then looked at Lanolin.

"While I admit that Mimic probably deserves to get killed, we really should try to capture him if that's an option," Lanolin stated. "That doesn't mean that we should endanger ourselves or each other to do so, however. If he has to be taken down in order to prevent him from hurting someone, do so, but if he surrenders, we have to accept it and bring him in."

"Let's not be dumb about that either, Lan," I said. "If he surrenders and then tries to attack any of us, we take him out hard."

There was some general debate over that last bit, but in the end even Tangle agreed that if it came to Mimic or one of us… or even some random civilian…

Mimic would lose every time.

We spent about a week or so doing actual training and team building exercises. Which were both much tamer and also much more sensible than those that Dr. Starline had put Kit, Surge, and I through, which was greatly appreciated by the three of us. Whisper took them in stride, apparently having done the same with her previous team. Tangle took to them like a duck to water, which wasn't surprising given that she's basically a bundle of kinetic energy in lemur form as far as any of us can tell.

The only one of us who showed any signs of struggling with any of it was our erstwhile leader, and Lanolin was pulling through via sheer determination and encouragement from the rest of us. And even that struggle was relatively minor, and just a reflection of how much more experienced and/or capable the rest of us were in comparison.

A mere rookie like that Duo guy that had tried to sign on would have been much worse, and likely would have held back Lanolin's own improvements as she'd have felt obligated to helping him catch up.

The mitten wearing cat wasn't seen much around Restoration HQ, and hadn't joined any other teams, instead just running errands during the few times he was around, so it was probably for the best that he didn't join us anyway as he didn't seem to be as committed as Tangle had originally thought.

Silver the Hedgehog, on the other hand, would have been a great addition to our team, although we decided to stick to our initial limit of six members for now due to team budget reasons. That, and even he didn't know when he'd be popping back to the future. Still, plenty of power and drive, and he turned out to be an excellent mentor for Kit, given that they could pull off similar feats with their respective powers.

"Anyway, this is my garden," Silver said as we returned from another training exercise. "Blaze helped me out by purifying the soil with her pyrokinesis, and Belle's been keeping an eye on it for me whenever I'm away. Speaking of which, Hi, Belle!"

"Hi, everyone!" Belle greeted us happily enough.

Huh. If he's hanging out with Blaze and Belle then Silver basically already has a Team. He probably just hasn't noticed it yet.

"Hey, Miracle Girl! So this is what you've been doing in your free time?" I asked with the friendliest smile I could make. Things were still a bit shaky between us, but the few days out she had with Surge, Kit, and I since our return from Eggperial City were smoothing over the lingering resentment she felt towards my being unrepentant about having killed Starline.

Sure, I may have been effectively mind controlled at the time, but I had gone in fully intending to do the job myself anyway before Eggface had to ruin it all by taking my control away.

Anyway, Belle was sort of slowly forgiving me for that.

Kinda.

"Well... most people in the Restoration aren't happy with my habit of fixing badniks... so I've been helping fix things around the Restoration base. I'll still fix Metal Sonic if I see him damaged but... regular badniks have poor animals trapped inside them so I am trying to not fix those anymore unless I have another type of power source handy and ready to install. I… There's only so many rechargeable batteries around that are the right size and capacity though, and Tails won't let me use the ones he allocated to be my emergency backup parts. And the animals can't just be kept in the badniks while I'm waiting on new batteries, so I usually end up… looking the other way while someone else sets the animals free."

I suddenly gave Belle a big hug. "It's okay.... you're not a bad girl... shh."

"So Silver you got your own garden?" Lanolin suddenly said. "What exactly do you plant here?"

"Well I know many people would think it is wasteful but because the future tends to get so bad I do plan flowers... although I do have a few sunflowers so I guess I could take some the seeds of those for eating?"

O o O o O

"Here for your medical check up?" The nurse, a female feline, asked.

"Yes." I was a bit nervous about what they may find but the Doctor (a beaver guy) and the nurse were polite and professional, but they didn't find anything that previous medical exams hadn't already found before. My body was still infused with enough nanomachines that they pretty much made up about 50% of my overall mass (easily explaining why I weighed so much despite not appearing to be overweight). Nanites that mostly feed off of the Chaos Energy that I, like every other living creature and a few odd minerals and crystals, generate at varying rates.

There was a possibility that I might have issues if I entered an area with particularly low levels of ambient Chaos Energy, and we were already aware of at least some of the problems inherent with me entering a region with particularly high levels of ambient Chaos Energy.

Which is to say that my nanites would start converting me back into Metal Rally as soon as they detected sufficient levels of Chaos Energy to bring my Chaos Drive back online.

Fortunately, swapping modes, whether in part or all at once, didn't hurt at all. Not like launching my boobs had. It just felt weird.

Tails wanted to see me in my Metal Rally form to do some tests, but (fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view) that was getting delayed until at least some safety equipment got made and either Sonic or Shadow were around to stop me if I lost control.

Sure, Surge was available, but I didn't want to put her through the experience of having to put me down, even if it was virtually guaranteed that I'd recover even if she accidentally used too much force and killed me.

Once my medical check up was done, I got out of the hospital and waited for the rest of my team to be done with their checkups in a nearby park.

I saw Tails playing with a young rabbit girl (I think her name was Dream or Cream or something like that) and it was so cute I wanted to take pictures. Then my vision digitized and briefly pixelated before resolving into a crisp, high resolution display complete with supplementary data fields and graphics.

[Camera mode online]

I quickly closed my eyes and willed my eyes to turn back to normal, not opening them again until I felt them do so. Hopefully no one had seen that. I took a hand mirror from my backpack and looked my face over just to be sure, but thankfully the badnik eyes were gone.

I then took out a small notebook and wrote down the date, time, and what had happened. While annoying, it was better to keep track of stuff like this or it would come to bite me back in my tail.

I continued to watch Tails, Dream and various other kids playing. Overall, it was very relaxing. Especially since my eyes did not act up again.

"Having fun, Dork?" Surge asked as she sat down next to me on the park bench.

"Mostly relaxing, Rockhead. How did your medical checkup go?"

"I need more carbon and iron in my diet. My nanites eat that stuff like crazy. You?"

"The same as the previous check up, but they aren't testing my Metal form yet."

"Think Silver and that Blaze chick are dating?"

"If they are, Silver hasn't noticed yet."

"Yeah.... we aren't dating are we?" Surge asked with a bit of panic in her voice.

"No, you are like an annoying younger sister to me."

"Good... cause that would have been awkward as... heck." Surge said taking care of her language to not curse in front of the kids in the park. "So... turns out I have been checking over some girls without noticing. So, I may be bi..."

"Ah... so what girl do you think is hot?" I asked, as I had nothing better to talk about.

"Amy Rose, Blaze the Cat, that Vanilla the Rabbit woman who is watching her kid over there and... probably heard what I said because of her long ears."

Watching Surge blush was kinda cute.

"The Doctor said that it's perfectly normal for a teenager to be an awkward mess about stuff like this, but that I could ask my therapist about this stuff if I wanted."

"So... buying new posters then?" I asked in a teasing tone.

"Shut up! You've been eyeing some girls too!"

"Maybe. I don't feel ready to try dating anyone though. Some of my memory fragments seem to involve some really bad break ups. Sonic, some skunk guy, a monkey wearing a crown…"

"Sounds like you need to try the other side of the playing field for a bit. Unless the monkey was a chick?"

"No, he was another guy. You might be right, but I still don't feel ready to try doing more than just looking."

"Fair enough, I guess."

"I kinda remember some other people too, but it's all still mostly hazy with maybe a handful of standouts."

"Really? Like who?"

"I've had a few dreams about a cyborg rabbit named Honey or Bunny or something like that. Sometimes she's wearing something, sometimes she isn't. But I'm not sure if we were friends or something more. Also some coyote guy, a walrus for some reason, a smoking hot lady lynx that I'm pretty sure had been my best friend and nothing else, and maybe a few more whose species and genders escape me."

"Okay... so... wonder what is taking the others so long?"

"You, me and Kit are seeing the same Doctor, so Kit is probably having a similar checkup to ours. Tangle is getting an MRI done and dunno about the rest? Probably waiting for Tangle to be done since the MRI may cause some trauma due to being alone in an enclosed space?"

"Uh, why is she getting a MRI?"

"Cause unlike you, me, and Kit, she doesn't have metal inside her body so she can get one done. She had a lot of head injuries over the years so better be safe. So yeah, I think Lanolin and Whisper staying nearby for moral support is likely. Also she's getting her tail checked just in case."

