Datafile - UK
It'd not do very well for a runner to not know their own country, so presenting for you: The UK Data Slate. There's a TL;DR at the end don't worry.
## The United Kingdom
**Population**: 59.3 Million
**Spoken Language**: English, Gaelic Primarily
**Governing Body**: Constitutional Monarchy
Nowadays the UK is composed of Britain, Wales and Scotland. Ireland has become the Elven Nation of Tir na Nog some time ago.
## A History Lesson
Our history of the Sixth World starts in 2004, where a series of reactor meltdowns (Some Major, Some Minor), leads to pockets of irradiation. The foremost of these incidents is the Dungeness Reactor Meltdown around Kent.
Then comes the big sticking point of the early 21st century, VITAS. Frag, did it ever hit hard in the UK. 26% of the population died, and it lasted well into the winter. Just over 1 in 4 people.
Then the universe kicked the country square in the nads. 2011 is known as the Year of Chaos. Another Two major meltdowns in both Dounreay in Scotland and the Sizewell B reactor site in Suffolk, creating two more zones of mass irradiation. Then, floods start to hit the South, destroying much of the property there. Toxic Landfill starts expressing itself throughout the land. Thousands displaced before we even start experiencing UGE or the awakening.
Speaking of Awakening, this year marks the arrival of the first Spike Babies (Elves and Dwarves back when we didn't get what was going on) By the end of the year they'll find out that about 31% of the children born there were elven or dwarven .In Ireland (Now Tir na Nog), we have the one first recorded instances of magical violence for the area.
Then comes the real freaky drek. We have the phenomena of Geographical Resurgence or as the Local Populace like to call it "Oh frag me running, a giant stone just burst out the ground". The forests and wild places of the UK start growing much quicker that they would usually, reclaiming places around them. We also gained a new island, when in the largest recorded case of Geographical Resurgence (GR), an entire *island* burst out of the British Channel. At the time a rather Poetic host of the One Show on the BBC referred to it as Lyonesse, the resting place of King Arthur. Wouldn't you know it, the name stuck.
Clusters of Leylines form too, it's as if the land is having it's own awakening. Celdyr, the Great Dragon, is spotted on Boxing Day. Thanks for letting us have Christmas off from this bollocks, I guess.
In 2014, following a spate of awakened terrorism, Ireland becomes the Free Republic of Ireland. It's history splits off here, probably to a Tir na Nog datafile.
In 2016, the Prime Minister Lena Rodale was assassinated, along side a few other world leaders. At the same time a troublingly large oil spill happens in the North Sea, giving Scotland a second Toxic Zone.
Finally for this section, in 2021 Goblinization Hits. In some communities 44% of people turn, twice the global average. Some put this down to the Leylines, others suggest the island is inherently magic. George the 7th is announced dead, leading a mad scramble for a new Monarch.
It's a stressful time, and when the new King is in place, the people rally around the monarchy in a wave of nationalism and instate the Office of the Lord Protector.
There's been many more key and interesting points of history that we'll not cover here. But that paints enough a picture of the troubled history of the island over the last while.
## Geography
Oh frag we're only just done. Quick breakdown of the geography:
* London - Capital - This city is grimy as anything, Acid Rain completely futzes with attempts to maintain things. The most notable effort is the bones of the Dome Project of Inner London. They tried to make a biofabric dome around the Inner City to protect it from pollution, but in the 30s terrorists pushed Toxins past the filters and killed thousands. The dome itself was taken down, but the scar on the city remains.
The Sprawl of London is composed of the Inner City and then a surrounding belt of "Orbitals" as the planning commission calls them. Most people live outside of the Inner City and then commute in.
The most infamous area of the inner city is the Lambeth Containment Zone. It was discovered in 2038 that Adams-Hoffman corporation was running government sanctioned and widespread gene modification experiments on the locals. This lead to weeks of widespread riots as the residents raged at the callous abuse that the government enabled. Rather than *solve* the problem in any way, the government managed to contain the riots and then walled the poor bastards in.
