Silent Hill: Vacation Getaway

EXAMINATION: MADAME A. DARK'S CHARTS
Let's examine those posters and charts, could have some useful information.

It's an interesting assortment of traditional horoscope charts and similar occult accouterments, strange advertisements for products like Magnetized Water, and things you cannot make heads or tails of. On several of the posters, Madame Dark's name is given as "Madame Astarte Dark" so now you know what the 'A.' stands for. (One could say you know her full given name, but come on, this woman's parents didn't name her "Astarte Dark". ) These posters also identify her as a 'Spiritual Medium', 'Doctor Practitioner of Animal Magnetism', 'Cartomancer and Rhabdomancer' and 'Professor of Hermetic Arts'. This is in addition to her constant listing as "Illustrated Lady" and "Dust Witch".

So... a woman of varied talents.

[X] Yes. Somehow you think this is a deal you're not going to get from this woman in normal circumstances, and she might just reveal what she knows about Gemma during the reading.

IN THE CARDS
"Ummm, sure, I'll take a reading," you mutter, sticking your hands in your pockets. Your hand winds up sliding over the little winged deer figurine, and you consider asking about it, but Madame Dark is shuffling the deck so intently you decide not to. She tosses a ring of dust on the table, then pulls a card out with a flourish. "This is you!" she declares, showing an image of a youth of indeterminate gender about to walk off a cliff, the wording under it declaring the card to be "LE FOL".

"This covers you!" she declares, producing a strange card you've never seen before, showing an eye staring out of the night sky, 'L'OEIL DU NUIT'. "This crowns you!" she continues. A woman, wrestling with a lion, labeled'FORCE' with the number XXIII. "This is beneath you!" she declares, producing a card of another androgynous figure, this one wearing a crown, being pulled in a chariot by a pair of red horses, labeled 'LE CHARIOT'. "This is behind you!" she shouts, putting down a strange card of what looks like bubbles before a purple field labeled 'L'ETHER'. "This is before you!" She reveals the Hanged Man card, labeled 'LE PENDU'. "This guides you!" she declares, revealing a card labeled 'CHARITE' and numbered XXIX with a woman with a glowing halo, a fire in her right hand."This is one who influences you!" revealing a card labelled "LA PAPESSE" numbered II that looks a great deal like 'The High Priestess'."These are your hopes and fears!"she says, showing 'LE ESTOIRE', which shows a man on horseback looking up at a large star in the sky. "And here's how it all ends!" she finishes, producing, "LA MORT", which shows a skeleton holding a scythe and riding a rotting horse.

She settles down on her chair, and regards the reading. "Hmmmm. Not such a bad reading, really." She scratches her flank. "And what does it mean, you ask? Why that from the dust you come and to the grave you go, dearie."

You gulp slightly. "That's... urrr... nice," you mutter. "Now about Gemma...?"

"Her?" snaps Madame Dark. "A nobody. Of no account. 'Tis yourself you must worry for, for you live under the eyes of the perytons, the fraud-beasts, the shadow-things, those which look upon humanity with envy, and murderous, gluttonous desire." She turns around suddenly, a card twirling in her hands. It shows a chubby thing that looks like a strange combination of man and pig shoveling food into its gaping maw. It is labeled "GOURMANDISE", and numbered XVIII. "They hunger, and they will feed, girl. Oh, shall they feed." She flashes you a ruin of a smile, showing you those broken, rotting teeth. "Feed on lives, feed on hopes, feed on dreams, feed on it all, until nothing's left but the rind..."

You nod, and start backing out of the trailer. "That... thank you for the warning..."

Madame Dark cackles at that. "Oh, spare me your gratitude, child. You should fear me more than you fear them. For as the curtain is opened, and the show begins, I take my place." She stands up, head lolling on her shoulders in a rather distressing manner, and turns towards you. "For if it is not clear to you, child," she declares, hand twirling, "I am the villain of this piece." And another card has appeared in her hand 'LE DIABLE', showing a goat-headed devil with a woman's breasts, a desperate man and woman

She takes a single step towards you, licking her lips. Her tongue, you note, is a discolored black, same as her lips.

What now?

[ ] Run. Run. Run as fast as you can. Run.

[ ] Try to maybe reason with her or flatter her or something. You might be able to talk her down from killing you.

[ ] ...You know what? Screw this fear. You're going out like a champ. Draw some sort of weapon, and go at her. A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

You need to lay off bismuth products, lady.

[x] ...You know what? Screw this fear. You're going out like a champ. Draw some sort of weapon, and go at her. A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

What's a better start of the day than murdering a carnival performer over a scare?

I'm sure this won't go terribly wrong.

SCREW YOUR COURAGE TO THE STICKING PLACE!
And suddenly, a voice in the back of your head tells you that you will not be pushed around by a sideshow performer, who seems to be... well, on something. Pulling out your grandmother's tailor shears, you grip them in hand and snarl at Madame Dark. "Listen, you...", you begin, stepping forward.

It would be nice to say "Madame Dark stops you with a wave of her hand," because that would imply some minimum of effort on her part. Instead she... idly wiggles some fingers, her hand remaining limp at her side, and you are floating in place unable to move. Madame Dark yawns and moves forward, her motions slow and strangely... twitchy. You see her skin is sickly pale, almost jaundiced seeming, with unhealthily sweaty sheen to it. She reaches you and gives another awful, ruined smile. She raises her left hand slowly and then wiggles her little finger to mimic a wave. "Buh-bye," she says softly. And then you are hurtling backwards, backwards, the carnies horrible inhuman forms as you rush past, laughing at you, and back, back, back, and then...

You slam into a tree. The pain startles you for a moment and then... you are... losing focus and...

DARKNESS

You come to, a sound not unlike a siren in your ears. Glancing around, you see the tree you struck is... rather large, and strangely unpleasant looking. Your encounter with Madame Dark and her carnival has taken on a rather strange dreamlike cast. You are starting to wonder if you dreamed the entire thing, after blundering into the tree. Indeed, looking around, you notice the path you took to it is gone. You don't know how long you passed out, though it doesn't seem to have been long. You figure you should get back to the others. And possibly get driven to a hospital to make sure you don't have a concussion.

You walk unsteadily to where the car was... and it is still there, with a wheel off. "Hey guys, is Gemma ba...?" You pause. Gemma does not appear to be back. In fact, Mel also appears to be gone. Courtney still rests on the log where you and the others dragged her earlier. You decide that she might be able to help you. "Hey, Courtney, do you know what happened to Mel?" You give her a shake. "Courtney are you...?"

She topples off the log. Courtney, your longtime best friend, appears to be dead, her face frozen in an expression of horror. As you are trying to deal with this, you hear the sound of a car approaching down the highway.

What now?

[ ] Wave it down. You need help, and a ride into Silent Hill.

[ ] Head into the bushes, and let the car pass by. You don't need any more trouble right now.

[ ] You know, there's something to be said for curling into a ball and sobbing to yourself when life gets too cuckoo.

[ ] OTHER