"No clue about Mighty Sheep and Quiet Wolf then?"

"What's with you and nicknames?"

"I just feel like doing it?" Surge said and crossed her arms.

"Fine. Lanolin is probably getting a general checkup to see how hard she can push herself with training. Whisper... no idea, I am not aware of her having any health problems?"

"Me neither."

"Hey gals, what's up?" Tangle said, for some reason Whisper was carrying her in a bridal carry while her long tail was over the wolf girl's back.

"Do I wanna know?" Surge asked.

"The MRI sucked but hey... nothing wrong with my head at least." Tangle explained, while she tried to cover her body shaking.

"And Lanolin?"

"She has a microfracture in one of her legs so she is getting all her bones checked just in case."

"Damn, when did she get that?" Surge asked.

"From the mission when Shadow blew those giant fake Emeralds up, She had looked fine so it's not like she had a bone scan done before today."

Now the reason why Lanolin got hurt? She got too close to the action and wasn't wearing enough armor not to mention the whole situation was insane.

(@Pinklestia actually wrote most of this one, with some edits and modifications made by me.)

Lanolin felt frustrated at being the only member of her team that was currently injured, although it did explain the persistent ache in her leg that she had worked through while training during the past week or so. Thankfully it was a microfracture instead of a broken bone, so it wouldn't take that long to heal now that she knew about it. Even so she would be delegated to mission control for whatever mission the Team as a whole took next.

For now, because they needed the money, Surge was doing some fast deliveries of information and supplies that Sonic was not doing because he was not around. And, unless it involved saving kids lives, Shadow usually didn't take those fast delivery missions.

Not that Team Dark did many missions for the Restoration anyway, as they were still nominally a GUN asset, albeit one that worked mainly in the islands.

Rally, Kit and Whisper had taken a sabotage mission aimed at disabling the aptly named Chemical Plant Zone before Eggman could reclaim it again.

As for Tangle?

The lemur was taking care of Lanolin just in case a certain shapechanging asshole decided to take the chance to try to kill and replace the sheep girl. Also Mimic probably couldn't copy Tangle's tail right, so that was an extra layer of security.

On top of this, both were wearing their own biometric monitoring devices. Something small and unobtrusive Kit had whipped up and had given to the two to test after keying each of them to their respective monitor.

Sure, it wasn't much yet, but it was a start and every little bit helped. After their mission, Rally, Kit, and Whisper were going to swing past the Diamond Cutter's old base to see if Mimic had left anything behind that Kit might be able to use to obtain his biometric data so that a more active scanning device could be made in order for them to be able to track down the traitor…

O o O o O

"Can't believe Chemical Plant Zone is still around." Whisper said in a low voice.

"Before Doctor Eggman's takeover, it had been controlled by locals who mainly used it to produce some chemicals that were high in demand. It's been in and out of Eggman's control for a while, but never fully destroyed because it had been considered to be too valuable to actually lose. Whenever Eggman has Chemical Plant in his control, he uses it to produce several of the chemicals he tends to use in Badnik production... and mustache care cream? Seriously?" I said while reading from my tablet.

"What? No blue pills?" Kit quipped. Something that I would ordinarily have expected from Surge had she been along for this mission. I was kind of glad she had decided to do some courier jobs for the Restoration instead, as this type of mission would have bored her to tears, but her reasoning for doing so was to snub Sonic for being unreliable so my feelings were a bit mixed…

Eh, screw Sonic. If he didn't want Surge to try to show him up for his perceived failures, he'd stick around more and take actual jobs instead of bumming off of his friends so much.

"Be careful. Many of the chemicals produced in Chemical Plant are highly toxic." Whisper said. She then put on a breathing mask while Kit and I did without. We didn't need the protection as our nanites would handle the toxins as long as we didn't do something stupid like actually swim in the stuff. And even then, we'd probably recover once our bodies were removed from whatever toxins we happened to be submerged in.

Eventually.

Assuming that the toxin was neither acidic nor alkaline enough to dissolve our organic components faster than our nanites could regenerate us.

Okay, avoid swimming in this Zone.

If Kit was annoyed at his joke simply being ignored he didn't show any sign of it.

"So Kit, got the explosives ready?" The Restoration couldn't take back Chemical Plant Zone yet, they just didn't have the manpower to hold it. Also badniks, unlike people, could survive in very toxic places, even if at the cost of their organic batteries suffering a reduced lifespan. Luckily, probably to avoid the hassle of constant battery replacements, no local Badnik used organic batteries anymore.

Also, the actual owners of Chemical Plant finally wrote it off as a loss after the Phantom Ruby War, so the restoration wasn't going to lose any good will from causing the loss of jobs when we render the site inoperable. Hence the go-ahead for the mission once it was proposed.

"Yes," the fennec handed me the explosives, and I infiltrated the factory with Kit being behind me. As with other times I did this, it felt really familiar. Whoever I had been before probably did a lot of sabotage and infiltration against Doctor Eggman.

Whisper stayed behind, her role both being overwatch and to snjpe anyone she could if we got discovered. Unfortunately alone, as someone needed to stay back with Lanolin in case Mimic tried something, and the lemur had already proven that she could handle him in close quarters combat if she needed to. Still, at least Whisper wouldn't be constantly getting worried about her girlfriend getting injured or killed due to chemical exposure during this mission.

At first things went well. We had managed to plant all of our explosives in the preferred target structures to ensure that the damage was both total and contained so as to not poison the local region any further than it had already suffered. However, things got exciting shortly after we started pulling out to retreat far enough away to set off the demolition charges.

I suddenly pushed Kit away and blocked a familiar spinning attack with my energy shields.

Metal Sonic was here.

PING!

Whisper's bullet ricochet off of the metal frame of the super badnik, but Metal Sonic completely ignored the hit, only having eyes for me.

[Chances of survival under 30% activating Emergency mode.]

For once I was actually relieved of changing into my Metal Form. The box I had in my backpack with a fake Chaos Emerald (that Tails had given me for an emergency) got absorbed into my body.

With the Chaos Energy source no longer being shielded, I probably had about eight to ten minutes of energy left.

This time instead of bomb boobs I had... twin ball turrets in my chest?.

B-BANG! B-BANG! B-BANG!
B-BANG! B-BANG! B-BANG!
B-BANG! B-BANG! B-BANG!

Ow! Motherfucker, that still felt like getting stung by a bunch of hornets! Only this time the pain was focused in one specific spot on each boob instead of being spread all over them.

If you can't figure out where, I'm not gonna tell you.

Unlike with Whisper, Metal Sonic actually did do his best to dodge my shots, because instead of bullets I was launching metal spikes like the one I had used to injure Sonic. It didn't matter if Metal Sonic could tank the damage or not, his Sonic The Hedgehog combat data kept making him try to avoid getting hit by metal spikes.

KRAKBOOM!

While I had Metal Sonic distracted, Whisper used one of her other Whisps to put actual power behind her shot. Metal Sonic was hit by a massive electrical attack.

Then Kit hit him with salted water, the idea being to cause him an electroshock, unfortunately it barely worked, Metal Sonic then changed, looking like...

"[OH SHIT!]" I quickly ducked away from being hit by a blue metallic version of Chaos, one that had spiked arms.

This was new, even when he had gone all Metal Overlord Metal Sonic was not this creative, at least according to the files the Restoration had about him. He also had not shown anything like this when Kit, Surge, and I had faced him back in Eggperial City.

[Metal Sonic Liquid Metal Prototype Mark II, Override code invalid. Scanning...]

An experimental Metal Sonic? Well, Doctor Eggman probably had forgotten about this one, thanks to the whole amnesia thing, what with becoming Mister Tinker then getting brainwashed back into being evil.

The longer we fought the more it was clear something was missing from this version of Metal Sonic, he was too robotic, too detached. Yeah the liquid metal Chaos form was new, but his moves were a bit too telegraphed. The only reason I wasn't winning was because I didn't want to risk touching him. Who knew what his nanines would do to mine? I didn't want to risk becoming a fusion monster like in one of those superhero comics.

[Metal Sonic Liquid Metal Prototype Mark II, Scan at 100% Liquid Metal Form acquired. Restoring Chaos Drive...]

What? No, no no no! How!? There wasn't enough ambient Chaos energy for that!

