On a forgotten Island whose glory days were sundered from record, a young Sacred Artist seeks to better themselves, and learn more about what it means to be a Sacred Artist.

Based in the world of Cradle.
Character Creation - Tumbling Down
Pronouns
She/Her
A city the size of an island jutted out of the waters - hundreds of thousands of little dots all moving to their own rhythm, to their own pace, with their own ideals, their own dreams. Sky serpents dotted the skies alongside cloud constructs, keeping the harried air traffic controllers in constant panic as they tried to track the comings and goings of every person. As you grew higher, you realized that the island was not as haphazard as it seemed - the city was shaped, was intentional in every way. The gleaming white buildings of marble that seemed to clash with the neighbors of deep obsidian forming a shape, a pattern. A city the size of an island became a mon the size of an island, as you viewed it from far above. The marking for a great person, someone who no one dared to speak the name of.

-------

You climbed as high as possible, trying to reach the height of your dreams. But there was nothing around you like the city you'd dreamed of, the city everyone of your people had dreamed of at least once. The shared illusion that every Copper saw upon their first rest after advancing, the dream that marked them as a Copper to their families. You reached up towards the sky as you imagined the view from above - but it would be a long time before you could see such a thing. There were no winged serpents here, no friendly birds to ride upon. And the clouds were only used by those who had earned them.

The cool wind blew through your hair as you surveyed the islands beneath you from atop one of the largest spire-islands that made up your home, the ever present fog keeping the furthest from your sight. You were high enough for the splash of water to not reach you, but the smell of salty spray filled everything around you, as you opened your eyes to the aura around you. Wind, Cloud, and Water filled the air around you, dancing to their own routines, wind always rising to the top, while cloud bridged the gap between it and water. You'd seen this view many times before. But today you stood here taking in the first sight of your home with new vision.

You stood at the edge of the spire, leaning on the fence posts that kept you and the other young from falling over. Some of the older children would dive off from spots just like this, as they headed towards their days - but you were too young for that. Instead, as you headed back home you had to walk carefully along the earthen ramps carved deep into the stone, in which the homes and businesses were set. Everything you knew and loved was carved into one of the rock-faces here or on one of the other Spires - all of the friends you had, all of the rivals. To you, your home was beautiful - and to your copper sight it became only more wondrous, the gold-brown glow of the earth aura making even the boring stone suddenly special. The cloud bridges were so solid, so different from the free-aura of the fog!

One of the younger fishermen was bringing his haul up the ramp-way as you explored your senses - and neither of you saw each other. And when push came to shove, the fisherman valued keeping steady with his catch of a Glimmering Tuna - something that could feed his family for days. And you were small enough to go right under the guard rails meant to prevent accidents just like this, as you tumbled down off of a cliff face. And yet as you smacked against a rock and began to bleed, it wasn't fear that gripped your heart - it was wonder, as you looked at your arm bleeding not just blood but the blood red aura.

You should have been terrified, but that didn't go through your head, did it? You knew you would be fine, didn't you -

[ ] Plan: [First Name]
I went for mostly Hawaiian/Maori/Polynesian names for the siblings here, but don't feel compelled to.

- [ ] A. A stone hand reached out from the cliff face, and grabbed a hold of you. It was still rough stone and you could feel the bruises forming, as you looked up to you sister Merae Spire-Carver, whose Forged hand had caught you - and then began to raise you upwards towards her, back onto the path you were once on.
You are a member of the Spire-Cutter family, a family of Earth artists - your family are the premiere architects of the Salted Spires, and every home, every shop, every window has been made and maintained by a member of your family or their branches.
Your starting path is the Path of Carved Stone, a pure Earth path with a focus on solid techniques and construction.

- [ ] B. A boy shot down faster than you fell, wrapping you in his arms as he held you close. Your older brother Tama Soft-Storm held you gently, his Enforcement making him as gentle as a nursemaid. A puff of cloud coming from his feet as you both landed at the shoreline, neither of your crushed by the impact as the clouds protect you.
You are a member of the Soft-Storm family, a family of Cloud artists - your family and the related families create and maintain the cloud bridges that connect Spire to Spire, and allow your home to be called united.
Your starting path is the Path of Tamed Storms, a pure Cloud path with a focus on Soulsmithing.

