I blinked, looking at the world through a mismatched pair of eyes.
"The procedure was a success, Naori, Naka. Miho-chan is waking up now." Uchiha Hibiki stated softly. "
"That's good to hear, Hibik." Mama replied, sighing.
"So, we all have the so-called Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan now?" I asked softly, receiving a nod from mama and papa. "That was… easier than I expected it to be…" I continued, getting up off the operating table.
"That would be because the method has been perfected over the course of the Uchiha Clan's existence, Miho-chan." Hibiki said dryly, "The procedure is considered complex, but trivial for a medic of even moderate skill to perform, so long as they have the knowledge."
"Huh," I muttered, "That makes sense, I suppose."
"Want to see your new Mangekyo designs, Miho-chan?" Papa asked, grinning, likely in an effort to change the subject. "I've got a mirror right here for you."
"Sure!" I chirped, taking the hand mirror, then activating the doujutsu. It was… mesmerizing, seeing my parent's mangekyo designs merged with mine. My left eye, containing my mother's left eye, was a mixture of her three petals and my own, which, to my annoyance, had resembled Madara's. My right eye, a mixture of my father's shuriken design and my own, merged seamlessly like my left eye to form what looked simply like my father's, but with my own orbiting the pupil in a smaller form.
"Now, you'll always have a piece of us with you when we aren't physically present, Miho-chan." Papa whispered softly, his own Mangekyo spinning lazily as a different form of my right eye spun in his right. "No matter what happens, we love you."
I nodded, fully getting up off the bed to hug my parents, though I still only came up to their waist. "Love you too, papa, mama."
We stayed like that for a while, simply reveling in each other's warmth, until Uchiha Hibiki coughed. "While I am touched that you love each other so much, I do need to see my next patient."
Blushing, mama ushered us out of the clinic, waving goodbye to our kin as we did so. As we walked around the Uchiha compound, I frowned as I noticed, not for the first time, the lack of non-Uchiha around. Our gates were open. We allowed others in the compound since Madara had been… dethroned. Why didn't anyone want to come and give us business?
"It is rather sad, isn't it?" Mama muttered sadly, "We open our doors to the village, yet almost none of them take the invitation. The paranoia is… almost unreal."
I nodded, my eyes narrowed. "It is, mama. It shouldn't be like this…"
Papa sighed, before nodding. "It shouldn't but we cannot change this. All we can do is offer the village our trust, and continue to do so." All of us were silent as we plodded towards our residence, a sombre silence hanging over us all. Evidently, by the time we reached our house, mama was through with the silence.
"Are you looking forward to starting the Academy Miho-chan?" She asked, smiling at me.
I nodded. "Yeah. Even if I have memories from another time and place, I've noticed that I'm still acting much like a child. It'll be good to socialize with people that aren't kin." my reply had my parents patting my head, mussing my hair while they were at it, something that drew a light growl from me. I spent a lot of time putting my hair up in the style I chose, damnit! It wasn't easy imitating Chloe/Kuro's hairstyle, thanks.
"Ara, you're rather adorable when you growl Miho-chan." Mama teased.
"She is, isn't she?" Papa added, smirking.
"I just can't win with you two." I grumbled, though there was no heat in it. It was nice, after all, the teasing we did to each other.
"Just remember that Satsuki-chan is waiting for you at Uchiha Training Ground One, Miho-chan." Mama cautioned, "Wouldn't want to keep-"
I gasped, "Shit! Forgot. Talk to you later mama, papa, I'm going to go get dressed for training!"
"She seriously forgot?" I heard papa 'whisper', "Didn't we tell her all but ten minutes ago?"
"To be fair, she was waking up. It's not unlikely that she wasn't entirely paying attention." Mama chimed in, likely smiling.
"I can hear you, you know that, right?!" I yelled over my shoulder, before disappearing into my room to change. Off went my casual clothing, and on went my training uniform, consisting of something similar to Sasuke's outfit during the Chunin Exams, just fitted for my much smaller body. It was kinda disturbing how much the Uchiha clan liked black, blue, and other dark colors… And how I had been infected by that like. I resolved to change my outfit to something more fitting to my old self, especially once I started the academy. I'd have to go shopping…
Finally satisfied with my appearance, I made my way down the hallway of our rather traditional house, stopping briefly at the kitchen to grab the bento that I had prepared this morning. Thankfully, stasis seals were a fantastic thing, so it wasn't going cold anytime soon, since I had given the seal enough chakra to last for the whole day.
Finally, I made my way towards the entrance hall of our house, breaking out into a full run as I looked at the clock. I was going to be late.
"Ittekimasu!" I yelled as I blitzed out of the door, "I'll be back for dinner!"
