SGD - Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Semi-AU Fic

I want to work this in somehow, firing standing of course. It would be kind of useless in reality, but Rule of Cool. IIRC the recoil was 11kg continuous, although the weight was bearable at ~70 pounds.

Basically what my writing environment looks like, except a bit misleading because OpenOffice.org is almost always maximized. You can see all the stuff I have open, though. Just thought you'd be curious- and there is a small hint about Season 2 mixed in.

Is anyone here good at the technical stuff? I'm hoping to make this season more technical and sciency, as opposed to glossing over stuff.

Even basic stuff such as weapon yields and ship mass would be nice to have. I'm not going as far as explaining how a hyperdrive works, if that's what you mean.

Also:

Coming soon to a fanfic site near you.

EDIT: Season Two trailer! We're rolling smoothly toward a release, probably mid-September depending on RL factors and betaing.

Epic tralier; much imrpoved over the season 1 tralier.

So we know that a gigaton nuke does nothing to a Hatak's shields. Can we assume that the low end energy capacity for a Hatak shield is 10 gigatons, then, since a 10% hit would probably be felt?

Based on that, we know that an Ori's main weapon destroyes both shield and ship in one hit and retains about 10% or its original mass. Therefore, Ori weapon= 11 gigatons.

Deadeleus shield could take two of these , so 22 gigaton shield (note that the x304s were probably under heavy bombardement from ori lesser weapons as well)

Asgard plasma beams could take down an Ori mothership's shields in 7 shots. I cannot imagine an Ori mothership's shields being weaker then double the Deadeleus's, so I will use that.

Therefore, Ori mothership=44 gigatons and Asgard beams = 6 gigatons (since Asgard ion cannons could blow apart a hatak in one shot and we know 4 shots from that does nothing to Ori shielding, the beams and the Ori's shields are probably much stronger).

Afterthought: Tollan and Asgard ion cannons (outdated) would take down a Hatak in a one shot, giving them 10+ gigatons. Anubis's hataks could withstand multiple shots, so shield power went up by a fair factor.

Middle end estimation

Cronus's unupgraded Hatak sat in the cornea of a blue star for 10 hours, 50 minutes without shield. Using "An Ancients (spacebattles forumgoer)" calcs, it withstood at minimum 680 gigatons of power.

The hull (which unlike the shield does not have energy dissipation) took then 1/12 of that, or 56 gigatons

In this video, near the end, you can see that the Hatak's shields lasted at least 5x longer then the hull against the Ori lesser weapons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmiLchJrv9Y

Therefore, I conclude that the hatak's shields are 280 gigatons in this case.

Updated values as follows

Ori main beam: 300 gigatons

Deadeleus shield: 600 gigatons

Ori shields: 1200 gigatons

Asgard beams: 171 gigatons (since Asgard ion cannons could blow apart a hatak in one shot, the beams and the Ori's shields are probably much stronger)

Afterthought: Tollan and Asgard ion cannons (outdated) would take down a Hatak in one shot, giving them 280+ gigatons. Anubis's hataks could withstand multiple shots, so shield power went up by a fair factor.

High end estimation

Cronus's unupgraded Hatak sat in the cornea of a blue star for 10 hours, 50 minutes without shield. Using "An Ancients" calcs, it withstood at maximum 10 terratons of power.

Shield withstood 11/12 of that, so 9 terratons (well, 9.1 something, but whatever)

Updated values as follows

Ori main beam: 9 terratons (too lazy to calculate 10% value)

Deadeleus shield: 18 terratons

Wraith cannon: 360 gigatons

Ori shields: 36 terratons

Asgard beams: 5 terratons (since Asgard ion cannons could blow apart a hatak in one shot, the beams and the Ori's shields are probably much stronger)

Afterthought: Tollan and Asgard ion cannons (outdated) would take down a Hatak in one shot, giving them 9+ terratons. Anubis's hataks could withstand multiple shots, so shield power went up by a fair factor.

Final afterthought: 3 anubis hataks were able to force the Oddessy w/ asgard upgrades to flee.

I've already seen those numbers, but thanks anyway. Time for another teaser:

Vala found herself being dragged away again, back into her makeshift cell. Athena followed them, leaving only the four guards with Daniel. She shut the door behind them, then nodded to the guards. They pushed Vala down into the chair, and one of them tied her back to it.

