Spreading Love and Justice at Sufficient Velocity (Magical Girl ideas and discussion)

USA, specifically Phoenix. I don't usually see Precure stuff at anime/nerd stores, and most people I know outside of the internet don't know what it is. Some of them have learned about it through Glitter Force, but that's not exactly the greatest introduction.

It doesn't help that outside of maybe three anime (Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Madoka Magica), magical girl stuff is pretty niche here. Most merchandise I see is for those shonen fighting anime. However, a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to find an artbook/how-to-draw book featuring two artists who worked on Precure, and there were lots of Precure drawings inside. However, the blurb on the back of the book was like, "Oh, these artists worked on Sailor Moon and My Hero Academia!" and didn't mention the Precure stuff at all.

I assume all this is because Precure doesn't have the nostalgia appeal that SM and CCS do, and also, a lot of the seasons don't have official subs (there are fansubs, though).

Honestly, it reminds me of Russia - however, ninety percent of the anime that Russian otaku watch is fandubs or fansubs.

I've been meaning to watch more Precure - Ironically because of Heartcatch's reputation, I've been kinda going out of my way to avoid that one, at least for now, to avoid falling into the trap of "watch the one everyone adores and stop there and miss out on all the other good stuff."

Problem is I'm really bad at like, fully watching even single-cour shows, let alone four-cour marathons like Precure seasons are. So I've watched only the first episodes of Princess, Star Twinkle, and Healin' Good, and gotten somewhere around five or six episodes deep into Tropical Rouge and nine or ten into Fresh before falling off, though those two at the very least I want to properly finish at some point because I really love the Fresh cast so far, and Tropical Rouge is just like, feels specifically tailored to cater to my aesthetic tastes lol.

But I have also been rather curious about Happiness Charge just by virtue of being able to like, find zero information on it relative to the others back when I went looking; feels like the cryptid of the Precure family, so now I'm curious lol, and it is kinda nice to still have one I can go into pretty blind without having picked up on stuff secondhand through fandom osmosis. So I may abstain from the quest due to that, but on the other hand depending on how disconnected it is from Hapcha's main story, I would still be down to follow and vote and stuff.

That stuff aside, as far as my own pitch from a few weeks back goes, I finally have at least one of the major hurdles cleared that I needed to, though there is still some stuff yet to do. And I've started drawing a new version of the island map! But it's gonna be An Undertaking yet, so not gonna be ready soon. ^^; And further complicating things is that I did kinda start on another quest in the meantime, (lesbian murder robot gets reactivated to help some people out of danger) so not sure how to juggle that, my personal stuff, and starting the Magical Girl one at the current moment, so it's not going to be for a while yet. But I am plugging away on setting up for it when I do have the chance, so it's not not going to happen, either.

Fresh is actually my favorite season (so far)! I love it so much 💕, especially Love and Setsuna. They are girlfriends, your honor.

As for HappinessCharge, it's kind of a black sheep in the Precure franchise. A lot of people don't like it, but I do. Honestly, there are much worse seasons out there (lookin at you, Tropical Rouge and Delicious Party). Still, if you want to watch Tropical Rouge, go for it. There are some fun characters, but Smile does the "just have fun with this season" thing way better imo. Asuka and Laura are great, though.

Yeah!
I'm particularly enjoying the dynamic between those two, and how it's complicated by Setsuna secretly being Eas. I thought they were setting her up for an eventual redemption arc, but someone in the know warned me not to get too passionate about her, sooo legit not sure what to expect but kinda bracing for impact. ^^;
(Pls don't tell me where that's headed)

Ahhh, I see. Well, I'm still interested!

Ooof ><;

Ahhh, huh. I heard Smile like, initially starts out as really goofy but then veers into some pretty intense stuff in the back half.
And yeah, Asuka's my favorite so far, totally not because I already had a flamingo-themed Magical Girl OC at the time and her existence felt like vindication, (or at least not just because of that, Asuka's genuinely really cool on her own merits too) and Laura's whole vibe is fun too. I support mermaid rights, but also mermaid wrongs lmao.

Yeah, it does, and I love it. The goofy stuff makes the dark moments stand out even more. There's a certain villain who, while acting playful, really isn't goofing around, and he can be pretty damn scary when he tries. I definitely recommend Smile.

(Smile was dubbed as Glitter Force, but even if you like dubs, I'd highly recommend watching the fansubs instead. Glitter Force cuts eight episodes and sets the series in America for whatever reason. It's like one of those 90s dubs that gives everyone an English name.)

That does feel like it kinda runs counter to the mission statement of "more chillaxed easygoing season" lol, but I'm intrigued. Still gonna save it for after the five I've started, but might bump it up the queue a bit.

