In case I was not clear, the latest chapter is now complete. I updated the post to add the ending, and threadmarked it.
But Mato's battle with the SDC is just beginning. I am not going to write as much of it as the story deserves, because I don't want to write a courtroom drama story. I'm not an engineer or a patenting lawyer, and I don't watch enough of either on TV.
But there is more of the human and political element to explore.
For example, Jacques Schnee taking Weiss with him to personally fly out to Vacuo and meet Mato face-to-face to discuss hiring her as an employee of the Schnee Dust Company, or simply selling him her patent-pending idea. Neither of which are illegal or even necessarily evil, but which he and other major companies have done against the spirit of the law. Even so, either action would reflect much better on his company than opposing Mato in court; between the legal fees and the reputation control, it would be cheaper and more rewarding to buy Mato or her idea.
Does everyone agree with that so far? Do you disagree with the rough math, or that Jacques would fly out there personally?
Weiss is 16 years old at this point, just like Mato. She has just recently been heiress of the company after Winter joined the military in defiance of her father's wishes and was stripped of her title. The White Fang turned violent three years ago, and Weiss has already lost at least one family member or friend of the family to terrorist murder.
Jacques isn't just showing off his latest heiress; he may just aware enough of Weiss' loneliness to think he might be able to use her to convince Mato to leave her barbarous nation and come home with them both to civilized Atlas. Trapped within her father's view of the world, this is exactly how Weiss views the situation and what she hopes for. She thinks Mato might become a friend in a time where she really doesn't have any.
A following installment also lets me include Mato's family addressing the finer points of "what money can you make from this". I left that out of this part because it was Mato's least concern.
