(RWBY) Firebird Fledgling

Chapter 19
The sewage treatment plants that ran under Argus were marvels of modern technology, with dust woven into the very brick and mortar, each tunnel was reinforced so that Grimm were discouraged from breaching it, just slightly hard enough that an aura user could vastly strengthen the stonework. Keep things stable, "common measures" Raven had said, as the two had picked their way from their hideout deep into the city, before ascending to street level and moving through the road.

It was a wonder Atlas had such a pull over a foreign country that they could impose martial law so quickly. A wonder that they truly didn't seem to have issues forcing their will over another's city.

The way the streets were was unsettling to Cinder, the quiet and calm felt unnatural, even as she and Raven snuck past patrols, Raven in the guise of her namesake bird, and Cinder with her aura cloak.

Things had begun to feel… strange, under that power, as if she'd almost lost touch with the world, it felt almost bleached when she dragged the aura up and over herself. Enough that it had messed with her comprehension and ability to discern details. It felt like some great shadow had fallen over Argus, and Cinder's control suffered for it.

Enough that Raven had noticed, based on the way her mother had gently touched down beside her and bodily dragged her free of the cloak.

The water bottle was in her mouth before she could even get a word in edgewise, and Raven's stern glare was forcing her to not protest, instead to drink.

The worst part was that Cinder couldn't even argue with her, and after she'd quenched her thirst, she found herself slumped against a wall, breathing heavily, and feeling like she'd run a marathon. It made no sense, though, she'd gotten sleep, eaten and drank plenty.

"Little kite, how long was it since you last truly let your aura recharge, at rest?"

At rest… as if she'd relaxed enough for it to recede beneath her skin fully, so that even her subconscious couldn't force it to activate anything more than the defensive shield, sleeping was dangerous, she knew Raven didn't relax, knew her mother didn't really force it out of her system ever.

And so, shifting her feet, she responded.

"Not… since you healed in the cabin."

That had been months ago now, the first night, where she'd been kept close to Raven for warmth, even as her mother watched the door, one hand on her busted weapon, more than willing to draw it and tear another in half should an intruder have breached the perimeter.

She'd never felt so warm before, never felt so seen, so heard, and so supported, that had been the first time she'd relaxed, and she'd… not relaxed since.

"Cinder… why?"

She looked up at Raven and, somewhat petulantly, a distant part of her remarked, replied.

"Because you don't relax like that…"

That part of her was louder now, and she was yelling at it to shut up, she wasn't petty. That was uncalled for.

Raven didn't smile, she flinched like Cinder had hit her, and began to tug the girl along, sticking to the shadows.

"Cinder… I'm not normal, I have reserves of power I can draw on for defense, reserves that let me allow my aura to rest even if it's not active… have you been able to pull your augmented senses in, at all?"

Cinder shook her head, the world blurring slightly around her as Raven tugged her close and scooped her up, moving to another shadow as the "thud, thud, thud" of patrol boots stepped along the street behind them.

"Let go, right now."

Her voice was flat, dangerous, and Cinder knew that, knew at some level that Raven wouldn't hurt her, but she couldn't help the mechanical flinch that instantly overcame her, and for just that one moment she was back in the hotel, back feeling those uncaring gazes burn across her back, feeling the Madame's electric collar, tearing at her and who she was.

"Cinder… let go of your aura, flare it, burn it out, whatever you need to do, release it."

Her mother's demand repeated, and Cinder tried, tried to think, tried to find a way out of it, and then she couldn't, as she flinched away from Raven's grip, as the other woman's hands turned into steel and she pulled Cinder in close, fully swaddling her in the scent of her mother.

Raven smelled of gunmetal, of sesame oil, and of a promise of warmth. That promise and that scent were tempered by the faint odor of blood underneath, mixed with something that to Cinder's enhanced senses had trouble parsing… as if Raven was so very young, and so very old at the same time. She couldn't really figure it out, couldn't put her finger on what gave Raven that smell, or why her nose couldn't fix it or fill it in.

But her embrace was warm, and Cinder tried, really tried, the commands wouldn't help her, they never had, only reminding her of the worst parts of it.

She'd initially experimented with her aura, enhancing her senses passively, trickling just a bit of her reserves into every part of her senses, touch, taste, hearing, smell, and eyes, all of it was helpful. It showed her things people didn't want to show easily, made it obvious when that Nikos woman had been assessing her, even if she'd had to visibly exert her aura in that case.

It felt to Cinder so natural, so easy, that she'd never questioned why she should keep doing it, she'd never thought to stop, either. Raven had taught her to be alert at all times, and she'd kept her enhanced senses for that, it had let her surprise her mother on more than one occasion when she was ambushed in her sleep.

Had that been a bad idea? Raven's voice seemed to think so, but her mother's actions hadn't been easy to figure out, she trained Cinder ruthlessly, she'd told her to keep her guard up all the time.

"You told me to be on guard… right?"

Raven flinched again, like Cinder had struck her, hurt her, and then, she spoke.

"First… we're here. But second…"

She paused, surveying the compound before getting down on her knees and tugging Cinder in close.

"I am sorry, I am sorry I mislead you. You should not burn yourself out, shouldn't have to hurt yourself trying to match up to my expectations… they are…"

She looked almost pained saying it.

"Too high of you."

Then, she made it worse for Cinder's composure.

"You have come so far, in so little time, little kite. I know Summer would be proud of you, and I certainly am."

The pleased warmth that burst through Cinder at that comment set her entire self in a new light, and Raven smiled down at her, a genuine one, this time, pulling at both corners of her lips and tugging them up and into the air.

Cinder stood then, and she sucked in a breath, cutting her aura off, and for once, letting it form the defensive field around her body, only. Nothing more than that.

It was hard to put the sensation into words, as if she'd lost half or more of her senses in a sudden burst, it felt wrong, and strange, but she didn't disobey or change from what Raven had ordered. Instead shouldering half of the explosives as the two moved towards the plant.

The tunnels that they'd use to get in weren't ideal anymore, with Argus tending towards a powder keg, and dozens of people set upon the streets, it was, ironically enough the safest place to infiltrate the waste treatment plant.

A flick of Omen severed the chains around the fence, cutting a hole just wide enough for Cinder to sweep in as Raven leapt up and over the fence entirely. As she landed on the other side, she calmly and evenly proceeded to the entrance, and Cinder ducked around the edge of the building, heading for the tanks that contained a surplus of the city's sewage when it wasn't being treated.

At the moment, the tanks weren't stuffed to the gills, but they were usable… enough, she hoped.

The backpack swung off her shoulders, and Cinder rubbed the feeling back into her hands carefully, her exposed flesh having lost sensation from the sheer cold surrounding it.

She'd have thought the constant adrenaline high from carrying 15 pounds of high explosives around would keep her warm, but apparently, it did not.

Cinder personally thought that was bullshit, but she'd be damned if she said something like that aloud in Raven's presence, so instead she focused on carefully removing each of the charges from her backpack.

Sienna had indeed come through, and the refitted and modified mining charges felt heavy in her hands as she looked upon them. They were stable… barely, she hoped.

Each one consisted of a very simple dust mixture that was "pointed" from what Raven had explained, and it was imperative that these things be placed gently, silver side down, on whatever she was hoping to destroy, then the caps inserted into the mass of dust laden clay, and then, only then, would she be backing off to the minimum safe distance.

Cinder had 3 charges, and there were 3 tanks here, massive monstrosities that smelled even through the thick metal coating. She was lucky she hadn't eaten before this, feeling sure she'd have lost her breakfast if she had.

The first one set against the cold metal of the sewage tank, and Cinder carefully set the blasting cap into the explosive dust clay, before she stepped back and moved to the next tank.

The second finished, and the third was in her grasp when a blast wave knocked her off her feet and sent the roof of the building skywards.

She saw a shape cloaked in red and black armor fly from the windows, chased by another cloaked in green energy a second later.

Raven skidded to a stop a dozen feet from Cinder, and spat out blood and a tooth onto the ground, a masked Atlesian specialist landing right in front of her a moment later. The woman flicked her long, curved sword, and a thin spray of red flew free from it. A moment passed between the two of them, with Raven standing up to her feet, and the long, menacing sound of Omen being drawn.

"Never expected you to take on a kid, Raven."

Her voice was cold, strange, and it immediately reminded Cinder of the doctors she'd seen on the TV in the hotel, the cold ones, the strange ones.

This specialist wore a mask, a stylized tortoise, with its jaws open wide on her face. From behind it, harsh, cold yellow eyes flicked to Cinder, and they crinkled, the woman was smiling at her.

"It's ok sweetie, we'll get you safe and sound soon."

Her voice was warm, caring, kind, and nothing like Raven's voice, it was the voice of someone who had something to protect and cherish, someone who hadn't lost it all.

Why was it comforting to hear herself addressed like that?

Cinder froze, and in that moment, Raven screamed and rushed her.

Omen met the woman's strange sword in a clash of sparks and a burst of flame.

The fight devolved instantly. The woman kept making overtures towards Cinder, and Raven would meet her at every turn, stopping her advance as Cinder stood there, frozen, unable to move.

Another clash of sparks, and then the woman was right in front of Cinder, another pair of Atlesians had joined the fray, how had Cinder not… seen them? The strong one's gloved hands were reaching out for her, that calm voice once more saying.

"It's ok, we know you were kidnapped, we'll get you back now."

The flashes of light revealed Raven fighting hard against two others, two who matched each other flawlessly, and Cinder found herself facing this Atlesian, the woman moving closer, a step closer, and then reaching out for her arms.

"My name is Tortuga, I'm an Ace-Op under Lieutenant General Ironwood, we're here to take you home."

She spoke, smiling through her mask and bandana.

Cinder stepped back, and Tortuga stepped closer.

"It's ok, I know I'm really scary, but everything's gonna be ok now."

She tugged her mask down, and the bandanna followed a second later, revealing a pale skinned woman with scars, a short mass of light hair framed high cheekbones and a smattering of freckles on her face. The features of those born to high society in Atlas, the features of someone from that island.

Cinder tried to stagger backwards, and Tortuga snapped a hand out and caught her wrist, her smile never quite left her face.

"Come on, quickly, while my teammates keep her distracted."

Cinder tried to pull away, and Tortuga's grip tightened sharply, as she began to pull the girl along with her, her hand moving to a commbead in her ear.

"Tortuga, command, I have the package, begin extraction now."

The bead chirped gently, and Torguga took Cinder by the hand and began leading her elsewhere.

No… this was wrong, why was this happening… Raven hadn't kidnapped her, had she? She'd promised Summer…

Why did they want her so badly?

Something about this didn't add up…

"Why me?"

Tortuga stopped, turned to her, turned to look carefully at her. Another scream from Raven, and this one came with a spark of brilliant white, lightning dust, sending one of the two fighters flying from Raven.

She had to delay as long as possible. As long as it took for Raven to reach her.

"Why not you? You're an Atlesian citizen, kidnapped by a former huntress. For some nefarious purpose, I'm sure. But really, it's no worry, we'll get you back safe and sound, match you up with your surviving family, and everything will be ok."

She should feel warm, is what this woman's voice says, she should feel ok, should tag along evenly and easily with her.

Cinder does not want this, and she feels cold. Colder and colder now, and then, Tortuga is pulling her along, tugging her towards the hovering form of an incoming gunship, and in that moment, Cinder realizes something.

If she gets on that gunship, she will never see Raven again.

"CINDER!"

She whirls around, Tortuga's grip like iron on her wrist, pulling her towards that gunship, but its Raven, and Raven is fighting towards her, and casting the two of her opponents aside like so much chaff, and then Cinder feels Tortuga's grip change and she knows she's about to be thrown.

Her semblance and aura usage are so instinctual that she barely even feels it when they activate.

Tortuga feels it.

Cinder takes a breath in, and lets the flames inside her burn out.

Her aura flares, and a heat haze twists the air around her.

Tortuga's aura flares green, and that is the only thing that saves her as Cinder exhales and lets her semblance tear its way out of her skin.

The flare of heat sends the huntress reeling, her grip fading on Cinder's wrist as the girl scuttles away from her, tearing across the terrain, her hand slips low, tearing into the gravel, superheating the stones.

A kick sends the cloud of overheated gravel into the air behind her, and the sound of booted footsteps behind Cinder catches her a moment later. Tortuga.

A hiss of pain, a muttered curse.

" She really is nice. "

A shame, then.

Cinder kicks off, running towards her backpack, towards the explosives that will let them save the city, even at the cost of a little damage.

She hears Tortuga behind her, but just ahead of her, there is Raven, there's only one of her opponents, the other splayed across the dirt and dust, bleeding from a wound, her mother steps in front of her, and she whispers as Cinder runs past.

"My part is done. Just a moment longer, little Kite."

She stands behind Cinder, her voice an angry hiss, as Cinder runs and runs and runs for the tanks, she briefly makes out words from Tortuga.

"Stop her! Stop her now!"

But she is too fast, and her backpack and preparation expected. A flick of her finger sets the cap, and she slams the charge onto the tanks.

