Seeking Alice: A Wonderland Quest

Chess Status
You get off the train and walk forward. A fancy stone statue straightened and cleared his throat as you approached. "Papers."

"Papers?"

"Yes. Papers." The statue stared at you steadfastly.

"I don't have any."

The statue continued to stare, before letting out a great heaving sigh and pulling out more papers. "Right then. What are you? White? Red? Pawn?" He looked you over and sniffed. "Not a very good one, but you would do."

"What? Hold on, what do you mean?"

"I mean what will you be here? A pawn is surely the highest rank someone like you qualifies for, but you can always put in a bid to be another piece. A bishop, perhaps."

Was he asking you to be a chess piece?

[ ]Explain in small words that you are a human, thank you
[ ]Agree to be a pawn, it seems the simplest
[ ]Try for being a bishop like the statue suggested
[ ]Suggest being a knight, you've always liked horses
[ ]Claim being a rook, a solid piece
[ ]Write-in

Declaration
"A knight?" You've always liked horses. You're not sure what agreeing to be a chess piece might do, but getting a horse doesn't sound so bad.

"A knight?" The official leaned back in surprise. "You would claim yourself a knight? One of the pieces that requires the most training? The one most relied upon in the games? The ones best at dodging the Corruption?"

Whoa whoa, that was a lot more responsibility than you had been expecting!

[ ]Double down on it
-[ ]You are a white piece
-[ ]You are a red piece
[ ]Change your mind, pawn is fine
-[ ]You are a white piece
-[ ]You are a red piece
[ ]Decide to leave after all

Knight Chess
"I can be a knight," you said stubbornly.

"Fine," the statue sighed. "And your alliance?"

You looked around uncertainly. "What's the difference?"

"White goes backwards, Red goes forward," the statue explained.

"Red then." The statue nodded and finished filling out the paperwork before passing it over. You blinked. "Hang on, my name isn't Alice."

The statue just ignored you, moving on to the next person disembarking into Chess Crossing. You sighed and stepped forward-only to find you had suddenly leaped across the flooring to another spot. You stepped again, experiencing the same odd disorienting effect. "What is this?"

"Knights are tricky," a nearby bishop said. They straightened their very ornate headpiece. "Takes a lot of training to move unpredictably."

And you had just signed up for that. Lovely. Well, you weren't giving up here. You gathered yourself together the best that you could and headed up and out. It was a bit odd exiting into a checkered plaza. It was even odder to look around and realize that physics apparently did not matter here. There were people walking on walls, on partial ceilings. Doors that were sideways and arches into places that didn't quite make sense. People were just wandering all over in here, with no sense for how the world was meant to work.

White Knight
You started making your way rather dizzily across the plaza. You might have gone backwards a couple times, but it was hard to tell with how strangely things were laid out and how you moved so oddly. Somehow you managed to make your way down out of the plaza to a street. Down there you watched as the strange people populating this place drew away from a small girl skipping down the streets with a soft golden glow to her. She smiled brightly at you, her gaze empty.

[ ]Avoid her
[ ]Greet her

It got easier to move the further out you got from the plaza. The blocks began to be more spaced out, allowing you to move more normally. At last you reached a stable stocked with horses, and found a knight dressed in white fussing gently over his horse.

"Excuse me," you greeted.

"It's not Wednesday yet," the knight replied.

"What?"

"Wednesday." The knight looked over at you. "You get your horse Wednesday. You ride it tomorrow. You bounce around today until you're sick. It's not Wednesday, so you're at the wrong place. You need to be bouncing."

"Wait, what?"

The knight let out a short scream and grimaced. "Right, off to battle for me!" He mounted his horse and headed off, ignoring the sudden wound that had appeared on him.

[ ]Try to follow him
[ ]Look for a different knight
[ ]Look at the horses. You aren't going to wait until Wednesday just because someone weird says to
