Spirits of Europa, an Exorcist Quest

You have successfully dissipated the spirit of the rattle, and gained it as an investigatable artifact, as well as your payment from the curiosity shop. You also have an absolute disaster in your office, though. Personal stats updated.
It's probably a good idea to stop choosing jobs with an artifact as a reward- they seem to be more than one-and-done affairs.

Also, between needing to regain health, lose dread and clean our office, some coin (and action) expenditures are in order as well.

I agree, we should focus on high paying jobs for a while. At least until we've managed to build up a decent nest egg for emergencies. As it is we hardly have enough to pay rent this month...

Personal Turn Week 3: March 24-30, 1907
Health Recovery Roll: 14-5 (A disaster in the office)=9.

The bruises have begun to fade, and while they'll probably look nasty for a couple weeks yet, the pain is gone and it's just a matter of waiting. Health fully restored!

You'll need to pick a job for the week:
[ ] [Job] An animal products company has run into difficulties renegotiating their exorcism contract for their Zurich slaughterhouse. Talks are ongoing, but until then somebody has to do the monthly exorcism to keep the spirits to a manageable level. Job will disappear this week! Rewards: 3 Coin
-[ ] [Job] The city's gotten reports from some miffed families about a cemetery spirit keeping them awake at night and scaring the dogs. The city council thinks it's probably a vagrant or thief, not a spirit, but some of the families are the kind of busybodies that are names in local politics. They're hiring you on the cheap just to reassure the families. And hey, if there is a spirit, you're the right person for the job. Job will remain for 2 turns. Rewards: 1 Coin, Contact
[ ] [Job]Investigate 515 Brehmgartnerstrasse: This strange property has intrigued you. Surely there must be something worth learning inside. This job doesn't expire, but you'd best be prepared. Rewards: ???
-[ ] [Job] On second thought, you've got personal business to take care of this week. Rewards: 1 Personal Action

By the Twins, your last job left this place a disaster. You're going to need some serious elbow grease to get the stains and smell out. Until this is fixed, you're not going to have much luck recovering.
-[ ] [Office] Dread: You can't afford a cleaning company; you'll just have to do it yourself. Cost: 1 Dread
-[ ] [Office] Coin: You'll hire some laborers and buy some soap and rags. Cost: 1 Coin

Of course, you've also got the usual weekly errands to run and time to kill.
You may pick any 3 options (+1 if you chose Personal Business for your job). Plan voting is allowed; voting will close in 48 hours. Current holdings: 5 Coin. Rent is due at the end of the Week: 5 Coin required!!

[ ] Odd Jobs: It stings, but you'll need to do some manual labor to make ends meet. Rewards: 1 Coin
[ ] Wander the City: You've not spent much time in Zurich before. Get to know your new hometown.
[ ] Visit the Exorcist's District: The best shops (for exorcists, at least) in Cantonia, perhaps even all Europa, are here in Zurich, and you'd like to find some. The entrance fee stings, but it's how the District ensures they only get serious customers. Cost: 1 Coin.
[ ] Get to Know your Neighbors: The MacCoulloughs have warmed up enough to not be actively avoiding you, but if you want any kind of rapport with them it'll take more time.
[ ] Spruce up the Bedroom: A bed and chair is great, but you could really use some curtains and a table. Maybe a rug.
-[ ] Silverware: This would make a nice addition to your table. Cost: Silverware.
-[ ] Buy some curtains: This'll help you sleep later into the morning after long nights out. Cost: 1 Coin.
[ ] Put the Word Out: A sign is great, but to get your name out to greater Zurich you'll need something more. Cost: 2 Coin. With rent coming due, you're going to avoid any unnecessary expenditures given you're right on the edge of being unable to pay. Perhaps next month.
[ ] Visit the Pawn Shop: You've got some items you'd like to sell, and while you're there you can browse for interesting pieces.
-[ ] Silverware: You'd like something more easy to trade with than some silver forks. Reward: 2 Coin.
-
[ ] A Watchmaker's Tools: This set of implements was once used for building and maintaining the delicate machinery of pocketwatches. But tools so fine have other uses, as well... Reward: 3 Coin.
[ ] Petty Pleasures: You need something to take your mind into brighter thoughts. A visit to a local bar or two, perhaps some light card games. Cost: 1 Coin. Reward: Bonus to Dread recovery roll.
[ ] Library Browsing: Surely, among all the knowledge in Zurich, something interesting could pop up.
[ ] Investigate an Artifact: Something in your possession is interesting, showing either a possible use or a hint of something... more.
-[ ] Meyers' Watch: You've uncovered a strange combination lock hidden inside the watch, but you have no idea what the code might be. Pay a visit to the Meyer sisters-- perhaps they could give you a hint.
-[ ] A Rattle: A little research ought to tell you what the history of this rattle is, if you can get a name from the curiosity shop. What gave this rattle its possession, and why the rattle as opposed to the rest of the estate?

