Star Trek: Section 31 Movie Starring Michelle Yeoh Announced:

*shrug* The reviewer did draw parallels to James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which is, after all, about a black-ops team assembled solely for deniable operations that...uh, has fun?
It's also very critical of the US government and its actions worldwide, which I would be surprised if this movie echoes.

Here you go, an opposing review. Basically: It's stupid, it's goofy, and it's over the top, but if you can enjoy things like the Fast and Furious franchise without taking them seriously, you should be capable of doing the same with this too.

Star Trek: Section 31 is firing on all cylinders

Paramount Plus’ new Star Trek film: Discovery spinoff movie feels like the start of something better than another series.
The problem here is that the Fast and Furious exists in its own bubble, it's not connected to anything greater (as far as I'm aware, and if it is it's probably tonally similar stuff). Section 31 is.

Or to put it more plainly, if even the 9/11 truther movie (Into Darkness) recognises that they're mostly self defeating* evil we really don't need Star Trek: Suicide Squad.

*the biggest and most impactful thing they've ever done, discounting the Control shit, was the virus plot against the Founders, which is one part luck and one part them doing something that Starfleet medical/intelligence itself could have done.

My main review after watching is that it was mostly okay. Like, if you took the Blackjack BJ-1 and made it into a TV movie. It's reasonably competently made but there's not a lot there once you get past the action sequences. It's not the worst Trek film but it's certainly below average. I do appreciate that they're trying different ideas for the franchise to keep it from getting stale and to try to attract new audiences, and we'll see if that pays off on viewers coming for Yeoh.

My main thoughts:
1) It suffered from being cut down from a limited series, thanks to the COVID-related production delays resulting in Yeoh not being available for a series. The new characters are left too thin, as are the sketched themes about trying to move past and make amends for past actions.
2) There's definitely room in the Trek universe for a band of misfits flying around the Trek universe doing wacky intelligence stuff. Give me Agents of SHIELD but Trek.
3) On that same note, this should have just been Starfleet Intelligence, not Section 31. Which can be said for most Section 31 stuff.
4) Please keep hiring whoever did all the set and prop design, they were on point the whole time.
5) Please stop shooting fire out of things.

Is there a reason why they keep Empress Georgiou around?

Like, I like Michelle Yeoh, and I only watched the first season of Discovery, so maybe she mellowed out... but, uh, one of her first ecenes was her eating a sentient alien species? Which seems kinda not cool?