- [ ] C. Your own blood suddenly pulled you towards the wall you had slammed into, blood pulled to blood as your sibling Nikora Heart-Mender cut open their palm while maintaining their Ruler technique, drawing your blood - and your body - towards them. Luckily for you, more of your blood stays inside of you than pours outside, though you feel them cycling to replace your lost blood as soon as you are in their arms.
You are a member of the Heart-Mender clan, a family of Blood artists - your family and its branches are the doctors, midwives, and healers for the Spires, keeping the people healthy.
Your starting path is the Path of Heart's Embrace, a pure Blood path with a focus on Healing.

- [ ] D. No one caught you - instead, the water flowed with you as you splashed down into it from a fall that should have killed you. A deep well forming as the water did not let you smash against it, but instead followed with you slowing your descent but leaving you ten feet underwater. The strong arms of your brother Roa Depth-Watcher fished you out of the water, as he swam you to shore, leaving you to cough up the water you swallowed.
You are a member of the Deep-Watcher family, the premiere family of fishermen for the islands - the man who sent you off the cliff was probably one of your cousins. Your family ensures people are well fed, and also act as the only 'refiners' of your people, utilizing the aquaculture from the shallows to deep within the seas.
Your starting path is the Path of Treasured Depths, a pure Water path with a focus on Refining.

- [ ] E. A blast of wind suddenly sent you flying back inwards towards the cliff-face, but before you can smash into it, you feel hands tug on the collar of your clothes - tossing you back upwards towards where you started. Your sister Lani Swift-Stride was far from gentle as she joined as swiftly as your shared name would imply.
You are a member of the Swift-Stride family, a family of Wind artists - your family are the premiere defenders of the Salted Spires, utilizing your swift speeds and ability to move with greater freedom to protect the Spires from threats from air and sea.
Your starting path is the Path of Swift Gales, a pure Air path with a focus on mobility.

You weren't afraid of the fall - but now you look up at your sibling, and you can already feel the tongue lashing that was incoming... they were clearly just concerned for their younger;

- [ ] 1. Brother (Male) (He/Him)
- [ ] 2. Sister (Female) (She/Her)
- [ ] 3. Sibling (Agender/non-Gendered) (They/Them)
- [ ] 4. Brother/Sister (Genderfluid) (All of the above, depending.)

Every protagonist has a talent; pick one:

- [ ] G. Sagacious - In matters of spirit, you take to change like a fish to water. You are better at cycling than most of your peers, and reached Copper younger than most. This does not aid in learning techniques.
- [ ] H. Full-Bodied - You have always been blessed with greater physical prowess than those your age - you are taller, stronger, and tougher than all of your peers. You can out wrestle the kids three years your senior.
- [ ] I. Gregarious - Your talent lies not with yourself, but with your interactions with others. You are often surrounded by friends on the Spire, and have few if any you would call enemies.
- [ ] J. Dedicated - You have watched your parents and siblings do their work your whole life, and have more advanced knowledge of your family's Specialty Focus, and a technique from their Path. You also find learning from your family specialty easier.
-
[ ] K. Treasured - You were born under a star that meant you matched a family prophecy from an oracle - and thanks to that, you are set to inherit a valuable family treasure that will be valuable through to your Gold stages.
- [ ] L. Lucky - You don't know how to explain it, but things just... go well for you. You just happen to find discarded scales on the floor here and there, you just happen to wake up right before your Mother yells at you for sleeping in, and other minor benefits.

Talents are both a starting bonus and going to generally be something you're better at keeping up with/a continued bonus.

---------

Hello friends. This is a dual purpose quest; I want to test a less granular system for if I do a season 2 of Xin Wu in the future, and I also just happen to be re-reading Cradle. Please, make a plan, and vote.

To plan vote, simply go

[ ] Plan Kaia

- B.
- 4
- H

This, for instance, would make Kaia Softstorm, a Genderfluid Cloud cultivator with higher physical talent.

Character List New
Persons of Interest

Softstorms

Direct Relations
Lōkahi Soft-Storm - You, a precocious youth, five years old and Copper already.

Tama Soft-Storm - Your older brother, 20 years old and already approaching the peak of Jade. Deep master of one his Enforcer technique, he has eschewed most other techniques in a single minded focus that let him be the top of his class physically for most of his life. Knows and accepts his limits, and isn't terribly ambitious. In a relationship with Lani Swift-Step, though you're not certain what that means.