Then she is screaming for Raven. Screaming and speaking until her lungs burn out of air.

"Now Raven now! Get clear!"

She sees her mother take to the skies, sees her transform in the blink of an eye into a bird, and then Cinder is running for the fenceline.

It is slow, close, and she feels the pursuing bootsteps of Tortuga, the woman's longer stride eating up the distance.

Cinder drags her fingers into the dust again, gathering as much material as she can, concentrating it, burning it, feeling the shape she wants, exerting her control over the consistent shift as the material began to fuse.

Every step counted here.

Tortuga reaching for her, Cinder leapt for the fenceline, aura pushing her muscles more than they'd ever meant to go.

She felt something tear, wrenching her body in one direction curling her back up and over as she cleared the fenceline, drawing the string of the bow back.

The bow, a crude thing of multicolored glass, shone in the darkness, and Cinder let go of the string a moment later.

Tortuga, midair over the fence right behind her, a bored expression on her face as she chased Cinder, saw the bow too late to do anything about it.

"AUGH"

Her cry of agony sounded large for the world, and Cinder winced sympathetically as the glass arrow buried itself clean through the woman's leg, shattering her aura and sinking deep into her thigh.

Then she was falling, crashing into the ground and her own aura was shattering, cracking around her back to absorb the fall. It hurt, with lances of pain vomiting across her side like the worlds most spastic painter.

She clutched a hand to her side, twitching and curling up on the ground, it hurt and it stung and it felt like someone had torn off her skin, and she could hear Tortuga getting up and walking towards her.

How much damage could the woman sustain!? How much more would Cinder have to make her take? Could she even continue?

Her apparent captors boots clunked closer, and the woman spoke quietly.

"How… much has she twisted you, dear?"

Cinder crawled further from Tortuga, fingers cutting and bleeding on the gravel. She knew her aura should have been higher, but… reaching into the place where she felt her soul and semblance, all she felt was agonizing pain.

Was she dry? Had she run out of power? Was her aura gone for good?

Was she doomed to return to normal?

She'd never felt like this before, and Tortuga was walking towards her faster now!

A hand wrapped around her ankle, and Cinder whirled around, a leg lashing out against the woman.

Tortuga caught her leg and smiled at her, and a thin golden trail of Cinder's aura burned up and into her, fading into the deep green of the woman's own aura.

She was stealing Cinder's aura. Taking it from her. ROBBING HER OF HER POWER!

Cinder flares her semblance, turning the ground hotter and hotter under Tortuga's feet, so hot that she sees it begin to boil and sublimate. She grins, and Tortuga flinches as the ground underneath her bubbles.

"What on-"

The explosion blows out Cinder's eardrums and sends her flying, the cloud, and smell of sewage pouring into the air around her as the plant detonates in a spray of brilliant, flaming debris.

She's blinking the soot and ash from her eyes, struggling and rubbing at them, the ringing in her ears so painful that it eclipses the scratches and lacerations on her body. She can't see Tortuga at all, and a rising column of soot and smoke soars into the sky, the scent of waste pouring into the city streets in a noxious cloud that has people fleeing in all directions.

Cinder definitely didn't pump her fist into the air, firstly, because that would be hardly composed, and secondly, because it was broken and wasn't listening to her muscle commands.

Stifling a moan of agony as she sat up, Cinder looked for Raven, she couldn't see her mom anywhere, the smoke and stench so bad her eyes were watering and she could barely breathe.

Her arm was clearly broken, not… horribly, but enough that she was left staggering away from the impact site.

The explosives on the tanks must have been set off by her semblance's shockwave. She'd experimented with superheating things beyond their tolerance before, but this is the second time now that she's had to do it to save herself from certain doom or worse.

It's enough for her to stagger to the very edge of the plant, fighting past the shattered fenceline.

She has to stop when she hears the clear, and horrible sound of boots clomping down on the ground behind her.

Cinder can't whirl, her aura is shattered and she's fighting exhaustion, but she turns slowly, breathing in and out as deeply and as slowly as she can. If she has to run, she'll need the extra air in her lungs.

Her heartbeat feels like a racetrack, and stepping free of the flames, with her uniform unfairly untouched, is the face of Tortuga, still with a pleasant, if slightly strained smile on her face.

"Didn't see that coming, kid. What kind of semblance is that?"

She's conversational, kind, open, and everything about her screams at Cinder that she's a monster in a field of monsters, and that she's somehow the worst of all of them.

"Hmm, heat transfer, maybe? No… not enough siphoning, and you're not any different thermally than normal… you've definitely got burn marks though…"

She continued to advance, and Cinder stepped back further and further, preparing to run, even if she knows that this might be the last moment.

"Ah!"

Tortuga's fist met open palm, and she smiled like a cat with a canary.

"You're a calorkinetic! A heat semblance that is independent of normal physical laws… hmm, can you surpass the aura limit? Boil someone's skin in their body?"

Cinder tries not to cringe at the thought.

Tortuga continues, unabashed.

"Blood? Air? Did you know most fire victims die from the blazing air? Which burns out their lungs and suffocates them?"

She did not, and felt her stomach trying to flip and turn.

Tortuga stopped moving towards her, and instead raised a rifle up to her shoulder.

"Right, kid, time to give it up, I don't know what kind of fucked up semblance Masque used on you, but clearly it's beyond messed up your head, hell, I don't even know how she managed to unlimit your semblance, because really, kid, you could immolate yourself with something like that! Are you crazy?"

Cinder paused, baring her teeth, feeling blood drip down her arm, and she smiled that bloody grin wide.

"No. Masque didn't use her semblance on me. She took me with her of my own free will."

Forcing the words out hurts her lips, leaving blazing trails of indescribable agony across her face. But she says them anyway, because Cinder would be damned if she let someone else continue to assume she was an innocent little girl.

"And good for everyone else! Good for my "family" too!"

Cinder pauses, and flexes her hands, and the air around her began to shimmer and twist.

"They're better off without me!"

Tortuga's face twisted with misery, and she stepped forwards.

"Oh… no kid, no they miss you dearly…"

Cinder met her eyes, word for word, and did her level best to fix her tormentor with a gaze like Raven, with a gaze like Summer, all dead eyes shining with horrible experience.

"Because if I would have stayed, I would have killed all of them."

She didn't let up, as even Tortuga stepped back for a moment, her shadows finally joining her.

"You wanted to know if my semblance can pierce aura? Let me tell you this, I would have burned the two of them to death, slowly, and painfully."

Her voice felt cold, and her body felt anger twisting through it, the coiling serpent in her gut.

She stepped back once more, and a cool, cold stone, a wall, greeted her.

"Metal, actual, this is Tortuga, the kid is showing signs of serious mind influence, or… worse. Please advise."

Tortuga had raised a hand to her commbead, speaking to someone on the other end, and all Cinder was thinking about was where the hell was Raven!?

Her aura was still gone, and wouldn't recharge until she could actually calm down, and while she'd started breathing exercises with Raven, the woman hadn't been able to teach her much, she'd spent every bit of practicing sparring with Vernal, to bring Cinder's sister's skills up to speed.

Vernal… where was she when Cinder needed her?

For that matter, where in the blazes was Raven!?

Cinder twitched her fingers behind her back, weaving the dust and the wall slightly with her power, twisting and shaping the brick and stone, she felt the heat sear against her, and winced inwardly, before shoving the shape she was making deeper into the wall.

She could only hope it was an effective enough insulator, with how lethal temperatures could turn her into… well, a corpse.

"Mmkay, welp, she's messing with the wall around her right now, given the extreme heat readings coming off of it, twisting it and shaping it, or something. You sure we still can't go anything more than "gentle" with her?"

A burst of noise, so loud that even Cinder could hear it over the crackling flames, announced that Tortuga's idea had been shot dead by Ironwood, assuming that was who she was even speaking to.

Then she stopped moving and stared in slackjawed disbelief at her comm.

"Sir, you can't be-"

A burst of noise again.

"After all that effort!?"

"The White Fang did what !?"

Cinder held her breath and continued working her semblance into the wall, pulling material and sublimating it into her desired form as Tortuga stamped her foot like a child having a tantrum and growled.

"Understood. Sir. Will that be all?"

There was another burst of static, and then the woman turned to Cinder and smiled once more, that gentle, caring mask firmly descending over her features.

"Can you hold out, honey? For just a little while longer while we take care of some things on our end? We'll get you out of that woman's claws soon enough…"

She trailed off, moving into the smoke and disappearing shortly afterward.

Cinder let out a deep, harsh breath she hadn't quite realized she was holding, and desperately tried to regain her composure, letting her semblance go and the wall reharden into normal stone.

Then she collapsed and began to sob openly until strong arms encircled her shoulders and pulled her into an embrace that was all warmth and all kindness, and then it spoke.

"I was looking for you… are you ok?"

That… was not Raven's voice.

The last thing Cinder saw was a flash of red hair and green eyes, grinning down mischievously at her. Then she was falling into darkness, too weak to even hold her arms up, a voice faintly calling after her.

"Cinder- Cinder!?"

Chapter 20
Raven tore through the debris and the ruins of the wastewater facility, Omen cutting through the debris and wreckage like it was so much chattel. Her frustrations boiled within her, and it was all she could do to hold the storm within. To prevent the emotions from ripping open tears in reality, to stop her from reaching Cinder.

She'd seen the girl disappear behind the fence, seen her disappear completely from view, but her link to Cinder was strong, she could feel it tensing and retracting, alongside occasional bouts of pain. Instincts within Raven tore at her, tried to convince her to go immediately to her little kite's, her daughter .

The crack of a gunshot and the sparkling pain of gravel smashing into her knees directed her attention back to the fight. Clearly, James had learned his lesson from the fight against Tyrian, and had taken it exactly in the wrong direction.

Cordovan's little pet assassins were fighting hard, and backed up by a specialist team that had been flown in on a gunship. Even now, the specialists were laying suppressive fire in wide, overarching cones that swept across her avenues of escape. They were trying to box her in, trying to hem her actions down and make her cornered.

But why?

If James wanted her dead for this perceived terrorist attack, then he could easily be doing so, and with the state of the plant around them? He could probably justify dust missile usage.

So why wasn't he?

A flick of a blade, and an assassin appearing at her elbow shifted her attention back to the fight. A shower of dust sparks announced the clash as Omen's guard intercepted the thin, long blade, the assassin frowning slightly before vanishing once more. She was good, Raven had to give her that. Cordovan had an air for picking the right ones, and the skill showed. This one fought with a rapier and dagger, her compatriot…

She listened, and the crack of a high velocity round tearing through the air announced exactly where the sniper was.

The round itself smashed into the alleyway at her back, telling her rather firmly that she wouldn't be dodging the next one.

She straightened, and the specialists closed off her escape, advancing into the alleyway and facing her evenly. She didn't recognize them, categorizing them simply as obstacles. A check on her link showed Cinder relaxing, no danger, the faint impulses of unconsciousness settling in.

The tribe would have mocked her for such worrying, if Cinder was not strong enough to survive on her own, she would never have made it there.

Somehow, she feels that once more, Summer has rubbed off on her when she realizes that she can't find it in herself to care about the tribe's mentality towards her little kite.

She flicks Omen out, and cocks her head to one side. With Cinder fading into unconsciousness, she was likely safe for the moment. Which meant Raven could cut loose.

The clouds overhead darken as Raven's blood begins to sing. The unearthly melody rippling through the area, twisting the light into jagged fractals that drown the street in scarlet tinged light.

Raven smiles, and the voices in her soul sing as the localized storm fills the alleyway with mist. Mist so thick that specialists are swamped in seconds, drawing clouds across her form, and letting her vanish into the blanket of thick, pea soup fog. The storm howled within her, howled at Raven to rip, to tear and slay and kill. But it didn't control her, and as her eyes opened wide, and the flames burned clear at the edges of her pupils, only then did she strike.

Raven flashed forwards, vanishing in a blur of motion that sent debris and trash from the battle flying in her wake. A specialist in her path was slammed into the wall, cracking the concrete, sending the man flying. His squadmate tried to bring her weapon to bear, and Raven was already gone as the burst of machine gun fire ripped through the space she'd been in before.

She had to escape the killbox, which meant going right through the specialist at the end of the road, the crack of a hypersonic round tearing a gouge in her aura, dropping her into the red. Glancing blows made an impact, and this thing… the bullet spitting off of her aura in a flash of sparks, she turned to the left, then leapt at the first of Cordovin's pet hunters, the man's nose giving way with a wet crunch of cartilage as he pinwheeled back into the wall. Raven darted to the side, and brought down a hailstorm in her wake, thick, ball sized chunks of ice covering the street, the debris, and the fires as she ran for it.

A part of her exuberant in the simple motion as she bolted, hearing shouts of confusion, shouts of uncertainty, and shouts for orders echoing through the mist and hail behind her. Her powers flickering to full blast, urging her to turn and hurt and kill and dash, and for a moment, Raven turned, hungry eyes flicking to behind her, but… she stopped a moment later. Fighting her powers until they faded gently, until the flames guttered out and she was gasping for breath.

