Hmm, been too long since I read it so it may not be a specific weakness of Cthulhu's, so much as it is some weird property of the ocean itself blocking his and maybe other old whatsits powers.

No idea what the one primal mystery thing is but, somehow water beats psychic in Cthulhumon. Although he was actually trapped behind a big door the sailors accidentally opened, unintentionally accomplishing his cult's goal of freeing him. And then he got steamboat'd in the face which apparently knocked him out and he got dragged back down by Ryleh sinking again. There's got to be something about water that kept him from just swimming back up, right? Dunno what else would've kept him down.
I think that, again, he's probably been asleep on his own will because "the stars weren't right", and upon getting Steamboat'd he decided to "fuck this", abort this early rise and go back to sleep. At least that's the impression I've always gotten.

And I think the story saying water somehow overwhelms lord Squidragon means water overwhelms lord Squidragon but, maybe that's just me? At the very least, it seems like a less silly explanation than Cthulhu going from being quite thrilled to be free to sulking in bed for the next vignitillion years because he got hit with a little boat. :V

You ever woke up several hours before it was the time to get up, looked at the clock, realized that it's still five AM and went back to bed? That's what I think happened with Cthulhu, because I don't actually remember any mention of water affecting him in the books.

The thing about the water I quoted was straight out of the original The Call of Cthulhu tho. At least to me, the original story seems to imply that water has some power over him.

I always read that part about the waters cutting off the path to R'lyeh as being on R'lyeh's side. Aka it was the equivalent of him locking the door.

I dunno. When it comes to Lovecraft, my instinct is to attribute any such weirdness to the Abominations themselves and their inscrutable intentions, not to anything truly powerful being actually inconvenienced by something mundane. But I guess that's mine interpretation, and that's yours.
