You are a suit, that's how you think of yourself. You are not a person, you are not a detective and you are not suspicious. You are a bland suit, a box ticker. "Masuda-san." You sit down opposite him, take a long sip of your coffee. "Can I get you a beverage?"
"I really just want to get this over with and go home." He rubs his eyes. "It's very late, and I have a lot to do tomorrow."
"I understand. This should all be quite routine."
"I already gave a statement to the police. Isn't that sufficient?"
"Ah. I'm afraid not. You know how the company is, never do a thing once when you can do it twice."
"Ain't that the truth?" He sighs and leans back. "Alright, hit me with your first question."
"Are you sure you won't have that coffee?" You say it again, seeking to stretch out his attention. To make him want to answer you more just to get this over with, while at the same time keeping your tone friendly."
"You know what, I suppose I will." He rubs his eyes again. You open your augmented reality system and call for a coffee and a case of donuts. Masuda eyes them as a drone brings them in. "Those things are terrible for your waistline." He comments.
"I'm young and security work makes it easy to stay fit." You shrug. "We have mandatory runs and gym exercises to stay in shape. Not that it works for everyone."
"You internal security pukes get all of the perks." He grins, then takes a donut and sips at his coffee. You once again pause, deliberately not asking him the question as you munch. As you hoped, Masuda breaks the silence first: "You wanted to ask me about what happened?"
"Yes." You make a show of bringing up the police statement in front of you, scan it, then put it down. "So, your statement from the police says that you put out the report to a security alert at 8:19."
"Yeah. I was on the server floor and the system alerted me that someone had accessed the servers."
"The other technicians say that they didn't see any alert."
"I guess the runner locked out the system, but not the telltales local to the server. I could see the AR because I was down on that floor."
"And what were you doing down there?"
"I was taking a stroll. I'm trying to stay in shape. It's way more difficult at my age. I want to get my steps in every day."
"Well, it's working." You smile at him a bit. He's not unfit-looking, a big guy who looks like he works out quite a lot, even if the muscle is covered in a thick layer of fat. "So, you were down on that floor, the telltales went off. What did you do?"
"I figured it was a server error. I went into the server room."
"Do you remember the exact time?" You interrupt him again, again trying to draw him to want to speak more.
"No. Sometime after eight-fifteen when I saw the error. I went into the server room. I saw the runner, and I turned and ran back out and called the guards. She must have seen me because she ambushed the guards when they came in and killed them both. I ran and hid in an office while the rest of the guards kept her pinned down."
"Why did you stay on that floor, not head to the emergency shelter? That's protocol isn't it?"
"I--" He hesitates. "I felt like a coward. I wanted to see what I could do to help the guards. I hid in the office and under a desk. That's when I saw the other runner team come up and--" he pauses, wiping his eyes. "They killed everyone, they took the other runner and they left."
"And they didn't see you?"
"No."
"I'm sure you'll get a commendation for your bravery in this matter." You say it in as bland and friendly a tone as you can. Being both bland and friendly is actually difficult. You see a discrepancy here and decide to chase it up. "There's one thing I'd like to know, just for record-keeping, you know how it is."
"Yes."
"There's a gap of six minutes here, between you detecting the security glitch in the server, and the time of death of the guards. You said she ambushed them when they came into the room right?"
"That's right."
"How long would you say it took the guards to arrive?"
"I mean, several minutes."
"So, what did you do in that time? It must have been nerve-racking, knowing that the runner was in the server room."
"I wasn't worried. I had the door locked. We have good security inside the building."
"But didn't the runner have at least some control over the building? I notice you weren't able to put the building into lockdown. The entry gate was still raised."
He stops, licks his lips, and raises his coffee to take a drink. "I guess I just-- I'm not sure where the time went. It's hard you know, when you have adrenalin rushing through you. Time moves differently."
