Checking the paper that you had been given, you make your way through the hangar bay to the location of your fighter. The thrill of anticipation begins to run through you, the moment growing nearer. It's one thing to approach a fighter for a simple training exercise, but quite another when you know that this will be the vessel that will carry you through your tour of duty. Well, hopefully. You'd rather not get shot down if you can help it.
You walk past maintenance crews, the clanging of tools and the sound of flames. Spark burst forth and rain onto the ground from welding, flickers of light that add to the atmosphere and highlight just how busy this place is. It's a reminder that even with the lack of action right now, there is still a war going on.
But you leave that behind for the moment as you, at last, arrive at your craft. The Guardian, not exactly the Defender class, but it's been battle tested just as much. Yellow and Grey, seemingly new and not used. To your relief, since you would rather not have a fighter with previous attachments to it.
With the ladder lowered, you are able to clamber up and into the cockpit, the shape of the seat familiar, if not this particular one. Your gaze scans the dials, gauges, and readouts as you recall what you know of this fighter. If you're going to be flying it, then you have to know as much about it as you can, in the end.
The Guardian class fighter. Capable of both flight in space and in an atmosphere, it is known for it's armor and hitting power. Equipped with two autoseek missile launchers, which fire missiles containing onboard targeting software to lock on to an enemy while in flight, and one Firebolt Launcher, a timed explosive that stuck to Manti and took out any of the Bugs nearby. Not bad for a single ship.
You take a few minutes looking it over, and thinking about the possible things you could do with it. It isn't the Defender, but it will work just as well. There are still some personal touches that you could make to it if you wanted, but that can wait for a later time. You have other things to worry about at the moment.
Specifically, your pager going off and summoning you to your fighter. Well, luckily for you you happen to already be there. You quickly put on your helmet, activating the internal comm in the process.
The hiss of the pressure seal engaging covers up a bit of the audio, but you quickly get in on the conversation. "
...Sorry to have to do this to you rookies, but this came in on short notice, and you're the first force we can get out there."
Somehow that doesn't sound like a good thing, but you get to work, booting up the fighter to go out. The hatch lowers into place as the instruments and controls light up, showing you that the fighter is in well enough condition for the mission. Which is certainly a relief.
As you do that, the controller goes on. "
You'll be deploying to a cluster of civilian facilities on Deimos. A group of Manti made it past the fleet's defensive net, and are coming down hard. You'll have to hold them off until reinforcements can arrive and drive them off. Any questions?"
It seems straightforward enough, but surely there are some things you might want to ask that could be relevant to the mission ahead.

With the abrupt briefing concluded, there is nothing to do but to get going. The Manti certainly aren't going to wait for you to show up, so you shouldn't delay too much in heading you.
You can feel the engine hum behind you, the powerful engines ready to push you away and take you to where you need to go. Not as fast as the Defender, but you can take more of a punch. And it's a comfort to feel the armor plating surrounding you and protecting you from harm.
Maneuvering thrusters fire on a low burn, and the engine pushes you forward out of the hangar onto the runway, just in time to see one of your squad mates launch off into the sky, quickly vanishing into the ring hanging in the air, the center of which is a swirling blue. A Gate, and your ticket to Deimos in a relatively rapid manner.
In your ear you can hear comm chatter, the rest of your squad going on about the mission and preparation type things like that. Nothing immensely interesting, but you pay half attention anyway, just in case.
"
See you on the other side," Thompson calls before vanishing through. Comms integrity does maintain itself between Gates, but without you actually being there it might not be the best time to speak.
You flip over to another channel to hear the flight controller, and proceed to maneuver your ship onto the runway, primed and ready to take to the skies on the back of thrusters and anti-grav technology. It's a lot easier than the old methods of flying, though going through a Gate is easier when you have some speed. But that shouldn't be a problem.
"
Guardian One One Seven, you may launch when ready." With the confirmation from the flight controller. It's time to get going.