The joy, the rampant, manic joy… she'd forgotten. She'd forgotten how it felt, how it amplified the worst impulses she had into a burning blaze of power that wanted her to consume and destroy this foul place, to set out and find Nightingale, and to rip her limb from limb of her own accord.

Raven struggled to gain control over herself, struggled to find traces of her purpose. The sewage tanks had been ruptured, already, the foul smell was making its way into Argus, propelled by the wind, if they were lucky, she'd be able to snap the controlled civilians free of the pain and the suffering Nightingale had planned for them.

If she wanted to destroy this city, she'd have a harsh fight ahead of her.

Raven leaned against a wall, sheathing Omen at her side, and catching her breath as she removed a scroll from her bag. Flipping it on, she checked for Cinder's burner location, and frowned, it was only a single street over. Far from safe, why was the girl unconscious there?

Raven gritted her teeth, sending a simple message down the line, throughout contacts and burners, knowing that Sienna and Kali would receive her message.

She looked carefully around the corner of the building, and saw nothing, no shape of Cinder, no apparent remains of her. Where was she?

No all clear had been received, which meant… she'd fallen asleep. Not close, either…

A chill ran down Raven's spine.

Cinder had been taken.

Eyes narrowed, Raven scanned the alleyway, traces were thin, but present, another huntress had been here, likely part of the perimeter team? No, alone by her footsteps, which meant…

Nearby transportation? Not state sponsored, they'd not allow a single child, even one armed, to be taken if they were here on official business.

So who?

One of the three families? Possible, more possible by the second, but who would have taken Cinder?

Not Ides, they were Branwen through and through, and Blanche's death would have warded them firmly away from Cinder. Especially after they'd lost a ward and tribute to Raven herself.

No, not the Ides family. What about the royalty of Mistral? Unlikely, given their prior knowledge of Cinder would be barebones at best.

The name came to her mind as a curse fled her lips.

Nikos.

Helena had been interested in Cinder, had been interested in a squire for Pyrrha, and Cinder herself had met the girl. She'd not made a secret of wanting another focus for Pyrrha to not burn out on her family.

She ran down what she knew of Nikos, precious little, beyond what had happened to Juno. Precious little information beyond that they were prestigious fighters and monsters in and around the tournament game. But politics? Seneschals to Mistral's king and queen, guards, but little else. Now that Mistral had finally moved towards a council, much of the family had been split apart, with Athena Nikos and Alexander Nikos watching over the head councilwoman of Mistral, the former queen.

How much did that aid her?

Little, if at all, she needed a local source of information.

Her thoughts shifted, turning towards another woman, the second of her wards.

Would Vernal know?

As if heading off her impulse, Raven's scroll chimed gently with the sound of an incoming call.

Vernal.

"Report."

The girl pauses a moment, perhaps surprised by the anger in Raven's voice.

"Shit you really care about her…"

Raven stifles the urge to shoot someone, preferably Vernal.

"Right fine, never do that caring shit with me, but I know where she's going and who's got her."

"Tracking us?"

"Of course, Boss Lady, you don't pay me to laze about in the den, much as I wish you did."

"Who."

"Nikos family airship, crest prominently on the side and on the engines, it's not the parents, though. They fly the fancy new Atlesian brand. Definitely older sister, but she didn't intend harm, at least, not to my knowledge."

"Did you watch her take Cinder?"

"I watched her pick up the girl and put her in the back as gentle as a feather, she seemed genuinely concerned."

"Fine. Where were they headed?"

"Family mansion, likely the Squire's quarters if her intent when we spoke about her was anything to go off of."

Raven snapped the scroll shut with a click and assessed herself, looking first down at her aura reserves, then into the flow of emotional danger that was the Maiden's powers.

For the longest time, Raven had known her power to be a crutch, and a dangerous one, filled with the voices of those who came before who disagreed with her, save for a few specific voices the chorus often drowned out in its endless asking of "be good". They had hated her decisions to abandon Summer all those years ago, to leave Yang behind as well.

That had taken a toll on the memories they took, on the emotions they damaged her with even now.

But that resistance had begun to fade in the wake of Summer's death and her actions as they'd continued to benefit Cinder over herself.

By now, the voices felt as though they were singing in concert with Raven as she moved to the edge of the alleyway and leapt to the roof. As she ran along the buildings and concentrated. The maiden's powers had always felt like a song to her, a screaming, discordant chorus of agony and rage and all the fury of nature herself.

Now they played a chorus on her bones and her muscles, and she resisted the urge to sing with them, letting only a vague, careful humming emerge from her lips.

She'd fly like the wind itself, and Nikos would rue the day they took something from her, they would rue the day that they'd taken Summer's last gift to her.

Because what else was Cinder at this point? Beyond a gift from Summer, one last lesson to tell her in the most firm way possible what she'd done hadn't worked out. Here she was, rushing into danger, darting into the darkness and reaching for another chance to take Cinder out of this place.

It cinched her decision, then, the simple fact was that she attracted far, far too much attention. It was no place to raise a child, no place to take care of her, but… there was one person who would take her, and one who would grudgingly watch over her.

Sure, Taiyang might also just punch her in the face the moment she appeared at his door, but he'd listen to her, hear her out, and then he'd hopefully take Cinder off her hands, before more harm came to her.

Then… Raven could apologize to Yang, could tell her how truly sorry she was for everything.

The rooftop she landed on hard cracked slightly as she pushed off and leapt into the skies once more. The airship, heading to the Nikos manner almost certainly, meant a rough journey up the cable ties and mountainous terrain that surrounded Argus' upper terraces.

It was a journey she could make work.

Cinder recalled awakening in a bed, the soft beeping of several medical machines nearby her alerting her that she definitely wasn't safe in the tunnels with Raven, and that her injuries… may have been more severe than she'd first thought.

She opened her eyes slowly, letting vision fill in gaps in the world, and finding herself staring into the deep green eyes of someone she immediately recognized. A woman who had spoken to her about the way that Raven was treating her. And one who Raven didn't trust.

Then again, Raven didn't trust anyone, so maybe her mom wasn't the best authority on these matters.

"Nikos."

She coughed after saying it, her voice scratchy and weak. A glass of water pressed into her fingers as the other woman nodded once.

"Helena Nikos."

Cinder nodded once, and sipped, the water was cool, and it helped her throat feel dramatically better the longer she drank. She took stock of the room she was in, noting the darkness from the window, before she calmly said.

"My mother might kill you for saving me."

Helena smiled.

"I suspected as much, you do know who she is, right?"

Cinder nodded once.

"She is my mother, she saved my life and took me away from my awful stepsisters and their mother."

Helena raised an eyebrow.

"Raven Branwen, growing a heart? After all these years… who would have thought."

Cinder sat up in the bed and looked at Helena, her aura was returning, slower now that she was awake, but she estimated she had around half her reserves if she had to run or fight. She could use that screen, as well, if she got the opportunity, given that Helena didn't know she had it yet.

"What do you mean by "growing a heart"?"

The question came easily, but it seemed to have startled Helena, who flushed as she let out a brief chuckle.

"You're… rather precocious, aren't you? Not defending Raven's attitude or behavior?"

Cinder grimaced.

"Mom is violent and vicious, and I'd like to get to know you before she kills you for kidnapping me."

Helena threw up her hands.

"Oh for the brothers sake- I saved your life."

Cinder nodded.

"That is true, but you also kidnapped me. Raven is not a forgiving mother, and she might let you live for saving my life from the smoke. It was the smoke right?"

The other woman nodded grimly, before Cinder threw the blankets off of herself and began examining herself, calmly speaking.

"Lacerations on the torso, as well as upper back. Hmm, Ironwood will be very angry."

She watched from the mirror as Helena visibly flinched when Ironwoods name was brought up.

Cinder continued.

"Did you not know? Ironwood is the reason that Atlas has this entire city in such a rush, well, that and Nightingale. But she is a separate problem. Ironwood is here for me. For much the same reason I suspect that you took me in the first place. You want me for Pyrrha, don't you?"

Helena flinched again, but stammered a response out.

"N-no, you were at risk of death from smoke inhalation! Aura won't prevent you from suffocating, especially if you lose consciousness while you're in a giant cloud of the stuff with low aura! It can only keep the level of oxygen you have inside you and purify small amounts."

Cinder raised an eyebrow.

"Raven would have reached me, and by my estimation, she would have reached me far sooner the moment she detected my body in any real form of distress."

The girl studied herself in the mirror once more and took stock of her appearance. Blue… was not her color, and she'd be having words with whoever designed this gown to be so vastly large on her- wait.

It was too big, big enough to fit a woman, though…

Hadn't Raven said something about a missing Nikos? The mother of little Pyrrha and, from her evaluation, Helena?

Helena couldn't be older than 21 or so, which, with Pyrrha being her age, meant that a 9 year age difference between them?

Hadn't Raven been trained by a Nikos? But… by who?

J-Juno! That was her name.

This gown was sized for someone tall, fit, but the cut suggested a woman, and as Cinder casually inspected it, her eye was drawn to the small tag peeking out from the leg, a tag that read "J" with a simple curve in it.

"How's Juno, hmm~?"

The name caught Helena off guard, and her face darkened instantly, she looked as though she wanted to say something, and Cinder caught the sadness in her eyes, even as her mouth began to move.

"Juno is on retreat at the moment, Argus does not suit her, not at this climate."

Cinder read that motion, Helena hated saying something… but someone had broken it into her, hadn't they. What did they hold over her head, what were they blackmailing her with?

Pyrrha?

It could be Pyrrha, an older sister's love for her younger sister, a sense of duty to family protruding…

Cinder nodded, that wasn't something she'd experienced, but it damned well made sense to her, families on TV acted like that, and while she personally didn't believe that such a thing could exist, it would make logical sense that this woman would act in such a manner. No?

Yes, duty to family, and a threat from… either the matriarch or patriarch, if Cinder was being honest, she knew nothing about either of them.

"Hmm, do either of your parents know about my presence here? Where is little Pyrrha?"

Another flinch, Helena was a huntress, but something about Cinder was putting her off guard and making her sloppy, easy to read and easy to understand.

Cinder hid a smile as she coughed into her hand. This was too easy, too easy to make her squirm, and delay until Cinder could make a run for the door.

"My parents are elsewhere, and it would be best if they stayed unaware of your presence."

Cinder rolled her eyes.

"They already know. Stupid girl."

Helena bristled.

"I flew you straight here, landed with no one seeing me-"

Cinder grinned.

"Oh? Did no one actually see you? Or did you ignore the servants that prepared this room, the nurse most certainly on your parents payroll, among other things… hah! You're so dumb! Even my older sisters make you look dumb! At least they only hurt me where no one could see!"

She couldn't help herself, she burst out giggling, laughing at the stupidity, did this prissy rich girl really think that the servants of her house didn't know about Cinder's presence? Really!?

Helena advanced on her, growling, and Cinder's eyes met the other womans and stopped her cold. Her hands shimmered with heat haze and she flicked open the door leading to her semblance.

"If you attempt to touch me without my permission again, I will burn you until there is nothing left but ash."

Helena backed down, and Cinder turned towards the walls, inspecting them, carefully searching… there.

She reached out a hand, placed it firmly on the smooth stone, and pulled her semblance into the wall, withdrawing a melted, glass sword from within it after a second or two.

"Show me to the courtyard. Raven will come for me, and if you want me to meet with Pyrrha and have time to escape, you do not have much time."

Then, she stalked out of the hospital room, noting it's presence in the basement, Cinder shook her head at the iron bars in front of her, blocking her access to the rest of the house.

Juno… restrained and chained down here.

Cinder concluded a number of things.

One. Adults were idiots.

Two. Adults were especially idiots when their loved ones were concerned.

Three. Raven was wrong. She'd be damned well certain to rub that in her mom's face when they got back. Not only were adults stupid, but Vernal and Raven were far different from the normal idiots around them!

Raven wasn't there, and she hadn't saved Cinder yet, and while Cinder would be damned to sit here being useless until mom came for her, a part of her really wanted to just sit here and watch as that damned idiot Nikos woman watched her home crumble around her.

Hmm, wasn't that a vengeful thought. Best to tamp that away, if she'd been trying to help, genuinely, then that wasn't so bad.

Cinder did stop, however, when she reached the bars.

A faint… was that a scream?

Cinder pumped aura into her hearing, face furrowed, eyebrows narrow.

Helena almost spoke, but Cinder stopped her cold, listening, hearing…

Something cracked, something dragged… something began to click gently in the darkness, and then.

A maniacal giggle and laughter.

She knew that voice damned well, and, hissing in anger, reflected.

Tyrian damned Callows was here. Hunting Pyrrha? Yes, no? The Nikos family were seneschals and terrifying fighters… if he removed them from play, or worse, got them into Nightingale's embrace, then…

Then Raven and her plan wouldn't work, and Blake, and Sienna and Kali and Ghira would die.