"Don't die!" Papa yelled through the door cheerfully. "Enjoy your training Miho!"
"I'll have dinner ready at six, Miho!" Mama called as well, likely smirking.
Acknowledging my mother's words with a "Hai!" I made my way towards the internal training grounds of the Uchiha Clan Compound, using chakra enhanced speed to get there faster than I normally could on my own. Satsuki was waiting for me, and I had no desire to make her wait.
Moments later, I broke into the clearing, smiling as I saw my cousin practicing taijutsu katas in the center of the field.
"Satsuki-chan! Sorry I'm late. The appointment ran longer than we thought it would!" I called out, running towards my best friend.
"Miho-chan!" Satsuki chirped, running over to me. "It's okay! I got to practice more of my katas this way!"
"That's good!" I replied, smiling. "How are you doing with Taka-no-Mai?" I asked as I ran through my warmup stretches.
"Good! Mama's moving me on to the intermediate stances and kata! What about you Miho-chan?"
Huh, so Satsuki was ahead of me in Taijutsu. Not unexpected. "I'm still finishing out the beginner stances, Satsuki-chan." I replied, "Though mama did include some of the more advanced movements into my kata."
Satsuki nodded seriously. "Wanna spar?" She asked, "I wanna see how good I am against a peer."
"Sure!" I answered, nodding my head. "Just let me finish warming up, okay?"
We sat in companionable silence as Satsuki continued running through her kata, and I continued warming up. After a few minutes of warming up, I moved over to where my cousin was practicing her taijutsu and poked her on the shoulder. "Hey Satsuki, I'm ready when you are!"
The girl whirled around, smiling at me. "Okay!" she chirped, producing a coin. "We'll start when this coin hits the ground!" She continued, flipping the coin. My perception of time slowed, my eyes tracking the coin as it arced upward, slowly spinning, then raced downwards, striking the ground.
Immediately, my cousin rocketed towards me, telegraphing a jab. My sharingan activated, I slipped underneath it, the series of blows following it being evaded in a similar manner. I saw my cousin frown, only for it to invert, as she leapt up and brought down a kick. Grunting as I blocked the blow, my arms crossed and reinforced with chakra, I grabbed her foot, and threw her away. Without waiting for her to land, I rushed towards the spot she would likely land, attempting to catch her before she recovered. I failed, and we exchanged a series of blows, most of them blocked by the other's arms or missing entirely.
For a while, we kept up the dance, weaving in and out of the fight, until finally, my cousin slipped up. My sharingan revealed an opening, and I ruthlessly exploited it, delivering a rather harsh kick to Satsuki's stomach that knocked the air out of her, and sent her tumbling to the ground. Wincing, both in sympathy and in concern, I walked over to her.
"You okay, Satsuki?" I called as I made my way over.
"Mhm," she grunted, "I can't wait for my sharingan to awaken. It's not a fair fight unless both of us have it, after all."
Offering her my hand, I replied, "I can forgo using it if you'd like?"
"No, please don't." Satsuki grumbled, taking my hand and pulling herself up, "Life isn't fair, and I should get used to that."
"True enough, Satsuki," I replied, "Though it was a good fight regardless." A few moments of silence passed between us, before I asked a question that had been hovering on my mind, "Say, do you feel like eating lunch now? We can move to jutsu practice afterwards?"
Smiling, my cousin nodded. "Sure! Under the tree?" She answered, pointing towards the tree in question.
"Under the tree." I replied, returning her smile as I made my way over to the tree with my bento. All in all, it had been a good day thus far.
"-Interfere in our affairs?" A man yelled, Naruko's sensitive hearing picking up on the argument ongoing within the Kazekage's tower.
"Improperly sealing your jinchuuriki? Seriously, Kazekage-dono-" Jiraiya-san's voice called out, muffled only slightly by the walls of the Kazekage's office. Naruko sighed, staring at the masked face of her watcher, the young ANBU staring right back at her.
"They're annoying, aren't they?" Weasel asked, the smile in his voice palpable. "Would you like to go elsewhere while we wait, Naruko?"
The young Uzumaki shook her head. "I wanna stay Weasel. I wanna hear what Jiraiya-san and jii-chan have to say."
The ANBU chuckled, "Of course, Naruko." They lapsed into comfortable silence as the "adults" screamed like little children at each other, eventually settling down to where Naruko couldn't hear them anymore. Eventually, Weasel interrupted the silence,
"Say, Naruko, when we get back to Konoha, how would you like to meet with some of the other ANBU? I know some of them have been interested in meeting you."
Naruko shuddered, memories of that horrible night flooding back. "No. I-"
Weasel held up his hand, "It's fine Naruko, I know what happened." Sighing, the raven haired boy seemed to think for a moment before resolving himself. "Tell you what, I'll ask Hokage-sama if I can meet you when I'm not on duty. I can take you to meet my kin. My imouto would love you."