"You are part of an undercover operation to expose and destroy the Trust," Athena stated.

"No," Vala replied, puzzled more by her tone than anything.

"Doctor Jackson was sent here on a poorly-planned operation by the CIA to accomplish much the same goals. Your escape from Guantanamo Bay was allowed by the United States government as part of the operation."

"Now what makes you think that?"

"I have my sources. And of course there is the subcutaneous transmitter we removed from your body, which was a model designed and built by NSA techs."

"So that's why that hurt," Vala muttered. "Really, though, I'm not part of any intelligence operation. I can't speak for Daniel, of course."

"One month prior to our meeting, a CIA operative spoke with you."

"As a matter of fact, that does ring a bell. However, I specifically refused that offer, as tempting as it was."

A man shouted from the larger area outside. "Ma'am, Doctor Jackson says he has it."

"Already?" she asked, and he nodded. "Take her. Vala, I'll buy your story for the time being, but if you're lying, I will kill you."

Please, feel free to speculate all you want.

Part three is finished, around 15000 words for all three so far. Possibly two or three more pieces of the puzzle, then they will be shipped off for beta'ing and released.

Fantastic trailer dude. Really epic. Love the editing, with the music.

Looking forward to see what you plan to do.

Shoddy source material, mediocre editing, wrong music, the list goes on. The biggest problems, I think, were the bad audio editing (caused by reducing music volume after finely tuning everything) and lack of logical flow. It barely represented the first episode, let alone the season as a whole. The titles look like they were done in Windows Movie Maker, which isn't far off. Still, watching it again, it's not *that* bad. I think it's also the first trailer I made that had purposeful voice in it (Halogate had one line, but it was just because I was too lazy to remove it and it had nothing to do with anything).

And it's still a lot better than the travesty that was the original SGD trailer

The main reason there isn't any ground action is because I don't know of any suitable footage. Most of the stuff that is close in content is from video games and shows it.

EDIT: In-universe reason that O'Neill is still commander of the SGC? Hammond has taken his canon position, realizing that with everything going on it's too early to retire.

There is one scene where a character in Aegis III armour needs to be taken down in a public-ish place, on Earth, at extreme close range, no shields. What do you guys think would be the least ridiculous way to accomplish this without causing problems later?

Wisky-08 said:
How much does the Aegis armor Mark-1, II, and III costs again?
Too much. This may or may not be a plot point. I'm not sure what kind of number this would be (I'm thinking >1M) but it is MUCH more expensive than say, an Interceptor vest.
Incognito said:
It maybe presumptuous of me since I never had to do anything like put together a trailer, but couldn't you splice together some shots of futuristic armored soldiers (from si-fi B-movies) shooting at something of screen then cut to shots of Ori soldiers taking fire? And than reverse the situation (Ori shooting, armored soldiers taking fire) to complete the ground combat sequence?
I wouldn't even have to go that far, the problem is that I don't know of any sci-fi B movies like that. If I had the source, it would be no problem. The only thing I know of that's remotely similar is the Halo Landfall live-action video. Apparently they actually built a functioning Warthog for that.

  • Fire from a large-caliber metal-storm pistol (no need for something as large as 50 cal. if you fire several slightly smaller bullets into the same spot) to a vulnerable point on the armour perhaps? That may work since you had Genii take out an Aegis soldier by putting an elephant gun round through his visor.

  • Maybe some sort of mine/explosive? A sticky bomb?

  • How about those ultra-sharp anti-Kull knives? Will they work on a chink in the armour?

  • Can anything shut down the suit's electronics?
Oops, I forgot to mention that the person needs to be taken down alive. Injured is fine, dead is not. Most of those ideas are good, though. The Metal Storm pistol would do a good job of bringing down shields; penetrating armour is dependent on the ammunition. A Sufficiently Large Explosion will kill anything, it's just a matter of how much. In this case a shaped charge would probably be better. Shutting down the suit's electronics would be possible, but insanely difficult. I'm not going down the cliched "everything can be hacked in five seconds" route. These are military-grade suits, with hardened, redundant electronics.

Interesting you should mention the anti-Kull knife. The best idea I can come up with is a very fine trinium alloy needle injecting something. I'm not sure if you'd be able to get enough in before the wearer reacts, though- it would have to be pretty potent.