[ERROR! ERROR! CRITICAL DAMAGE TO LOCOMOTION EXTREMITIES! REPURPOSING MANIPULATION EXTREMITIES TO ENABLE CONTINUED EVASIVE MANUEVERS!]

My distraction caused me to be finally hit by Metal Sonic. Good news? We didn't fuse. Bad news? He literally tore my legs away with his spiked arms.

Let me just say here that it's a damn good thing that my Metal Mode allows me to continue to fight despite any pain I may be feeling because if I thought my tits hurt from spikes shooting out of them, this was so much worse that I don't even have words for it!

Fortunately, even with as mind numbingly intense as the pain was, it was brief. Restricted to a moment of pure agony that was there and gone, leaving only a (very traumatic) memory behind in its wake even as I dodged further attacks by running around on my hands...

Then Metal Sonic got literally eaten by a black hole, well the Wispon attack equivalent. It looked... kind of violet?

"[I didn't think Whisper had that Wisp?]"

"She doesn't." Kit informed me. He was holding a burned-out laser looking gun. Next to him a ghost like Violet Wisp with no eyes or nose was laughing in joy.

"When the heck did you get a Wisp?" I just had to ask, as my body slowly healed itself, thankfully back to my normal form. My torn off legs turning to liquid metal and joining the rest of my body? That I looked away from and tried not to think about.

"Five minutes ago, more or less. He was inside a Capsule, got him free and I asked him if he wanted to kick Metal Sonic's ass."

So I lasted about five minutes fighting Metal Sonic? Probably more considering Kit attempted to fry him with salt water and Whisper using an electric attack from before.

"Huh... So Tails gave you his Wisp translator or something?"

"I just copied the data in Whisper's mask. Still working on my own version but I can get general ideas at least."

We waited for a moment in silence, when the prototype Metal Sonic didn't miraculously come back we both decided to not temp our luck, get out and detonate the bombs.

And hey Kit got a Wisp companion out of this, so it wasn't that bad?

At least I hoped that this was all worth the nightmares that I was going to have over the next few days.

Ow. The amputation pain is already gone but my tits still sting like I dipped them in a hornet nest?

Eggman was an asshole…

So I've had an idea about Surge and Kit, not sure if ya wanna know or not. I think they are clones. Their genetic donors were either blood donors, or Starline kidnapped and disposed of them. And he grew them around the robotic skeletons. Plus this would tie into Starline wanting Tails DNA, genetic augmentation would be easiest as the organism is starting life. So in a way Kit is related to Tails, maybe like a cousin. Maybe Surge is augmented with sonics DNA?

Maybe another character that's related to sonic and is a victim of Eggman? Breezie. Eggman gets things from other versions of himself right? Including Roboticization and Cyberization. Maybe he decided to test it with a Relative of Sonics, or maybe decided to play God and make Breezie from Sonic and Amy's DNA, and Cyberized her, deemed it a failure, and kicked her out, her humble beginnings. I know, odd and weird. Its just the kinda ideas that pop into my head.

*snipped for brevity*
I'm not going to discount the idea that Surge and Kit are clones, as this is a distinct possibility. It's just that they are assuming that they are like Rally, but Dr. Starline's methods of wiping memories were more successful that whatever Eggman had done with Rally.

As for Eggman? While he's experiencing some dimensional contamination (the main reason he had put Rally into a stasis pod in an out of the way location in the first place), this has mostly been in the form of memory fragments rather than the more physical stuff Rally is experiencing on top of those.

Breezie might pop up though...

I'm getting the feeling Eggman said to himself "tits are useless on a robot" and deliberately repurposed them as variable weapon mounts.
Because in this case, one time is probably enemy action, and two times is definitely enemy action.

Just remember that the Eggman involved in the origins of Rally's issues isn't necessarily the Eggman of this dimension, even if he may be experiencing some additional memory fragments of his own from the Eggman who is responsible for them due to the same dimensional contamination that caused him to put Rally into storage in the first place.

And, much like Rally, those extra memory fragments aren't even necessarily from just one additional Eggman...

Surge didn't curse up a storm when she found out she had missed a fight with a 'Liquid Metal Sonic' but only because she got distracted fussing over me.

"It's okay, I'm okay now!" I tried to insist. Well not quite, the whole liquid metal deal hadn't turned off yet, even though I currently looked organic. Well, other than my eyes for some reason, which retained their badnik appearance of blue digital irises on black sclera.

"You literally had half your body melt into liquid metal! How is that okay!?" Whisper pointed out, slightly louder than she normally was.

Okay fine she had a point.

"She what!?" Lanolin exclaimed.

"I apparently copied Liquid Metal Sonic's primary ability…" I clarified, having brushed over that part of the explanation before. "The upside is that this allowed me to recover my legs shortly after he ripped me in half. The downside is that acquiring the ability distracted me enough that he was able to catch hold of me and rip me in half. Ugh… This means that I'll have to let Tails give me that checkup he wanted... and I am so damn hungry! I might look normal right now (well, mostly normal), but I'm actually still in my Metal Mode and haven't figured out how to shut it down yet! It's… a bit more resource intensive from what we know of it already, and this liquid metal state makes it worse!"

Fortunately, Surge, Kit, and I literally bought cereal by the barrel in case we needed something to help fuel our regeneration cheaply. However, we didn't buy milk in those sorts of quantities because it would normally spoil before we drank it all if we did. So, not wanting to deprive Surge and Kit of our limited supply of milk, I had been alternating between making the oats boiled with water or just eating them dry instead.

At least we still had enough sugar because, you guessed it, we also bought a barrel of that as well.

For as long as those lasted anyway, as I was going through them at a ridiculous rate and still felt like I was starving!

"Okay, we'll notify Tails and arrange an appointment as soon as possible," Lanolin stated bluntly. "And I'll stay with you while the rest of the team heads out to the Diamond Cutters' former base to see if they can find anything Mimic left behind that might be useful in tracking him down."

"But…" Surge started to protest before I interrupted her.

"I know you're worried, but this is something you can at least do something about," I said, trying to assuage her feelings. "Lan will be with Tails and me, so we'll both be safe. In the meantime, you guys can recover the Diamond Cutters' medical records and personal effects to disguise what the purpose of the mission really is in case Mimic finds out about it. But what you're really after is anything that Mimic might have left traces of himself on. Blood, tentacle prints, inkstains… Anything that Kit might be able to use to add to a proper dedicated detection and tracking scanner."

"Oh, yes!" Kit exclaimed excitedly. "Samples of either Mimic's blood or ink would be ideal for such purposes. Along with his medical records, assuming that they can be recovered."

"Right," Surge sighed. "We'll get that done. You two just get better, okay?"

"That's the general idea," I assured her as Lanolin started making the appropriate calls…

O o O o O

"This is quite bizarre." Tails said after taking a few samples - a bit of a trick in and of itself as my currently liquid metal body ate the needles even faster than my regular state had after the Eggperial City incident -and conducted several tests on both me and the samples. "The good news is that your nanites do not replicate when separated from you, and go inert if kept from your body for too long. So you aren't going to spontaneously generate random clones of yourself. Your nanites did incorporate new code from the Liquid Metal Sonic, and it's taking a while for that to settle, but it's still way more stable than the nanites of the Metal Virus had been. There's no sign that you're at risk of causing another Metal Plague."

"If the nanites involved with me and Liquid Metal Sonic are like this, I'm beginning to wonder if Dr. Starline messed up with whatever he did to purge his Mister Tinker persona so he could have his idol back."

"Yeah, Eggman did seem to be a bit extra careless for a while there," Tails noted. "It's always been kind of hard to tell with him though. Hopefully with Starline gone, we might see signs of the traits that made Mister Tinker possible returning, but I wouldn't bank on it."

"Hope for the best, but don't expect it. Got it," I acknowledged as I sat down on a couch in Tails' lab. "Any bad news?"

"Well, half the time your body shows as mostly organic, the other half it shows as mostly robotic, so no real difference there for the most part. Unfortunately, with your nanites in their current state, you seem to be stuck in high energy mode, which is why you're hungry all the time. Your nanites are supercharging your metabolism so that your body will convert food into energy faster, with some of that energy being naturally converted into the Chaos Energy they need to maintain their current state. Normally, you'd be fine if your Chaos Energy got too low, as your nanites would just step down to their lower energy functions. Possibly even going dormant if you ever get too low in chaos energy for whatever reason. Unfortunately, it looks like assimilating any major ability forces your nanites to maintain your Metal Mode until it is fully incorporated, and letting your energy levels drop too low may actually prove fatal as your nanites might stop working."