Yeah, I heard about Glitter Force lol. Not a huge loss for me since I prefer subs anyway xD

Hey, Tropical Rouge is a perfectly comfy watch I'll have you know. Most relatable villains too, but that could just be me.
Yay!
And also mood, based on what I remember of them. ><;

Precure quest idea:

It takes place in the Happiness Charge continuity (because of the international Cures and fun worldbuilding ideas), though I've added some worldbuilding of my own creation to help things make more sense, and to shed some light on things that went untold in the actual season.

Would anyone be interested in a quest like this? I'm already doing my Pokémon quest, and it's only been up since Tuesday, so I shouldn't start a new one just yet. Still, I may do so in the future, so for now, I'm doing a little interest check.

Eh, maybe I should just bite the bullet and start this one. I think I can manage two quests at once, and it's not like my silly videos or web serial are going anywhere. I have so many ideas, and I'm so excited!

To be honest, I've been sad this afternoon, and I get sad a lot, probably because I have depression lol

So I should do something that makes me happy, right? And Precure makes me happy, as do quests. Plus, we need more Precure quests!

As long as I keep on trucking along while keeping my updates relatively short, I think I'll be able to do both quests.

I would actually hold off on doing quests until I feel like I have enough time and energy.

I just dropped in the first update of a new Magical Girl novella onto SV. This marks the first time as a writer that I've done a broad, deliberate study of a subgenre (in this case the litRPG-adjacent branch) and then tried to write a genre piece that played into its tropes. Constructive criticism would be very much appreciated, because I'm only about a third of the way through the actual writing and many aspects of the story are still taking shape.

Magical Girl Wiki Maiden also represents a step up in terms of effort from what I usually post on SV. In addition to the initial research, most of the content is second- or third-draft material rather than draft 1.5, the chapters themselves are longer than what I usually produce, and I took the unusual-for-me step of running the first chapter through a beta reader (Thanks, @ColdGoldLazarus ) before publishing it.

I've just backed a couple of magical girl projects on Kickstarter, and I thought I'd share the links in case anyone else was interesting in backing these projects.

The first project, Wheels and Roses, is a "Sailor Moon meets Roller Derby" YA animated coming-of-age series, with a style that looks a lot like Craig of the Creek. Indeed, it looks like the team has worked on Craig of the Creek! Anyway, this project is close to being funded, so it could do with a little push to get it over the line:

The second project is 24/7 Magical Maiden Mimi, a graphic novel about a boy who turns into a magical girl who's identity gets revealed to the public. As a magical girl, he gets the fame and admiration he's always dreamed of, but at what cost? Created by Mira Ong Chua, who has also done Goodbye Battle Princess Peony. This project is fully funded, but perhaps you might want to pre-order a copy of the book for yourself anyway.

That sounds cool. It sucks animation is so expensive

I have an idea for a sort of magical girl military sci-fi fantasy anime. It's called Maou Phenomena.

The MC is more of a silent but deadly character than your usual cutesy deredere "rabu-rabu"-type magical girl MC you'd find in most anime in this genre. Instead of fighting with a wand and a cute little fairy creature, she fights with a giant laser cannon and the soul of a priest trapped in a doujin comic. Her crush can transform into a helicopter. The rogues gallery consists of literal Satan, a robot maid, the "princess complex" girl at her school, an Arab girl she used to go to elementary school with in Italy, a corrupt CEO of a media corporation, an army of child soldiers that parody that "cutesy deredere 'rabu-rabu'-type magical girl" I mentioned earlier, a landowner from during the Salem Witch Trials, and a hell of a lot more. And not only that, but she also happens to be a ticking time bomb for Armageddon.

This anime would have violence. As much of it as Japanese TV broadcasters will allow.

So... whaday'all think?

Ah. That's an anime I'll enjoy watching sometime soon.
I mean that depends, to me it's a guilty pleasure show because of how gratuitous it is at times. I also think a story about the war itself would be more interesting, but I'm not confident enough in my abilities to cover that yet.

Was that because of the anime adaptation messing it up or because it's a complete story?

Speaking of which, I have a dilemma. I want to write a fanfic for MGSOA, but through very long winded reasons the lore I've come up with would put it into "so AU it might as well be OC" territory. However, I am using canon characters and plot as a template, and MGSO isn't exactly DBZ in Latin America so I don't think many people would care if I'm basically putting these characters on another planet. Do I keep it a fanfic or put it in original writing.

More the latter than the former, although the budget limitations hurt too.

And if you are going that far off the rails without a clear in-story route to same, go for Original Fiction. I remember Embers and you do not want to Go There.