Rendered useless in the same episode due to mental retardation on my part. I'm thinking I'll go with the super sharp needle.

Disabling the power source would be an interesting technique, but since it's under the armour layers, it would probably kill them in the process.

I will try to bring Chaya in.

I've hit writer's block again. The season begins with an arc on Earth, and I want to give a broader perspective showing how things are going on Earth and elsewhere, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Thanks for the link. I might read it.

Writer's block has been broken! I decided to extend the President's speech at the beginning. Expect wonderful things (or at least less crappy things) soon.

EDIT: A cut tidbit to raise curiosity levels a bit.

Before Vala could respond, she shoved a bundle of cloth on her. "You'll stand out like a sore thumb in that bright orange prison jumpsuit."

"How far?"

"A few hours to the airport, then several more to Toronto. Relax, it'll go just fine."

I could use some help with names and positions.

Colonel Chekov - Operations/2IC (as per popular request)
Alice Sanders - Intelligence (Enemies Domestic)
Samesh Bharata - Logistics (one comment on FF.net mentioned India)
Bill Lee - Science and Engineering (you know him)
Amanda Somers - Public Relations (as per a suggestion here)
????? - commander Offworld Combat Division

Am I missing any positions? Do the names suck?

Nope, still a Colonel. May be promoted by the end of the season.

Suggestions for the Offworld Combat Division commander would be welcome. Probably a Colonel in rank, non-American preferable. Perhaps a Brit?

I've got to Part 3, somewhat revised. Two more chapters, then they will be reviewed, released to betas, then publicly released.

For those of you who enjoy lengthly technical descriptions, here is one that was cut from Season One. I cut it because it felt out of place, didn't make a lot of sense to most people, and I think is horribly technically inaccurate. Still, nerdgasm if you wish.

Any universal Turing machine can emulate any other universal Turing machine, given enough memory. In practical terms, this meant that any computer system could be simulated by another, given enough resources. Curiously, a lot of the technology used to simulate goa'uld and other alien computer systems had come from hackers attempting to run alternative operating systems and play console games on their personal computers.

As x86 is a standard on Earth, the goa'uld (and by extension the Tok'ra) run on a standard computer architecture. Codenamed SNAKE-three, it was a convoluted 128-bit CISC architecture made somewhat more bearable by advanced compilers. SNAKE-three was actually a bastardization of an earlier design, and a crude one at that. Nevertheless, SNAKE-three was the standard and it had to be made to work. Once the initial reverse-engineering was completed, emulating it took a lot of computing power but was not overly difficult. Legions of coders had worked on it, not knowing what they were writing or why they were writing it.

A small program was loaded from the Tok'ra receiving device through a complex interface and loaded into the generous amount of RAM in the crystal based computer. From there, emulation software took over, translating the SNAKE-three instructions into x86-64 ones that the 8GHz multicore crystal-based computer could understand. Other portions of the software emulated peripheral devices, including the galaxy display. On an earlier system, it might be rendered to a flat plane. In this case, however, it was drawn to a holographic display using a freshly-minted GPU. Display emulation was largely HLE, with the emulation focused on emulating the gross function and not every minor detail. A proprietary derivative of OpenGL was used for the task.

Of course, none of that passed through the mind of Jacob, Selmak or especially O'Neill.

I'll get some Canadian in there somewhere, as I am Canadian. But as Incognito suggested, someone outside the Anglosphere would be a good idea. Israel and Russia are already in it big time. China is a possibility, though the dominant US, British and Russian powers of the AESF probably wouldn't like that. So I'm thinking European, perhaps French or German. I like Germany, and I don't think I have ANY Germans at all.

I was going to start the next part, but got distracted modding DOOM. Hmm, maybe I should make Stargate Doom. Which also abbreviates to SGD, funny enough.

German it is then. Taking name suggestions.

On a side note, am I the only SG fanfic writer that can make a decent trailer? I watched a bunch of them and they all fucking sucked. Same issues, too. Poor video sources, with clearly visible logos and what I call Aspect Ratio Fail (my early vids had this). Awful titles done in Arial, some of them not centered and with glaring spelling mistakes. And of course, the failure to realize that audio editing is half the fight. Muting the audio track and dubbing music does not cut it. Especially when characters are shown talking.

I rewatched my own trailer, which while not perfect is about ten steps up from the usual ones, to refresh myself after that.