"Well, at least Surge and Kit shouldn't have this issue, as neither of them seem to have any sort of incorporated adaptive upgrade scanner."

"There is that, yes," Tails acknowledged as he continued to go over the readings. "At the moment though, it looks like there's nothing we can do other than to wait out the assimilation process so that your body can return to its lower energy state on its own."

"Well, that sucks," I groused. "Our food budget is taking a hit as it is."

"You could always try to speed up the process by either increasing your caloric intake or receiving regular doses of Chaos Energy. Probably better to do both."

God dammit! That would be even worse for our food budget!

"Just how much food are we talking about here?" Lanolin asked.

"Probably the same as six or seven adult male humans. Rally would need an actual medical doctor to get more exact numbers."

Yeah.... forget adding Silver to our team, I'd need enough to feed an entire six person Team on my own if we did that.

Stupid nanites…

"Is there any way to… I dunno, at least force my nanites to deactivate the liquid metal state so that they could finish the assimilation in a power saver mode or something?"

[Power Saver Mode activated. Ability Assimilation will continue running in the background at a reduced rate until completion. Combat Modes disabled in the interim.]

Suddenly I felt tired and weak and... not hungry anymore. Good thing I was on Tails' couch already, because I wanted nothing but to fall asleep.

So I did.

O o O o O

Thankfully, when I woke up again, it was in my own bed rather than in some hospital.

"Hey, Sleeping Beauty, you okay?" Surge asked me. Kit was behind her... playing cards with his Wisp? Uh. Well nice to see they are getting along.

"Yeah, I think so? Just... I'm pretty sure that I'm currently not any stronger than a regular chipmunk right now. But at least I am not made of liquid metal anymore?"

"No hunger?"

"No... what did Tails say?"

"Scans show you as 99% organic, with your nanites being much harder to detect. He doesn't know how the hell that is possible," Lanolin informed me.

"I saw something about a power saver mode activating? I guess that's it?"

"So... you can just... deactivate it then?"

"Maybe?" I tried to focus on exiting power saver mode, but I got nada, nothing, it was like yelling a un muerto.

"Apparently my system or whatever doesn't feel like it en este momento."

"Why are you using Spanish?" Surge asked, confused.

"Eh, felt like it. So, can I get out of bed? Still have to finish my own after-action report from the last mission."

"Sure, go ahead."

Turns out that without my nanites helping me I was still smart, just slower... at doing everything. I resisted the urge to ask Lanolin if that's what it's like to be a normal person as I didn't want to be rude.

Also, now that it had occurred to me, I had vague memories of this actually being the case. Really vague. Not so much fragments like I usually experienced, but more like a general impression that I had done something like these reports many many times in my mostly forgotten past.

Why the fuck I hadn't experienced this before with other after-action reports, I had no damn idea...

Stupid brain...

Still, not feeling like I was constantly starving was nice, and it wasn't like Lanolin was gonna be battle ready for another day or so anyway. Figuring out how to disable Power Saver Mode could wait until then.

"Hey, Kit."

"Yes, Rally?"

"I might need one of those biometric monitors myself while I'm like this. You know, until I can prove I'm not Mimic by using my powers?"

"Already done. You're wearing it right now even."

I looked at my wrists for a watch-like device similar to what Lanolin and Tangle were wearing but saw nothing.

"It's the choker," Lanolin pointed out. "He made one for Whisper too and incorporated his and Surge's into one of those spiked wristbands they wear. You were out like a light for over a day, Rally."

"Okay, how am I not hungry then?"

"Heh," Surge chortled. "Turns out that you'll eat in your sleep if someone feeds you. I took over that part after Kit and Tangle almost lost some fingers during their attempts. You might not be as strong as you normally are right now, but you still left teeth marks on the spoon we used!"

Presumably the same plastic spoon that she had just taken out of her pocket and showed me, much to my mortification.

It was covered in tooth marks, like a demented two-year-old had been gnawing on it…

Worse, as I previously had made it clear that I saw Surge as an annoying younger sister, I couldn't tease her about spoon feeding me. Heck, the only one I could tease without feeling awkward about it would be Lanolin, but the timing just wasn't right.

"Thanks for being a good sister." I said and gave Surge a hug. She hugged me back, being careful to not hurt me.

Dammit! I wasn't that fragile!

The PATHFINDERS New
I did up Lanolin, Rally, Surge, Kit, Tangle, and Whisper as best as I currently could in HeroForge:

Lanolin the Sheep, erstwhile leader of The Pathfinders.

Rally the Chipmunk and Surge the Tenrec, the teams forward strikers and heavy hitters.

Kitsunami the Fennec, the team's mid-range striker (hydrokinesis), and technical support.

Tangle the Lemur, mid-range striker and general flanker.
Whisper the Wolf, the team's sniper and variable wispon mistress.

"So how are you holding up?" Whisper asked me. We had gone to a park because none of us wanted to stay inside too much. Well save for Lanolin, as she went to catch up with some people in the Restoration she hadn't seen in a while. Also, she totally wasn't being bait, and we wouldn't rush to her if anything happened, not at all. And Tails wasn't using cameras to trail her, that would be silly.

Inner sarcasm aside, I answered Whisper's question. "It's strange, but not in a bad way. I'm still at least as capable as any normal field operative without special abilities, meaning that I can safely spar with you and Lanolin now without worrying so much about holding back too much or too little."

Tangle was actually much better at absorbing and redirecting physical strikes than ether Whisper or Lanolin, and could actually hold her own for a while when sparring with me or Surge. Sure, she might not be as fast as either of us, and she certainly wasn't as strong as I normally was, but she was definitely a force to be reckoned with in her own right. Speaking of the lemur in question though…

"Why is Tangle upside down?"

"Doing tail stretches!" she replied cheerfully. Why she was being allowed to use a tree I had no idea, but at least the branches were sturdy enough to not break under her weight.

"And you need to be upside down for that?"

"The doctor said it's okay as long as I'm careful!"

"Okay." If I didn't weigh so much, I'd probably be climbing trees by now too.

It kinda sucked, really. Despite registering as being mostly organic at the moment, I still had all that extra mass from the nanites inside of me, giving me a neutral buoyancy somewhere below the surface of the water. Not quite heavy enough to be able to walk across the bottom of a swimming pool, but too heavy to be able to tread water without either a lot of effort or a floatation device.

So the same tree branches that supported Tangle's weight might break under mine.

It just wasn't worth the effort of finding out until I was done with Power Saver Mode though, because my own extra mass might cause me to break my own bones if I fell out of a tree.

Kit and Surge were playing catch with Kit's wisp, only sometimes he literally ate the ball. At least they were using cheap and easily replaced tennis balls. And the wisp was actually catching and throwing more balls than he ate.

"Uh, looks like Amy is waiting for someone," Whisper pointed out. Amy Rose had set things on a picnic table and was looking impatient until Sonic showed up, they argued for a bit and then they sat down to eat.

"Fastest thing alive and he still can't be on time, huh?" I snarked with a snort. Dunno why, as it wasn't that funny.

Amy was wearing a new dress today. One that accentuated certain parts of her body more so than usual... No doubt in a blatant attempt to catch Sonic's eye as she had yet to give up on him.

Dammit, Brain!

I averted my eyes from Amy while I got my libido under control. I, of course, still had conflicting memory fragments about my own presumed past love life, but I was pretty sure that most, if not all, of my previous partners had been male. Not that I was in anyway opposed to the idea of pursuing a relationship with another woman, but I certainly did not want to try dating someone so obviously interested in someone else.

Still, if I managed to actually get control of my Power Saver mode, it meant I wouldn't have to worry about breaking whatever romantic partner I might end up with. So that's something at least.

No sense in even worrying about such matters until I knew for sure though.

Tangle finally finished her tail stretches, dropping down out of the tree to sit next to Whisper, hugging the wolf in the process.

"Hey, Beautiful, miss me?"

"You were in line of sight all the time," Whisper pointed out. "But the hug is nice."

"Oh, finally going public with your relationship?" I teased.

"Yeah... Why wait? Our kind of job isn't exactly safe," Tangle pointed out, accepting my remark easily. I might find something else to tease them about later, but for now I took it as a sign to back off lest I ruin the moment for them.

"Yeah..."

Surge and Kit had finally run out of tennis balls for the wisp to play with (and eat), so they headed our way.