A/N: Sorry for the slow update, but I'm now officially co-writing For the Tyrants Fear Your Might, a cyberpunk space opera, and consulting on maps for the Ymaryn Successor Quest by Aranfan. Finally, there's a new discord in the works for vaguely leftist authors and works, and once I get a channel and role for this quest sorted out I'll drop an invite for any of y'all that wish to ask random questions or talk shit. Might even get some worldbuilding out of me! :V

Okay, let's finish the high paying job while we still can, and work on some more busywork in the meantime.

With rent coming up I don't wanna spend any money we don't need to, so instead I am going to focus on fixing up the stuff we have already started on. Spruce up the house a bit more, finish investigating the watch, then we go back to exploring our new hometown. Finally, I do have a question for our esteemed QM @Cyanblackstone I noticed we need to collect 'Fragments' to improve our skills. Would you be willing to elaborate on how we get those, or would you prefer to take more ques from cultist simulator and make us figure it out on our own?

I really don't want to worsen our Dread damage, as only 3 points separate us from madness. With cleaning ourselves, all it takes for a game over is a 1 or 2 on a Dread Resist Roll. Also, the job seems routine enough for paying rent on time to be almost certain.

Overall, this plan focuses on getting some mystical power. We have two artifacts which could end up very useful in our job (or get sold for nice buck), and also potentially some library Fragments (I assume that's the purpose of Library, anyway- a roll for Fragments?) to eventually buy a new school level.

Unusual spirits, artifacts, books, or meetings will get you Fragments.

These aren't suboptions, so they likely don't need to start with a hyphen.

Do you want votes in plan format, or by line? I personally dislike plan voting, but it might make sense given that actions are using a resourse from a common pool.

Maybe we can sell off an artifact now that it isn't dangerous anymore?

would cleaning ours home rise ours dread?
The cost is indicated in the option.

Either works, but plan voting is the standard previous votes have taken.

They started with a hyphen because I changed my formatting and forgot to delete the hyphen >>

Yes.

You accept the job, with a hefty contract on the insistence of the negotiating union that says, among other things, that this is a one-time job. Losing a future potential customer is a bit annoying, but being labelled a scab by the Minor Exorcists' Association would be worse.

The warehouse manager comes in after the contract is signed, and gives you a handdrawn map to the warehouse and a short rundown of what to expect. This is a very routine job; the slaughterhouse is just outside of town. They practice the best animal care and painless killing techniques to minimize spirit formation, but nevertheless sheer volume gets weak spirits forming about once a month. It's been an extra week due to the drawn-out negotiations, but the manager assures you it shouldn't make that much of a difference. Forms taken before include giant animals, species hybrids (usually sheep-cow, pig-cow, or sheep-pig), or formless poltergeists. None of them have posed a special danger to staff or equipment, but can disturb sensitive animals during the slaughter process... which adds to the spirit's strength, which then distresses more animals, and so on.

The pay is actually slightly greater than what the advertisement offered, and you ask about it. The manager confesses that's a reimbursement for new clothes. Whatever you take will come away smelling... worse for wear, he says.

Good to know. You'll leave your habit at home and bring some of your most-used clothes, you suppose.

This is a straightforward job, but you'll want to prepare an approach:

[ ][Job] Talk: Unless there's some secret graves under the slaughterhouse, talking to the spirit of meat animals is not likely to be productive.
[ ] [Job] Trap: On the other hand, something lacking more human cunning might find itself easy prey to a mystical circle or something simple.
[ ][Job] Brawl: Punch some post-mortem meat with a mind of its own.
[ ][Job] Mystic: Ritual sacrifice for meat has been a thing since the dawn of recorded history for exactly this reason, especially when all you had was a stone knife. Time to break out the historical religious treatises debating which rituals were best and pick one.

-[X] [Office] Coin: You'll hire some laborers and buy some soap and rags. Cost: 1 Coin

You really don't want to deal with two stinky, bloody messes this week. You pay the piper and hire some local laborers and cleaning supplies, and spend your day at the library instead.

Your office has been cleaned. 1 Coin lost.

-[X] Investigate an Artifact: Something in your possession is interesting, showing either a possible use or a hint of something... more.
--[X] Meyers' Watch: You've uncovered a strange combination lock hidden inside the watch, but you have no idea what the code might be. Pay a visit to the Meyer sisters-- perhaps they could give you a hint.

