[X] Rosso Lupin
It is another lovely day in the city of Vale. The sun is rising up into the sky with nary a cloud to be seen, and a pleasant breeze to go with it. It's the perfect environment to go out and do some work so you can make a living.
At the moment you are enjoying breakfast in a small cafe that you like to frequent, a breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee made with a premium Vacuo blend. Needless to say it's not exactly on the cheap side of things.
Also held in your hand right now is the morning paper, delivering all the news you could ever need about Vale. Of course there's television, but there's too much government crap in it to really get a fair picture. Even if there's a bunch of stuff you know that the papers can't put in here either.
The front page is splashed with the usual sort of thing. The markets are down again today, Some new play called House of Glass premiered downtown and is currently earning the praises of the critics, and the Bruisers lost their match against the Seadogs. Which sucks, because you had money going on that match. Just goes to show that you shouldn't place your trust in athletes.
Then there is, of course, the good stuff. Tragedy makes for good headlines,so the papers are attracted to crime and disaster like a moth to a flame. Some day your name is going to be up here, and when that day comes it is going to feel very good. So long as you stay out of the obituaries anyway, though that should come as a given.
There isn't anything particularly outstanding to you this time. A small attempt at arson on a warehouse across town, somebody pulling a hit and run on the house of a city bureaucrat with a couple machine guns, a police bust on a small Faunus trafficking ring, that sort of thing. It's also filled with noble statements about how the police are doing their best to protect people and stop crime. Which itself is a load of crap since at least half the police force is in the pocket of the criminals they're supposedly trying to stop. But no one wants to talk about that.
Overall it means that the city is fairly quiet, with nobody making moves on anyone else. A relative calm with how tense things are starting to get, even if it means the shoe is going to drop sooner or later.
"Just a normal day after all," you mutter to yourself as you leave the news behind and flip to the crossword section. There's nothing like a brain teaser to get you going in the morning.
You're just puzzling through the name of the Mistrali practice of formal arrangements for testing wine when you get a phone call. "Torchwick here," you say as you flip the phone open. This had better be good, this early in the morning.
"Boss, the ship just radioed in. They're gonna be here in an hour or so." That would be one of your subordinates down at the docks, whose name escapes you. You've been waiting on a shipment of goods to arrive from Mistral, and it seems that it's about time for it to show up. With how the Grimm are you can't really expect a schedule to stay intact, but sometimes it does work out.
Well, an hour is fine. You'll be able to finish your breakfast and get down there in time for the shipment. Who knows, you might even be able to complete the crossword too. There's a first time for everything.
Tapping your chin, you nod to yourself. "Alright, hold down the fort. I'll be there soon." With that you hang up and return to what you were doing. You still have a few minutes to spare.
You make sure to leave a gracious tip when you leave, which you're sure your server will appreciate. Tipping well is a sign of class, at least in your mind, and it never hurts to be kind to a place you like to visit often. That way you're sure to get good service there.
With a wave to the establishment in general you head out the door and down towards the docks. There are a lot of people out and about today, and you weave through the crowds without pause. They've got things to do in their boring and mundane lives, but you've got more important business to handle.
The docks of Vale are a sprawling affair, home to countless warehouses full of goods, berths for a myriad of ships, as well as construction yards for making new vessels The place is a hub of activity pretty much every day, and there's always something going on here. If you want something close to the vein of the city, this would be the starting point.
You don't head for the big facilities though. Those are reserved for people more influential than you. Instead you move to one of the older port facilities off to the north, one of the ones that has not been fortunate enough to receive an upgrade with the growing prosperity of the city.
As a result, this port usually ends up handling the people who don't have spare disposable income to throw around. Shocking, for those who don't understand how the economy works.
It does mean that this is a good place for smuggling to happen, since it gets looked at less intensely. There is a problem of scale since it's not one of the major facilities, and transportation can be difficult at times, but some flow of goods is better than none.
When you arrive, you can see the ship off in the distance, angling towards the dock. As you expected it is a cargo ship, on the smaller side and ostensibly carrying consumer goods and certain foodstuffs. Which is true, there's just some more specialty items in there that the people you work for want.
"Hey boss." One of your underlings, Charlie, comes to a stop nearby. He's been at this job a hell of a lot longer than you have, and he's good at what he does. He just lacks that ambition to really excel in your eyes.
You nod to the pudgy faced man as you watch the ship moving inexorably closer. "Charlie, how are we doing?" You haven't had any problems with this sort of thing before, it's best not to start now and change that fact.
His hands rest in his pockets as he regards the ship as well. "She's making good time, and the boys are all ready to get to work offloading the delivery when she gets here. You want us to do anything special for this one?"
You rub your chin, thinking it over. You could always just do what you've done before, but that might not get you any stronger for the goals that eventually want to accomplish. There are possibilities here, you just have to be willing to take the risk of acting for your own benefit. Sure it offers dangers, but it could help you.
So you tell him....
[ ] Keep everything the same as normal and by the book. There's no point in sticking your neck out yet
[ ] 'Appropriate' a bit of the shipment for yourself. You can earn some money selling it, though if your actual customers notice they might not be very happy with you.
[ ] Stall, delay, and otherwise don't be as good as normal. That way you can 'persuade' the people transporting to make a deal with you so things run smoother.