In recent years the Lord Protector's office has attempted outreach. This has gone poorly, as there is little to no reason for anyone to trust the government in that LCZ.
* Cambridge is the core of any R&D a corp carries out, with the University of Cambridge at it's center. Most professors there are also Consultants on one Project or Another. Towering over the sixteen story office blocks is the forty of the neoNET (née Fuchi) arcology habitat.
* Birmingham is a factory town. A proper fragged one too. It's mostly factories and Humanis tensions in this town, but the symbol of Birmingham is the Bull Ring. 186 stories, half vacant and a failed arcology - so just like most things people try in the UK it was meant to be something Grand, didn't happen and now exist as a scar that pisses of anyone who looks at it.
* Newcastle-Tynesprawl - Eesh. You think everywhere else is bad? NT-Sprawl is on the edge of the northern toxic zone which regularly leaks into the air, water and food of the the people who live there. In the worst case, it could end up like the 120,000 dead of the VITAS outbreak of 2047 - which recent evidence suggest was actually an abandoned chem plant that caught fire. It's so bad that Parliament is considering calling it uninhabitable.
## Other Things to Know
Almost Done, rapid fire round now.
### Crime
* There are plenty of local gangs for you to worry about, but there are also the usual range of international syndicate. The most prominent is the Tongs, but we also have the usual arrangement of the Vory and Mafia as well.
### The Lord Protector and the Pendragon
* The Lord Protector likes his surveillance state, since the office's inception, it has pushed for public monitoring and surveillance. Most notably any mage in the country (tourist or not!) needs to have their DNA registered with the office before they can go about their day to day.
* In 2062, there was an anti-government rally in hyde park. This in itself would be a massively charged event until a man in plainclothes ascended the stage and without a word lifted a very ornate sword to the sky. They called him the Pendragon.
* Who the hell this guy is, that's a mystery. For whatever reason, the Lord Protector hasn't caught him, and boy did he try.
* The next year the Pendragon (or his people) broke into a government office and stole papers showing large amounts of government funds being invested illegally into corporate interests to inflate earning reports.
### Things that are different?
* Unlike some places in america, the police is still a national institution in the UK.
* Firearms are still banned in the UK save for hunting rifles and shotguns, and even then they are strictly registered and controlled. This doesn't mean you can't *get* a gun, just that it's not as readily available as the UCAS, and at a high markup.
### The Corporate Powers
* NeoNET - Transys Neuronet, once an independant corp, is one of the three companies that make up the gestalt of NeoNET in 2064. You'll sometimes still see the branding around on some of the local telecomm equipment or as shopping center outlet.
* Neo NET specialises in the wireless infrastracture that powers your commlink, commlinks themselves and Augmented Reality.
* They *are* communication in many places.
* British Industrial PLC - The Angel Towers arcology in London houses the offices and workers for British Industrial. In addition to being a train station, a two floor shopping center and a wholesale market, the upper floors are where most workers live and grind.
* Consumer Electronic manufacturers and Food. That Processing unit in your flat? Probably BI - somewhere along the line. Same with the nutrient paste you put in it, or the Regal Burger you decide to grab when you're sick of the same flavors.
* Renraku, Aztech and Shiawase have a large presence otherwise - but in different ways. Renraku tends to lie low as a chip supplier for other corps, Aztechnology's UK tend to be investment based, with their fingers to be rumored to be in many pies, and Shiawase inheriting the recruitment and research centers afforded to them by their buyout of Fuchi in 2060.
TLDR:
* The UK is intensely magical and intensely polluted, an exercise in contrasts. We have lots of Metahumans.
* We have a monarchy and the regular house of Parliment, as well as the Office of the Lord Protector and his Lords.
* There's a bunch of pockets of Toxic Zones as well as Wild Zones. Be careful when going there.
* Major Powers include Neo-NET and British Industrial, but aren't the only game in town.
* Aztech, Renraku and Shiawase have strong corporate interests in the UK.
Phew, what a infodump! That's all for now chummers. If you've got questions - feel free to ask.