Cinder hissed again.

"Fine. Delaying until Raven can reach me."

Helena started to say something, but Cinder wasn't listening, running her hands up and over the stone and support beams… she needed something made of silicate. Badly.

A bowstring… anything!

Dammit.

Cinder focused her hearing, listening for the footsteps, and the shriek of Tyrian's mad cackling which always, without ceasing echoed.

"Oh little Chickadee~! With you captured! Your family will come running to save you~! They won't succeed little one, they'll all fall down~! What was it they said about the kings horses and his men?"

She hated him. Hated him so much.

Her semblance poured into the stonework.

"Helena, you'll get one shot, this bastard has your sister."

The woman had gone quiet as his insane babble had reached them. Drawing a pair of wicked looking daggers from within her sleeves, she nodded to Cinder.

Tyrian was quick and evasive, and the hallways here were lit up, as his presence neared and Cinder felt she couldn't last any longer, she raised the stone bow, formed from melted rock built into the buildings foundations, took careful aim, and loosed her arrow.

Tyrian heard the arrow coming in, and promptly dropped his burden, a very, very sick looking Pyrrha Nikos, before he turned and saw Cinder and Helena.

"Oh! My goddess! A lost little bird, come home to rest at last~! How have you been little Cinder~! My goddess is so very eager to meet you!"

He leaned forwards, dull yellow eyes staring ahead, and Cinder remembered the fight against Summer and Raven.

He was blind, or nearly blind.

"Have you come to be gently taken home? Or do we have to do this the hard way?"

Cinder smirked.

"Hard way."

Helena steeled herself visibly, and Cinder pleaded and begged.

Come on mom… need you now, really bad… I can't fight him, and I don't think this Nikos can either.

Whether the brother gods were real or not, Cinder thanked them anyways as the snap-hiss of Raven's portal crackled to life at her side, and a volley of revolver rounds tore through that same portal and snapped into Tyrian, forcing him back.

Raven stepped through a moment later, gently twisted, and kicked Cinder through the portal.

Cinder could barely squeak out a "Mom!" before it shut with another snap-hiss and she was being caught by Vernal.

"Wait! Mom! Mom! NO! NO PLEASE! Please don't leave-"

Her legs gave out, and she collapsed.

"Me…"

Her voice trailed off into the silence.

Vernal was there, rubbing her hands into Cinder's shoulders, gently messing with her muscles, trying to get her to calm down.

Cinder couldn't focus on it, Raven was gone, and that meant that she was alone. Even with Vernal there. It wasn't the same.

Her mom was gone.

She sniffled once, and then began to sob. Vernal wrapped her arms around her, Cinder taking in the scent of her older sister, and feeling the comfort that she was so carefully pouring into her, and yet she felt a terrible clench in her gut.

Raven wouldn't come out of that alive.

She knew it, and that sunk in so… horribly deep.

Vernal dragged Cinder up, dragged her away, and moved towards the exit down into the building they were sitting upon. It was something large, apartments… Cinder didn't care, she just let Vernal grab her and drag her because Vernal somehow actually knew how awful she was feeling. She kept a steady hand on her back, rubbing slow circles into it as Cinder sobbed and cried.

As Vernal moved her throughout Argus, Cinder's anger at Vernal's inaction grew, until she finally snapped at the corner of a road.

"WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP HER?"

Vernal didn't smile, didn't say anything initially, and Cinder raised a fist to hit her, aura flashing black, but Vernal sidestepped it, tripped her, and then straddled her and pressed her face close to Cinders.

"Do you honest to god think Boss lady would let me live if I left you alone after the day you've had?"

Cinder tried to hit her, letting out a terrible scream that cracked her throat and had Vernal gaining a heavily conflicted look on her face.

"Look, your mom took me on for one reason and only one reason. That I would, no matter what, take care of you. She's a big girl, she knows what she's getting into. She can handle herself. And if she can't…"

Vernal trailed off for a moment.

"Then we need to make ready to leave the city stat. I can take you to the tribe, but suspect that's not what she'd want… did she have anyone in her life?"

Cinder muttered.

"Just… Summer and Tai… and her brother."

Vernal nodded once.

"Ok. Tai… we'll look for him after we find her brother Qrow. He should… hopefully, remember enough Branwen sigils that we can leave a trail for him to follow."

She stood up, picking up Cinder with easy strength, and whispering to her gently.

"It'll be ok, promise, we'll get out of this city first, and make our way down to… where was Raven taking you?"

Cinder nodded her head slightly, but unconsciousness was already claiming her again, and she could feel the sensation of blood running down her back and legs… she'd torn stitches.

Dammit.

Raven was going to kill her for tearing her clothes as badly as she had.

Chapter 21
Raven

Raven and Helena struck as one the moment the portal snapped closed behind them. There was no time to speak, no time for deliberation, they hated each other, and they knew that, Raven knowing that there would damned well be hell to pay after this. If they survived.

She focused on that, focused on the memory of the joy and pride in Cinder's face when that portal had cracked open, focused on that strength, on how it filled her with joy to see her daughter so happy to see her.

Even the memory of what she'd done to Yang couldn't strangle that joy, as Raven's eyes snapped open and violet flames burst to life on the corners. She felt the maidens sing with her, and… for once, Raven let them examine the memory of her second daughter, of her first daughter as well, she let the spirits examine them, felt them coo and murmur over the two girls. From Yang's sleeping face, to Cinder's defiant one, and for that single, one moment.

They were aligned in body and purpose.

Tyrian would not be allowed to claim another on this night.

Raven surged forwards in the blink of an eye, passing Helena's daggers as they flew towards Tyrian, the woman shifting her posture to a crouched one, firing a rifle at the scorpion faunus as he darted and ducked and dashed back and forth.

The slam of Raven's body into his caught him by surprise as she slapped his tail aside with Omen's sheathed blade, before drawing an icy line of magic down his side, the shards of ice carving deep and blasting him apart as the scorpion faunus tumbled end over end.

He stood, briefly, spitting at her.

"You Bitch~!"

But… a chime from his scroll, and then he was running away, tossing over his shoulder.

"Chase me, chase me if you must, dear birds~! But be aware, that one stifles and dies the farther she is from medical help~! And your little fangies will suffer without your intervention, dear mama raven~!"

His insane babbling snapped both Raven and Helena out of their murderous stances, and with regret, Raven relaxed her hold over the maidens, and they faded into her body.

Another line crossed for her daughter. How much more would she risk? How many more of her lines and codes would she break and shatter in the path of making Cinder feel at home, of providing for that girl in the same way that Summer once provided for her.

The answer didn't surprise Raven as she stood in front of the downed form of Pyrrha Nikos.

Protecting her from harm, even as Helena leaned in and began examining her.

"How did he get here?"

She'd barked at the other woman, snarling at her. Raven didn't initially respond, thinking over it.

It didn't make sense. Tyrian would have, should have won against them, there was no real reason for him to retreat unless…

Raven stiffened, her sword carving a portal open. She roared through it.

"Vernal, the camp is compromised, flee to the Fang, as quickly as you can!"

She didn't wait for a response, cutting off the portal and reaching for another portal. One she'd made long ago, one that she'd thought the connection had died off, one that was now reciprocated gently as Sienna Khan allowed the portal to snap open.

Raven didn't wait, leaping through as Omen snapped free of her sheathe.

And landed right in the middle of a damned warzone. A bolt shot past her head as Sienna grabbed her and dragged her down behind cover, hissing.

"Really pulling the miracle worker shit here, huh Rae?"

She nodded once, leaning back and asking quietly.

"Situation?"

Sienna's ears were flat to her skull, and she gave a hand signal over said shoulder, with a white fang soldier lifting what looked like an anti tank weapon to their shoulder. They checked their rear, noting no other fang, before snapping out from cover and squeezing the trigger.

The deafening blast of the rocket announced its presence as it soared towards the entrenched position.

"So, Nightingale has some serious defenses around this area, we walked right in before the killbox closed. Been pinned here for a hot minute now, and it's a damned good thing that you showed up."

Raven shook her head.

"Tyrian Callows was here, trying a decapitation play on the seneschal of the house Nikos, dunno what else, but it might be that Nightingale's been cut off from her supporters and is now fleeing."

Sienna nodded.

"That would explain the crowds of confused people flooding out of that noxious cloud. You and the little brat were successful, then?"

"Up until she got kidnapped by Helena Nikos for a moment. Had to bust her out, which was when we ran into Tyrian. But… it wasn't him, I suspected you were in trouble, so I came here, but I've got nothing now, dunno where Tyrian is at this point and I've got nothing, maybe Salem's withdrawing for the eon now?"

Sienna flashed her a grin.

"Maybe she is, can only hope."

The sounds of automatic weapons fire slowed, eventually ceasing, and the surviving White Fang began to pick themselves slightly out of cover, carefully inspecting their surroundings before they made their way towards Raven and Sienna. Of the dozen and a half that had gone with her, 6 or so were left. None were unwounded.

"Ok, we clear?"

One faunus, heavily scarred and bleeding from a puncture to her arm, rabbit ears carefully peeled, nodded once.

"Machines clicking dry, but still dry, no more traps, the rest of the building was empty, was all we heard before the advance team got torn up by the mines."

Sienna nodded, closing her eyes in grief.

"Then… we will have to mourn. Can we recover the dead?"

The woman shook her head.

"Very little is left, and the despair will be worse if we take them out of the walls. Let Ironwood have them, and we'll see what happens next, hmm?"

The tiger faunus nodded once. Sitting up, she wobbled to her feet and Raven took in the destruction around them.

The Theatre they'd thought Nightingale had taken refuge in had turned the entire street into a charnel house, dozens of innocent civilians had been hit and killed in the crossfire, and even more were simply chunks of froth and meat.

"Did she open fire into the crowd?"

Sienna grimaced.

"No. She had a human shield. She opened fire when she detected our people close to them."

"Fuck…"

None of them could adequately respond. The pain was… vicious and unpleasant. A grief and dull, sincere longing at the sheer waste of such things.

"Nightingale?"

Sienna shook her head.

"Gone before we even arrived, left a mocking laugh behind on the audiowaves. She's… so broken, so gone."

Raven had forgotten, Sienna had been one of the few who'd attended Nightingale's concerts seriously, back when she'd been a small time singer. The woman now reviled as a horrible monster had been a very different person once.

A person worthy of respect and adoration from her fans.

The loss was painful, but it meant nothing to Raven, who had long ago made her peace with very few people in the world truly mattering to her. But it meant more to Sienna, who co-led the Fang with the help of the Belladonna's.

"Get our people out of here, we'll be able to rely on Atlas to cover literally all of this up, but its better to escape before they can scapegoat us."

The group proceeded into the tunnels beneath the city, with her warning about Tyrian delivered, Raven stood up and made her way to an abandoned and deserted alleyway. The walls opened wide, and she sliced an opening into thin air after just a moment, letting her stride through the portal and directly into a small clearing where Vernal and Cinder were making food.

The small fire crackling, and the smell of stew cooking and roasting meat made Raven's stomach growl heartily as she strode out and took a seat near the other two. She smiled at them, the effort splitting her dry lips and making her wince, the motion distinctly unpracticed.

"Well done. Did you manage to scavenge from another cache in the city?"

She watched as Vernal winced and Cinder flinched.

"Ironwood hit them, all of them. Cinder managed to sneak us in ahead of a squad, but not by much, so we've only got the emergency grab and go stuff. They also definitely know we hit those locations, we weren't exactly subtle. So they'll know that we know the cache's are compromised."

Raven grimaced, the sudden dearth in emergency supplies for other elements of the Branwen tribe would be… rough, in a word.

Difficult to replace as well, which was another issue. With the tribe preparing to run for Vacuo, they would have needed those supplies.

Raven was going to catch hell for it in the only way the Branwen tribe acknowledged such an insult.

Incredible, unrestrained violence.

In that case, there was only one response.

"Before today, Little Kite, Vernal, we would mark the Branwen Tribe as allies. That is no longer the case, consider them enemies and shoot on sight."

Cinder flinched, and Raven scowled inwardly, the girl was still far too unaccustomed to the grim reality of their situation, and until they got to Taiyang, it would not be safe for her to emerge openly as the little ones sponsor.

Wait.

By the brothers…

Ozpin.

She'd forgotten about the largest barrier to entry. Cinder had no papers, and neither did Vernal, and she'd be able to fool most people, but that damned wizard wasn't one of them.

Which meant she'd have to entreat with him to keep Cinder and Vernal safe.

The thought rankled at her, she didn't trust Ozpin at all, didn't trust anything about the man, and his background. She knew he was hiding more than he said, let alone what he'd done with the fight against Salem.

She didn't want her kids in that mess, but… there weren't that many other options, were there? The tribe was out, she'd pissed them off something fierce by getting their stashes discovered, even if she arrived now. Which would only have been further exacerbated if she brought 2 mouths to feed along with hers.

Which left Taiyang, Qrow, and herself to care for two more kids.

This… wasn't good, wasn't a good idea, really at all.