Alon Soft-Storm - Your Father, overprotective as can be and a Lowgold. Cloud/Force path. A short but wide bear of a man, he experienced some sort of spiritual crippling when taking in his Remnant and advancing to Gold, causing him to be considered crippled by the rest of the Softstorms. Lacks the attention to detail and control for scripting, but makes it up with extremely good business sense, handling finances and tracking families by their positives and negatives. Goldsign: Produces fog from his pores. Especially when emotionally raised.

Ailani Soft-Storm - Your Mother, one of your clan's three Highgolds. Cloud/Force path. A temperamental genius in her own right, she has always only done what she wants in life, following her own path over guidance from others. Specialized in creating training tools and helping others to improve, she has a goal of revolutionizing the Sacred Arts and creating a tool that becomes as wide spread and utilized as the parasite ring. Lives by the mantra 'as long as your decision is informed', allowing her children much more freedom than her husband might like. Goldsign: Force-Hands sprouting from her shoulders.

Relatives
Fiva Soft-Storm - Your... aunt? (not actually your aunt). Cloud/Ice path. One of the teachers for the Mainline Family children, handling the Social Studies portion of your education - which includes both information on your families and their histories, as well as trying to encourage people to get along. Probably the most boring class you attend. A sweet girl who wants peace on the islands, and believes in helping everyone. Goldsign: Ice-Made spectacles on her face.

Manakai Soft-Storm - Your uncle, and heir apparent to the Soft-Storm family. Cloud/Destruction path. One of the other Highgolds, and owner of the largest workshops amongst the Soft-Storms. Specialized in creation of weapon constructs. Once killed a Truegold while just barely Highgold. Goldsign: ???

Adopted Members
Aisha Tender Soft-Storm - An adopted member of the Soft-Storms, Life/Cloud path. Iron, 13 years old. Joined the Soft-Storm family entirely due to feeling betrayed by Semis Heart-Mender after he refused to adopt her. Joined Manakai's workshop despite her path not being well suited to weapon work. Ambitious and wants to prove herself.

Swiftsteps

Kalia Swift-Step - Youngest daughter of the Swift-Step patriarch. Wind path. Approaching Iron at 9 years old. Extremely dedicated to her family's martial sword style, feels the pressure of being the Patriarch's daughter, and refuses to let herself lose. Has thus far never lost a duel, even when she first entered the copper spars. Extremely skilled for her age.

Lani Swift-Step - Middle child of the Swift-Step patriarch. Dating Tama. You don't know much about her except for those two facts, and that apparently she fights by flying, despite only being a Jade.

Depthwatchers

Tane Depth-Watcher - Copper your age. Intelligent, knows a lot about madra. Cocky and believes in his own superiority a bit too much. Third or fourth strongest of the kids your age. You won your first fight with him.

Vai Depth-Watcher - Lowgold, one of the mainline kids instructors. Water/Fire path. Lost her legs holding off a highgold spirit to protect a group of Irons, ending her career as a Fisher. Hates you for not trying hard enough in her classes. Looks down on Sacred Artists who rely too much on 'cheats'. Goldsign: Gills on her neck, allow breathing underwater.

Heartmenders

Semis Heartmender - Lowgold, one of your instructors. Blood/Poison path of the Poisoned Heart. Specialist in Madra studies, who seeks to find the secret of madra. Collects iron bodies, jade cycling techniques, and path manuals of all types in an attempt to improve his own understanding of madra. Goldsign: Mouths on the palm of his hands that can suck out poison from blood.

Kiri Heartmender - Copper, giant for her age, extremely tough and strong, with a rough personality. Likes to fight with Outcastes as she is not allowed to join the official legal duels. Has a bad attitude, feels like she was blessed with a talent she was cursed to be unable to use.

Spirecarvers

Lopati Spire-Carver - Lowgold, one of your instructors. Teaches general education - math, science, writing, the whole thing. Earth/Light path. Believes that all sacred artists can become better if they understand science and math to go with their techniques and training. Goldsign: Bald head that is eternally reflecting any light in the room.

Outcastes

None notable yet.

This is a very interesting quest idea and I can't wait to see where this goes.

Basically the idea around this is to have a Soulsmithing focused character who's whole thing is being an actual artist on top of being a Sacred Artist.

@KittyEmpress Can we approval vote? There's a lot of cool choices here.

