@Catpetter1981 Is it possible to rediscover or reinvent sect knowledge like how making reaching such or such cultivation stage safe?

Yes, it is possible to do so. Part of this quest will be about filling in the gaps in your library of arts knowledge arising from your hasty escape and the loss of the former Sect Head and Elders before they had a chance to fully pass down their knowledge.

The vote over the Crimson Essence Arts scroll played into that: Do you want to go for faster progression for Peishan and Meimei as well as new recruits you may bring in, so that you have a wider base of decent fighters? Or trade-off early progression (first tier all the way to the fifth tier) for a more elite-focused build (one extra tier six, at the cost of the first three tiers)? Or shoot for the moon and trade everything for a scrap of knowledge on tier seven?


Beyond that, do you want to improve your power by going all in on your Crimson Essence Sect's blood-based arts? And related to that, why was Lady Xue bottle-necked at the sixth tier and unable to progress to seventh tier for so long, and what lies beyond at the eighth and ninth tiers that are documented in the oral history of your Sect?

Do you want to make your arts "safer" / less prone to bottle-necking and 走火入魔 at the cost of power or progression speed, or the other way around? Or not bother with re-inventing the wheel one way or the other, and focus on quantity of recruits and bringing as many of them as high as they can go within the parameters of your existing knowledge?


Or do you want to widen your knowledge base by acquiring (through force, subterfuge or diplomacy) the arts of other Sects? And perhaps in the process develop a way to remove the Crimson Essence Arts' reliance on blood consumption, and form a "reformed" Crimson Essence Sect? But how much of the Crimson Essence Sect remains if you do that? Would this in itself be a form of submission and surrender to the people who sought the destruction of the Sect?

Stress Mechanics

Xue Hu becomes more stressed if she:
  • Turns down opportunities to learn new martial arts and techniques.

CRIMSON ESSENCE ARTS

Summary
The foundational internal cultivation arts of the Crimson Essence Sect, which enables the practitioner to cycle the essence of animal blood into their dantian for both long-term growth as well as short-term combat boosts.

First Tier (Practical knowledge)
  • Breakthrough
    • Drink as much animal blood as you can hold in your stomach, then visualize the blood swirling within the middle of your body.
    • If the initiate feels a persistent warmth in their abdominal area, they have succeeded in igniting their Dantian and reached the first tier of the Crimson Essence Arts.
    • If not, the initiate can try again in another week's time. If the initiate fails to ignite their dantian with this method after 11 attempts, this means they do not have any affinity for the Crimson Essence Arts and should not bother trying again, although further attempts do not inflict any penalty other than the physical discomfort of drinking so much blood at once.
  • Benefits
    • Ignites the Dantian and allows for further internal cultivation.
    • Gain a permanent minor boost to Strength, Agility, Toughness and Speed.
  • Side-Effects
    • Requires the regular consumption of animal blood to further progress in the Crimson Essence Arts.
    • Experiences mild discomfort and cravings if animal blood is not consumed regularly.

For some quick and easy privacy from potential probing eyes and roaming tongues, you set up a make-shift field tent while on the outskirts of the massive tent city surrounding Ulaankorum and hold a meeting with your band. Tingting has managed to brew up a pot of tea with grasses and wildflowers from the Steppes, and the fragrance of the tea imbues the tent with an ambience of normality. You know that this air of tranquility will be short-lived given the looming shadow of the unknown enemies who destroyed the Sect, but you are willing to enjoy it while it lasts.

Meimei's nameless rabbit and too Tian Jing's Dragon-Slaying Thundering Roar of the Heavens too are ensconced in Peishan's lap, while Young Master Fluffy is curled around Peishan's shoulders. Peishan has had a herbal mixture applied to her face to darken her complexion, and her bangs are brushed low to conceal her eyes.

"Yes Younger / Older Sect-Sister," Tian Jing and Meimei reply in unison, looking suitably chastised.

I'm guessing letting our partners drink our blood for some boost is not enough of a basis to be removed from the Crimson Sect?
 
I am very much in favor of establishing a new oversect, our cultivation method strikes me as more useful when used in parallel with a more traditional method.

Sure it has the disadvantage of the heat generation, meaning we have to probably stay secret longer until we can reveal ourselves. But it also feels like a bigger victory to keep the Crimson Essence Sect alive without having to resort to make it a part of some new sect.

Fair enough! It just seems like all the big powerful sects find a way to integrate a wide range of Arts and center around a widely usable cultivate art for the initial members. It seems like Crimson Essence is niche from the start and will inherently limit our recruitment.

With an oversect we can steer compatible disciples towards Crimson Essence without losing the others.

  • Your band will remain in your current tent at the outer edges of the tent city.
  • Does not take any actions.
  • Does not cost any money.
  • Vulnerable to random event rolls turning this into an undesirable location (e.g. unsavoury types setting up their tents next to yours, or a latrine being dug near your tent).
  • Mutually exclusive with "Find a new place to pitch your tent" and "Find a new place to pitch your tent, forcefully".
  • Tents provide low security and low privacy.
  • If you do not include any "Housing" option in your plan, you will automatically default to this "Stay where you are".
[ ] Home - Find a new place to pitch your tent.
  • Your band will explore the tent city for vacant spots with nicer occupants of neighbouring tents.
  • Generates three choices of vacant spots within the tent city (quality subject to rolls).
  • Does not cost any money.
  • Less vulnerable to random event rolls turning your selected spot into a less desirable location.
  • Mutually exclusive with "Stay where you are".
  • Tents provide low security and low privacy.
[ ] Home - Find a new place to pitch your tent, forcefully.
  • Your band will explore the tent city for occupied tents in good locations, and "persuade" the occupants to offer their spot to your band.
  • Generates four choices of vacant spots within the tent city (quality subject to rolls, with a +25 bonus to each roll).
  • Does not cost any money.
  • Less vulnerable to random event rolls turning your selected spot into a less desirable location.
  • Generates a small amount of Heat.

Work (+5 to rolls from "Superb Home Manager")

[ ] Look for work in the city, prioritizing jobs that are martially-oriented (e.g. guarding warehouses and merchants' stalls).

  • 95% chance of success (not including Superb Home Manager).
  • Earns 20 to 25 sestertii per member of your band excluding Tingting, or a total of 100 to 125 sestertii (subject to rolls i.e. a higher roll will provide earnings on the higher end of this range).
  • Low chance of a random event roll generating Heat (e.g. the warehouse is attacked and you are required to engage in combat).