So then what should she do next?

Taiyang was the obvious option, but that meant putting herself back under Ozpin's orders for the chance that her kids would have a good life and a chance at as much of a normal life as two huntresses could lead.

Because it wasn't as if Cinder was crowing about opening bakeries and Vernal wanted to design pretty dresses.

That would have been much easier than a life fighting grimm.

Of course the two had chosen the only life liable to make her blood pressure rise.

To say nothing of Yang. Of her firstborn! That girl was growing up to be a fighter, from everything that Summer had said.

Damned kids, taking after their mother. Could almost bring a tear to her eye.

Wait, the White Fang, wouldn't they-

She banishes the thought before it has a chance to finish, not because they wouldn't, Sienna might grumble about it, but Kali and Ghira would accept Cinder and Vernal on principle alone. But the rest of their faction could likely care less about the two girls and could very easily arrange for them to be… disposed of if they proved inconvenient.

No, if Nightingale had been pushed out of the city, and with Tyrian's (if that had been him) objective incomplete, they weren't as successful as Raven had liked, but that was fine, because Cinder and Vernal were ok, and by extension so were the Belladonna's and Sienna.

Now? She just had to cross literally thousands of miles of contested territory and get her kids into the arms of the one man who would potentially be ok with taking them in, but also might just spit in her face and demand she get out.

Which, as she reflected on Summer's last angry rant… was his absolute right as a parent, he'd been furious with her for abandoning Yang, and now… a part of Raven wondered how she'd ever gone through with it in the first place.

Having the contemplate abandoning Cinder like that hurt, hurt so badly that she had to stop and pause for breath, but she'd do it, she would do it and she'd smile through the tears because the alternative was so much worse.

If she had to become the crazy, scary bandit queen to stay free and stay off of Ironwood's radar just long enough to see her kids grow up?

Then fuck, she'd damned well do it.

So, as dawn turned to dusk and then to night, Raven strode free of the camp, and cut open a hole into the air, a portal forming to the one man she'd not wanted involved until things had stabilized, but no longer had a choice in the matter.

"Hello Tai."

Cinder

Cinder had lain in her cot, trying to sleep for what felt like hours until her mother began to move through the camp. She wasn't going on patrol but because Vernal and she weren't on watch, the woman would have to be staying close enough to camp that she could reach their sides in an instant if need be.

The amount of grimm in just the outskirts of the city that they'd cut down was absurd, so vastly higher than anything Cinder had seen before, Vernal and her had handled the minor pack of juvenile beowulves, but they'd had to skulk through the woods dodging the alphas that came after them and desperately hunkering down after a trio of ursae discovered their tracks.

It had been very good luck that Raven had found them when she did.

But now she was elsewhere, and Cinder stole out of the tent, taking her bow, the good one, the one that let her hunt grimm, with her.

She wasn't that stupid.

"No, Tai, please."

The voice is a whisper, deadly quiet, and coming from the still open portal in midair, the one that remains open even now, because Cinder can tell that Raven is scared.

Her mom is scared.

In all of the indignity she's capable of, Cinder bull rushes through that portal, bow raised to the ready position, arrow nocked, and ready to let it fly the moment she locks eyes with whatever's making her mom hurt.

Stupid decision on hindsight, but frankly she can't be assed to care.

Out of the portal Cinder is stepping into a cozy… living… room. There's her mom, standing right next to the portal, Omen drawn, and now staring at Cinder with that expression she's never quite been able to figure out if it's her mom approving or disapproving of her actions.

And standing next to her, is the most stereotypical huntsman Cinder has ever seen. He's tall, blonde and blue eyed, and rippling muscle binds his frame. He looks down at her and he smiles and it's the smile she's seen on all the poster ads for Atlas' military, except this smile is real.

"Hey little one, defending your mom?"

And his voice rumbles out of his chest and Cinder's face feels hot and flushed because really, charging into an unknown situation like that is exactly what would have gotten her killed if this was a lethal encounter.

"Little kite-"

Raven starts, but the man looks to her and cuts her off without a word, Raven doesn't react, except to let her shoulders droop down and a sight make it past her lips.

"Fine. Cinder, wake Vernal, if you can, its about time we had this talk."

She points to the portal.

5 minutes later, Vernal is trying very hard to stare at the floor grain and not at the man, who's name is Taiyang's biceps.

Cinder is staring at her mom, as her mother acts… like an utter fool.

Raven is sitting there, wearing her mask with the eye attachment taken clean out of it to allow people to see her eyes, but Cinder knows damned well she's only wearing the lower half of the mask because she's blushing like a loon.

It doesn't click immediately, until a sleep filled, exhausted voice comes from the stairs above her.

"Daaadd…. Who is itttt? Is mom back yet?"

A blonde girl, about the same height as Cinder, turns the stairs and locks eyes with her, and Cinder smiles the grin of someone who's just discovered blackmail material on their worst enemy.

Raven's looks aren't clear in the girl yet, but they'll be there one day.

She looks to Raven, and catches her mother looking away from her in embarrassment.

Cinder giggles, Vernal snorts as she catches on, and even big Taiyang chuckles just a bit at Raven's discomfort.

The mood is immediately ruined when the weight of the words that the girl says sink in. And Raven looks away from Taiyang's penetrating gaze.

"Yang… can you take this girl and go upstairs to play for a bit?"

Cinder sees the tears in the mans eyes as he speaks, and the way that his tone slightly wavers as the truth sinks in. But she does as is told, and follows the girl upstairs to the small room at the very top.

"I'm Yang, what's your name?"

Cinder searches the other girls gaze, careful to look for any tricks or deceptions, and finds… nothing, instead seeing the other girl's genuine curiosity in a hand outstretched. Sleep still dulls her lilac eyes, and yet inside them Cinder finds no traces of anything resembling deceit, manipulation, or violent intent. Just slightly sleepy curiosity.

"Cinder."

She finally answers, and the other girls eyes open wide.

"Cooolll! Why'd your parents call you that?"

Cinder wants to lie and say she doesn't remember, but she does, the faintest of voices trickling back into her mind, faint words.

"I'm fond of autumn, Cinder, for the colors of the roaring fire I named you after what's left over, just enough to start and spark the next big blaze."

She says as much to Yang, and Yang smiles at her, a slight gap in her front teeth, gently smacking Cinder on the shoulder.

"That's a cool name~!"

Neither of them are prepared for the gasp of shock, or the cry of agony from downstairs in the voice of Taiyang. A cry of agony that is only perpetuated as Raven takes it up as well.

Grief is a terrible thing, remarks Cinder. She had only gotten to know Summer very briefly, and she suffered as much in the early days after the woman died.

She tries to stop Yang from running down the stairs, but does not need to, as the tiny blonde runs face first into Vernal's stupid chest and the older girl stops her cold.

"Sorry little one, can't let you down there, Cinder's mom and your dad have a few things they need to talk about."

Yang looks at Cinder and her eyes flicker to red.

The sudden shift is so jarring, especially as Cinder realizes just how much of Raven is in Yang.

Her mom's eyes also darken in color when she's angry.

Their mom… if Cinder's correct about Yang's parentage.

The first punch catches Cinder completely by surprise.

The second does not, and, with some satisfaction, Cinder remarks that while Yang is naturally talented as a fighter, she has the edge in practical combat.

They kick and scrabble about on the floor, biting and scratching, occasionally landing one hit on each other, but neither of them stops it until the sound of heavy footfalls coming up the stairs announces itself to all of them.

Vernal watches on impassively, as Taiyang and Raven round the corner and stare accusingly at Yang and Cinder.

In perfect unison, both roar out.

"She started it!"

Raven

It is sometimes hard to stare at my daughter after she's gotten into a fight. Harder to stare at my… Well, both of my daughters. Yang bears a split lip and puffy eyes, holding back tears but not wanting to shed them. Cinder is roaringly defiant, and despite a slightly chipped tooth and clear bite marks on her shoulder, she's standing strong, her aura flickering around her, she won't be caught off guard again.

I look at Taiyang, slightly ahead of me on the stairs, and I'm forced to concede that putting Vernal in charge of the two brats was… not a wise decision.

She had been raised as a Branwen, and… that meant her attitudes towards what was acceptable behavior were vastly different from other peoples.

I realize this in one fell swoop and directly suffer from the realization as Taiyang shoots me a thoroughly unimpressed glare.

In the tribe, fighting like this would be encouraged among the brats, with whomever triumphed being rewarded. It is hard to remind myself of the horror of such things, having grown up with them. Earned my scars from such brawls.

Vernal is no exception, and the girl stands at the stair tops, blocking my daughters from charging down, and she positively withers under the slightly disappointed glare that my Tai- No. Not anymore, that Taiyang Xiao-Long, gives her. Because at her heart, Vernal is still just a girl, and Taiyang has an infuriatingly patient, infuriatingly annoying way about him that melts teenage girls into puddles.

I should know, he did it to me and Summer.

It takes… time, to get the girls to bed, to get Vernal to calm down and realize that she's not going to be stabbed. It takes enough time that Taiyang is yawning by the time we're done, and I can't help myself.

"You've really gone soft, haven't you?"

His expression freezes my blood in my veins and my heart in my chest. Neither of us are the type to cry around our daughters, but I can see the tears welling up in his blue eyes as he settles into that creaking old chair that Summer "adopted" from a bandit camp we cleared in our third year. I wonder, absently, if the chips in the wood are still there from the scattered buckshot that Qrow fired at the hideous thing in an attempt to destroy it.

The dining room in Taiyang's house hasn't changed in the years I've been absent, there are many more photographs of Yang and little Ruby now, but far fewer of me. Even less where I smile as easily as I used to.

Things are different, stinging and damaged now, and I don't know how to fix them anymore.

"She… she sacrificed herself. Fighting the contract."

Tai's eyes are hardened, the kind of dull blue that sadness tempers. I remember the last time I saw them like this.

The day I abandoned him and Summer.

The memory hurts like a spear through the ribs, but I force myself to continue, for Summer's memory, little as I deserve it, and for Yang, Cinder, Vernal and Ruby.

"I'm… I'm sorry Taiyang…"

The man looks at me, and I'm there when the dam finally breaks for him, and in the moments later when my own sunders its walls and pours forth endless gallons of sadness onto that table. Still scorched where Summer's first attempt at cookies ruined the cheap, crappy paint.

I lose track of how long it takes for us to calm down, lose track of how long it takes for the tears to stop, for the dulling of consciousness to allow us a semblance of peace. I lose track of when Taiyang carries me to the sofa and places me there, wrapping blankets around me as I sob because even in his own grief and sadness, he has to be the strong man, the emotional rock that both myself and Summer relied upon.

A twist of shame pools in my gut as I lie there, hearing his footsteps pad away and into the master bedroom just above me.

I lie in the darkness, trying to let the tears fall shamelessly, to be vulnerable for the first time in years.

I began this process with Cinder, and I can't finish it here. I can't finish it without more of these people. I swore that I wouldn't be near, because it was too easy for Salem to target and slay us. That I was almost too late once was unforgivable, and Summer would never have forgiven me had I been too late again.

But then I was. And she paid the price for it.

I can barely forgive myself most days, and this only makes it worse.

This… grief. I'm not good at it, I'm not good at losing the people close to me, first it was my mom and dad, in the camp, and then a first love, and then I felt like I had to throw away the people who were closest to me because I couldn't stomach the fact that I'd put targets on their back.

Now I'm left with the shattered pieces of the woman who brought us all together, the memories… the remnants of her life.

If I slow my breath down I can still smell the strawberry scent in the air that she used in all her favorite products, can still feel the tempo of her breath, the patter of her feet running up and down the stairs, and the boundless enthusiasm she brought to my life.

I can feel her presence in this house, and all at once it's stifling and unbearable that she's gone.

It's worse because it's my fault.

I listen to the sounds of the house, the creaking and gentle tossing, the way that Summer Rose built this place with her own hands, the way that Taiyang and I and Qrow retrieved pieces of old furniture, loot from a dozen huntress contracts, and used our knowledge and skills to make this place our home.

A cracked photograph left over from when I swung Yang too energetically and her little shoes knocked it off the wall.

My eyes don't need aura enhancements to see in the dark, not with the magic Ozma gave us. But I don't need to see in the dark to know where these memories are.

There, in the corner of the living room, the carpet is smudged and stained black, it's easy to believe it's fire from the hearth, but it's leftover ink, long dried into the carpet, from when Ruby started learning how to write, got into her father's expensive calligraphy supplies, and ended up with half a bottle of ink all over her and the floor.

There's the step that's slightly creaky because Yang tried to pick up Harbinger and dropped it on the much weaker wood, splintering just a piece of it off.

There's the old table that Qrow carved in a fit of drunken inspiration to look like a modern art gallery mixed with ancient civilizations nude models.

There's the weapons on the fireplace, the ancestral Rose, Xiao-Long, and yes, even mine and my brother's own contributions in the student versions of our weapons.