"So, are you two going to have an outdoor date or something?" Surge asked.

"Maybe tomorrow," Whisper said and gave a quick look at me, making me wince. She probably didn't want to risk leaving me alone with me being as close as I could get to normal... and vulnerable.

"Hey me and Kit can babysit no problems!"

"No, you can't," Whisper pointed out. In an active combat zone you can trust Surge to have your back. In any situation he has to wait for hours with nothing happening? Yeah no...

Kit was way better, but if he didn't sense any danger, he would get distracted with one of his projects eventually.

"Fine..." Surge said, looking away. She must be really worried to just not talk back like that.

[Assimilation complete: Power Saver Mode deactivated]

All at once it was like I was in a sugar rush, but I was just glad that the hunger hadn't returned. I stood up and stretched, noting that the liquid metal thing remained inactive, and I was back to being just regular cyborg Rally.

"I think I don't need babysitting anymore. Race ya!" Laughing I ran away, Surge quickly chasing after me then catching up... and then outracing me.

[Chaos Drive Online, currently in Power Efficiency Mode]

Seeing that text in the left corner of my eyes almost made me trip.

Surge noticed I had given up on chasing her and turned back.

"Hey, what's wrong this time?"

The fact she said that pointed out how crazy things had been recently.

"Good news is... I'm in control. Bad news? No clue if that's gonna last."

"So... what do you want to do?"

"Let Tails sleep and call him tomorrow... I haven't lost control since that time with Doctor Eggman so it should be okay?"

[Liquid Metal Mode: Offline]
[Metal Rally Mode: Offline]
[Chaos Drive: Online, currently in Power Efficiency Mode]
[Unidentified energy source: Online]

[Weapon Systems: Offline]

"Fine, but we are all keeping watch until we get you to Tails tomorrow."

"Won't that get cramped?"

"Yes, yes it will."

O o O o O

"Back again?" Despite waiting for the next day to see him, it seemed that Tails had been overworking himself again and it showed.

"The HUD thing I have says my Chaos Drive is Online but it's currently in some sort of Power Efficiency Mode?"

"Really?" Tails then used a portable scanner on me. "Oh yeah that's definitely a Chaos Drive, but it's also... not quite there? Like it is in a fourth dimension? I wonder if…"

Tails continued his technobabble, which I could barely understand other than the fact that the Chaos Drive was apparently simultaneously both in my body while also being in its own pocket dimension.

"Tails... is it safe?" I interrupted him.

"Yes. At least as long as it stays in this Power Efficiency Mode. You may be slightly stronger, tougher, and faster now that you have it, but you don't seem to be at risk of turning into Metal Form or that Liquid Metal Form just by entering an area with high ambient Chaos Energy now. Of course, if you deactivate your new Power Efficiency Mode, your Chaos Drive is going to go right back to activating itself whenever it has access to enough energy to do so."

"So not that different from before, only now I get to have some say as to when my extra powers activate. Got it."

"Are you two done?" Amy Rose asked, somewhat irritated. Not that she was angry with any of us though. It's just that her attempt to date Sonic yesterday hadn't really gone any better than any of her previous attempts despite her expensive new dress, so she had decided to tag along with us today in hopes of being able to blow off some steam via mutual training.

The fact that Surge, Tangle, and I were about the only people that Amy could engage in full contact sparring with without having to worry about hurting any of us if she went all out that happened to be currently available to her may have had some influence in her decision to hang out with us today.

"Yes, at least until something else happens." Tails said before Amy dragged him away from his workstation so he could take a bath and get some sleep.

"Huh, sometimes I forget that Tails is only eight years old. I keep thinking he's older for some reason…"

I guess Amy would train with us later, after she made sure that Tails actually went to sleep this time.

O o O o O

"So, everything okay?" Lanolin asked me when I returned to the apartment she shared with Whisper and Tangle.

"Yeah, I'm a bit stronger than before with the Chaos Drive active," I stated as I sat down on their couch, "but not so much more that I'd need to retrain myself due to it. It's just running in some sort of Power Efficiency Mode that I hadn't been aware was available before for some reason, so that bit may actually be new. I still have to be careful about deactivating this mode in areas with high levels of ambient Chaos Energy though, because otherwise my Chaos Drive will still try to activate either my Metal or Liquid Metal forms just because the energy is available. No new news besides that."

"Well you didn't seem any faster but then again neither of us was going all out," Surge pointed out.

"You know what this means right? Now Tangle and Whisper can go on their date." I comment, eager to change the subject.

"I... I don't know where we could go," Whisper admitted.

"Oh, there's this exhibition at the museum about guns," Tangle pointed out. "It's supposed to last all week."

"Really? I must have missed it, what with all these medical check ups for our Team." Lanolin said.

"While it is work related I think it would be nice." Whisper said. "But..."

"If I go too it wouldn't be a real date," Lanolin concluded. "I guess I can catch up on my soaps then."

With that decided all that was left was... some time off that didn't involve medical issues.

Maybe a beach or something?

SUBJECT: RALLY the CHIPMUNK
(A Sonic the Hedgehog AU/SI)
(with still more contributed by @Pinklestia101)

We did manage to take care of a few things before our impromptu beach trip.

Now that Kit was known to have a violet wisp, the Restoration issued him a Void Wispon, making him one of the very few members who even had one of those as only a few people had managed to bond with a wisp of that particular type before, let alone one that seemed inclined to be friendly enough to actually play with anyone besides its partner.

Whisper had befriended Gnash, of course, just as she had with Lanolin's magenta wisp, Maggie. But she was like the Wisp Whisperer or something by this point, so I wasn't sure that counted.

Kit had also started on actually designing a sensor that could be used to specifically detect Mimic. The data for which was being scrupulously kept within the team for now. Specifically in his room in our shared apartment, and Lanolin's satellite mini office in the apartment she shared with Tangle and Whisper.

There were just too many people going in and out of Restoration HQ at any given time for any of us to feel comfortable with keeping a copy of our anti-Mimic stuff there. And as much of a great kid as Tails was, he was not that great at keeping secrets.

Jewel knew, of course, but had agreed with our assessment that it was best to keep information that Kit was making such a device discrete for now, at least until we had enough units made for her to be able to have them installed at key locations within Restoration HQ for security purposes.

Heck, we weren't even supposed to use any of the Restoration's couriers for this, just in case. Not even Sonic. It had to be at least two of us together, preferably with at least one of us being able to demonstrate an ability Mimic couldn't replicate.

Sorry, Duo, I know you're just trying to be helpful, but it looks like our team just doesn't have anything for you to do yet.

Well, I didn't actually feel all that sorry for the slacker. For someone who had initially seemed so eager to join our team, he hasn't been seen around Restoration HQ all that much, and I've only ever heard about him helping out occasionally.

We definitely dodged a bullet there! The last thing we needed was some lazy asshole that just wanted to coast on our reputation while the rest of us put the work in. The guy still hasn't even attempted to join any other field teams, even as a temp member.

Oh well. Not our problem.

Tangle and Whisper had a date to plan, while the rest of us had a beach trip to pack for!

And I needed to buy some floaties.

Stupid dense body, can't even float properly…

O o O o O

Emerald Coast beach is as beautiful as some of my memories say it is. I might try swimming later, just to see if my new floaties work, but I left them off for now and just enjoyed the warmth of the sun on my fur as I walked across the sand. Surge and Kit joined some other beachgoers who were playing volleyball, allowing a couple of their group to take a break for a while. Lanolin, for her part, largely sat under a parasol, sipping lemonade as she altered between reading a book and people watching. Sure, she was wearing a swimsuit like the rest of us, albeit one of those scant, barely there two-pieces that only counted as modest if you took the fact that she was naturally wooly into account.

It looks like she and I both had our own reasons to avoid actually going into the water, even if those reasons weren't the same. I'll probably join her in a bit after I hit a vendor for my own drink and maybe a couple of popsicles or something.

Tangle and Whisper were, of course, doing their whole museum tour deal, then possibly going on a lunch date afterwards. We wouldn't find out for sure until after our own lunch, as we weren't planning to head back until sometime later in the afternoon.

This is really nice.

Sure, leaving the two on their own may tempt certain fugitive octopus to act, but from our attempts to bait him into striking during the previous week or so, we were almost certain that he'd wait until they were actually isolated rather than going for them while they were in town. Not that this meant that we could get careless - we each kept our biometric monitors on at all times and generally kept to groups of at least two of us at any one time.