General Landry would be the obvious choice, but he's American. We already have General O'Neill in charge of the SGC and General Hammond in overall command. Three Americans in high positions just doesn't work.

Chekov will almost certainly not get the Korolev, and the Kirov has been dropped entirely. For those who are curious, the Kirov *was* a heavy missile cruise, designed to strike from light-minute ranges with hyperspace capable missiles. Much better than lining up at point blank.

Intelligence - Liaising with Earth intelligence and also running off-world intelligence operations. May think of a better person for this.

Logistics - Supplies, distribution, that sort of thing.

AESF does not have a separate Navy, the fleet would be under General Hammond and the Stargate Committee.

Incognito: I am reconsidering the Intelligence position. I was never really sure who to put in this rule. I'm actually thinking someone totally new now, perhaps British. Don't look at me like that, British spies are awesome.

Vianca: I've moved on past that scene, and I've intentionally left it a bit vague. You'll see what I mean when it's released.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, SGD S2's launch has been pushed back at least to the end of the month. Real sorry about this, but I have other things going on.

A small tidbit for you guys. I would have more, but I had to fix GRUB instead of writing. A Linux USB drive sure is handy...

It was a dark, stormy night, which suited the SAS operators just fine, but didn't do anything to help the pilot. He slowed the helicopter, never quite stopping it and hovering, as the lines were tossed over and the men began to fast-rope down them toward the warehouse roof below.

The helicopter was continuing its slow travel when an energy bolt erupted from a hidden projector on the edge of the roof. With no time for the pilot to react, it ripped into the Merlin dead on, melting first through the skin, then decimating the engines and gearbox above. In seconds, the remains of what had once been a helicopter were hurtling toward the rooftop, narrowly missing and plunging down onto the ground below. Two of the men on the lines managed to make it down safely, one jumped and broke his leg, and one was killed by shrapnel.

Of the original assault force of two dozen men, sixteen were still in fighting shape. That number was cut down in seconds as gunfire ripped into their ranks from the other side of the massive roof. They scrambled for whatever cover they could find, be it roof access, air conditioners, or vent pipes.

EDIT: Does anyone know if Colonel Chekov has a first name in canon? I was going to give him one (he strikes me as a Gennady or Mikhail) but I don't want to do so if he already has one.

Alright, what do you think? Mikhail, Gennedy, or something else?

SGD 2x01 is creeping closer to 6000 words, and I think it will exceed it. 2x04 as well. I am about two-thirds to three-quarters of the way done that one. Figure this will be ready for betaing by the end of the month. Yes, more delays. Sorry, I'm easily distracted. I have a halloween project involving Arduinos among other things as well as a Doom mod going at the same time. Plus school and a bunch of other crap.

Snippet:

"This is madness!" Gerak objected. "First you insult us with your presence, then you demand we bend to your will and force things we do not need on us?"

"The cold hard fact is that we do need each other," Woolsey replied calmly, adjusting his glasses. "Now, more than ever, we are both vulnerable. The goa'uld empire is gone, which has lulled many into a false sense of security. A very false sense. Various mercenary groups have emerged, minor goa'uld are struggling for power, and Yu's empire is growing. The Free Jaffa Nation is spread out and has few defences. It is vulnerable, but Earth is more so. We are a known target, and our forces are still small.

"There is also the matter of your logistics. If no aid is received and radical changes are not made, your food shortage will become critical by the end of this month. If even one tretonin production facility is taken out of commission, you will not have enough. Your fleet is degraded and there is noone and nothing to repair it with. Your armies are scattered, untrained, and under-equipped. Your economy simply does not exist."

"What would you have us do?" Ka'lel asked quietly.

"Enter an alliance with us. Supplies can be sent immediately, which will stave off the food crisis. Technicians and engineers can be sent to improve your infrastructure. We can assist your military in rebuilding its forces. In the long term, trade will stimulate your economy and our own. It would be a new era of prosperity for both our civilizations. It hinges on one decision.

"Think about it carefully."

Link? Or are you just going to give me a ton of spoilers?

On a side note, looks like the season premiere is going to be six parts long, rather than the targeted five. There's just too much to cram in. However, the chapters are shorter, so it would be like reading three episodes of late-S1, in smaller chunks.

EDIT: Sniped.
