Silence is Not Consent

Honestly, I imagine Brian is going to be mad about what Aisha did, and feel he has even less control about everything. I think when the chips are down he'd follow her, but I'm not imagining him to be happy about it.

Right. It's worth remembering that most of the Undersiders aren't actually in it to be Villains.
  • Bitch only cares about her dogs. If the state offered to pay her to run a dog shelter, on the condition that she stopped doing crimes, she'd be all in.
  • Brian wants to protect Aisha and improve his community. His goals are actively easier to accomplish if he's not a villain, doubly so if he can get any support from the State.
  • Tattle tale was mainly in it to not get shot/not get drugged up and locked up in Coils dungeon.
  • Taylor is Taylor.
They're all uncomfortable with the unmasking thing, for obvious reasons, but sans that, what Tori's offering them ranges from neutral to a significant step up.

Unfortunately, she didn't know about Alek's father, which makes unmasking a MUCH bigger problem for him. If she had known, and was able to get over the Heart breaker connection, this is probably relatively easy to solve, since the PRT doesn't want one of Heart Breaker's kids in the wind and they Definitely don't want daddy dearest paying a visit. So, if they're on board with the rest of the plan, they'd probably be similarly on board for giving him an out that still protects his identity and avoids those landmines.

Or Conflict Drives subtly pushing everyone into making sure nobody can have nice things. Co-operation is bad! Only Fighting gives best [DATA]! Rrar!
Conflict Drive like that is overhyped. 90% of the 'Conflict Drive' is just Shards picking unstable people who will use powers given to them to do things that unstable people will do. Sure some shards put pressure on their hosts, but that's mostly Leet's shard trying to kill him and Panacea's shard getting bored. (OTOH you have Conflict Engines making sure no large scale organization goes on, but that's literally Endbringers)

It also probably covers some more subtle stuff, like powers working slightly better when used in creative ways or in stressful conditions, which is likely to translate into conditioning parahumans to seek or cause conflict.

Future Plans
So I'm gonna be blunt. I can't keep writing and updating on this schedule. Or any, for that matter. Between the expectations of writing, the scope of the story, my personal issues, and my own mental health... I just can't. I deal with the subjects of this story in a professional capacity for a job. I love doing it, and I love writing this, but it's burning me out at both ends. There's eight or so chapters left, we're finally getting to some of the scenes I've been looking forward to for the whole fic, and I'm not excited or motivated or moved at all. I refuse to taint something I've put this much work into by writing the most important parts out of obligation rather than heart.

So I'm stepping away. I'm going to write all of the remaining chapters on my own before posting anything, and edit them, before I release everything. I didn't realize just how much having a buffer let me feel a sense of freedom and flexibility in my process until it was gone. I can't tell you when I'll start posting again. SiNC will be finished, and I'm hoping it'll be this year. As for the rest... this was always meant to read as a standalone work. I want to want to write it. I'll see if I can get there. Thank you for the support.

It is cool, justanothercat, it is fine. We appreciate what you have written so far, and it is easy for us to follow the thread for whatever comes in the future.

Frankly, I recommend you write some snippets for fun, completely different content, to destress over the coming months. Stick those in a thread for the public, or repurpose those ideas for later fics. We like your work and want you to be happy. Don't ever gamble against burnout, because we won't feel the consequences like you will.

Honestly, as much as I like reading this story, I'd much prefer you to take care of yourself instead. Even if you end up abandoning this story, it'll only be a drop in the ocean. Get yer self settled, and then decide how you wanna spend your time.

Take all the time you need! It's more important that you're feeling the love for it than pumping out the story out of obligation.

It's alright! Take care of yourself. A story is just that, a story. Your health, both emotional and physical, is more important. Take as long as you need, and there's no shame if you want to leave the story unfinished. It's a heavy story, after all. Writing such heavy subjects is always taxing.