"Okay Weasel." Naruko replied softly, playing with her hair, "I trust you and Dog."
Weasel's heart went out to the poor girl's, his fists clenching as he thought of the scum that had attempted to take her life. Aware that Naruko could take his actions the wrong way, he relaxed immediately, sending a reassuring smile her way.
Of course, this was all interrupted when the door to the Kazekage's office burst open, a fuming Jiraiya dragging the unconscious redheaded boy with him. "Weasel, keep an eye on Naruko. I need to go fix this brat's seal."
Weasel bowed. "As you wish, Jiraiya-senpai." He answered, "Does the Hokage-"
"Kazekage-sama requests Uzumaki-san's presence, ANBU-san." A Suna shinobi interjected, "Your Hokage has approved, so if you could make your way into the office, it would be appreciated."
Weasel nodded, rising to his feet. "Come, Naruko. Let's go meet the Kazekage." He said, taking hold of the girl's hand. The little girl nodded, rising to her feet and following the ANBU agent into the office.
"Hello, Naruko-chan." Hiruzen sighed, "Rasa-dono wishes to repay Konoha for services rendered, and it was decided that providing Konoha with puppet style ninjutsu would suffice as a payment." Pausing, the Hokage took a look at his surrogate granddaughter, "Rasa-dono wishes to provide a future kunoichi of Konoha with a puppet, and it was decided that you would be provided with a puppet of your own."
The Kazekage coughed. "I can explain the rest, Hiruzen-dono." He stated, "We possess, within our vaults, a... gift, passed to Sunagakure-no-Sato by Uzugakure-no-Sato. I believe it is time to return it to an Uzumaki."
Hiruzen looked at Rasa sharply, only for the Fourth Kazekage to ignore it completely. Naruko cocked her head to the side, nodding a few moments later. Struggling to remember her rushed lessons on politeness, Naruko attempted to produce a coherent, yet, polite response.
"Thank you, Kazekage-sama." The Uzumaki stated, bowing. "I am honored by your gift."
A smile crossed the Kazekage's face briefly, only for it to immediately disappear, replaced by a poker face. "You are welcome, Uzumaki-san." He intoned, producing a scroll. "Sealed within here is a puppet, one modified extensively by an Uzumaki Sealmaster who gifted it to Sunagakure-no-Sato. Unfortunately, after his death, it ceased working, and is locked by biometric seals, specifically, tied to the Uzumaki bloodline."
Naruko's eyes widened, looking at her grandfather-figure with wide eyes. "Ji-Hokage-sama, why wasn't I told that I have a clan?" Naruko whispered, struggling to maintain her decorum.
Hiruzen shot a halfhearted glare at Rasa as Naruko continued to stare at him. Sighing, the Hokage seemed to age ten years as he replied, "Because the fact that an Uzumaki survives to this day is objectionable to three of the Great Five."
The jinchuuriki blinked, "Why is that, Hokage-sama?" She asked, holding the scroll within her arms tightly, hugging it to her chest. Naruko's vision blurred, though she made no effort to wipe the oncoming tears away. She was, after all, feeling rather betrayed, as her jiji had told her that he wouldn't tell her who her parents were.
Hiruzen groaned internally, both not wanting to deal with this while exhausted from a heated diplomatic meeting, and while in Sunagakure-no-Sato. He knew, however, that he owed Naruko answers, and the two sides of him warred briefly before he made his decision. "Because they were envious of the Uzumaki's skill in fuuinjutsu, and sought to deny Konoha an ally." he replied, "I will explain more when we get back to Konoha, I promise, but for now, please hold your questions."
Naruko frowned through her tears, but nodded. "Okay Hokage-sama, I'll wait."
Hiruzen internally sighed in relief, though his expression betrayed nothing externally. "Thank you for your patience, Naruko."
Rasa's cough brought both Konoha residents out of their own "bubble". "If I may continue, Hokage-dono?" He asked rhetorically, "As I said to Hokage-dono, if you had not been a blood Uzumaki, I would not have returned this to you. It was proving a wonderful study in sealing arts for Sunagakure's Sealing Corp. However, you can actually use Kuzunoha, and the masterpiece deserves to be used." Pausing, Rasa looked at the Uzumaki severely, "To ensure that you learn puppetry, there are instructional scrolls included within that sealing scroll. I expect that you will honor our alliance by doing your utmost to learn them."
Naruko blinked, then nodded slowly, "Hai, Kazekage-sama."
Rasa nodded, "Then we have nothing more to speak of. You are dismissed, Naruko-san."