You pay a visit to the Meyers' home, and while surprised to see you, you explain that you wished for their advice on the watch they'd used to pay you. You show them the hidden lock, and they're instantly intrigued. They invite you in for tea, and while you enjoy a cup (it's been made quite well), they poke and prod, trying different combinations.

Two cups later, you hear a click. "Got it!" one of the sisters exclaims. "It was his favorite symphonies." They hand you the locket and scribble down the combination as you carefully open the mechanism.
Inside is a faded daguerrotype, of what you presume is Meyers and a woman who-- you glance up at the Meyers sisters-- is definitely not their mother. Too young. As well as a note. Carefully unfolding it, you read a small essay on the beauties of clockwork. On the back of the note is a small poem, comparing the circles of gears to the circles of life.

The Meyers sisters peer at you eagerly from behind their cups and saucers. This is no doubt a valuable piece of their father's life and legacy-- but is it one they want to know?

[ ] [Watch] Show them everything. It rightfully belongs to them, even if the truth might hurt.
[ ] [Watch] Give them only the note. It's poignant, and you're sure they'd love to have this. Keep their memories of their old man good.
[ ] [Watch] Tell them it was empty-- perhaps he never got around to filling it. You'd hate to slander a dead man's image to his children.

This decision will affect your reward.

-[X] A Rattle: A little research ought to tell you what the history of this rattle is, if you can get a name from the curiosity shop. What gave this rattle its possession, and why the rattle as opposed to the rest of the estate?
-[X] Library Browsing: Surely, among all the knowledge in Zurich, something interesting could pop up.

Roll: 9 + 5(At the Library) = 14

You secure the name of the previous owner from the curiosities dealer: Zumwald. At the library, you pore through the newspaper archives, and soon find several articles. First, a short notice on the auction of the estate, from two weeks ago. Then, a larger article from several months prior about a criminal verdict.

The Zumwalds were apparently a happy family of three until one night a couple years ago, Mr. Zumwald killed Mrs. Zumwald and baby Zumwald. The case against him has recently concluded in a guilty verdict, and a lifetime stay in Zurich canton's prison. The details of the case have largely been kept from the public, but bits and pieces allege to some sort of religious killing. There are mentions of a "ritual," but that's it. You're left with almost as many questions as before you started your investigation.

Due to your time in the library, your investigation has proceeded quickly. You will be able to complete this action this week.

[ ] [Rattle] See if you can't cajole your way into getting less-redacted court documents.
[ ] [Rattle] A trip to the grave sites of the Zumwalds, which is public information unlike the rest of this strange case, with the rattle might turn something up.
[ ] [Rattle] You could try to get it from the source-- Mr. Zumwald himself. Arrange a prison visit.

A/N: Here's the link to the Discord I was talking about last update: come chat! There's several other quests, among them Laurent's quests and the other quest I'm working on, For the Tyrants Fear Your Might. Voting will close in 24 hours.

I think I know the general rewards here:
- Showing them everything will spoil the memory of their father. Giving some of it away may lessen the pain. Artifacts.
- Keep them happy, and they'll happily reward you. Money.
- Show little, get little. Some money?
Both for narrative and (suspected) mechanical reasons, I want them to know the truth. The old man put it there- it's his burden to bear. And now, theirs.
[X] [Watch] Show them everything. It rightfully belongs to them, even if the truth might hurt.

Playing to our strengths.

If there's one person who should know what kind of ritual was it, then it's got to be the man who did it.

Always happy to see this quest update, here's my vote this time around.

[X][Job] Brawl: Punch some post-mortem meat with a mind of its own.
[X] [Watch] Show them everything. It rightfully belongs to them, even if the truth might hurt.
[X] [Rattle] You could try to get it from the source-- Mr. Zumwald himself. Arrange a prison visit.

Now while we could go do our job with research in hand and professionalism abound... this isn't a contract job. This is a one-off job, that is notably easy and we don't need to care about the details of how it gets done. Why not have some fun with it? Let's do some guilt free ghost punching! We can save the mysticism for more complicated jobs.

As for the rattle and watch? I agree with Zephyr's logic, and I always love to fuel the narrative. Telling the sisters the truth and arranging a prison visit seem like the best ways to do that.

...haaaaaaaaaah, I'd rather not do it, but if our character's religion dictates that we tell the truth, so be it.

...does her religion say so?

The Twins don't care much. The Sun would prefer you tell the truth, but the Moon would prefer you be kind. Either way, shrug