Well, Lanolin and I were both kinda alone right now, but both of us were in line of sight with each other as well as with Surge and Kit, and I'd be rejoining Lanolin soon enough anyway. Besides, Maggie could vouch for Lan easily enough just by being there, while I could simply activate a shield or blade from my wrist bangles. It's not like anyone else could activate them anyway, since they were keyed to me.

That reminds me, Kit said that he was almost done with the paired set he was making for Tangle. Those got a bit delayed due to his making those biometric monitors and the Mimic sensor project, but he hadn't actually stopped working on them altogether. Just slowed down a bit, treating them more as a side project to work on during breaks from his anti-Mimic stuff.

As I finally approached the ice-cream vendor, I noticed an attractive, sea-green hedgehog lady with incredible assets who was sunning herself while wearing way too small two-piece swimsuit that made the one that Lanolin was wearing seem tame by comparison. She seems familiar somehow, like I knew her from somewhere, but I didn't get the feeling that we had been friends at all, nor even acquaintances. More like tolerated allies of convenience at best, if that made any sense at all.

And, just like with Sonic and some other random people I had come across so far, part of me seemed insistent that I had never actually met this person before, despite somehow just knowing that her name was Breezie.

Weird.

Good thing I chose to wear sunglasses, so switching my eyes to their cybernetically enhanced state shouldn't be noticed.

Still felt weird though, but at least that feeling is something that lets me know when they look odd, even when the HUD isn't showing anything.

[Breezie the Hedgehog Mark I identified. Remote Override Code detected! Breezie Unit is currently running under the effects of a control override. Scanning... Scan 100% complete. Obsolete model, no upgrades obtained. Remote control enabled.]

What the hell!?

Suddenly it's like my vision is split in two, with one half seeing the world from my perspective, while the other is seeing the world from the perspective of the infiltration badnik. I have full access to her systems and... no wonder my HUD called her obsolete. No weapons systems at all, no real combat programming… Sonic could probably destroy her in one hit without even using any special moves. She doesn't even see in more that 256 bit colors!

Also... while she seemed to be aware that she currently wasn't in control of herself, she didn't seem to be in the least bit bothered by this fact. Which hinted that she was specifically designed for this purpose. Either that, or she trusted the other person not to screw her over.

I didn't spend a lot of time going through her visual logs, as that was something that I'd need more direct access to in order to do the job properly, but the recent visual cache showed that she had paid an inordinate amount of attention to me ever since our group hit the beach.

Great. An infiltration badnik that was actually spying on me.

Not a lot of suspects on that particular list, so I'm thinking either GUN or Eggman.

Still, whoever it was hadn't attacked, and they seemed to be mostly focussed on me rather than my team, so…

Mostly harmless, I guess?

I'd let the others know, of course, but first…

I left a message in the older badnik language the Breezie Unit was using.

[How cute. Try harder, dear, or stop wasting my time. - Rally]

Then I pulled out from the fake hedgehog lady and let my eyes return to their normal appearance.

I was a bit freaked out by this entire sequence of events. I mean, sure, I have lots of memory fragments involving hacking various Eggman-designed computer systems and Badniks, but none of those fragments involved directly interfacing with the code itself quite like this. It had always been by either typing or speaking commands, and many of them involved some sort of handheld device or a…

…Digital lynx lady of some sort?

Even the fragments that had me in my metal form serving Eggman's whims didn't have anything like what I had just done.

And it had been so easy! almost like speaking…

Is this how the real Metal Sonic does things? No wonder he has such an ego! He can literally see how inferior regular badniks are when compared to him if that's the case.

Hold on, Rally, let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

All I did was leave a message for the badnik's operator. It's not like I even tried overriding their override. I just did something that I could have easily done with the proper tools without those tools.

Convenient, but hardly game changing.

I should probably be more concerned with the fact that I may have come across as being flirty with my phrasing and the little heart.

Was I flirty? Why was I flirty?

Stupid teenage hormones...

Assuming, of course, that I actually was a teenager. At least physically, that is.

Parts of me were positive that I was far older than that. Of course, most of those same parts insisted that Sonic was king, and I was married to him with two kids, and all of that is so blatantly provable to be not true that I'm beginning to think that Eggman had let either Orbot or Cubot (or their predecessors) write their weird fanfiction fantasies into my memories before deleting them.

O o O o O

"Just as planned. Rally discovered the nature of the old model within moments of noticing it. And she even left you a message!" Bean the Dynamite informed his partner. "I know I am the crazy guy here, but why risk things?"

"I have my reasons," Breezie the Hedgehog said, but did not elaborate any further.

What Bean wasn't told wouldn't be spread to his usual partners after all. And while Bark could be trusted to remain silent, Fang might try to sell the information to parties that she'd rather not be drawn into these matters just yet.

She was sure that Rally was like her. Not much was known about the cyborg chipmunk just yet, but even just the bits of backstory that had hit the news had been enlightening as long as you had the proper context.

A victim of Eggman and this Dr. Starline character who had become a super-cyborg but had lost her memories in the process? Sure, Surge and Kitsunami were also apparently super-cyborgs, but they were more purely products of Dr. Starline, while it was Rally's connection to Eggman that held Breezie's interest.

The hedgehog smiled.

"Let's just say that she and I have experienced some similar situations and leave it at that, okay? I couldn't very well ignore her, could I?"

Breezie had been found, mostly dead, by caring people who had her taken to a hospital. She had been much more of an emotional wreck at the time, what with having apparently survived the end of her dimention and somehow ending up on another version of Mobius. Or Earth as the locals called their world. Still, her caretakers didn't want to have her committed despite her incredible claims.

It didn't really help matters that she seemed to remember at least two distinctly different pasts. One as an infiltration badnik and the other as a street kid that had made a deal with Eggman to overcome poverty and eventually rise to the top as the CEO of Breezie Media.

Which didn't exist in this world.

And then the metal virus happened. Afterwards Breezie found herself in much better condition... but also somehow still a cyborg even though everyone else around her had been restored to their normal selves. Not that she looked like a cyborg to anyone else, but it was kind of obvious that to her that she was at least partially robotic, given that she had an internalized HUD feeding her data about her own systems and the systems of any badnik she got close enough to.

In any event, Breezie had taken advantage of the chaos after people got cured of the metal virus to earn some money and get her own business. Sure, mercenary work may not be as glamorous or as fancy as a Casino, but it wasn't like she could expect any help from the local version of Doctor Eggman, given that she had no reason to believe that he even knew about her.

Over time, Breezie had managed to upgrade her own cybernetics as much as she could, and had even built a robot copy of herself (using the old schematics she had in her head) to use as a body double.

It was during one of her early mercenary jobs, collecting salvage from one of Eggman's abandoned bases, in which she first discovered the existence of Rally, even if Dr. Starline had come across the actual facility her stasis pod had been stored in before she could reach it.

Sure, the data was incomplete and partially corrupted, but it was pretty clear that Rally was taken from another dimension if you had the proper context clues to know what you were reading.

And Breezie was pretty sure she knew who Rally the Chipmunk really was.

Princess Sally Alicia Acorn, who was now, somehow, both Metal Sally and the Princess Reborn.

A piece of Breezie's old world.

Or worlds.

Or something.

Now if only Breezie could figure out what she wanted to do with this information…

SUBJECT: RALLY the CHIPMUNK
(A Sonic the Hedgehog AU/SI)
(Another chapter mainly written by @Pinklestia, with alterations and edits done by me)

Belle The Tinkerer woke up inside a giant glass tube floating in a green liquid. For a moment she panicked thinking she had been kidnapped again but then relaxed when she remembered where she was and why. She was in Tails' lab, getting a check up for possible spyware from back when Dr. Starline had kidnapped her.

Because even if he was dead, it didn't mean someone else couldn't take advantage of something like that, Tails had explained.

"So... what are the results, Tails?"

"Good news? None of Dr. Starline's code as far as I can tell. Bad news? Mr. Tinker's code is just different enough from Dr. Eggman's that I can't really parse much of it yet, even if it's very similar. Well, other than that I can tell you that he built you to be his assistant and help maintain stuff like his robots and other machines. That probably explains why you want to fix badniks so much. While they might not specifically be Mr. Tinker's robots as such, if we're treating him and Eggman as separate people, they're still close enough that your programming registers them as such, just like the badnik's programming recognizes you as a fellow badnik even though you're not."