I want the freedom of movement we could get with water, air, or cloud and want to craft but not as a soulsmith or refiner to avoid quest overlap. But I do want to craft and explore the islands more than setting up a roving adventurer. In a place that used to be full of wonder I think the construction worker, architect, archaeologist combo has a great shot at finding and making cool stuff so this plan is a lucky version of that.

[X] Plan: Temanao
-[X] A. Earth Path Architect, Solid Techs, Construction
-[X] 1. Brother
-[X] L. Lucky

Edit: Just because we're earth path doesn't mean we can't be good at swimming right?

I'm fine with approval voting.

And yes, Earth doesn't mean you're against swimming. You could even aim to integrate Water into your Path later. Everything's a mono Path for that reason.

Lucky is the closest thing to a Generalist trait you'll get. You won't ever Luck into a spiritual pill that makes you better than the Sagacious at cycling, or an Elixir that makes you stronger than the Full Bodied. But you will receive small bonuses to a wider range of things.

It's the 'I don't wanna commit to being good at one thing right away' option but it's also the 'I will never be the Best at one thing option'

Shouldn't there be another vote in this plan?

I'm also cool with lucky. My main interests are seeing us be a cloud boy. Clouds seem cool and it would be neat to have a male protagonist since many of my favorite stories here have female leads.

Anyone up for giving me a rundown of what Cradle is? Ill give it a read if it sounds really cool 😎
Cradle is Western "cultivation" series, that focus on characters who grow their power and "advance" (the in-universe term for gaining power).

I'll try to keep it brief, since I imagine OP will explain most of this in the story.
  • The world has distinct stages of power. Right now, the main character is Copper, which allows them to see the aura of the world. Everything in the world has aura -- Earth aura, Water aura, and even Blood aura. You can draw that aura into yourself and cycle it. You take the aura and turn it into madra, which is what actually is used in techniques.
  • There are many stages past Copper, but I'm sure they'll be explained by the story.
  • Your "Path" is a short-handed for the type of madra you use, as well as how you use it. All the path options we're given are single-element paths, so every technique uses one type of madra. If you're on an Earth path, you use Earth and nothing else. (There are hybrid paths that use, say, Earth and Water, but in that case you still use only those two.)
  • Soulsmiths (from the Cloud path) are essentially the "artificers" of Cradle. They use various materials to create powerful weapons and armor. If your character has a giant flaming sword, it was probably created by a soulsmith.
  • Refiners (from the Water path) create pills and elixers with various effects. Everything from healing pills to pills that let you advance faster can be created.

[x] Plan: Makana
-[x] A
-[x] 2
-[x] K

So this is a bit of an odd plan. My thought was mostly "I think it'd be neat". I didn't particularly want to repeat Healing, Soulsmithing, or Refining (Rock the Cradle and The Path Unending). I also didn't particularly want to repeat a fast, fluid fighting style.

I thought a strong solid Earth path would be interesting to explore. I think H (full bodied) would be an obvious choice here, but I went with K (treasured) because I thought a "young mistress" would be something new. I'm not expecting full-on spoiled brat here, but I think it'd be fun to play as the treasured daughter. Also we get some kind of shiny, so that'll be fun.

A quick google search says Makana means "gift" and means something precious.

Also just because the Cloud Path has Soulsmithing, the Blood Path has Healing, and the Water path has Refining doesn't mean you'll be forced to be that archetype. Unless you pick Dedicated (which no one has) it just means you have basic knowledge of that special, rarer skillset, as well as an easy inroad to learn it deeper.

[X] Plan: [Kalia]
- [x] 2. Sister (Female) (She/Her)
- [x] I. Gregarious - Your talent lies not with yourself, but with your interactions with others. You are often surrounded by friends on the Spire, and have few if any you would call enemies.

Kalia means "the flower wreath, the beloved" in Hawaiian.

My fav kitty quest i think has been the rpg quest where we had a social build. I'd like to lean into that more and have our mc be a leader. I also find it more interesting in a cultivation world to see how far kindness, generosity and relying on others can go.

Wind background cus i like the idea of being a full wind cultivator and to have the path open to us being a more military leader than pure social if the thread wants. Also nice to not be totally defenseless.

Girl cus i enjoy how kitty has written females.

Gregarious to lean into the social/leader role.

@ArcanaVitae your plan is missing a Talent. I'd like to come out in support of either Sagacious or Gregarious. DK just made a good case for Gregarious above Mr, and Sagacious is the obvious pick for being good at the main thing that makes one stand out in this setting.