Dawning Rose had been called Sundered then. Omen had been Reaper. Harbinger had been Timepiece, and Tai's stupid gauntlets had been called Heartbreaker.

Our student pieces take up space up there, and Tai and Summer never took them down, even after I abandoned them.

They didn't want the memories of their teammate to fade.

It chokes me up again, and for the third time that night I am sobbing into the thick, slightly misshapen pillow of Taiyang's couch.

Chapter 22 (Finale of Book 1)
Cinder treaded very carefully around Taiyang Xiao-Long. She didn't really know any other way to do so. Even Raven seemed halfway between awe and terror at the man, for his actions in taking the two of them in. He seemed to simply square his shoulders and march onwards, even as the world bent him.

A week had passed since the day Raven had thrown her, Vernal, and herself into the man's living room, a week in which she'd seen a few changes, some welcome, others much less so.

One of the more welcome changes was that Yang existed in her life. A part of Cinder was astonished to have found such a person in Yang Xiao-Long, and another was eagerly waiting for the "other foot to fall" as Raven had said. But Yang continued to prove that she wasn't as much of an idiot as Cinder had initially taken her for.

That wasn't to say they weren't fighting, though.

"That's cheating!"

Said outburst had poured out of Cinder's lips as the blonde brat had once again sent her sprawling to the floor. Yang may have been disgustingly sunny and optimistic, but Cinder had to admit that she was a talented brawler that took no prisoners.

"Raven said it's not cheating if you win!"

Cinder growled.

"Raven also said I'm not allowed to use my bow!"

Yang grinned.

"Yeah, cos' it's too easy for you to keep me at a distance and your fancy martial arts can't beat me yet!"

Cinder rolled her eyes dramatically, and took the offered hand of Yang with a gentleness that surprised even her.

It was stunning to think she'd ever have gotten along with another girl her age, especially after the hotel, after Madame, and after Clove and Iris.

But… Yang had somehow managed to worm her way into Cinder's heart and had her, begrudgingly admitting that she at the very least was if not welcome, then at least she was tolerated in such a way that Cinder didn't hate her presence.

Wasn't that a funny thought?

"Sooooo we're going again? Or are you chickening out?"

Cinder turned and faced the gap toothed, smiling maw of Yang, and in answer, she slugged her.

This time, she had the upper hand, as Yang's eyes flickered red momentarily.

Raven's eyes were red, darker to be certain. But…

Yang's could be a dead ringer for Raven's… easily.

Now they just had to wait for her to come back from her scouting mission.

Well, and she had to punch that stupid grin off of Yang's face. Even if it took her all day of sparring.

By the time that Taiyang called them in for dinner, Cinder had not, indeed, managed to punch the smug off of Yang's face. Having instead been thoroughly, and soundly beaten for the entire afternoon, she was covered in bruises and furious with that.

Taiyang raised a single eyebrow at her and Yang's disheveled appearances, before saying simply.

"Are you two ok?"

Cinder nodded mutely, and Yang, ever the instigator, merely said.

"She's been trying to knock my smugness off my face for the entire day, but she's getting better all the time!"

Why were Cinder's cheeks heating up at the praise, this didn't-

Oh, Yang had said she was getting stronger, that was it, wasn't it.

Ruby, Yang's younger sister was one of the better things, the little girl smiling widely at her and running up to show her a new drawing, something that both she and Yang were quietly happy to see.

"See! I'm going to be a big and strong huntress and I'll save both of you when you get into trouble!"

Ruby… wasn't taking her mother's death well.

The girl was convinced she wasn't gone, and Cinder and Yang hadn't bothered to try that hard to convince her she was gone. They'd… be there for her when she cried and when she broke down, and they'd try their absolute hardest to make sure she didn't cry that much.

Of course this was where the first of the problems came in.

Vernal wasn't taking any of this well.

It didn't help that the girl was a melted puddle and utterly useless whenever she was around Taiyang, but the man wouldn't let her get away with any of the things the Branwen tribe raised her to do.

That being swear, drink, smoke or do any of the things that Vernal actually wanted to do. Although fighting was on the table.

Said girl had been incorrigible for that week, but… Taiyang had told them all that there was news this evening, and so the girl stomped her way in, looking filthy and pissed, but calmer, slightly, than she had been.

Personally Cinder didn't think her drinking was a good idea, but she'd never dream of telling Vernal that to her face, the last time Yang had done it, it had ended in a three way brawl that had made Taiyang break them up. In that case by quite literally picking up Cinder and Yang in one giant hand each, and firmly stating "no" to a flustered and very embarrassed Vernal.

All of them had agreed to never speak of the incident in front of Ruby, who'd likely end up drawing something that would make them all look even more ridiculous than they felt.

It would ruin Cinder's perception as the cool and elegant older sister, it would ruin Yang's "unbeaten" older sister title, and it would make Ruby even more wary around Vernal, and that wasn't something that either Yang or Cinder wanted.

Yang wanted everyone to be friends, and Cinder could see the way that Ruby's shying away hurt Vernal, even though the older girl put on a tough face.

"Girls, wash up."

A chorus of "Yes Taiyang/Yes Dad" rang out, and a procession of slightly sullen vernal, calm Cinder, excited Yang and Ruby sat down at a table Cinder had seen Raven stare at, but never sit at.

"Raven's called and left a message for all of you, her mission is taking longer than expected."

Taiyang's voice rumbled as he spoke, and Cinder searched his expression for a trace of a lie.

When she found one, she would have liked to say she was surprised, but she wasn't, really.

"She's… not coming back, is she?"

Yang, frustrated, spoke first. And Cinder bit back a retort as Vernal cut in.

"Boss lady says she's busy, she's busy, no sense in pushing against her. It won't make her come back."

Taiyang shook his head, before he placed his scroll on the table and pressed a button.

"Hello girls, I'm afraid this mission is running longer than expected, and I'm not going to be back when I said I was. But I wanted to call to tell you all that Taiyang and I have been speaking about the future…"

Cinder frowned. That sounded like Raven was coaching her words, and that wasn't a fun idea.

"We'd like Vernal to attend a huntsman Academy this fall, and Yang and Cinder to start at Signal next year. Provided Cinder's scores in school are up to the task."

Feeling like a heavy stone had sunk into her stomach, Cinder looked across the table to see Vernal's reaction, and the girl was frowning at them all.

"Whaddaya mean an Acade-?"

She froze, halfway with a fork to her mouth.

Her face began to get red, and Cinder calmly pulled her plate towards her, nodding to Yang.

Vernal may not have had many buttons to press, but separating her from Cinder or Raven for an extended period of time, was one.

"THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN?"

There it was.

Cinder stood up and marched out of the dining hall, with Yang and her towing Ruby by the arms as each one held their plates up.

The living room wouldn't be isolated enough, but… there were picnic tables outside. That should be fine, right?

The trio of girls walked into the calm evening air and took their places, and a moment later a grey blur manifested into Vernal, running out the door, only to be intercepted by a massive arm, and firmly tugged back inside.

"Vernal- just calm dow-"
"FUCK YOU, YOU BAST-"

Cinder froze, Yang froze, Ruby froze, even Taiyang looked befuddled for a moment.

You could hear leaves hit the ground as Vernal seemed to shyly move her feet back and forth. Before the man simply let out a long aggrieved sigh.

"Vernal, what have we said about language?"

The girl muttered something, and Cinder focused her senses to try and pick it up.

"That it makes me sound uncivilized…"

"Mhm."

"And that I shouldn' do it…"

"Yes and?"

"And that I'm sorry Mister Taiyang."

"Good, now, let's go back inside, and speak about this like the near adult you are and the adult I actually am."

The door shut, and Cinder, unable to hold it in anymore, fell off the wooden bench laughing, Yang following alongside her.

"What's so funny?"

Ruby's wide silver eyes asked, the girl having a slight smear of mashed potato on one cheek as she looked at her older sister and Cinder.

"We'll- haha- tell you when you're older."

Yang barely choked out, before peals of laughter consumed her again.

Cinder was not used to time passing in the blink of an eye, and yet, that was exactly what occurred. Days spent in sleepy summer light, and warm heat, days spent having… actual fun with Yang and Ruby, days spent running into the woods and seeing the effects of Taiyang's grimm hunts, and even the rare few days they got Vernal involved when she was allowed to be free of Taiyang's merciless, clear, and persistent studying routines.

But it still was a strange, strange feeling. To have this sense of weight lifted off of her chest, to be allowed to, outside of training and fighting just live.

The days were growing shorter already, and Cinder remarked that she missed the sensation of the longest, sleepiest of summer days, the days where she and Yang and Ruby lay on the soft grass and watched the sky rumble past them with it's patchwork quilt of clouds.

As for her mother, Raven, she'd been on a mission the entire summer, she'd visited once, apparently to drop off essentials and lien for Taiyang, but… then she'd moved out, another mission, always far away, and always, always, Taiyang would look at her with that infuriatingly forced smile and sadness blurring his eyes. Cinder noted that the bags of trash she helped carry somehow… clinked more, now.

Cinder hated it, she hated being lied to, hated being hurt, and she hated the way that Yang looked at her with something akin to jealousy, and rage whenever Raven was brought up.

It boiled over until Yang popped the question, a few weeks into the last month of summer.

"Why you?"

Cinder, lazily reclining in a plush chair that overlooked the front of the Xiao-Long/Rose house, looked up from her book at Yang, who was sitting at the patio table.

"Huh?"

"Why did she go through so much to save you-?"

Cinder shrugged.

"Summer."

Yang flinched, the bluntness of Cinder's answer catching her a little off guard.

"Summer wanted to save me… Raven… just took me with her after I ran into them on the mission."

Yang leaned in closer.

"The mission?"

"Wait- did- did Taiyang not tell you?"

Cinder stuttered slightly, disbelief coloring her view.

"He said mom and Raven were out doing normal stuff…"

Cinder shook her head.

"They were after someone… a bad guy. He called himself Tyrian…"

Yang shrugged, and Cinder didn't continue.

"I'd… rather not talk about it, y'know?"

Yang leaned forwards and stated.

"I don't really feel like asking more, but… why didn't she come back? Why isn't she here?"

Cinder bit her lip and worried at it, biting harshly before continuing to speak.

"I-"

Her mind flashed back, flashed to the way that Summer had mocked Raven gently, before she shrugged and said.

"I don't know-"

Yang continued, cutting her off.

"Why you- why couldn't she just- be here…"

Cinder let her continue, as Yang's eyes started to fill and crinkle, and the girl choked back a sob.

"S'not fair… why did she go after you- why are you more 'mportant…"

Cinder froze. She was terrible with people who were crying, but she wanted it to stop, wanted Yang to know… what, that Raven wasn't dysfunctional?

That she wasn't kind of a mess who'd never really gotten over Summer's death?

"I'm… not…"

Her voice surprises her, the shaking in it and the hesitation not aiding her. Yang casts her gaze up and looks at Cinder, her cheeks red and eyes puffy.

"I- she only- Summer-"

Cinder's breath is coming in shorter gasps now, the memories, the stench of blood and rot, of sickness and pain, the maniacal laughter of Tyrian as he stalked them through tundra and town alike, always them just a few steps ahead.

She remembered the bandages soaked in puss and wounds, the blood, the scent of iron and medicine, the way she'd been so terrified of Sienna, and of Adam. The way the Fang in the camp had looked at her. Why they had looked at her that way.

The events of the past half a year crashing down on her shoulders, the sound of Tyrian's laughter never that far behind her, never far behind Raven-

"She must be protecting us."

That was the only answer that made sense, the only reason she'd fly so far away for so long.

"What do you mean?"

Yang's eyes, still filled with tears, Cinder's own sympathetically responding and prickling.

"Tyrian… he tracked us from Mantle to the shores of Solitas, then from there to Argus… he wasn't even there for me but he still found us."

Yang sniffled, Cinder sniffled, and the two of them looked at each other.

"Raven must be protecting us, must be keeping us safe by not going near us while he's out there."

Yang frowned.

"Ugh… I hate this."

Cinder nodded and turned back to her book. Before Yang spoke up again.

"Wanna spar before dad gets back?"

Cinder's book snapped shut with an audible "clack" as she stood back up and turned to face Yang, already up and on her feet.

"Best two out of three?"

The fiery blonde girl ran a finger across her nose and then threw a wild punch at Cinder.

Cinder, recoiling from the blow, jumped her.

They broke apart, their rough brawl turning more structured as Yang assumed a stance she'd been learning from Tai and Cinder settled into one that she remembered Vernal and Raven using.

"Yaaaaaang, Cindyyyyy"

Both of them flinched as a red blur rocketed into view. Ruby Rose stood up, took one look at both of them, and then put her hands on her hips and said.

"You said you'd stop fighting!"

Cinder looked down slightly at the tiny girl with her massive cloak.

"We're sparring, it's different."

Yang took her side, nodding and replying in kind.

"Just practicing, Rubes, that's it!"

Ruby fixed Cinder and Yang with a glare that was all Summer in every single way that mattered.

"Then I want in."