"Or I could just be wanting to help more of my Dad's robots out of the bad situations he leaves them in," Belle pointed out snarkily, somewhat irritated at Tails' implied dismissal of her self-determination.

"Well, yeah, I suppose that is another possibility. At least your motive for wanting to fix Metal Sonic is better than Sonic's motive."

"Except that he was gone by the time we left Eggperial City, and from the after-action report that Lanolin's team turned in after their follow-up mission, Bean the Dynamite got ahold of at least his torso and grafted it to a sort of kitbashed combo-badnik. He's probably in a squintillion pieces by now thanks to that maniac..."

"There is something else," Tails mentioned, hoping to improve Belle's mood a bit. "I would never have noticed if Lanolin's team hadn't gotten so many checkups with me, but... Kitsunami and Surge are somewhat based on your design, at least in the basics. So it should be possible to... upgrade you."

"Upgrade me? Oh dear." Belle said looking away and blushing. "Mister Tails I am flattered you are trying to turn me into a real girl, but you're just a child! You are too young for me, even if I am younger than you in actual age!"

"What? Belle, I don't have that kind of feelings for you."

"Ohh." Did Belle sound... disappointed? It was probably his imagination.

"So what do you mean by upgrades?"

"I can try to copy Surge and Kitsunami's special abilities and apply them to you. They just wouldn't be exactly the same exactly the same as theirs. Like I could give you wearable items that make you fast and maybe a variable ice device that could make sword or wrenches or similar items. It would work similar to when Sonic uses a Wisp but last longer. You'd need a significant power source, such as a Chaos Drive similar to what Rally has, but the abilities would recharge over time with just ambient chaos energy. For some reason something similar would only work for Surge and Kit? Like Dr. Starline's logs claimed that you have something he assumed to be an artificially generated soul, but I am not exactly an expert in things like that."

"Ice? But aren't Kitsunami's powers water based?"

"Yeah, he's a hydrokinetic, so his psychic abilities lean in that direction. Your readings indicate that you may be more the cryokinetic type if we can figure out how to activate it. And Kit has to lug around a lot of the water he uses, and wastes a lot of it because his control is broad rather than fine. I figure that you'd rather carry a smaller amount that you could put to a number of different uses if you could."

"Yeah, that does sound more useful for what I tend to end up doing."

"Also... I've kinda been working on making elemental based weapons for a while, without having to rely so heavily on wisps... It's not really fair to put so much pressure on them to find partners even if they did agree to allow themselves to be used in Wispons to help counter Eggman... Anyway, I think whatever Mr. Tinker did to give you an artificial soul makes it way easier for things like that to work for you. I don't know why stuff like Power Cores work for everyone, even simple badnik designs, while things like the Fire Shield can only be used by some people. Some people think it is genetics, but you literally don't have DNA. The idea that it depends on the soul... Well, that's something a magic user would say, unfortunately is not like we have anyone we could ask in the Restoration."

"Huh... Doctor Eggman will probably get frustrated as heck once he figures out that, thanks to Dr. Starline, he literally forgot how to make souls. Or whatever it is that I have that you say counts as one," Belle noted. "Can I get out now?"

"Oh? Right! The hatch can be opened from either side, but please let me drain the tube first so I don't end up having to mop up a big mess, okay? Then you can get cleaned up and... we could test if Elemental Shields work for you?"

"Okay? I am not a fan of fighting but... I need to protect myself more."

What Tails didn't say was that he suspected that Belle's older brother, Metal Sonic, may also have an artificial soul, as he could use Chaos Energy and the Master Emerald to get a Super mode. He wasn't sure how it had happened but it would explain why Doctor Eggman didn't just replace him like he did with every other Badnik, instead just upgrading him. He had even taken the effort to rescue him from Little Planet. Then again, neither Sonic nor Amy were quite sure what had happened there due to all the time travel, save the fact Doctor Eggman got defeated.

O o O o O

Nikki the Digital Rabbit welcomed Cream the Rabbit back home.

"Welcome home Cream! Did you have fun at school?"

"Yes! We had painting class today… I drew Mister Sonic... and so did most of the class… but the teacher liked it anyway!"

Nikki's code had become more stable over time since Cream had found her handheld during one of her adventures. It was as if it was adapting and working around whatever it had been causing her problems, not unlike her robotic friend, Gemerl.

Even so, getting Cream's friend, Tails, to help her had worked wonders! Sure, she was pretty sure that she could have incorporated a bit of Gemerl's adaptive coding that he had been willing to share with her, but Tails' help had made the process go much smoother, quicker, and with much less risk of her literally just becoming an AI copy of Gemerl.

The tall, cinnamon hued rabbit teen, wearing a black gothic dress, giggled.

"Mmm, that kid was so easy to tease! Too bad he is just too young ♡."

"Uh, did you say something Nikki?" Cream asked, looking at the camera of the computer Nikki had been moved to, due to the portable device she had been in before being barely functional. The device itself was still in one of Tails' workshops being studied and gradually repaired, but it wasn't like Nikki was actually tied to it, so she had opted to stay with Cream and her family while this was being done so that Tails wouldn't feel pressured to work on it all the time.

The two-tailed fox was still young, and there was no need to risk his health by overworking him, no matter how willing he was to do the job.

"Cream, you are six, right? And Tails is eight? Do you think he's cute?"

"Ehhh? That's gross!"

"Sorry! Sorry! You are just too young, give it a few years."

Really, she should behave better. Without Cream kindness, she probably would have died, as her code had already been severely degraded by that point. It's just that, when all you have to base your behavior on are a six-year-old and a single mother looking for a good man... eh, could be worse.

She hadn't even remembered her name back then, only that started with N and had more than one syllable.

She had enough fragments of an avatar that she knew that she was supposed to look like an islander, if not the specific subtype, so she based her new avatar on a mix of Cream and her mother, Vainilla, who (both having short tails and large ears) seemed to be at least close to whatever she had looked like before.

Well, according to Tails, her original avatar had apparently actually been a lynx, but by the time this had been discovered, she had already been Nikki the Digital Rabbit long enough that it just felt rude to drop it in favor of her old appearance.

And of course there was Gemerl, they got along well enough even if her teasing went over his head.

A shame that... she had been so useless during the whole metal Virus deal. All she been able to do was give words of comfort to her friend Gemerl after Cream had been infected. Nor did it help that back then she wasn't... quite there. Well, certainly a lot less "there" than she was presently, as she knew she still had a ways to go before she counted herself as being fully recovered.

Although she had been right at the time in that Sonic and his friends would somehow resolve the situation.

A shame that... Sally doesn't seem to be around.

Sally hadn't been her maker. Data on whoever that might have been seemed to be fully absent to the point where even Tails thought that this had been a deliberate omission rather than loss caused by memory degradation. But the chipmunk had been Nikki's first companion, much like Cream was now. A friend, confidant, and occasional nanny - a relationship that she vaguely remembered going both ways. Again, very similar to her current relationship with Cream.

"Nikki, can you help me with my homework again?"

"Sure thing dear, what do you need help with?"

Still, even with so much more left to recover before she could feel confident about knowing who she used to be, Nikki supposed that it was at least nice to have a new family again…

(This one was more of an even split between @Pinklestia and me)

"I'm getting tired of finding myself discovering new abilities after I've somehow already used them," I groused as I returned to where Lanolin was, handed her a popsicle as I plopped down on the towel next to her.

"What is it this time? And is it something we need to cut our day trip short for?" the sheep asked with a hint of resignation in her voice.

"Nothing too serious. I took a chance and scanned someone who somehow seemed familiar to me, and it turns out that the sea-green hedgehog down the beach is some sort of infiltration badnik designated as a Breezie. Definitely not a combat model, and pretty much about as harmless as you can get, so I'm thinking GUN rather than Eggman. Especially since she seems to be obsolete by whatever standards my TOS uses to identify badniks."

"Okay, that's both disturbing and somewhat relieving news at the same time. Stop that. But what's this new ability you're complaining about?"

"It turns out that I can sort of hack certain types of systems that can be operated remotely, only without using any of the tools I would ordinarily need to do so. Systems like that Breezie over there, who had been operated by someone else right up until I left a little message for them to stop wasting my time. Except, like a dumbass, I signed it with a heart and my name."

"Great, so triangulating the control signal is out, since they stopped broadcasting it, and capturing the Breezie is out since she apparently looks normal, meaning that we'd look like kidnappers if we tried to apprehend her."