Yang and Cinder exchanged a glance. Ruby had made noises about wanting to be a huntress strongly as she'd begun to comprehend the truth behind Summer's death. There had been a lot of crying those days, and Raven had even shown up to tell her about how much of a hero Summer was.

But Raven still sucked with kids, and Cinder and Yang found themselves, alongside Taiyang, often being the pair to reassure and help out when the youngest of their household started sobbing or having nightmares.

It helped that Cinder felt a kinship with the sisters. She had no real contemplation of just how much they'd lost, but she'd seen Summer's death, and she felt that loss too, just… in worse ways.

In some ways she found herself enjoying Yang's boisterous company or Ruby's quiet adoration of the stories she told. Because Ruby truly seemed to think that Cinder's burgeoning library was the coolest thing ever.

What she did not agree with Ruby on, was the way the little girl was a total gun nut and wanted Cinder to be one too.

Cinder didn't like guns, she'd use them if necessary, but she'd loved learning to shoot a bow with Raven, and it felt like betraying her mom's intentions to pick one up and start using it as easily as the sisters did. But she didn't begrudge the young girl that much… and Ruby had extracted a promise from Cinder that when the time came to get her real swords that she'd be the one to fully tune them up.

Yang held no such apprehension, and eagerly, excitedly talked to Ruby about the design for a pair of what Cinder could tell would be something involving shotguns, lots of punching, and a great deal of explosions.

Cinder didn't get the appeal, but she could appreciate that Yang and Ruby were happy. Even if she didn't… quite feel those emotions as strongly as she felt she probably should have.

Those emotions were strange to Cinder, Iris and Clove had drilled most of her easy reactions out, and the somewhat dull pulses of a faint warmth within her were, far and above not exactly easy. Cinder wondered why it was easier with Vernal and Raven, why she felt closer to them.

Was it because they were as damaged as she was?

Cinder frowned to herself as she watched the Xiao-Long and Rose sisters move towards the house, the spar being forgotten as Yang animatedly spoke to Ruby about the weapon she'd thought up in her mind.

Cinder looked back up at the tree and her book, shrugged, and climbed back up there a moment later.

The two sisters weren't unwelcoming, they were sweet and kind and she liked Yang more and more, even if she could get annoyed over the blonde's rather intense attitude and personality.

But… Cinder found her thoughts often returning to Vernal and Raven, and how she missed both of them terribly. A clawing, lonely feeling in her chest that ate at her because for all of the wonderfulness of the Rose/Xiao-Long family… they weren't Raven or Vernal, she hadn't fought side by side against monsters with them. She hadn't bled for them, and they hadn't for her… so were they really family?

Cinder opened her book, but her thoughts wandered far away from the tale of the Girl in the Tower. She wondered if Yang and Ruby had ever bled for each other, if they ever would. She'd seen siblings in storybooks, but these two were just so… real, that it made her feel strange.

"Hey Kiddo"

She cast her eyes down from the tree at the older, masculine voice, and her eyes met the muscled form of Taiyang Xiao-Long, shading his eyes from the sun with one hand.

"Taiyang."

The man gestured at her, and Cinder obliged, climbing down from the tree with her book under one arm.

"You're not in the garage with Yang and Rubes, so I thought I'd come out looking for you to make sure no grimm caught you."

He squatted down to her level, something that definitely didn't frustrate her at all, no way, no how, that would be silly.

"None of the grimm on this island could hurt me before I turned them to ash."

She tried to ignore how Taiyang Xiao-Long winced when she said that, or how he muttered something under his breath she didn't quite catch, before he reached out and ruffled her head.

She was not blushing.

She wasn't!

"You've… been really quiet, don't get me wrong, Rae told me you tend to be more of an observer in strange environments, but I'll confess I'm a bit worried about you. Yang and you spar constantly, and you're beginning to take Ruby into it as well. Do you have other hobbies besides fighting?"

His question was bluntly phrased and yet gently shrouded in words designed to not provoke her sense of threat.

Cinder raised an eyebrow. He was good, very good, but she was tutored by Raven! She was immune!

She was not immune.

"I like books, and fashion."

The blonde man nodded, before he spoke once more.

"Would you like it if we got you a sewing kit and something akin to that for clothing?"

Cinder froze.

There was no other explanation, Raven was a good mother for keeping her alive, yes, but Raven and Cinder were focused on survival. Entertainment was always what small paperback books could be carried in their light bags for long term travel. She'd never asked Cinder for what she wanted, so… what did Cinder want?

Was it ok for her to even have wants? She liked the fashion of some of the things she'd seen on the streets of Mistral and Atlas, the tight pants and flowing coats… and the cool dresses, the ones that even Raven thought were badass, all sleek silk and flowing lines. The ones that Raven would die before admitting, but the ones she had stolen at least a couple of from people who didn't deserve them.

If… Raven could have things she wanted, and Vernal could have things she wanted… would it be ok for her to ask the same?

Cinder made up her mind, and nodded gently, shakily, her nervousness freezing the nod into a half present jerking motion that only made the blush on her face worse.

Taiyang smiled at her, and simply stated.

"I'll ask Qrow to find one in Vale, we should have it before the end of the week, would you like some books on how to sew as well?"

Another half nod, and Brothers wasn't Cinder, just ready to die of sheer embarrassment. She felt like she had when Sienna had told her that she would help her if she needed it. All surrounded by sudden warm emotion-things that she couldn't handle.

Cinder was suddenly struck with a horrifying thought. Taiyang Xiao-Long was not just a "friend" of Raven's… he was her husband, former, but… if he could turn her into a stupid emotion filled mess.

Who was to say he couldn't do that to Raven again?

The thought was so terrifying that she froze up and Taiyang clearly noticed, because he started speaking again.

"It's okay, kiddo, no one's gonna deny you stuff anymore just cause we could. This is just because you seemed a bit lonely out here all the time when you're not just sparring with Yang. You can't exactly hunt grimm out here anyways, so… I thought I'd see if you wanted to do anything with your time between studying and all the training."

Cinder finally found her words.

"I would like that, Taiyang."

The man smiled at her, and didn't that just send a flood of strange warmth through her entire body.

Why did that feel nice? Why did she want more of it?

Hmph. Taiyang Xiao-Long was dangerous. That, Cinder was certain of, was this what Vernal felt whenever he said things to her? Because now she understood, and felt a sudden moment of solidarity with the girl who was likely even now raising utter hell with Qrow Branwen.

Served him right, the traitorous bastard. Who abandoned their family like that? Especially because she didn't even have a good reason for it!

It just didn't make sense, what was so good about the crusty old bastard Ozpin, anyways? Raven hated the man, and made no secret about it, and Tai wasn't exactly on good terms with him, either.

So why were they in Vale, then!?

Eugh, she hated adults, stupid idiot adults, they should have just stayed in Mistral, with Argus' news talking about how the heroic actions of a number of Ace-ops and civilian vigilantes had saved the city from a group of terrorists.

The reports never mentioned who the terrorists were, and there was no mention of the White Fang.

Cinder hated that, and she had written angry letters both to Amber and Sienna about that.

Sienna's reply, which she'd received shortly, was not particularly helpful. With Sienna simply stating they were used to it, and mourned their people in their own way.

Amber hadn't replied immediately, but when she'd voiced that to Raven, here for a brief visit before setting off again, the older woman had gotten a strange look on her face and said she'd see if she could make contact and deliver another copy of Cinder's letter in person.

That had been a month and a half ago.

Now she was biting at the bit, and unhappy that there hadn't been an update, or even a visit by Raven.

"C'mon kiddo, let's go get some dinner and see what Ruby and Yang have forged in the garage."

She'd not realized Tai was still there, squatted in front of her and waiting for her.

She tried not to blush brilliantly, before she followed dutifully behind him as he moved towards the house.

Vernal could never know about this, ever.

If she told anyone she'd lose all credibility she ever had, and she could not, would not allow that to happen.

Cinder Fall, blushing in front of a stupid idiot adult because he made her chest feel all mushy?

Disgusting.

She hated it.

She liked it a little.

But she did follow behind Taiyang as he entered the house, as they passed into the kitchen and into the garage, where a cackling laugh from Ruby announced that she'd finished… something.

The sound of a cocking shotgun, and then the ignition, accompanied by a flying blonde meteor, crashed into Taiyang at speed.

"DAD!LOOKWHATMEANDRUBYMADEIT'SSOCOOLCANWEMAKEMEAFULLSIZEDONE?"

Cinder hovered by the door, waiting as Tai slowly disconnected his daughter from his midsection enough to get at what she was wearing.

Yang had a large, silver gauntlet on her hand, crudely atop it, was the form of a shotgun barrel. The thing looked incredibly dangerous, and had so many moving parts that a part of Cinder felt that it would fall apart at any moment, but for all of that worry, as Yang yanked her hand backwards, the thing actually chambered another round as Taiyang smiled at the two of them.

"Let's wash up, clean up the garage and forge, and then get something to eat, ok?"

Yang, with Ruby not seconds behind her, began to rush about, with Yang slowly getting out of her sister's way as the little girl moved faster and faster until she was a near blur.

"Is that her semblance?"

Tai and Yang shook their heads.

"Nope. Mom and Dad believed we should have our aura's unlocked as soon as we could bear the strain of training to control them, and Ruby's always been really fast by nature."

"So she's just… doing that?"

Which meant the earlier blur hadn't been Ruby's semblance, just her pure, aura augmented speed.

Cinder licked her lips, she had to learn how to do that.

"Can… she teach that?"

Yang frowned, and Taiyang shook his head before replying.

"No, I'm afraid that might not be the wisest decision, Ruby is fast, but she's fast by sheer talent and the unique ways her aura has entered into her body and reinforced it. She's just… naturally talented at being fast, and somehow her body can handle the strain. Yang's tougher than most are, and I know she gets that from me, perhaps we'll figure out what your specialty is soon enough, hmm?"

Cinder paused, before she asked.

"Specialties?"

Tai frowned, shaking his head slightly.

"Something to be discussed tomorrow, or the next time Raven's in town, she might have a better idea of what yours is. I know I can't stop you from experimenting, but if you push aura into anything and it starts hurting… I want you to stop doing that immediately, ok?"

Cinder nods before she can stop herself, and feels that same stupid mushy warmth in her stomach as it jumps for joy.

He cares for her.

The realization is sudden, and she finds her eyes welling up slightly with tears, which she hastily wipes away.

"Is everything alright, Cinder?"

Yang and Tai are looking at her, and she sniffles slightly and nods.

"M'fine."

Neither of them believe her, but for a moment she thinks she's gotten away with it.

She is misinformed, as that moment ends with Yang wrapping her arms tight to Cinder and pulling her into a hug against the larger girl.

When had Yang gotten taller than her? This wasn't fair!?

"It's ok… I promise to be the best sister I can, ok? You're family now, Cinder, Ruby likes you too much to ever let you go, after all!"

Cinder wants to scream at them, but she finds the words dying on her lips as that mushy feeling and flip flopping stomach sensation fill her up until she's just letting Yang hug her, all thoughts of resistance gone.

She hates this, but she likes this, is this what having a family is supposed to be like?
Vernal liked her, yes… but family? Maybe? She'd bled for Raven… Raven wasn't touchy like this, why did it feel so… different?

"Alright, lets get going, Yang… let her go please."

Taiyang, smiling at her, and she wants to crawl away from them. This feeling isn't what she expected when Yang decided that touchy feely stuff was ok!

"Not yet! She's gotta know we won't abandon her or leave her, she's ours now, Dad!"

It's too much, too fast, and Cinder feels herself slightly faint, before Taiyang bodily pulls the two of them apart.

"Yang… please."

Yang stomps into the house in a huff, followed by a nervous looking Ruby, as Tai smiles at Cinder and says.

"She gets… affectionate, and overly so sometimes, I'm sorry she made you uncomfortable."

Was Taiyang's semblance mind reading? That was bullshit how he read her so fast.

How the fuck did he know!?

"She'll get better, promise, but for now… Pizza?"

Cinder decided in that moment, mind reading bullshit aside, Taiyang wasn't so bad.

She would come to regret that statement, in the months later.

Raven

I find him easier than I expected to. For being my miscreant brother and wanted by the entire tribe, Qrow is easily found in a crappy watering hole near the edge of Vale. Why he's here is an interesting question, but I assume it's partially my fault. While Ozma would not challenge me directly by sending my brother onto patch, this is a method of allowing him to keep tabs on us even after all this time.

I approach him, to the chagrin of the woman behind the bar, who shoots me a look as if to say I could do vastly better, which of course, she's correct. But I didn't quite anticipate Hei "Junior" Xiong to be missing at this time.

"What do you want?"

I attempt to keep the bile out of my voice as I speak, but some of my venom escapes.

"Can't a sister visit her brother?"

The man snorts at me, before answering.

"Sure, but you're not my sister, haven't been, since our bastard chief threw me out of the camp with you at his side."

I bite the urge to snap at him.

"That makes two of us now."

Qrow finally looks up from where he's been pretending to nurse his drink, his eyes are slightly unfocused, but that's not exactly atypical for him.

"Seriously, Rae? Who the fuck did you piss off?"

I roll my eyes at him.

"Shit happened. Not here, the usual spot."

He raises an eyebrow at me, but it's not one of his mocking ones, it's genuine concern, he takes in my appearance, the dark bags under my eyes and the new scars, the stiffness with which I hold myself.

"I'm fine."

I do not mention the wounds, because the prick has the audacity to express worry in a public setting, especially one like this one.

"Fine."

But he nods, and I stand up and turn to leave Juniors bar, a different me would have offered the woman behind that bar a wink and a sashay, but I am not that woman anymore.

I have too much to do, and too little time to do it.

Official adoption papers are not sourceable, at least, not this quickly, but if I have to deal with someone, it might as well be this man.

The streets are calm, I know that the girls sleep safe and sound on Patch, I know Taiyang will watch over them until I take up vigil on the roof. I know I have 4 hours until I need to be flying back to the island to take up positions near to it. I know that in that time deals will have to be cut, and information and favors traded to get what I came here for.

Roman Torchwick is not a figure I thought I would ever see in any capacity beyond the bounties passed out by the Spiders.

But he's here in Vale, and I'll need to see about retrieving papers from him.

However, he is not my first choice, and it is because of this reason that I am knocking on the door to a seedy bar in the darker parts of town.

The snarl from behind the door has me raise an eyebrow. That is a wolf, and I know Marka, she is not the type for such canines. I am somewhat surprised to find a tall faunus, raven wings strapped down on her back, opening the door, and handling a massive, snapping ball of teeth and fur with one hand.

She studies me for a moment, and I meet her gaze, before I am waved through and into the foyer.

Seated upon a throne, with a near nude woman in front of her, is Marka "Fast Hands". Rogue huntress and the one who runs most of the identity trade in Vale. She is a disgusting woman, all hard angles and sadistic, pure enjoyment of the worst parts of the flesh and drug trade, and she runs a disgusting ship. It's funny how I would have freely associated with her not even a year ago. Now I can feel my skin crawl as she stares at me.

She is not who I would prefer to work with. But my options are limited, and I will try all of them first, before I confront the beast in his lair as my last option.

"Branwen. Whatever does the disgraced queen have for me?"

"I need to commission you. Papers and identities, for 2 girls."

The woman cooly meets my gaze and smirks.

"Why shouldn't I have Prussia take you down here and sell you back to your tribe? Do you have any idea how angry they are at you?"

I meet her gaze. Marka is a bully and a bastard, but she should know better than to challenge me, or does she think herself capable with this new bodyguard.

"I'm not blind, and I know what I did."

Marka rolls her eyes at me.

"Then you should know the price is up. I want pictures of you, for a catalogue, and say… half a million Lien, that should cover it."

I resist the urge to kill her where she sits for even suggesting it, but I'm not fast enough to stop my hand twitching towards my blade.

I feel the sudden shift in the tension in the room, as a young, multicolored in shades of brown and cream girl appears at Marka's side.

"Mom~! You didn't say we were having guests~!"

The woman does not acknowledge the younger girl for a moment, and her act does not fool me. Cacao may look innocent and childish, but the woman is a huntress of equal skill to her mother, and she is completely insane. She is watching me with the casual, careful glances of a cold, hardened killer. The same eyes I saw in Nightingale and some of the worst of her forces when I fought against them with team STRQ.

"Cacao, act your age."

The woman steps off of her mother's lap and springs up into a low fighting stance.

"Finnnnnnnneeeee, but you're boring and I'll have you know that even Prussia knows how to sing when I ask her too!"

A conspicuous lack of response is clear, I may have an ally here if I need to call upon one.

"No deal."

I don't turn my back on her, but I do step backwards, as Marka calls out.

"Oh hear me out Rae~ You need those papers, and this is the cheapest you'll get them for, promiseeee~!"

Her tone is sing song, and again, perhaps a year ago, I would have considered it. But there are some things that are just worth swallowing the damned bullet for.

Summer trusted Ozma, right?

Didn't that have to be worth something?

So I turn to leave, but as I do, I catch sight of the girl who let me in, her wings strapped to her back, and I find myself reminded so much of the look in Cinder's eyes in that hotel lobby. The spark dying out, and I find I cannot stop myself from speaking.

"You should leave, before she destroys you."

The other girl freezes, and I feel her wolves, two of them, begin to see me with new light.

Marka's tone darkens furiously as she demands.

"What did you just say?"

I feel Cocoa reaching for her blade, see it in the currents of air blown through this dingy, awful bar, see the others of Marka's group preparing to reach for their own weapons.

I should run away from this, I should leave my kids behind again, and flee from Salem in the hopes she'll forget about my involvement and the fact that I am the spring maiden.

I should hope to the Brothers that she leaves me till last as she chases Ozma's servants across the planet in this stupid, awful war of theirs.

I no longer have those hopes. Because I am a coward, and I know that she'll never stop chasing me now that she knows. I can go to ground and wait, and she will attempt to force me out, but if I play cards carefully here, she could be delayed, perhaps not found out.

I should kill this winged faunus alongside Cacao, Marka, and the rest of their gang. She may not be at that level yet.

"Cacao, Prussia, kill her."

I feel the former move, and the latter retreat, and in that moment, choices have been made, the faunus retreating away from me, her wolves falling utterly silent as they flank their mistress.

I nod, and close my eyes, whispering.

"Goodbye, Marka."

When I open them again, they blaze with brilliant red flames, and I am moving.

James Ironwood

"I- how did this happen…"

He stands over the coffins, armored in white, the sigil of Atlas embossed uncaringly onto the smooth wood. His emotions are no longer masked as he looks over the room. His actions caused this, his allowance of Mettle to fly off the leash caused this.

Caroline stands at his side, ever faithful, and Winter Schnee watches the room from the exterior.

"We-"

Ironwood does not wish to cut her off, he does not wish to diminish her achievement, or to harm her when he demands answers.

He does so anyways.

"We failed. Cordovin. We failed and it cost hundreds of innocents their lives, alongside members of Argus' finest. We were fighting against something that subverted us at every turn, all in a desire to grab a single child from her caretaker."

Cordovin sputtered indignantly.

"Sir you can't- surely you don't mean-"

He did not let her finish.

"I was wrong. We were chasing someone who does not deserve to be chased, when we should have focused on the real threat."

Cordovin's face falls.

"We were so caught up with the possibilities of that girl that we never treated our enemies like they were enemies and it cost us dearly."

"Sir we had no idea-"

He lets her finish as she cuts herself off.

"We had no idea Nightingale was alive, or in the city, we didn't know what she was planning, and it was a miracle we stopped her in time."

Ironwood pauses, his hands tapping at the coffin.

"We must do better."

Cordovin freezes, but nods a moment later.

"I want a full audit on our systems, and on how Raven Branwen eluded us again. I am unconvinced that devoting further resources to the task of pursuing her at this point is warranted, with reconstruction efforts ongoing and the White Fang seeming to be rapidly transitioning towards an arming movement."

Cordovin begins writing things down, and he continues.

"This was a battle that went deeply poorly, but our enemies have given us a chance to rebuild and invigorate this city better than we ever could have priorly. Lets see to it that it gets done."

He turns, metal hand tapping a comforting, steady rhythm on his leg.

"Cordovin, get me an appointment with Sol as soon as you can, and then make the council of Atlas find time. If they can bicker with each other, they have time to listen and help me plan how to respond to this emerging threat."

The shorter woman scrambled to keep up with him, before barking out.

"When, sir?"

Ironwood turned his steel gaze towards the sky, towards the distant location of Vale.

"In a weeks time."

The moment he was through the door, he was speaking again.

"Winter, charter us one of the new fast frigates, and get it on a course to Beacon Academy, as soon as possible."

The fresh graduate eagerly snapped into a salute, before she bolted for the communications relays.

"We will win this war against Nightingale and her incumbents, if she wants to get violent, so will we. The mass murderer she worked with, Callows, any further information on him?"

Ironwood subconsciously winces as he recalls the psychopath, and the two huntresses from Vale who had arrived months ago to kill him.

He also recalls the sudden appearance of Ozpin, and the choice to have the man airlifted to the rubble as soon as possible.

He had never seen Ozpin cry before, and he still feels shivers as he remembers the way the man sobbed brokenly at the masonry and dust that surrounded them.

"None, sir, both have gone to ground."

Ironwood resists the urge to snarl.

"Find him. Find his singing cultist leader too, and put a bullet in both of them the moment you do."

Cordovin snaps into a salute, an eager, confident smile playing out across her face.

"Yes, sir!"

Then, she's marching down the corridor and James is left alone with his thoughts and the monstrous gun at his hip.

The experiments had been monumentally successful, and his weapons were proof of that, but getting access to more people with that unique genotype had been nigh impossible. There just weren't any in Atlas, it seemed.

Then why did Vale have so many? Alongside Menagerie.

As he turned towards the airdocks, Ironwood frowned and whispered to himself.

"Three Days, Ozpin. I hope you have your answers for me."

Ozma

His fingers press against the glass, and Ozpin stares into the face inside, at the woman who should be dead and yet lives. At the slumbering, comatose form of a powerful huntress, who lies in situ, unable to wake from the equally powerful drugs coursing through her system.

His second is not allowed down here, only Oobleck and he know of the laboratories that run deep under Beacon, and only they are aware of this room, even if Ozpin is the only one who knows who resides within it.

"You foolish, foolish girl."

The old man chides her memory, a wistful, pained smile on his face. She cannot, bound as she is, if she heals, she will try to kill Ozpin, but if he's lucky he'll never endure that. If he's lucky she'll never wake up, nor feel it when they have to pull the plug on her.

His thoughts turn to silver eyes and talent… and daughters…

He has been watching Ruby Rose and Yang Xiao-Long, and he knows they will grow beyond any of the others, they will exceed STRQ.

Salem has been pushed back, without his direct interference, for reasons he is not sure of, for actions he is unable to pinpoint or seek out.

He knows the Rogue, Raven Branwen has a hand in these actions, and he knows he is frustratingly behind the curve.

He remembers the promise he made to Summer, Raven, and Taiyang, alongside Qrow.

"Your children will not be a part of this war, not while I breathe."

He remembers how it felt to know he was lying through his teeth as he said it.

Salem will not stop until she is allowed to die and take him with her. He knows that she is gone, that her insanity has breached into suicidality so direct and painful that she must die as soon as she is able.

He had hoped to have a few more years of preparation.

He does not.

He had hoped to have a few more talented hunters he could rely upon, like Qrow.

He does not.

He knows that Salem's game, her insanity is pushing hard at her fragile, broken mind. Her barely present courtesy, the things she does in their mismatched game of horrible chess, played across the centuries.

He knows that she craves the maidens not because they are simply keys, but because just as they reminded him of their long dead children, they do the same for her.

He knows that the more each Maiden grows distinct from the powers that formed her, the worse that power takes its toll upon her.

Amber is fading, and it is only a matter of time until she's gone, her personality blended into the others, a construct of people who fight against him, because they're just as broken as he had hoped to avoid when he gave them a voice to speak beyond death.

His hands tremble against the glass of the tube, at the woman wrapped in what amounts to a burial shroud, he reflects upon how happy he had once been to see Salem, how he'd wrapped himself in her arms and how they had ruled a kingdom powerful and ancient.

He knows too much about her goals, he smiles sadly at Summer, whispering.

"I am sorry, dear girl… you should never have been placed into that position, and never should have had to deal with the monsters in the dark. But you came far, far too close to things I cannot allow anyone to know."

He does not know why he confesses to this woman as though she is a confessor, and he the confessee, he does not know why he grieves her as though she is his daughter, he does not know why he wishes that he did not have to take the steps he does. He wishes he could allow her to die and be done with it.

But her silver eyes and innate talent, he cannot lose that. Before Amber is truly gone… he will call her back, and he will make certain she passes her powers to this girl, he will ensure that those powers mix, and he then will have his answer.

No one can be trusted to fight Salem on equal footing, he knows this. The allies he has in this life are useful, but as pawns, pieces to buy off Salem's ire, to drag out their war just a little longer, until he has enough power to directly challenge a god's curse.

He must see her smile again, even if it is in death. He will maintain their detente, he will stop her from enacting these plans, but he'll do that himself.

If Ironwood's pet project can help him with that, he'll ensure she gets here to aid him, costs be damned.

Ironwood is on his way to his school, to demand answers that Ozpin won't give him, because it will shatter the fragile man that is James, and with the skirmish in Argus so recent, Ozpin cannot have his fragile human allies shatter like that.

He pushes his glasses back up on his nose, and steps back from the tube.

"I am sorry, my child. For what I will do to you in search of those powers."

If the silver eyes had hurt Salem, and they could… then he would do anything he could to find out how.

Summer Rose slumbers on within her tube, ignorant to the changes of the world around her or the sacrifice she will make to save this planet.

He is certain she would make the same decision he has, were she awake.