"And our best scout who could probably remain completely undetected while following her back to whoever she works for is currently on a date with Tangle."

"I agree that whoever is behind this is either associated with GUN or at the very least isn't Eggman. With his ego, there's no way he wouldn't have attacked after you left a message challenging him like that."

"Yeah."

O o O o O

"So... that's what happened and why I was staring at that hedgehog woman so much," I said, wrapping up my explanation again for Surge and Kit as the four of us were waiting for our lunch to be served in Station Square, which was conveniently close to the beach. We had ordered pizza because we hadn't had any in a while.

"So are you sure you don't know why you acted flirty?" Surge asked in a teasing tone.

"No," I almost growl before taking a sip from my cream soda. All these new things about my own body were really starting to get annoying. "I hope those two lovebirds are having a better time than me."

"Well, even if Team Shadow didn't rat you out, we weren't the only Team present during that horrible mission in Eggperial City." Lanolin points out. "I think the only reason GUN had given up on tracking Sonic is because very few people can keep with him. And of those, Metal Sonic works for Eggman while Shadow would find a mission to follow Sonic around demeaning."

"Hey! I'm as fast or faster than Sonic!" Surge pointed out.

"And you don't have the patience for tracking missions." I point out as our pizza arrives. "At least not ones where you're not supposed to be detected by whoever you're trying to follow. Plus you'd be another likely subject for surveillance by GUN if you weren't at least as fast as the Blue Streaker yourself."

"Fair." Surge whines as she puts a couple of slices of pizza on her plate and eats in silence.

Kit blinked a couple of times and moved his eyes away from his portable computer, taking a couple of slices for himself and eating at least half of one before speaking.

"Breezie the Hedgehog is a known mercenary who generally works for whoever pays more, but has thus far avoided working for anyone who would get her on any bounty boards just by working for them, such as Dr. Eggman. Apparently, she had been found outside Studiopolis and had been receiving medical care for some sort of long-term degenerative condition that somehow got cured after everyone got cured of the Metal Virus. She's done some missions for both GUN and the Resistance but has no official ties to either organization and has not done any missions for the Restoration as of yet."

"What kind of long-term condition?" Lanolin asked.

"The article doesn't say. This is only what's available to the general public. To pull more in-depth medical records, we'd need a court order," The fennec pointed out.

Huh… Apparently the therapy and watching kids' educational cartoons was having an effect on Kit. Either that, or he just didn't think it was important enough to dig deeper at this time.

Either way, it's not something to discourage, but…

"So where'd the badnik double come from?" I asked. "Because that wasn't a cyborg back at the beach, and she definitely registered as a badnik rather than some other type of robot."

Kit shrugged. "Hard to say without more information. The badnik you saw isn't the actual Breezie the Hedgehog, or she wouldn't have been in the hospital for so long without being discovered. You identified it as an obsolete infiltration model badnik, and they would have discovered this while trying to treat her."

"Point," I conceded. Another victim of Eggman's maybe? Someone he tried to use and replace?

"So... what are we going to do about my sister's stalker?" Surge asked. It felt nice that she called me her sister even if it wasn't anything official yet.

It wasn't like any of us had uncovered anything new about our annoyingly mysterious pasts after all.

Which reminds me - we still have to go back to Starline's old base to retrieve our logs and pull his servers so that the Restoration can go through them for us (yeah, we wanted the information, but Dr. Dork loved the sound of his own voice and we had all had enough of listening to that pretentious asshole, so if we could get someone else to go through it all for us, I was all for it).

But that wasn't something I was comfortable talking about out in the open, while this Breezie person…

"Ugh..." I facepalmed with both hands. "If she looks anything like her robot double, I don't trust myself to not start getting flirty. So... Can we put her as a low priority for now? Please? It's not like she's the only one spying on me at this point."

I lowered my voice a bit. "I think someone on the Resistance is keeping tabs in our Team and may be either working for Doctor Eggman or some other villain. A version of Metal Sonic is something that should have been noticed in Chemical Plant Zone... at least by the last Team that scouted the place."

"Not saying you are right or wrong, but that Liquid Metal Sonic didn't attack until after you had planted the bombs." Lanolin pointed out. "Why did it put priority in targeting you instead of weaker targets?"

"Probably because I was made by Doctor Eggman and was working to destroy the place. Before that it probably thought I was infiltrating our own Team, but when I didn't attack Kit or Whisper and actually helped to put the bombs in place.... that's when it attacked."

Okay, that actually made a lot of sense now that I thought about it. So at least that Boss Badnik was less likely to have been a targeted attack. Just a robot with different priorities than regular badniks.

"Hey Rally... can you... grow taller with your new power?" I noticed how Surge quickly changed what she was about to say.

"Maybe, but probably not for long without a Chaos Emerald or some other power source." What the heck kind of deflection was that anyway? My latest "power" was my discovery that I could remotely override certain badniks and maybe hack certain Eggman designed systems without the proper tools. Neither of which have anything to do with growth…

O o O o O

Nothing came of the Breezie incident that we know of.

Yet, anyway.

The outdated infiltration badnik was gone by the time we had returned to the beach, of course.

I suppose we could have stayed and enjoyed the rest of the time block we had set aside for our day trip, but the mood was ruined so we just decided to cut it short and return home.

Kit wanted to get to work turning those designs he had come up with into functioning sensors that he could then put into other devices to help detect and potentially track down Mimic anyway. The sooner we had functional, reliable, and reproducible anti-Mimic tech, the sooner it could be distributed, and our team would no longer be the single point of failure for the operation.

I mean, I get why we have to be discrete about what we're doing right now, as even Jewel is like sixty percent sure that Mimic is at least occasionally infiltrating Restoration HQ. We're just not sure if he's using a single made up cover identity or if he just copies the appearance of a random member whenever he wants to stroll right in.

It's been very stressful for the Director, what with her trying to keep on top of this while also continuing her efforts to properly organize the Restoration's records, and now whatever is going on with this new partnership with CleanSweep. Which charged money for doing what the Restoration had been doing for free, which was ironically eating into the Restoration's budget as we were now getting less donations due to there being actual competition.

Sure, there were some services that the Restoration did charge for in order to bring in actual money, but post-battle clean-up and rebuilding homes and businesses was something that even the Resistance had done for free when it could, and the Restoration had continued that practice under Amy Rose when she had been the Director.

And now Jewel was carrying on that tradition, meaning that she had to deal with the same concerns that Amy (and even Knuckles before her) had to deal with about where to pull the resources from and how to pay for it all. Sure, volunteers were nice, but those became fewer over time as the gaps between Eggman's operations got longer and longer.

As much as we hated to admit it, we kind of depended on heroes like Sonic who were willing to step up and do their thing for free.

Even if he wasn't terribly reliable for anything else.

So the sooner we could take care of the whole issue with Mimic, the sooner we could remove at least part of the burden straining our current Director…

So, as much as I dislike the body dysphoria angle, it's sticks in the way of better character interaction or sonic dimension plot stuff. The "could have been worst breast weapons" is an interesting brain worm. Though would expect the gag to get worn fast if written out.

-Excerpt from issue one of Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome, by Ian Flynn
I will never fail to misread Ian Flynn's name as Ian Fleming every time I initially read it. I always read his name, think 'isn't that the James Bond guy? He worked on Archie Sonic?' And than realize I was missreading Ian Flynn's name AGAIN

That's why it's going to be a while before the next new breast related weapon system pops up in the story.

Rally is trying to not end up using them after all, even if it's her Tactical Operating System that pulls them out when it deems it necessary...

And some of those I'd have to be posting this story over on Questionable Questing in order to use anyway.

I will say that Rally has a head laser, as Metal Sally had used it in Archie comics. She just hasn't been in a situation where her TOS had decided that it was the most expedient weapon for the current threat yet.

That being said if Rally gets a Chaos Emerald and she needs lots of firepower, she is probably turning into Liquid Metal Rally and turning into a giant laser. Although it will work better the more chaos energy she has.

Do note Dr. Starine did the same upgrades to Rally that he did to Kitsunami and Surge ( save adding Elemental Powers as that would interfere with Rally Chaos energy based abilities). So Rally, Surge and Kit can be considered Belle siblings as they are based on her design and have the same kind of artificial soul Belle has. Technically Rally is Belle older sister as she was both made by (several) Doctor Eggman and was made before Belle The Tinkerer.

So yes this means that technically Metal Sonic is Rally older brother. 😀
